We study the hermitian one matrix model with semi-classical potential. This is a general unitary invariant random matrix ensemble in which the potential has a derivative that is a rational function and the measure is supported on some collection of disjoint closed intervals. Such models have attracted much interest both due to their physical applications and relations to integrable systems. An object of central interest in random matrix theory is the correlation kernel, as this encodes the eigenvalue correlation functions. In recent years many results have been obtained proving that the correlation kernel near special points in the spectrum can be expressed in terms of Painlevé transcendents and their associated Riemann-Hilbert problems. In the present work we build on this success by proposing a model problem that is general enough to describe the limiting kernel at any point in the spectrum. In the most general situation this would include cases of logarithmic singularities and essential singularities in the weight colliding with soft or hard edges, the bulk of the spectrum or even births of a cut.
In this paper the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with jump supported on a appropriate curve on the complex plane with a finite endpoint at the origin, is used for the study of corresponding matrix biorthogonal polynomials associated with Laguerre type matrices of weights ---which are constructed in terms of a given matrix Pearson equation. First and second order differential systems for the fundamental matrix, solution of the mentioned Riemann-Hilbert problem are derived. An explicit and general example is presented to illustrate the theoretical results of the work. Related matrix eigenvalue problem…
A Riemann-Hilbert problem for a $q$-difference Painlevé equation, known as $q\textrm{P}_{\textrm{IV}}$, is shown to be solvable. This yields a bijective correspondence between the transcendental solutions of $q\textrm{P}_{\textrm{IV}}$ and corresponding data on an associated $q$-monodromy surface. We also construct the moduli space of $q\textrm{P}_{\textrm{IV}}$ explicitly.
We evaluate explicitly, in terms of the Cauchy data, the constant pre-factor in the large $x$ asymptotics of the Painlevé III tau-function. Our result proves the conjectural formula for this pre-factor obtained recently by O. Lisovyy, Y. Tykhyy, and the first co-author with the help of the recently discovered connection of the Painlevé tau-functions with the Virasoro conformal blocks. Our approach does not use this connection, and it is based on the Riemann-Hilbert method.
Matrix Szego biorthogonal polynomials for quasi-definite matrices of measures are studied. For matrices of Holder weights a Riemann-Hilbert problem is uniquely solved in terms of the matrix Szego polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is given as an appropriate framework for the discussion of the Szego matrix and the associated Szego recursion relations for the matrix orthogonal polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. Pearson type differential systems characterizing the matrix of weights are studied. These are linear systems of ordinary differential equations which a…
The rational solutions of the Painlevé-II equation appear in several applications and are known to have many remarkable algebraic and analytic properties. They also have several different representations, useful in different ways for establishing these properties. In particular, Riemann-Hilbert representations have proven to be useful for extracting the asymptotic behavior of the rational solutions in the limit of large degree (equivalently the large-parameter limit). We review the elementary properties of the rational Painlevé-II functions, and then we describe three different Riemann-Hilbert…
We study double integral representations of Christoffel-Darboux kernels associated with two examples of Hermite-type matrix orthogonal polynomials. We show that the Fredholm determinants connected with these kernels are related through the Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov (IIKS) theory with a certain Riemann-Hilbert problem. Using this Riemann-Hilbert problem we obtain a Lax pair whose compatibility conditions lead to a non-commutative version of the Painleve' IV differential equation for each family.
