We identify a class maximal dissipative solutions to models of compressible viscous fluids that maximize the energy dissipation rate. Then we show that any maximal dissipative solution approaches an equilibrium state for large times.
The existence of dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations was established in this paper. This notion was inspired by the concept of dissipative solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of Lions (\cite{Lions-1996}, Section 4.4). Our method is to recover such solutions by passing to the limits from approximated solutions, thanks to compactness argument.
We are interested in the multi-dimentional compressible viscoelastic flows of Oldroyd type, which is one of non-Newtonian fluids exhibiting the elastic behavior. In order to capture the damping effect of the additional deformation tensor, to the best of our knowledge, the "div-curl" structural condition plays a key role in previous efforts. Our aim of this paper is to remove the structural condition and prove a global existence of strong solutions to compressible viscoelastic flows in critical spaces. The new ingredient lies in the introduction of effective flux $(θ,\mathcal{G})$, which enable…
Our paper deals with three-dimensional nonsteady Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian compressible fluids. It contains a~derivation of the relative energy inequality for the weak solutions to these equations. We show that the standard energy inequality implies the relative energy inequality. Consequently, the relative energy inequality allows us to achieve a weak-strong uniqueness result. In other words, we present that the weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system coincides with the strong solution emanated from the same initial conditions as long as the weak solution exists.
We consider a generalization of the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations to the case of non-Newtonian fluid in the whole space. The viscosity tensor is assumed to be coercive with an exponent $q>1.$ We prove that if the total mass and momentum of the system are conserved, then one can find a constant $q_0>1$ depending on the dimension of space $n$ and the heat ratio $γ$ such that for $q\in [q_0,n)$ there exists no global in time smooth solution to the Cauchy problem. We prove also an analogous result for solutions to equations of magnetohydrodynamic non-Newtonian fluid in 3D space.
We consider the complete system of equations governing the motion of a general compressible, viscous, electrically and heat conductive fluid driven by non-conservative boundary conditions. We show the existence of a bounded absorbing set in the energy space and asymptotic compactness of trajectories. As a corollary, the set of all entire globally bounded solutions is identified as a natural attractor. Examples of boundary conditions giving rise to unbounded solutions are also discussed.
Following Abbatiello et al. [ DCCDS-A (41), 2020], we introduce dissipative turbulent solutions to a simple model of a mixture of two non interacting compressible fluids {\tc filling a bounded domain with general non zero inflow/outflow boundary conditions.} We prove existence of such solutions for all adiabatic coefficients $γ>1$, their compatibility with classical solutions, the relative energy inequality, and the weak strong uniqueness principle in this class. The class of dissipative turbulent solutions is so far the largest class of generalized solutions which still enjoys the weak strong…
We prove the existence of weak solutions to the steady compressible Navier-Stokes system in the barotropic case for a class of pressure laws singular at vacuum. We consider the problem in a bounded domain in R^2 with slip boundary conditions. Due to appropriate construction of approximate solutions used in proof, obtained density is bounded away from 0 (and infinity). Owing to a classical result by P.-L. Lions, this implies that density and gradient of velocity are at least Hölder continuous, which does not generally hold for the classical isentropic model in the presence of vacuum.
We introduce a new concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system satisfying, in addition, a relevant form of the total energy balance. Then we show that a dissipative measure-valued and a standard smooth classical solution originating from the same initial data coincide (weak-strong uniqueness principle) as long as the latter exists. Such a result facilitates considerably the proof of convergence of solutions to various approximations including certain numerical schemes that are known to generate a measure-valued solution. As a byproduct we show that a…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for one multidimensional compressible nonlocal model of the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations. First, we obtain the local existence and uniqueness of the smooth non-negative solution or the strong solution in time. Secondly, for the sub-critical and critical case $1\leα\leq 2$, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness results of the nonnegative smooth solution. Then, we prove the global existence of the weak solution for $0\le α\le 2$ and $ν\ge 0$. Finally, for the sub-critical case, we establish the global $H^1$ and $L^p, p>2,$ decay rate o…
We address semigroup well-posedness for a linear, compressible viscous fluid interacting at its boundary with an elastic plate. We derive the model by linearizing the compressible Navier-Stokes equations about an arbitrary flow state, so the fluid PDE includes an ambient flow profile $\mathbf{U}$. In contrast to model in [Avalos, Geredeli, Webster, 2017], we track the effect of this term at the flow-structure interface, yielding a velocity matching condition involving the material derivative of the structure; this destroys the dissipative nature of the coupling of the dynamics. We adopt here a…
Motivated by a recent paper by Barrett and Süli [J.W. Barrett & E. Süli: Existence of global weak solutions to compressible isentropic finitely extensible bead-spring chain models for dilute polymers, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci., 26 (2016)], we consider the compressible Navier--Stokes system coupled with a Fokker--Planck type equation describing the motion of polymer molecules in a viscous compressible fluid occupying a bounded spatial domain, with polymer-number-density-dependent viscosity coefficients. The model arises in the kinetic theory of dilute solutions of nonhomogeneous polymeric…
