We investigate the concordance properties of `parallel links' P(K), given by the (2,0) cable of a knot K. We focus on the question: if P(K) is concordant to a split link, is K necessarily slice? We show that if P(K) is smoothly concordant to a split link, then many smooth concordance invariants of K must vanish, including the tau and s-invariants, and suitably normalized d-invariants of surgeries on K. We also investigate the (2,2m) cables P_m(K), and find obstructions to smooth concordance to the sum of the (2,2m) torus link and a split link.
We prove the analogue of the Concordance Implies Isotopy in Codimension $\ge 3$ Theorem for link maps, together with some other its singular analogues. In the case of spherical link maps, a stronger result was independently obtained by P. Teichner (by different methods).
Fixing two concordant links in $3$--space, we study the set of all embedded concordances between them, as knotted annuli in $4$--space. When regarded up to surface-concordance or link-homotopy, the set $\mathcal{C}(L)$ of concordances from a link $L$ to itself forms a group. In order to investigate these groups, we define Milnor-type invariants of $\mathcal{C}(L)$, which are integers defined modulo a certain indeterminacy given by Milnor invariants of $L$. We show in particular that, for a slice link $L$, these invariants classify $\mathcal{C}(L)$ up to link-homotopy.
We construct links of arbitrarily many components each component of which is slice and yet are not concordant to any link with even one unknotted component. The only tool we use comes from the Alexander modules.
We introduce a generalization of the Ozsváth-Szabó $τ$-invariant to links by studying a filtered version of link grid homology. We prove that this invariant remains unchanged under strong concordance and we show that it produces a lower bound for the slice genus of a link. We show that this bound is sharp for torus links and we also give an application to Legendrian link invariants in the standard contact 3-sphere.
We can construct a 4-manifold by attaching 2-handles to a 4-ball with framing r along the components of a link in the boundary of the 4-ball. We define a link as r-shake slice if there exists embedded spheres that represent the generators of the second homology of the 4-manifold. This naturally extends r-shake slice, a generalization of slice that has previously only been studied for knots, to links of more than one component. We also define a relative notion of shake r-concordance for links and versions with stricter conditions on the embedded spheres that we call strongly r-shake slice and s…
It was recently proved by several authors that ribbon concordances induce injective maps in knot Floer homology, Khovanov homology, and the Heegaard Floer homology of the branched double cover. We give a simple proof of a similar statement in a more general setting, which includes knot Floer homology, Khovanov-Rozansky homologies, and all conic strong Khovanov-Floer theories. This gives a philosophical answer to the question of which aspects of a link TQFT make it injective under ribbon concordances.
In the present paper we extend the definition of slice-torus invariant to links. We prove a few properties of the newly-defined slice-torus link invariants: the behaviour under crossing change, a slice genus bound, an obstruction to strong sliceness, and a combinatorial bound. Furthermore, we provide an application to the computation of the splitting number. Finally, we use the slice-torus link invariants, and the Whitehead doubling to define new strong concordance invariants for links, which are proven to be independent from the corresponding slice-torus link invariant.
We show that if a link J in the 3-sphere is homotopy ribbon concordant to a link L then the Alexander polynomial of L divides the Alexander polynomial of J.
We use the Bar-Natan Zh-correspondence to identify the generalized Alexander polynomial of a virtual knot with the Alexander polynomial of a two component welded link. We show that the Zh-map is functorial under concordance, and also that Satoh's Tube map (from welded links to ribbon knotted tori in $S^4$) is functorial under concordance. In addition, we extend classical results of Chen, Milnor, and Hillman on the lower central series of link groups to links in thickened surfaces. Our main result is that the generalized Alexander polynomial vanishes on any knot in a thickened surface which is …
A cobordism between links in thickened surfaces consists of a surface $ S $ and a $3$-manifold $M $, with $ S $ properly embedded in $ M \times I $. We show that there exist links in thickened surfaces such that if $(S,M) $ is a cobordism between them in which $ S $ is simple, then $ M $ must be complex. That is, there are cases in which low complexity of the surface does not imply low complexity of the $3$-manifold. Specifically, we show that there exist concordant links in thickened surfaces between which a concordance can only be realised by passing through thickenings of higher genus surfa…
Using the Gordon-Litherland pairing, one can define invariants (signature, nullity, determinant) for ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous links in thickened surfaces. In this paper, we study the concordance properties of these invariants. For example, if $K \subset Σ\times I$ is ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous and slice, we show that its signatures vanish and its determinants are perfect squares. These statements are derived from a cobordism result for closed unoriented surfaces in certain 4-manifolds. The Brown invariants are defined for ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous links in thickened surfaces.…
Milnor's $\barμ$-invariants of links in the $3$-sphere $S^3$ vanish on any link concordant to a boundary link. In particular, they are trivial on any knot in $S^3$. Here we consider knots in thickened surfaces $Σ\times [0,1]$, where $Σ$ is closed and oriented. We construct new concordance invariants by adapting the Chen-Milnor theory of links in $S^3$ to an extension of the group of a virtual knot. A key ingredient is the Bar-Natan $\textit{Zh}$ map, which allows for a geometric interpretation of the group extension. The group extension itself was originally defined by Silver-Williams. Our ext…
Shake slice generalizes the notion of a slice link, naturally extending the notion of shake slice knots to links. There is also a relative version, shake concordance, that generalizes link concordance. We show that if two links are shake concordant, then their zero surgery manifolds are homology cobordant. Then we give several obstructions to a link being shake slice; for instance, the Arf invariants vanish for both the link and each component. Finally we show that a shake slice link bounds disjoint disks in a homology 4-ball and hence each component is algebraically slice.
