This paper studies the dissipative structure of the system of equations that describes the motion of a compressible, isothermal, viscous-capillar fluid of Korteweg type in one space dimension. It is shown that the system satisfies the genuine coupling condition of Humpherys (J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ. 2, 2005, no. 4, 963-974), which is, in turn, an extension to higher order systems of the classical condition by Kawashima and Shizuta (Tohoku Math. J. 40, 1988, no. 3, 449-464; Hokkaido Math. J. 14, 1985, no. 2, 249-275) for second order systems. It is proved that genuine coupling implies the decay of solutions to the linearized system around a constant equilibrium state. For that purpose, the symmetrizability of the Fourier symbol is used in order to construct an appropriate compensating matrix. These linear decay estimates imply the global decay of perturbations to constant equilibrium states as solutions to the full nonlinear system, via a standard continuation argument.
We construct global dissipative solutions on the torus of dimension at most three of the defocusing isothermal Euler-Langevin-Korteweg system, which corresponds to the Euler-Korteweg system of compressible quantum fluids with an isothermal pressure law and a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. In particular, the isothermal feature prevents the energy and the BD-entropy from being positive. Adapting standard approximation arguments we first show the existence of global weak solutions to the defocusing isothermal Navier-Stokes-Langevin-Korteweg system. Introducing a relative entropy f…
The aim of this paper is to show the existence of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded solution operator families for a generalized resolvent problem on the half-space arising from a compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. Such a compressible fluid model was derived by Dunn and Serrin (1985) and studied by Kotschote (2008) as an initial-boundary value problem.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of ${\mathcal R}$-bounded solution operator families for a resolvent problem on the upper half-space arising from a compressible fluid model of Korteweg type with free boundary condition. Such a compressible fluid model was derived by Dunn and Serrin (1985) and studied by Kotschote (2008) as a boundary value problem with non-slip boundary condition.
This paper is concerned with the existence, uniqueness and time-asymptotic stability of time periodic solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system effected by a time periodic external force in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our analysis is based on a combination of the energy method and the time decay estimates of solutions to the linearized system.
This paper is concerned with the existence, uniqueness and nonlinear stability of stationary solutions to the Cauchy problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system effected by external force of general form in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Based on the weighted-$L^2$ method and some elaborate $L^\infty$ estimates of solutions to the linearized problem, the existence and uniqueness of stationary solution are obtained by the contraction mapping principle. The proof of the stability result is given by an elementary energy method and relies on some intrinsic properties of the full compressible N…
In this paper, we consider the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type which can be used as a phase transition model. It is shown that the system admits a unique, global strong solution for small initial data in $\mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 3$. In this study, the main tools are the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity and $L_p$-$L_q$ decay properties of solutions to the linearized equations.
Time decay estimate of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system is studied. Concerning the linearized problem, the decay estimate with diffusion wave property for an initial data is derived. As an application, the time decay estimate of solutions to the nonlinear problem is given. In contrast to the compressible Navier-Stokes system, for linear system regularities of the initial data are lower and independent of the order of derivative of solutions owing to smoothing effect from the Korteweg tensor. Furthermore, for the nonlinear system diffusion wave property is obtained wi…
The global solutions with large initial data for the isothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type has been studied by many authors in recent years. However, little is known of global large solutions to the nonisothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type up to now. This paper is devoted to this problem, and we are concerned with the global existence of smooth and non-vacuum solutions with large initial data to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional nonisothermal compressible fluid models of Korteweg type. The case when the viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$, the capillarity c…
We present a new derivation for the optimal decay of \textit{arbitrary} higher order derivatives for $L^p$ solutions to the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. This approach, based on Gevrey estimates, is to establish uniform bounds on the growth of the radius of analyticity of the solution in negative Besov norms. For that end, the maximal regularity property involving Gevrey multiplier of heat kernel and non standard product Besov estimates are well developed. Our approach is partly inspired by Oliver-Titi's work and is applicable to a wide range of dissipative systems.

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system describing the dynamics of a liquid-vapor mixture with diffuse interphase. The global solutions are established under linear stability conditions in critical Besov spaces. In particular, the sound speed may be greater than or equal to zero. By fully exploiting the parabolic property of the linearized system for all frequencies, we see that there is no loss of derivative usually induced by the pressure for the standard isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system. This enables us to apply Banach's fixed point theorem to show the existen…
Asymptotic profile for diffusion wave terms of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system is studied on $R^2$. The diffusion wave with time decay estimate is studied by Hoff and Zumbrun (1995, 1997), Kobayashi and Shibata (2002) and Kobayashi and Tsuda (2018) for the compressible Navier-Stokes system and the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Our main assertion in this paper is that, for some initial conditions given by the Hardy space, asymptotic behaviors in space-time $L^2$ of the diffusion wave parts are essentially different between density and the potential flow…
This work is devoted to proving existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) \cite{3DS}, which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases when the dimension N=2 and N=1, in the first case we need that $\frac{1}ρ\in L^{\infty}$, when N=1 we get a weak solution in finite time in the energy space.