We exhibit a remarkable connection between sixth equation of Painleve list and infinite families of explicitly uniformizable algebraic curves. Fuchsian equations, congruences for group transformations, differential calculus of functions and differentials on corresponding Riemann surfaces, Abelian integrals, analytic connections (generalizations of Chazy's equations), and other attributes of uniformization can be obtained for these curves. As byproducts of the theory, we establish relations between Picard-Hitchin's curves, hyperelliptic curves, punctured tori, Heun's equations, and the famous d…
We present a novel approach for computing the Hilbert series of 4d N=1 supersymmetric QCD with SO(N_c) and Sp(N_c) gauge groups. It is shown that such Hilbert series can be recast in terms of determinants of Hankel matrices. With the aid of results from random matrix theory, such Hankel determinants can be evaluated both exactly and asymptotically. Several new results on Hilbert series for general numbers of colours and flavours are thus obtained in this paper. We show that the Hilbert series give rise to families of rational solutions, with palindromic numerators, to the Painlevé VI equations…
We study the sixth $q$-difference Painlevé equation ($q{\textrm{P}_{\textrm{VI}}}$) through its associated Riemann-Hilbert problem (RHP) and show that the RHP is always solvable for irreducible monodromy data. This enables us to identify the solution space of $q{\textrm{P}_{\textrm{VI}}}$ with a monodromy manifold for generic parameter values. We deduce this manifold explicitly and show it is a smooth and affine algebraic surface when it does not contain reducible monodromy. Furthermore, we describe the RHP for reducible monodromy data and show that, when solvable, its solution is given explic…
We show that the fourth order nonlinear ODE which controls the pole dynamics in the general solution of equation $P_I^2$ compatible with the KdV equation exhibits two remarkable properties: 1) it governs the isomonodromy deformations of a $2\times2$ matrix linear ODE with polynomial coefficients, and 2) it does not possesses the Painlevé property. We also study the properties of the Riemann--Hilbert problem associated to this ODE and find its large $t$ asymptotic solution for the physically interesting initial data.
In this paper we introduce the concept of decorated character variety for the Riemann surfaces arising in the theory of the Painlevé differential equations. Since all Painlevé differential equations (apart from the sixth one) exhibit Stokes phenomenon, it is natural to consider Riemann spheres with holes and bordered cusps on such holes. The decorated character is defined as complexification of the bordered cusped Teichmüller space introduced in arXiv:1509.07044. We show that the decorated character variety of a Riemann sphere with s holes and n>1 bordered cusps is a Poisson manifold of dimens…
After reviewing the Hermitian one matrix model, we will give a brief introduction to the Hermitian two matrix model and present a summary of some recent results on the asymptotic behavior of the two matrix model with a quartic potential. In particular, we will discuss a limiting kernel in the quartic/quadratic case that is constructed out of a $4\times 4$ Riemann-Hilbert problem related to Painlevé II equation. Also an open problem will be presented.

Riemann-Hilbert problems, Fredholm determinants, explicit combinatorial expansions, and connection formulas for the general $q$-Painlevé III$_3$ tau functions
All of the six Painlevé equations except the first have families of rational solutions, which are frequently important in applications. The third Painlevé equation in generic form depends on two parameters $m$ and $n$, and it has rational solutions if and only if at least one of the parameters is an integer. We use known algebraic representations of the solutions to study numerically how the distributions of poles and zeros behave as $n\in\mathbb{Z}$ increases and how the patterns vary with $m\in\mathbb{C}$. This study suggests that it is reasonable to consider the rational solutions in the li…
Rational solutions of the inhomogeneous Painleve-II equation and of a related coupled Painleve-II system have recently arisen in studies of fluid vortices and of the sine-Gordon equation. For the sine-Gordon application in particular it is of interest to understand the large-degree asymptotic behavior of the rational Painleve-II functions. We explicitly compute the leading-order large-degree asymptotics of these two families of rational functions valid in the whole complex plane with the exception of a neighborhood of a certain piecewise-smooth closed curve. We obtain rigorous error bounds by …
This paper is a continuation of our analysis, begun in arXiv:1310.2276, of the rational solutions of the inhomogeneous Painleve-II equation and associated rational solutions of the homogeneous coupled Painleve-II system in the limit of large degree. In this paper we establish asymptotic formulae valid near a certain curvilinear triangle in the complex plane that was previously shown to separate two distinct types of asymptotic behavior. Our results display both a trigonometric degeneration of the rational Painleve-II functions and also a degeneration to the tritronquee solution of the Painleve…
Under the Flaschka-Newell Lax pair, the Darboux transformation for the Painlevé-II equation is constructed by the limiting technique. With the aid of the Darboux transformation, the rational solutions are represented by the Gram determinant, and then we give the large $y$ asymptotics of the determinant and the rational solutions. Finally, the solution of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem is obtained from the Darboux matrices.
