It is well known that in de Sitter space the (free) minimally coupled massless scalar field theory does not admit any de Sitter-invariant Hadamard state. Related to this is the fact that the propagator for the massive scalar field corresponding to the de Sitter-invariant vacuum state diverges in the massless limit, with the infrared-divergent term being a constant. Since the Faddeev-Popov ghosts for the covariantly quantized Yang-Mills theory are minimally coupled massless scalar fields, it might appear that de Sitter symmetry would be broken in the ghost sector of Yang-Mills theory in de Sitter space. It is shown in this paper that the modes responsible for de Sitter symmetry breaking can be removed in a way consistent with BRST invariance and that a de Sitter-invariant theory can be constructed. More generally, it is shown that the spatially constant modes (the zero modes) of the Faddeev-Popov ghosts can be disposed of in a wide class of spacetimes with compact spatial sections. Then, the effective theory obtained by removing the zero modes, which contains a non-local interaction term, is shown to be equivalent to the theory corresponding to using a Faddeev-Popov-ghost propagator with the constant infrared-divergent term removed, provided that one can freely integrate by parts in the spacetime integral at the vertex for the ghost interaction term.
We study the Faddeev-Popov ghost sector of asymptotically safe quantum gravity, which becomes non-perturbative in the ultraviolet. We point out that nonzero matter-ghost couplings and higher-order ghost self-interactions exist at a non-Gaussian fixed point for the gravitational couplings, i.e., in the ultraviolet. Thus the ghost sector in this non-perturbative ultraviolet completion does not keep the structure of a simple Faddeev-Popov determinant. We discuss implications of the new ghost couplings for the Renormalization Group flow in gravity, the form of the ultraviolet completion, and the r…
A modifed Faddeev-Popov path integral density for the quantization of Yang-Mills theory in the Feynman gauge is discussed, where contributions of the Faddeev-Popov ghost fields are replaced by multi-point gauge field interactions. An explicit calculation to $O(g^2)$ shows the equivalence of the usual Faddeev-Popov scheme and its modified version.
We discuss how to implement the Legendre transform using the Faddeev-Popov method of Quantum Field Theory. By doing this, we provide an alternate way to understand the essence of the Faddeev-Popov method, using only concepts that are very familiar to the students (such as the Legendre transform), and without needing any reference to Quantum Field Theory. Two examples of Legendre transform calculated with the Faddeev-Popov method are given to better clarify the point.
A generalization of the Faddeev-Popov procedure to deal with either anomalous and non-anomalous gauge theories with closed, irreducible gauge algebra is presented. An expression for the Wess-Zumino action is obtained.
The Faddeev-Popov determinant of Landau gauge in d dimensions and Coulomb gauge in d+1 dimensions is calculated in the heat-kernel expansion up to next-to-leading order. The UV-divergent parts in d=3,4 are isolated and the counterterms required for a non-perturbative treatment of the Faddeev-Popov determinant are determined.
We consider how Lorentz-violating interactions in the Faddeev-Popov ghost sector will affect scalar QED. The behavior depends sensitively on whether the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. If the symmetry is not broken, Lorentz violations in the ghost sector are unphysical, but if there is spontaneous breaking, radiative corrections will induce Lorentz-violating and gauge-dependent terms in other sectors of the theory.
Some textbooks and reports claim that the Jacobian which arises in the discussion of the Faddeev-Popov method to quantize non-Abelian gauge theories and which is given by the derivative of the gauge fixing conditions over the gauge group parameters, is gauge invariant. Other references however prove the opposite. In this brief report we present a discussion about this matter.
We formulate criteria of applicability of the Faddeev-Popov trick to gauge theories on manifolds with boundaries. With the example of Euclidean Maxwell theory we demonstrate that the path integral is indeed gauge independent when these criteria are satisfied, and depends on a gauge choice whenever these criteria are violated. In the latter case gauge dependent boundary conditions are required for a self-consistent formulation of the path intgral.