In this paper, we consider the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type in a critical case where the derivative of pressure equals to $0$ at the given constant state. It is shown that the system admits a unique, global strong solution for small initial data in the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity class. As a result, we also prove the decay estimates of the solutions to the nonliner problem. In order to obtain the global well-posedness for the critical case, we show $L_p$-$L_q$ decay properties of solutions to the linearized equations under an additional assumption for a low frequencies.
We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analys…
This paper is concerned with the time-asymptotic behavior of strong solutions to an initial-boundary value problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system on the half line $\mathbb{R}^+$. The asymptotic profile of the problem is shown to be a shifted viscous shock profile, which is suitably away from the boundary. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data around the shifted viscous shock profile and the strength of the shifted viscous shock profile are sufficiently small, then the problem has a unique global strong solution, which tends to the shifted viscous shock profile as time …
This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional compressible fluid models of Korteweg type with density- and temperature-dependent viscosity, capillarity, and heat conductivity coefficients, which models the motions of compressible viscous fluids with internal capillarity. We show that the combination of the viscous contact wave with two rarefaction waves is asymptotically stable with a large initial perturbation if the strength of the composite wave and the heat conductivity coefficient satisfy some smallness conditions. The proof…
Global existence of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system around a constant state is studied. This system describes liquid-vapor two phase flow with phase transition as diffuse interface model. In previous works they assume that the pressure is a monotone function for change of density similarly to the usual compressible Navier-Stokes system. On the other hand, due to phase transition the pressure is accurately non-monotone function and the linearized system loses symmetry in a critical case such that the derivative of pressure is 0 at the given constant state. It is show…
This paper is dedicated to the study of viscous compressible barotropic fluids in dimension N=2. We address the question of the global existence of strong solutions with large initial data for compressible Navier-Stokes system and Korteweg system. In the first case we are interested by slightly extending a famous result due to V. A. Vaigant and A. V. Kazhikhov in \cite{VG} concerning the existence of global strong solution in dimension two for a suitable choice of viscosity coefficient ($μ(ρ)=μ>0$ and $λ(ρ)=λρ^β$ with $β>3$) in the torus. We are going to weaken the condition on $β$ by assuming…
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
In this paper, we consider global weak solutions to com-pressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with density dependent viscosities , in a periodic domain $Ω= \mathbb T^3$, with a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. The main result concerns the exponential decay to equilibrium of such solutions using log-sobolev type inequalities. In order to show such a result, the starting point is a global weak-entropy solutions definition introduced in D. Bresch, A. Vasseur and C. Yu [12]. Assuming extra assumptions on the shear viscosity when the density is close to vacuum and when the densit…
This work is devoted to prove existence of global weak solutions for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.- E Dunn and J. Serrin (1985) [6], which can be used as a phase transition model. We improve the results of [5] by showing the existence of global weak solution in dimension two for initial data in the energy space, close to a stable equilibrium and with specific choices on the capillary coefficients. In particular we are interested in capillary coefficients approximating a constant capillarity coefficient. To finish we show the existence of global weak solution in d…

We prove the existence of a weak solution to a non-isothermal compressible model for nematic liquid crystals. An initial-boundary value problem is studied in a bounded domain with large data. The existence of a global weak solution is established through a three-level approximation, energy estimates, and weak convergence for the adiabatic exponent γ>3/2.
This work is devoted to the study of the initial boundary value problem for a general non isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985), which can be used as a phase transition model. We distinguish two cases, when the physical coefficients depend only on the density, and the general case. In the first case we can work in critical scaling spaces, and we prove global existence of solution and uniqueness for data close to a stable equilibrium. For general data, existence and uniqueness is stated on a short time interval. In the general case with physical coefficien…
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the initial value problem for the Euler system of compressible fluids and augmented versions containing higher-order terms. We encompass solutions that have finite total energy and enjoy a certain symmetry (for instance, plane symmetry); these solutions may have unbounded amplitude and contain cavitation regions in which the mass density vanishes. In the present paper, we are interested in dispersive shock waves and analyze the zero viscosity-capillarity limit associated with the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system. Specifically, we establish the ex…
We introduce a simple model of the time evolution of a binary mixture of compressible fluids including the thermal effects. Despite its apparent simplicity, the model is thermodynamically consistent admitting an entropy balance equation. We introduce a suitable weak formulation of the problem based on a combination of the entropy inequality with the total energy conservation principle. Finally, we show compactness of any bounded family of weak solutions and establish a global existence result.