We study Fredholm determinants of the Painlevé II and Painlevé XXXIV kernels. In certain critical unitary random matrix ensembles, these determinants describe special gap probabilities of eigenvalues. We obtain Tracy-Widom formulas for the Fredholm determinants, which are explicitly given in terms of integrals involving a family of distinguished solutions to the coupled Painlevé II system in dimension four. Moreover, the large gap asymptotics for these Fredholm determinants are derived, where the constant terms are given explicitly in terms of the Riemann zeta-function.

We describe the close connection between the linear system for the sixth Painlevé equation and the general Heun equation, formulate the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the Heun functions and show how, in the case of reducible monodromy, the Riemann-Hilbert formalism can be used to construct explicit polynomial solutions of the Heun equation.
The present paper gives an overview of the recent developments in the description of critical behavior for Hamiltonian perturbations of hyperbolic and elliptic systems of partial differential equations. It was conjectured that this behavior can be described in terms of distinguished Painlevé transcendents, which are universal in the sense that they are, to some extent, independent of the equation and the initial data. We will consider several examples of well-known integrable equations that are expected to show this type of Painlevé behavior near critical points. The Riemann-Hilbert method is …
Painlevé \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral34\relax} and collisionless shock in the defocusing NLS equation with step-like initial data in the transition regions
We study factorizations of rational matrix functions with simple poles on the Riemann sphere. For the quadratic case (two poles) we show, using multiplicative representations of such matrix functions, that a good coordinate system on this space is given by a mix of residue eigenvectors of the matrix and its inverse. Our approach is motivated by the theory of discrete isomonodromic transformations and their relationship with difference Painlevé equations. In particular, in these coordinates, basic isomonodromic transformations take the form of the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations. Secondly we …
We obtain the double scaling asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients and the partition function at the critical point of the $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrix model with cubic potential. We prove that the recurrence coefficients admit an asymptotic expansion in powers of $N^{-2/5}$, and in the leading order the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients is given by a Boutroux tronquée solution to the Painlevé I equation. We also obtain the double scaling limit of the partition function, and we prove that the poles of the tronquée solution are limits of zeros of the partiti…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the classical Hirota equation on the line with decaying initial data. Based on the spectral analysis of the Lax pair of the Hirota equation, we first expressed the solution of the Cauchy problem in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. Further we apply nonlinear steepest descent analysis to obtain the long-time asymptotics of the solution in the critical transition region $|\frac{x}{t} - \frac{α^2}{3β}|t^{2/3} \leq M$, $M$ is a positive constant. Our result shows that the long time asymptotics of the Hirota equation can be expressed in terms of …
In the application of the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials, a model Riemann-Hilbert problem that appears in the multi-cut case is solved with the use of hyperelliptic theta functions. We present here an alternative approach which uses meromorphic differentials instead of theta functions to construct the solution of the model Riemann-Hilbert problem.
We establish a representation of the joint moments of the characteristic polynomial of a CUE random matrix and its derivative in terms of a solution of the sigma-Painleve V equation. The derivation involves the analysis of a formula for the joint moments in terms of a determinant of generalised Laguerre polynomials using the Riemann-Hilbert method. We use this connection with the sigma-Painleve V equation to derive explicit formulae for the joint moments and to show that in the large-matrix limit the joint moments are related to a solution of the sigma-Painleve III equation. Using the conforma…
The Painleve-IV equation has three families of rational solutions generated by the generalized Hermite polynomials. Each family is indexed by two positive integers m and n. These functions have applications to nonlinear wave equations, random matrices, fluid dynamics, and quantum mechanics. Numerical studies suggest the zeros and poles form a deformed n by m rectangular grid. Properly scaled, the zeros and poles appear to densely fill certain curvilinear rectangles as m and n tend to infinity with r=m/n fixed. Generalizing a method of Bertola and Bothner used to study rational Painleve-II func…
We consider Fredholm determinants of matrix convolution operators associated to matrix versions of the $n - $th Airy functions. Using the theory of integrable operators, we relate them to a fully noncommutative Painlevé II hierarchy, defined through a matrix valued version of the Lenard operators. In particular, the Riemann-Hilbert technique used to study these integrable operators allows to find a Lax pair for each member of the hierarchy. Finally, the coefficients of the Lax matrices are explicitely written in terms of these matrix valued Lenard operators and some solution of the hierarchy a…
These lectures introduce the method of nonlinear steepest descent for Riemann-Hilbert problems. This method finds use in studying asymptotics associated to a variety of special functions such as the Painlevé equations and orthogonal polynomials, in solving the inverse scattering problem for certain integrable systems, and in proving universality for certain classes of random matrix ensembles. These lectures highlight a few such applications.