It is shown that on curved backgrounds, the Coulomb gauge Faddeev-Popov operator can have zero modes even in the abelian case. These zero modes cannot be eliminated by restricting the path integral over a certain region in the space of gauge potentials. The conditions for the existence of these zero modes are studied for static spherically symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions. For this class of metrics, the general analytic expression of the metric components in terms of the zero modes is constructed. Such expression allows to find the asymptotic behavior of background metrics, which i…
I present a perturbative calculation of the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in Coulomb gauge in three dimensions, and Landau gauge in two and three dimensions, with an ansatz for the gluon propagator as the non-perturbative input. The results show how the low-lying Faddeev-Popov eigenvalue spectrum is modified as the first Gribov horizon is approached, and how the spectra can differ in Coulomb and Landau gauges.
By regularizing the conical singularities by means of a segment of a sphere or pseudosphere and then taking the regulator to zero, we compute exactly the Faddeev--Popov determinant related to the conformal gauge fixing for a piece-wise flat surface with the topology of the sphere. The result is analytic in the opening angles of the conical singularities in the interval ($π$, $4π$) and in the smooth limit goes over to the continuum expression. The Riemann-Roch relation on the dimensions of ker$(L^†L)$ and ker$(LL^†)$ is satisfied.
A study of the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the maximal Abelian gauge is presented in the case of the gauge group SU(2) and for different Euclidean space-time dimensions. Explicit examples of classes of normalizable zero modes and corresponding gauge field configurations are constructed by taking into account two boundary conditions, namely: i) the finite Euclidean Yang-Mills action, ii) the finite Hilbert norm.
For the general renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory we investigate renormalization of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts using the higher covariant derivative regularization. First, we find the two-loop anomalous dimension defined in terms of the bare coupling constant in the general $ξ$-gauge. It is demonstrated that for doing this calculation one should take into account that the quantum gauge superfield is renormalized in a nonlinear way. Next, we obtain the two-loop anomalous dimension of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant and examin…
The quantum action (dynamical) principle is exploited to investigate the nature and origin of the Faddeev-Popov (FP) factor in gauge theories without recourse to path integrals. Gauge invariant as well as gauge non-invariant interactions are considered to show that the FP factor needs to be modified in more general cases and expressions for these modifications are derived. In particular we show that a gauge invariant theory does not necessarily imply the familiar FP factor for proper quantization.
By regularizing the singularities appearing in the two dimensional Regge calculus by means of a segment of a sphere or pseudo-sphere and then taking the regulator to zero, we obtain a simple formula for the gauge volume which appears in the functional integral. Such a formula is an analytic function of the opening of the conic singularity in the interval from $π$ to $4π$ and in the continuum limit it goes over to the correct result.
We discuss a possible definition of the Faddeev-Popov matrix for the minimal linear covariant gauge on the lattice and present first results for the ghost propagator. We consider Yang-Mills theory in four space-time dimensions, for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups.
The propagators for the Faddeev-Popov (FP) ghosts in Yang-Mills theory and perturbative gravity in the covariant gauge are infrared (IR) divergent in de Sitter spacetime. An IR cutoff in the momentum space to regularize these divergences breaks the de Sitter invariance. These IR divergences are due to the spatially constant modes in the Yang-Mills case and the modes proportional to the Killing vectors in the case of perturbative gravity. It has been proposed that these IR divergences can be removed, with the de Sitter invariance preserved, by first regularizing them with an additional mass ter…
Examples of normalizable zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge are constructed in d=2,3,4 dimensions.
In this paper, we will study the deformation of a three dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry gauge theory. We will deform this theory by imposing non-anticommutativity. This will break the supersymmetry of the theory from $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry to $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetry. We will address the problem that occurs in the Landau gauge due to the existence of multiple solutions to the gauge fixing condition. This will be done by generalizing the Faddeev-Popov method. This formalism is motivated from the Nicolai map in topological field theories. Finally, we will study the ex…
A refined expression for the Faddeev-Popov determinant is derived for gauge theories quantised around a reducible classical solution. We apply this result to Chern-Simons perturbation theory on compact spacetime 3-manifolds with quantisation around an arbitrary flat gauge field isolated up to gauge transformations, pointing out that previous results on the finiteness and formal metric-independence of perturbative expansions of the partition function continue to hold.