The purpose of this paper is to deal with the issue of well-posedness for a class of non-Newtonian fluid dynamics equations. These sets of equations are commonly used to describe various complex models that appear in nature, industry, and biology. The equations describing the motion of such fluids are characterized by a non-linear constitutive law relating the state of stress to the rate of deformation. We show the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to two important models: the Power Law model and the Bingham model. While our result for the first model holds over a peri…
This paper studies the dissipative structure of the system of equations that describes the motion of a compressible, isothermal, viscous-capillar fluid of Korteweg type in one space dimension. It is shown that the system satisfies the genuine coupling condition of Humpherys (J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ. 2, 2005, no. 4, 963-974), which is, in turn, an extension to higher order systems of the classical condition by Kawashima and Shizuta (Tohoku Math. J. 40, 1988, no. 3, 449-464; Hokkaido Math. J. 14, 1985, no. 2, 249-275) for second order systems. It is proved that genuine coupling implies the dec…
So far existence of dissipative weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. weak solutions satisfying the relative energy inequality) is known only in the case of boundary conditions with non zero inflow/outflow (i.e., in particular, when the normal component of the velocity on the boundary of the ow domain is equal to zero). Most of physical applications (as ows in wind tunnels, pipes, reactors of jet engines) requires to consider non-zero inflow-outflow boundary condtions. We prove existence of dissipative weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in ba…
We introduce a new concept of dissipative varifold solution to models of two phase compressible viscous fluids. In contrast with the existing approach based on the Young measure description, the new formulation is variational combining the energy and momentum balance in a single inequality. We show the existence of dissipative varifold solutions for a large class of general viscous fluids with non--linear dependence of the viscous stress on the symmetric velocity gradient.
We study a general convergence theory for the analysis of numerical solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic system describing the time evolution of compressible, viscous, electrically conducting fluids in space dimension d (= 2; 3). First, we introduce the concept of dissipative weak solutions and prove the weak-strong uniqueness property for dissipative weak solutions, meaning a dissipative weak solution coincides with a classical solution emanating from the same initial data on the lifespan of the latter. Next, we introduce the concept of consistent approximations and prove the convergence of c…
We propose a new approach to models of general compressible viscous fluids based on the concept of dissipative solutions. These are weak solutions satisfying the underlying equations modulo a defect measure. A dissipative solution coincides with the strong solution as long as the latter exists (weak-strong uniqueness) and they solve the problem in the classical sense as soon as they are smooth (compatibility). We consider general models of compressible viscous fluids with non-linear viscosity tensor and non-homogeneous boundary conditions, for which the problem of existence of global-in-time w…
It has been known, since the pioneering works by Serre, Hoff, Vaĭgant-Kazhikhov, Lions and Feireisl, among others, the regularizing properties of the effective viscous flux and its characterization as the function whose gradient is the gradient part in the Hodge decomposition of the Newtonian force of the fluid, when the shear viscosity of the fluid is constant. In this article, we explore further the connection between the Hodge decomposition of the Newtonian force and the regularizing properties of its gradient part, by addressing the problem of the global existence of weak solutions for com…
In this paper, we propose a new approach to singular limits of inviscid fluid flows based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solutions. We show that dissipative measure-valued solutions of the compressible Euler equations converge to the smooth solution of the incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero. This holds both for well-prepared and ill-prepared initial data, where in the latter case the presence of acoustic waves causes difficulties. However this effect is eliminated on unbounded domains thanks to dispersion.
Due to the dissipative structure of \textit{regularity-loss}, extra higher regularity than that for the global-in-time existence is usually imposed to obtain the optimal decay rates of classical solutions to dissipative systems. The aim of this paper is to seek the lowest regularity index for the optimal decay rate of $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Consequently, a notion of minimal decay regularity for dissipative systems of regularity-loss is firstly proposed. To do this, we develop a new time-decay estimate of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{r}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ type b…
We use Feireisl-Lions theory to deduce the existence of weak solutions to a system describing the dynamics of a linear oscillator containing a Newtonian compressible fluid. The appropriate Navier-Stokes equation is considered on a domain whose movement has one degree of freedom. The equation is paired with the Newton law and we assume a no-slip boundary condition.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible Newtonian fluid in a bounded domain with in and out flux boundary conditions. We show that if the boundary velocity coincides with that of a rigid motion, all solutions converge to an equilibrium state for large times.
We consider a singular limit problem for the complete compressible Euler system in the low Mach and strong stratification regime. We identify the limit problem - the anelastic Euler system - in the case of well prepared initial data. The result holds in the large class of the dissipative measure-valued solutions of the primitive system. Applications are discussed to the driven shallow water equations.
