We consider the flow of an upper convected Maxwell fluid in the limit of high Weissenberg and Reynolds number. In this limit, the no-slip condition cannot be imposed on the solutions. We derive equations for the resulting boundary layer and prove the well-posedness of these equations. A transformation to Lagrangian coordinates is crucial in the argument.
We are concerned with the energy equality for weak solutions to Newtonian and non-Newtonian incompressible fluids. In particular, the results obtained for non-Newtonian fluids, after restriction to the Newtonian case, equal or improve the known results. Furthermore, a new result below allows an interpretation of the classical Shinbrot condition, coherent to the more recent results in the literature.
We identify a class maximal dissipative solutions to models of compressible viscous fluids that maximize the energy dissipation rate. Then we show that any maximal dissipative solution approaches an equilibrium state for large times.

We consider a non-Newtonian fluid flow in a thin domain with thickness $η_\varepsilon$ and an oscillating top boundary of period $\varepsilon$. The flow is described by the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes system with a nonlinear viscosity, being a power of the shear rate (power law) of flow index $p$, with $9/5\leq p<+\infty$. We consider the limit when the thickness tends to zero and we prove that the three characteristic regimes for Newtonian fluids are still valid for non-Newtonian fluids, i.e. Stokes roughness ($η_\varepsilon\approx \varepsilon$), Reynolds roughness ($η_\varepsilon\ll \var…
We consider an viscous, incompressible Newtonian fluid flowing through a thin elastic structure. The motion of the structure is described by the equations of a linearised Koiter shell, whose motion is restricted to transverse displacements. The fluid and the structure are coupled by the continuity of velocities and an equilibrium of surface forces on the interface between fluid and structure. On a fixed in- and outflow region we prescribe natural boundary conditions. We show that weak solutions exist as long as the shell does not self-intersect.
We study a fluid-structure interaction problem describing movement of a rigid body inside a bounded domain filled by a viscous fluid. The fluid is modelled by the generalized incompressible Naiver-Stokes equations which include cases of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via the Navier slip boundary conditions and balance of forces at the fluid-rigid body interface. Our analysis also includes the case of the nonlinear slip condition. The main results assert the existence of strong solutions, in an $L^p-L^q$ setting, globally in time, for small data in …
We consider density dependent, non-Newtonian, incompressible system with the space being flat torus. The viscious stress in the momentum equation is understood through the rheological law and its connection to the proper convex potential. We define the dissipative measure-valued solutions for the aforementioned equations as well as provide a proof of its existence. The main result of this work is the mv-strong uniqueness of the defined solutions.
Steady flows of an incompressible homogeneous chemically reacting fluid are described by a coupled system, consisting of the generalized Navier--Stokes equations and convection - diffusion equation with diffusivity dependent on the concentration and the shear rate. Cauchy stress behaves like power-law fluid with the exponent depending on the concentration. We prove the existence of a classical solution for the two dimensional periodic case whenever the power law exponent is above one and less than infinity.
We consider the motion of a power-law-like generalized Newtonian fluid in R^3, where the power-law index is a variable function. This system of nonlinear partial differential equations arises in mathematical models of electrorheological fluids. The aim of this paper is to investigate the decay properties of strong solutions for the model, based on the Fourier splitting method. We first prove that the L^2-norm of the solution has the decay rate (1 + t)^{-3/4}. If the H^1-norm of the initial data is sufficiently small, we further show that the derivative of the solution decays in L^2-norm at the…
Our paper deals with three-dimensional nonsteady Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian compressible fluids. It contains a~derivation of the relative energy inequality for the weak solutions to these equations. We show that the standard energy inequality implies the relative energy inequality. Consequently, the relative energy inequality allows us to achieve a weak-strong uniqueness result. In other words, we present that the weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system coincides with the strong solution emanated from the same initial conditions as long as the weak solution exists.
We consider the Stokes system in a thin porous medium $Ω_\varepsilon$ of thickness $\varepsilon$ which is perforated by periodically distributed solid cylinders of size $\varepsilon$. On the boundary of the cylinders we prescribe non-homogeneous slip boundary conditions depending on a parameter $γ$. The aim is to give the asymptotic behavior of the velocity and the pressure of the fluid as $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. Using an adaptation of the unfolding method, we give, following the values of $γ$, different limit systems.