We find the three-loop contribution to the $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories regularized by higher covariant derivatives produced by the supergraphs containing loops of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts. This is done using a recently proposed algorithm, which essentially simplifies such multiloop calculations. The result is presented in the form of an integral of double total derivatives in the momentum space. The considered contribution to the $β$-function is compared with the two-loop anomalous dimension of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts. This allows verifying the validity of the…
The relation of confinement scenarios based on topological configurations and the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario is examined. To this end the eigenspectrum of the central operator in the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario, the Faddeev-Popov operator, is studied in topological field configurations. It is found that instantons, monopoles, and vortices contribute to the spectrum in a qualitatively similar way. Especially, all give rise to additional zero-modes and thus can contribute to the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism. Hence a close relation between these confinement scenarios likely exists.
We propose a modified version of the Faddeev-Popov quantization approach for non-Abelian gauge field theory to avoid the Gribov ambiguity. We show that by means of introducing a new method to insert the correct identity into the Yang-Mills generating functional and considering the identity generated by an integral through a subgroup of the gauge group, the problem of the Gribov ambiguity can be removed naturally. Meanwhile by handling the absolute value of the Faddeev-Popov determinant with the method introduced by Williams and collaborators, we lift the Jacobian determinant together with the …
The construction outlined by Henyey is employed to provide examples of normalizable zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in d=3 dimensions. The corresponding gauge configurations have all finite norm ||A||^2 < \infty. In particular, in the case of the Landau gauge, the explicit construction of an infinite class of normalizable zero modes with finite norm ||A||^2 is provided.
During the last years significant progress has been made in the understanding of the confinement of quarks and gluons. However, this progress has been made in two directions, which are at first sight very different. On the one hand, topological configurations seem to play an important role in the formation of the static quark-anti-quark potential. On the other hand, when studying Green's functions, the Faddeev-Popov operator seems to be of importance, especially its spectrum near zero. To investigate whether a connection between both aspects exist, the eigenspectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operat…
The section condition of Double Field Theory has been argued to mean that doubled coordinates are gauged: a gauge orbit represents a single physical point. In this note, we consider a doubled and at the same time gauged particle action, and show that its BRST formulation including Faddeev--Popov ghosts matches with the graded Poisson geometry that has been recently used to describe the symmetries of Double Field Theory. Besides, by requiring target spacetime diffeomorphisms at the quantum level, we derive quantum corrections to the classical action involving dilaton, which might be comparable …
In light of the development of the Gribov issue for pure Euclidean gauge theories and of the recent lattice measurement of soft breaking of the BRST invariance in Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge, we consider non-perturbative features in the gauge-interacting matter sector and their relation with general properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator. A signature for BRST breaking in the matter sector is proposed and a local and renormalizable framework is constructed, accommodating this signature and predicting non-perturbative matter propagators that are consistent with available lattice da…
In the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario the confinement of gluons is attributed to an enhancement of the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator near eigenvalue zero. This has been observed in functional and also in lattice calculations. The linear rise of the quark-anti-quark potential and thus quark confinement on the other hand seems to be connected to topological excitations. To investigate whether a connection exists between both aspects of confinement, the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in two topological background fields is determined analytically in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. It is foun…
We show that an exact non-perturbative quantization of continuum gauge theory is provided by the Faddeev-Popov formula in Landau gauge, $\d(\p \cdot A) \det[-\p \cdot D(A)] \exp[-S_{\rm YM}(A)]$, restricted to the region where the Faddeev-Popov operator is positive $-\p \cdot D(A) > 0$ (Gribov region). Although there are Gribov copies inside this region, they have no influence on expectation-values. The starting point of the derivation is stochastic quantization which determines the Euclidean probability distribution $P(A)$ by a method that is free of the Gribov critique. In the Landau-gauge l…