We consider the compressible Euler system describing the motion of an ideal fluid confined to a straight layer $Ω_δ=(0,δ)\times\mathbb{R}^2, \ \ δ>0$. In the framework of dissipative measure-valued solutions, we show the convergence to the strong solution of the 2D incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero and $δ\rightarrow0$.
In this paper our goal is to define a renormalised dissipative measure--valued (rDMV) solution of compressible Navier--Stokes system for fluids with non-monotone pressure--density relation. We prove existence of rDMV solutions and establish a suitable relative energy inequality. Moreover we obtain the Weak (Measure-valued)-Strong uniqueness property of this rDMV solution with the help of relative energy inequality.
We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
In this work we will focus on the existence of weak solutions for a system describing a general compressible viscous fluid in the case of the pressure being a linear function of the density and the viscous stress tensor being a non-linear function of the symmetric velocity gradient. More precisely, we will first prove the existence of dissipative solutions and study under which conditions it is possible to guarantee the existence of weak solutions.
We explore the behaviour of global-in-time weak solutions to a class of bead-spring chain models, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials, for dilute polymeric fluids. In the models under consideration the solvent is assumed to be a compressible, isentropic, viscous, isothermal Newtonian fluid, confined to a bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the velocity field is assumed to satisfy a complete slip boundary condition. We show that as the Mach number tends to zero the system is driven to its incompressible counterpart.
In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with linear damping $β(t,x)ρu$ in a bounded domain, which can be used to describe the process of compressible flows through a porous medium.~And the model is imposed a dissipative subsonic time-periodic boundary condition.~Our main results reveal that the time-periodic boundary can trigger a unique subsonic time-periodic smooth solution which is stable under small perturbations on initial data. Moreover, the time-periodic solution possesses higher regularity and stability provided a higher regular boundary c…

We study the Navier--Stokes equations governing the motion of an isentropic compressible fluid in three dimensions interacting with a flexible shell of Koiter type. The latter one constitutes a moving part of the boundary of the physical domain. Its deformation is modeled by a linearized version of Koiter's elastic energy. We show the existence of weak solutions to the corresponding system of PDEs provided the adiabatic exponent satisfies $γ>\frac{12}{7}$ ($γ>1$ in two dimensions). The solution exists until the moving boundary approaches a self-intersection. This provides a compressible counte…
Here we develop a method for investigating global strong solutions of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting. Compared to the recent works by Kawashima and Xu, we use hybrid Besov spaces with different regularity exponent in low and high frequency. This allows to consider more general data and to track the exact dependency on the dissipation parameter for the solution. Our approach enables us to go beyond the L^2 framework in the treatment of the low frequencies of the solution, which is totally new, to the best of our knowledge. Focus is on the one-dimensi…
A system of partial differential equations for a diffusion interface model is considered for the stationary motion of two macroscopically immiscible, viscous Newtonian fluids in a three-dimensional bounded domain. The governing equations consist of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids and a stationary Cahn-Hilliard type equation for the mass concentration difference. Approximate solutions are constructed through a two-level approximation procedure, and the limit of the sequence of approximate solutions is obtained by a weak convergence method. New ideas and estimates …
We study a general convergence theory for the numerical solutions of compressible viscous and electrically conducting fluids with a focus on numerical schemes that preserve the divergence free property of magnetic field exactly. Our strategy utilizes the recent concepts of dissipative weak solutions and consistent approximations. First, we show the dissipative weak--strong uniqueness principle, meaning a dissipative weak solution coincides with a classical solution as long as they emanate from the same initial data. Next, we show the convergence of consistent approximation towards the dissipat…
We present a new derivation for the optimal decay of \textit{arbitrary} higher order derivatives for $L^p$ solutions to the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. This approach, based on Gevrey estimates, is to establish uniform bounds on the growth of the radius of analyticity of the solution in negative Besov norms. For that end, the maximal regularity property involving Gevrey multiplier of heat kernel and non standard product Besov estimates are well developed. Our approach is partly inspired by Oliver-Titi's work and is applicable to a wide range of dissipative systems.
We consider density dependent, non-Newtonian, incompressible system with the space being flat torus. The viscious stress in the momentum equation is understood through the rheological law and its connection to the proper convex potential. We define the dissipative measure-valued solutions for the aforementioned equations as well as provide a proof of its existence. The main result of this work is the mv-strong uniqueness of the defined solutions.

In this paper, we investigate a generic compressible two-fluid model with common pressure ($P^+=P^-$) in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Under some smallness assumptions, Evje-Wang-Wen [Arch Rational Mech Anal 221:1285--1316, 2016] obtained the global solution and its optimal decay rate for the 3D compressible two-fluid model with unequal pressures $P^+\neq P^-$. More precisely, the capillary pressure $f(α^-ρ^-)=P^+-P^-\neq 0$ is taken into account, and is assumed to be a strictly decreasing function near the equilibrium. As indicated by Evje-Wang-Wen, this assumption played an key role in their analysis and …