Differential Equations for Approximate Solutions of Painlevé Equations: Application to the Algebraic Solutions of the Painlevé-III $({\rm D}_7)$ Equation
We prove a Tracy-Widom type formula for the generating function of occupancy numbers on several disjoint intervals of the higher order Airy point processes. The formula is related to a new vector-valued Painlevé II hierarchy we define, together with its Lax pair.
We extend the formalism of integrable operators a' la Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov to matrix-valued convolution operators on a semi-infinite interval and to matrix integral operators with a kernel of the form E_1^T(x) E_2(y)/(x+y) thus proving that their resolvent operators can be expressed in terms of solutions of some specific Riemann-Hilbert problems. We also describe some applications, mainly to a noncommutative version of Painleve' II (recently introduced by Retakh and Rubtsov), a related noncommutative equation of Painleve' type. We construct a particular family of solutions of the noncom…
We study the joint probability generating function for $k$ occupancy numbers on disjoint intervals in the Bessel point process. This generating function can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant. We obtain an expression for it in terms of a system of coupled Painlevé V equations, which are derived from a Lax pair of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. This generalizes a result of Tracy and Widom [24], which corresponds to the case $k = 1$. We also provide some examples and applications. In particular, several relevant quantities can be expressed in terms of the generating function, like the gap probab…
The Cauchy problem for the Camassa -- Holm equation with step-like initial conditions is reformulated as a Riemann -- Hilbert problem. The the initial value problem solution is obtained then in a parametric form from the Riemann -- Hilbert problem solution.
We consider matrix functions with certain invariance under inversion in the unit circle. If such a function satisfies a positivity assumption on the unit circle, then only zero partial indices appear in its Riemann-Hilbert (Wiener-Hopf) factorization. It implies the unique solvability of a certain class of Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems. It includes the ones associated with the inverse scattering transform of the focusing/defocusing integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
Generic c=1 four-point conformal blocks on the Riemann sphere can be seen as the coefficients of Fourier expansion of the tau function of Painlevé VI equation with respect to one of its integration constants. Based on this relation, we show that c=1 fusion matrix essentially coincides with the connection coefficient relating tau function asymptotics at different critical points. Explicit formulas for both quantities are obtained by solving certain functional relations which follow from the tau function expansions. The final result does not involve integration and is given by a ratio of two pro…
We show, how the Riemann-Hilbert approach to the elastodynamic equations, which have been suggested in our preceding papers, works in the half-plane case. We pay a special attention to the appearance of the Rayleigh waves within the scheme.
A new concept of meromorphic $Σ$-factorization, for Hölder continuous functions defined on a contour $Γ$ that is the pullback of $\dot{\mathbb{R}}$ (or the unit circle) in a Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus 1, is introduced and studied, and its relations with holomorphic $Σ$-factorization are discussed. It is applied to study and solve some scalar Riemann-Hilbert problems in $Σ$ and vectorial Riemann-Hilbert problems in $\mathbb{C}$, including Wiener-Hopf matrix factorization, as well as to study some properties of a class of Toeplitz operators with $2 \times 2$ matrix symbols.