We investigate the dependence of the Yang-Mills wave functional in Coulomb gauge on the Faddeev-Popov determinant. We use a Gaussian wave functional multiplied by an arbitrary power of the Faddeev-Popov determinant. We show, that within the resummation of one-loop diagrams the stationary vacuum energy is independent of the power of the Faddeev-Popov determinant and, furthermore, the wave functional becomes field-independent in the infrared, describing a stochastic vacuum. Our investigations show, that the infrared limit is rather robust against details of the variational ansätze for the Yang-M…
Totally symmetric arbitrary spin massless and massive fields in AdS space are studied. For such fields, we obtain Lagrangians which are invariant under global BRST transformations. The Lagrangians are used for computation of partition functions and effective actions. We demonstrate that BRST invariant bulk action for massless field evaluated on the solution of Dirichlet problem for gauge massless fields and Faddeev-Popov fields leads to BRST invariant effective action for canonical shadow gauge fields and shadow Faddeev-Popov fields, while the BRST invariant bulk action for massive field evalu…
The quantization of General Relativity invariant with respect to time-reparametrizations is considered. We construct the Faddeev-Popov generating functional for the unitary perturbation theory in terms of invariants of the kinemetric group of diffeomorphisms of a frame of reference as a set of Einstein's observers with the equivalent Hamiltonian description ($t'=t'(t)$, $x'^i=x'^i(t,x^1,x^2,x^3)$). The algebra of the kinemetric group has other dimensions than the constraint algebra in the conventional Dirac-Faddeev-Popov (DFP) approach to quantization. To restore the reparametrization invarian…
In this paper the zero modes of the de Donder gauge Faddeev-Popov operator for three dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant are analyzed. It is found that the three dimensional AdS vacuum produces (infinitely many) normalizable, smooth zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator. On the other hand, it is found that the BTZ black hole (including the zero mass black hole) does not generate zero modes. This differs from the usual Gribov problem in QCD where close to the maximally symmetric vacuum, the Faddeev-Popov determinant is positive definite while "far enough" from the vacuum …
In the case of non-abelian gauge theories, the standard Faddeev-Popov (FP) gauge-fixing procedure in the Landau gauge is known to be incomplete due to the presence of gauge-equivalent field configurations. A widespread belief is that the proper analysis of the low energy properties in this gauge requires the extension of the gauge-fixing procedure beyond the FP recipe. This manuscript reviews various applications of the Curci-Ferrari (CF) model, a phenomenological proposal for such an extension, based on the decoupling properties of Landau gauge correlators as computed on the lattice. We inves…
The conventional path integral expression for the Yang-Mills transition amplitude with flat measure and gauge-fixing built in via the Faddeev-Popov method has been claimed to fall short of guaranteeing gauge invariance in the non-perturbative regime. We show, however, that it yields the gauge invariant partition function where the projection onto gauge invariant wave functions is explicitly performed by integrating over the compact gauge group. In a variant of maximal Abelian gauge the Haar measure arises in the conventional Yang-Mills path integral from the Faddeev-Popov determinant.
The inverse of the Faddeev-Popov operator plays a pivotal role within the Gribov-Zwanziger approach to the quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in Landau gauge. Following a recent proposal [Phys. Rev. D90 (2014) 085010], we show that the inverse of the Faddeev-Popov operator can be consistently coupled to quark fields. Such a coupling gives rise to a local action while reproducing the behaviour of the quark propagator observed in lattice numerical simulations in the non-perturbative infrared region. By using the algebraic renormalization framework, we prove that the aforementioned loc…
We propose a generalisation of the Faddeev-Popov trick for Yang-Mills fields in the Landau gauge. The gauge-fixing is achieved as a genuine change of variables. In particular the Jacobian that appears is the modulus of the standard Faddeev-Popov determinant. We give a path integral representation of this in terms of auxiliary bosonic and Grassman fields extended beyond the usual set for standard Landau gauge BRST. The gauge-fixing Lagrangian density appearing in this context is local and enjoys a new extended BRST and anti-BRST symmetry though the gauge-fixing Lagrangian density in this case i…
The Faddeev-Popov rules for quantization of theory with gauge group are generalized for case of nvariance of quantum actions, $S_N$, on N-parametric Abelian SUSY transformations with odd parameters $λ_p$, p=1,..,N and anticommuting generators $s_p$, for N=3,4 implying substitution of ghost fields N-plet, $C^p$ multipled on $λ_p$, instead of the parameter, $ξ$, of gauge transformations. Total configuration spaces for quantum theory of the same classical model coincide for N=3 ,4 cases. For N=3 transformations the superspace of irrep includes in addition 3 ghost $C^p$, 3 even $B^{pq}$ and odd $\…