We consider the initial-boundary value problem for the system of equations describing the flow of compressible isothermal mixture of arbitrary large number of components. The system consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and a subsystem of diffusion equations for the species. The subsystems are coupled by the form of the pressure and the strong cross-diffusion effects in the diffusion fluxes of the species. Assuming the existence of solutions to the symmetrized and linearized equations, proven in [35], we derive the estimates for the nonlinear equations and prove the local-in-tim…
Formulated by Blesgen and Lowengrub and Truskinovsky, the `Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn' (NSAC) equations and the `Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard' (NSCH) equations describe diphasic fluid flow, combining the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy with a balance law for the phases, which governs the concentration of one, and thus the other, phase as an order parameter. By contrast, the `Navier-Stokes-Korteweg' (NSK) theory for the dynamics of a one-phase capillary fluid, given by Dunn and Serrin following Korteweg and Slemrod, uses only the three said conservation laws and has the mass densi…

On the Cauchy problem for the multi-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system: Global strong solutions with arbitrarily large initial data
State Key Laboratory of Mathematical Sciences, Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院数学与系统科学研究院数学科学学院)
We study the compressible and incompressible two-phase flows separated by a sharp interface with a phase transition and a surface tension. In particular, we consider the problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations is used in the upper domain and the Navier-Stokes equations is used in the lower domain. We prove the existence of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded solution operator families for a resolvent problem arising from its model problem. According to Shibata \cite{GS2014}, the regularity of $ρ_+$ is $W^1_q$ in space, but to solve the kinetic equation: $\mathbf{u}_Γ\cdot\mathbf{…
Our paper deals with three-dimensional nonsteady Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian compressible fluids. It contains a~derivation of the relative energy inequality for the weak solutions to these equations. We show that the standard energy inequality implies the relative energy inequality. Consequently, the relative energy inequality allows us to achieve a weak-strong uniqueness result. In other words, we present that the weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system coincides with the strong solution emanated from the same initial conditions as long as the weak solution exists.
In the paper we prove the existence results for initial-value boundary value problems for compressible isothermal Navier-Stokes equations. We restrict ourselves to 2D case of a problem with no-slip condition for nonstationary motion of viscous compressible isothermal fluid. However, the technique of modeling and analysis presented here is general and can be used for 3D problems.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the regime of high Mach number flows for compressible barotropic fluids of Korteweg type with density dependent viscosity. In particular we consider the models for isothermal capillary and quantum compressible fluids. For the capillary case we prove the existence of weak solutions and related properties for the system without pressure, and the convergence of the solution in the high Mach number limit. This latter is proved also in the quantum case for which a weak-strong uniqueness analysis is also discussed in the framework of the so-called "augmented" …
Global solutions to the compressible Euler equations with heat transport by convection in the whole space are shown to exist through perturbations of Dyson's isothermal affine solutions. This setting presents new difficulties because of the vacuum at infinity behavior of the density. In particular, the perturbation of isothermal motion introduces a Gaussian function into our stability analysis and a novel finite propagation result is proven to handle potentially unbounded terms arising from the presence of the Gaussian. Crucial stabilization-in-time effects of the background motion are mitigat…
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
We prove the existence of relative finite-energy vanishing viscosity solutions of the one-dimensional, isentropic Euler equations under the assumption of an asymptotically isothermal pressure law, that is, $p(ρ)/ρ= O(1)$ in the limit $ρ\to \infty$. This solution is obtained as the vanishing viscosity limit of classical solutions of the one-dimensional, isentropic, compressible Navier--Stokes equations. Our approach relies on the method of compensated compactness to pass to the limit rigorously in the nonlinear terms. Key to our strategy is the derivation of hyperbolic representation formulas f…
In this paper we are interested in the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a non-local capillarity tensor depending on a small parameter $ε$ such that it heuristically tends to the local Korteweg system. After giving some physical motivations related to the theory of non-classical shocks (see [28]) we prove global well-posedness (in the whole space $R^d$ with $d\geq 2$) for the non-local model and we also prove the convergence, as $ε$ goes to zero, to the solution of the local Korteweg system.
