In this paper we prove optimal error estimates for {solutions with natural regularity} of the equations describing the unsteady motion of incompressible shear-thinning fluids. We consider a full space-time semi-implicit scheme for the discretization. The main novelty, with respect to previous results, is that we obtain the estimates directly without introducing intermediate semi-discrete problems, which enables the treatment of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
In this work, we introduce a notion of dissipative weak solution for a system describing the evolution of a heat-conducting incompressible non-Newtonian fluid. This concept of solution is based on the balance of entropy instead of the balance of energy and has the advantage that it admits a weak-strong uniqueness principle, justifying the proposed formulation. We provide a proof of existence of solutions based on finite element approximations, thus obtaining the first convergence result of a numerical scheme for the full evolutionary system including temperature dependent coefficients and visc…
In this work, we design and analyze a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) discretization method for incompressible flows of non-Newtonian fluids with power-like convective behaviour. We work under general assumptions on the viscosity and convection laws, that are associated with possibly different Sobolev exponents r > 1 and s > 1. After providing a novel weak formulation of the continuous problem, we study its well-posedness highlighting how a subtle interplay between the exponents r and s determines the existence and uniqueness of a solution. We next design an HHO scheme based on this weak formulation a…
We propose an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for a three-field stress-velocity-pressure discretization of stationary non-Newtonian incompressible flow with an implicit constitutive relation of power-law type. The discretization employed makes use of the divergence-free Scott-Vogelius pair for the velocity and pressure. The preconditioner builds on the work [P. E. Farrell, L. Mitchell, and F. Wechsung, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 41 (2019), pp. A3073-A3096], where a Reynolds-robust preconditioner for the three-dimensional Newtonian system was introduced. The preconditioner employs a specialized …
Most research on preconditioners for time-dependent PDEs has focused on implicit multi-step or diagonally-implicit multi-stage temporal discretizations. In this paper, we consider monolithic multigrid preconditioners for fully-implicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration methods. These temporal discretizations have very attractive accuracy and stability properties, but they couple the spatial degrees of freedom across multiple time levels, requiring the solution of very large linear systems. We extend the classical Vanka relaxation scheme to implicit RK discretizations of saddle poin…
We investigate both theoretically and numerically the consistency between the nonlinear discretization in full order models (FOMs) and reduced order models (ROMs) for incompressible flows. To this end, we consider two cases: (i) FOM-ROM consistency, i.e., when we use the same nonlinearity discretization in the FOM and ROM; and (ii) FOM-ROM inconsistency, i.e., when we use different nonlinearity discretizations in the FOM and ROM. Analytically, we prove that while the FOM-ROM consistency yields optimal error bounds, FOM-ROM inconsistency yields additional terms dependent on the FOM divergence e…
In this work, we consider pressurized phase-field fracture problems in nearly and fully incompressible materials. To this end, a mixed form for the solid equations is proposed. To enhance the accuracy of the spatial discretization, a residual-type error estimator is developed. Our algorithmic advancements are substantiated with several numerical tests that are inspired from benchmark configurations. Therein, a primal-based formulation is compared to our newly developed mixed phase-field fracture method for Poisson ratios approaching $ν\to 0.5$. Finally, for $ν= 0.5$, we compare the numerical r…
We introduce a mimetic dual-field discretization which conserves mass, kinetic energy and helicity for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The discretization makes use of a conservative dual-field mixed weak formulation where two evolution equations of velocity are employed and dual representations of the solution are sought for each variable. A temporal discretization, which staggers the evolution equations and handles the nonlinearity such that the resulting discrete algebraic systems are linear and decoupled, is constructed. The spatial discretization is mimetic in the…
We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
We construct finite element methods for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system that precisely preserve magnetic and cross helicity, the energy law and the magnetic Gauss law at the discrete level. The variables are discretized as discrete differential forms in a de Rham complex. We present numerical tests to show the performance of the algorithm.