We derive the equations of time-independent stochastic quantization, without reference to an unphysical 5th time, from the principle of gauge equivalence. It asserts that probability distributions $P$ that give the same expectation values for gauge-invariant observables $<W > = \int dA W P$ are physically indistiguishable. This method escapes the Gribov critique. We derive an exact system of equations that closely resembles the Dyson-Schwinger equations of Faddeev-Popov theory, which we then solve non-perturbatively for the critical exponents that characterize the asymptotic form at $k \approx…
We consider the implications of the condensation of a general local BRST invariant dimension two operator built out of the localizing ghost fields of the Gribov-Zwanziger Lagrangian which is a localized Lagrangian incorporating the Gribov problem in the Landau gauge. For different colour tensor projections of the general operator, the properties of a frozen gluon propagator and unenhanced Faddeev-Popov ghost propagator, which are observed in lattice computations, can be reproduced. The alternative possibilities are distinguished by the infrared structure of the propagators of the spin-1 fields…
A new approach with BRST invariance is suggested to cure the degeneracy problem of ill defined path integrals in the path-integral calculationof quantum mechanical tunneling effects in which the problem arises due to the occurrence of zero modes. The Faddeev-Popov procedure is avoided and the integral over the zero mode is transformed in a systematic way into a well defined integral over instanton positions. No special procedure has to be adopted as in the Faddeev-Popov method in calculating the Jacobian of the transformation. The quantum mechanical tunneling for the Sine-Gordon potential is u…
We study numerically the eigenmode spectrum of the covariant lattice Laplacian, in the fundamental SU(2) color group representation. It is found that eigenmodes at the lower and upper ends of the spectrum are localized, and that the localization volume scales. In contrast, the eigenmodes of the lattice Faddeev-Popov operator are all extended rather than localized (as required for confinement) despite the similarity of the kinetic and Faddeev-Popov operators.
We review an alternative formulation of gauge field theories at finite temperature where unphysical degrees of freedom of gauge fields and the Faddeev-Popov ghosts are kept at zero temperature.
We address the issue of the all order multiplicative renormalizability of $SU(2)$ Gribov-Zwanziger theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge in presence of confined matter fields. The non-linear character of the maximal Abelian gauge requires the introduction of quartic interaction terms in the Faddeev-Popov ghosts as well as in the localizing Zwanziger fields, extended a well known feature of this gauge. We show that, when scalar matter fields are introduced, a second quartic interaction term between scalar fields, Faddeev-Popov ghosts and Zwanziger-like fields naturally arises. A BRST …
We address the issue of the all order multiplicative renormalizability of SU(2) Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge in presence of scalar matter fields. The non-linear character of the maximal Abelian gauge requires the introduction of quartic interaction terms in the Faddeev-Popov ghosts, a well known feature of this gauge. We show that, when scalar matter fields are introduced, a second quartic interaction term between scalar fields and Faddeev-Popov ghosts naturally arises. A BRST invariant action accounting for those quartic interaction terms is identified and proven…
Gribov ambiguity is a problem that arises when we try to single out the physical gauge degree of freedom in non-Abelian gauge theory by imposing the covariant gauge constraint. Unfortunately, the solution of the gauge constraint is not unique, thus the redundant gauge degree of freedom, called Gribov copies, remains unfixed. One of the traditional methods to partially resolve the Gribov problem is to restrict the space of gauge orbits inside the bounded region known as the Gribov region. The meaning of partially resolve is that this procedure can solve only the positivity's problem of the Fadd…
We reinterpret the Faddeev-Popov gauge-fixing procedure of Yang-Mills theories as the definition of a topological quantum field theory for gauge group elements depending on a background connection. This has the advantage of relating topological gauge-fixing ambiguities to the global breaking of a supersymmetry. The global zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov ghosts are handled in the context of an equivariant cohomology without breaking translational invariance. The gauge-fixing involves constant fields which play the role of moduli and modify the behavior of Green functions at subasymptotic scales…
This proceeding gives an overview of the renormalization of $F^2_{μν}$ using the Faddeev-Popov action and the more complicate Gribov-Zwanziger action, which deals with Gribov copies. We show that using the Faddeev-Popov action, $F^2_{μν}$ mixes with other $d=4$ operators. However, due to the BRST invariance of the action, this mixing is not relevant at the level of the correlator, $\Braket {F^2_{μν}(x) F^2_{αβ}(y)}$. In contrast, when turning to the Gribov-Zwanziger action, the mixing of $F^2_{μν}$ with other $d=4$ operator does have consequences at the level of the correlator. This is due to …
Four-dimensional Einstein gravity in the Palatini first order formalism is shown to possess a vector supersymmetry of the same type as found in the topological theories for Yang-Mills fields. A peculiar feature of the gravitational theory, characterized by diffeomorphism invariance, is a direct link of vector supersymmetry with the field equation of motion for the Faddeev-Popov ghost of diffeomorphisms.