We study the flow of two immiscible fluids located on a solid bottom, where the lower fluid is Newtonian and the upper fluid is a non-Newtonian Ellis fluid. Neglecting gravitational effects, we consider the formal asymptotic limit of small film heights in the two-phase Navier--Stokes system. This leads to a strongly coupled system of two parabolic equations of fourth order with merely Hölder-continuous dependence on the coefficients. For the case of strictly positive initial film heights we prove local existence of strong solutions by abstract semigroup theory. Uniqueness is proved by energy m…
We deal with the flows of non-Newtonian fluids in three dimensional setting subjected to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Under the natural monotonicity, coercivity and growth condition on the Cauchy stress tensor expressed by a power index $p\ge 11/5$ we establish regularity properties of a solution with respect to time variable. Consequently, we can use this better information for showing the uniqueness of the solution provided that the initial data are good enough for all power--law indexes $p\ge 11/5$. Such a result was available for $p\ge 12/5$ and therefore the paper fills t…
We study a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the unsteady motions of incompressible chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluids. The system under consideration consists of the generalized Navier-Stokes equations with a power-law type stress-strain relation, where the power-law index depends on the concentration of a chemical, coupled to a convection-diffusion equation for the concentration. This system of equations arises in the rheology of the synovial fluid found in the cavities of synovial joints. We prove the existence of global weak solutions of the non-stationary…
We study the dynamic behaviour of two viscous fluid films confined between two concentric cylinders rotating at a small relative velocity. It is assumed that the fluids are immiscible and that the volume of the outer fluid film is large compared to the volume of the inner one. Moreover, while the outer fluid is considered to have constant viscosity, the rheological behaviour of the inner thin film is determined by a strain-dependent power-law. Starting from a Navier--Stokes system, we formally derive evolution equations for the interface separating the two fluids. Two competing effects drive t…
We study the generalized stationary Stokes system in a bounded domain in the plane equipped with perfect slip boundary conditions. We show natural stability results in oscillatory spaces, i.e. Hölder spaces and Campanato spaces including the border-line spaces of bounded mean oscillations (BMO) and vanishing mean oscillations (VMO). In particular, we show that under appropriate assumptions gradients of solutions are globally continuous. Since the stress tensor is assumed to be governed by a general Orlicz function, our theory includes various cases of (possibly degenerate) shear thickening and…
We consider the system of equations describing the flow of incompressible fluids in bounded domain. In the considered setting, the Cauchy stress tensor is a monotone mapping and has asymptotically $(s-1)$-growth with the parameter $s$ depending on the spatial and time variable. We do not assume any smoothness of $s$ with respect to time variable and assume the log-Hölder continuity with respect to spatial variable. Such a setting is a natural choice if the material properties are instantaneously, e.g. by the switched electric field. We establish the long time and the large data existence of we…
We are concerned with existence of regular solutions for non-Newtonian fluids in dimension three. For a certain type of non-Newtonian fluids we prove local existence of unique regular solutions, provided that the initial data are sufficiently smooth. Moreover, if the $H^3$-norm of initial data is sufficiently small, then the regular solution exists globally in time.
We consider non-Newtonian incompressible 3D fluid of Ladyzhenskaya type, in the setting of the dynamic boundary condition. Assuming sufficient growth rate of the stress tensor with respect to the velocity gradient, we establish explicit dimension estimate of the global attractor in terms of the physical parameters of the problem.
In this study we are interested in the Navier-Stokes-like system for generalized viscous fluids whose viscosity has a power-structure with exponent q. We develop an existence theory of periodic in time weak solutions to the three-dimensional flows subject to a periodic in time force datum whenever q>6/5, which is the optimal bound for the existence of weak solutions.
The hard phase model describes a relativistic barotropic irrotational fluid with sound speed equal to the speed of light. In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness for this model in the Minkowski background with free boundary. Moreover, we show that as the speed of light tends to infinity, the solution of this model converges to the solution of the corresponding Newtonian free boundary problem for incompressible fluids. In the appendix we explain how to extend our proof to the general barotropic fluid free boundary problem.
In this paper we prove optimal error estimates for {solutions with natural regularity} of the equations describing the unsteady motion of incompressible shear-thinning fluids. We consider a full space-time semi-implicit scheme for the discretization. The main novelty, with respect to previous results, is that we obtain the estimates directly without introducing intermediate semi-discrete problems, which enables the treatment of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
In this work, we introduce a notion of dissipative weak solution for a system describing the evolution of a heat-conducting incompressible non-Newtonian fluid. This concept of solution is based on the balance of entropy instead of the balance of energy and has the advantage that it admits a weak-strong uniqueness principle, justifying the proposed formulation. We provide a proof of existence of solutions based on finite element approximations, thus obtaining the first convergence result of a numerical scheme for the full evolutionary system including temperature dependent coefficients and visc…
We propose a semismooth Newton method for non-Newtonian models of incompressible flow where the constitutive relation between the shear stress and the symmetric velocity gradient is given implicitly; this class of constitutive relations captures for instance the models of Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley. The proposed method avoids the use of variational inequalities and is based on a particularly simple regularisation for which the (weak) convergence of the approximate stresses is known to hold. The system is analysed at the function space level and results in mesh-independent behaviour of the no…