Augmented Lagrangian preconditioners have successfully yielded Reynolds-robust preconditioners for the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, but only for specific discretizations. The discretizations for which these preconditioners have been designed possess error estimates which depend on the Reynolds number, with the discretization error deteriorating as the Reynolds number is increased. In this paper we present an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for the Scott-Vogelius discretization on barycentrically-refined meshes. This achieves both Reynolds-robust performance and Reynol…
We introduce and analyze a Statically Condensed Iterated Penalty (SCIP) method for solving incompressible flow problems discretized with $p$th-order Scott-Vogelius elements. While the standard iterated penalty method is often the preferred algorithm for computing the discrete solution, it requires inverting a linear system with $\mathcal{O}(p^{d})$ unknowns at each iteration. The SCIP method reduces the size of this system to $\mathcal{O}(p^{d-1})$ unknowns while maintaining the geometric rate of convergence of the iterated penalty method. The application of SCIP to Kovasznay flow and Moffatt …

We consider a stabilization method for divergence-conforming B-spline discretizations of the incompressible Navier--Stokes problem wherein jumps in high-order normal derivatives of the velocity field are penalized across interior mesh facets. We prove that this method is pressure robust, consistent, and energy stable, and we show how to select the stabilization parameter appearing in the method so that excessive numerical dissipation is avoided in both the cross-wind direction and in the diffusion-dominated regime. We examine the efficacy of the method using a suite of numerical experiments, a…
A fully discretization, unconditionally energy stable finite element method solving the thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model for incompressible two-phase MHD flows with large density ratios
In the present contribution, we construct a virtual element (VE) discretization for the problem of miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another, described by a time-dependent coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations. Our work represents a first study to investigate the premises of virtual element methods (VEM) for complex fluid flow problems. We combine the VEM discretization with a time stepping scheme and develop a complete theoretical analysis of the method under the assumption of a regular solution. The scheme is then tested both on a regular and on a more…
In this paper we present an efficient discretization method for the solution of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on a high order (Hybrid) Discontinuous Galerkin formulation. The crucial component for the efficiency of the discretization method is the disctinction between stiff linear parts and less stiff non-linear parts with respect to their temporal and spatial treatment. Exploiting the flexibility of operator-splitting time integration schemes we combine two spatial discretizations which are tailored for two simpler sub-problems: a corresponding hyperbolic transport…
A numerical method for the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in vorticity--streamfunction form is proposed, which employs semi-Lagrangian discretizations for both the advection and diffusion terms, thus achieving unconditional stability without the need to solve linear systems beyond that required by the Poisson solver for the reconstruction of the streamfunction. A description of the discretization of Dirichlet boundary conditions for the semi-Lagrangian approach to diffusion terms is also presented. Numerical experiments on classical benchmarks for incompressible flow …
We propose a semismooth Newton method for non-Newtonian models of incompressible flow where the constitutive relation between the shear stress and the symmetric velocity gradient is given implicitly; this class of constitutive relations captures for instance the models of Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley. The proposed method avoids the use of variational inequalities and is based on a particularly simple regularisation for which the (weak) convergence of the approximate stresses is known to hold. The system is analysed at the function space level and results in mesh-independent behaviour of the no…
We investigate novel fitted finite element approximations for two-phase Navier--Stokes flow. In particular, we consider both Eulerian and Arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) finite element formulations. The moving interface is approximated with the help of parametric piecewise linear finite element functions. The bulk mesh is fitted to the interface approximation, so that standard bulk finite element spaces can be used throughout. The meshes describing the discrete interface in general do not deteriorate in time, which means that in numerical simulations a smoothing or a remeshing of the inte…
We consider proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) methods to approximate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We study the case in which one discretization for the nonlinear term is used in the snapshots (that are computed with a full order method (FOM)) and a different discretization of the nonlinear term is applied in the POD method. We prove that an additional error term appears in this case, compared with the case in which the same discretization of the nonlinear term is applied for both the FOM and the POD methods. However, the added term has the same size as the error coming from …
In a plane polygon $P$ with straight sides, we prove analytic regularity of the Leray-Hopf solution of the stationary, viscous, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We assume small data, analytic volume force and no-slip boundary conditions. Analytic regularity is quantified in so-called countably normed, corner-weighted spaces with homogeneous norms. Implications of this analytic regularity include exponential smallness of Kolmogorov $N$-widths of solutions, exponential convergence rates of mixed $hp$-discontinuous Galerkin finite element and spectral element discretizations and of mod…
This paper presents a Crank-Nicolson leap-frog (CNLF) scheme for the unsteady incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The spatial discretization adopts the Galerkin finite element method (FEM), and the temporal discretization employs the CNLF method for linear terms and the semi-implicit method for nonlinear terms. The first step uses Stokes style's scheme, the second step employs the Crank-Nicolson extrapolation scheme, and others apply the CNLF scheme. We testify that the fully discrete scheme is stable and convergent when the time step is less than or equal to a positive consta…
Quasi-Optimal Error Estimates for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Problem Discretized by Finite Element Methods and Pressure-Correction Projection with Velocity Stabilization
Computations of incompressible flows with velocity boundary conditions require solution of a Poisson equation for pressure with all Neumann boundary conditions. Discretization of such a Poisson equation results in a rank-deficient matrix of coefficients. When a non-conservative discretization method such as finite difference, finite element, or spectral scheme is used, such a matrix also generates an inconsistency which makes the residuals in the iterative solution to saturate at a threshold level that depends on the spatial resolution and order of the discretization scheme. In this paper, we …
We propose in this paper a discretization of the momentum convection operator for fluid flow simulations on quadrangular or hexahedral meshes. The space discretization is performed by the loworder nonconforming Rannacher-Turek finite element: the scalar unknowns are associated to the cells of the mesh, while the velocities unknowns are associated to the edges or faces. The momentum convection operator is of finite volume type, and its almost second order expression is derived by a MUSCL-like technique. The latter is of algebraic type, in the sense that the limitation procedure does not invoke …
Within the last years pressure robust methods for the discretization of incompressible fluids have been developed. These methods allow the use of standard finite elements for the solution of the problem while simultaneously removing a spurious pressure influence in the approximation error of the velocity of the fluid, or the displacement of an incompressible solid. To this end, reconstruction operators are utilized mapping discretely divergence free functions to divergence free functions. This work shows that the modifications proposed for Stokes equation by Linke (2014) also yield gradient ro…