In $d$ dimensions, the model for a massless $p$-form in curved space is known to be a reducible gauge theory for $p>1$, and therefore its covariant quantisation cannot be carried out using the standard Faddeev-Popov scheme. However, adding a mass term and also introducing a Stueckelberg reformulation of the resulting $p$-form model, one ends up with an irreducible gauge theory which can be quantised à la Faddeev and Popov. We derive a compact expression for the massive $p$-form effective action, $Γ^{(m)}_p$, in terms of the functional determinants of Hodge-de Rham operators. We then show that …
We propose a new one-parameter family of Landau gauges for Yang-Mills theories which can be formulated by means of functional integral methods and are thus well suited for analytic calculations, but which are free of Gribov ambiguities and avoid the Neuberger zero problem of the standard Faddeev-Popov construction. The resulting gauge-fixed theory is perturbatively renormalizable in four dimensions and, for what concerns the calculation of ghost and gauge field correlators, it reduces to a massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov action. We study the renormalization group flow of this theory at …
We study the Hamiltonian approach to 1+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, considering both the pure Coulomb gauge and the gauge where in addition the remaining constant gauge field is restricted to the Cartan algebra. We evaluate the corresponding Faddeev-Popov determinants, resolve Gauss' law and derive the Hamiltonians, which differ in both gauges due to additional zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel in the pure Coulomb gauge. By Gauss' law the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel constrain the physical wave functionals to zero colour charge states. We solve the Schroedin…
A deformation of pure Yang-Mill theory by a phantom field similar to the Faddeev-Popov ghost is considered. In this theory an {\em Ersatz}-supersymmetry is identified which results in cancellation of quantum corrections up to two-loop order. A quadruplet built from two complex fields in the adjoint -- the Faddeev-Popov ghost $c^a$ and the phantom $Φ^a$, all with the wrong statistics -- balances four gauge fields $a_μ^a$. At this level, the instanton measure and the $β$ function is fully determined by quasiclassics. In a simple $ϕ^4$ theory with a phantom added I identify a strictly conserved {…
The contributions of the matter superfields and of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts to the $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories defined in terms of the bare couplings are calculated in all orders in the case of using the higher covariant derivative regularization. For this purpose we use the recently proved statement that the $β$-function in these theories is given by integrals of double total derivatives with respect to the loop momenta. These integrals do not vanish due to singularities of the integrands. This implies that the $β$-function beyond the one-loop approximation is …
The Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing in Yang-Mills theory is interpreted as equivariant localization. It is shown that the Faddeev-Popov procedure amounts to a construction of a symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian group action. The BRST cohomology is shown to be equivalent to the equivariant cohomology based on this symplectic manifold with Hamiltonian group action. The ghost operator is interpreted as a (pre)symplectic form and the gauge condition as the moment map corresponding to the Hamiltonian group action. This results in the identification of the gauge fixing action as a closed equivariant…
Two-dimensional heavy-quark QCD is studied in the light-cone coordinates with (anti-) periodic field boundary conditions. We carry out the light-cone quantization of this gauge invariant model. To examine the role of the zero modes of the gauge degrees of freedom, we consider the quantization procedure in the zero mode and the nonzero mode sectors separately. In both sectors, we obtain the physical variables and their canonical (anti-) commutation relations. The physical Hamiltonian is constructed via a step-by-step elimination of the unphysical degrees of freedom. It is shown that the zero mo…
