We study instanton partition functions for N=2 superconformal Sp(1) and SO(4) gauge theories. We find that they agree with the corresponding U(2) instanton partitions functions only after a non-trivial mapping of the microscopic gauge couplings, since the instanton counting involves different renormalization schemes. Geometrically, this mapping relates the Gaiotto curves of the different realizations as double coverings. We then formulate an AGT-type correspondence between Sp(1)/SO(4) instanton partition functions and chiral blocks with an underlying W(2,2)-algebra symmetry. This form of the correspondence eliminates the need to divide out extra U(1) factors. Finally, to check this correspondence for linear quivers, we compute expressions for the Sp(1)-SO(4) half-bifundamental.
We consider the problem of computing (irregular) conformal blocks in 2d CFTs whose chiral symmetry algebra is the N=2 superconformal algebra. Our construction uses two ingredients: (i) the relation between the representation theories of the N=2 superconformal algebra and the affine sl(2) algebra, extended to the level of the conformal blocks, and (ii) the relation between affine sl(2) conformal blocks and instanton partition functions in the 4d N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with a surface defect. By combining these two facts we derive combinatorial expressions for the N=2 superconformal blocks in the…
Building on our previous work [2109.01110], we will compute a new kind of $G_2$ instanton partition function. By doing so, we complete a set of building blocks of the instanton partition function associated with a large class of $G_2$ manifolds.
We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kahler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson-Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspond…
Using a formalism of minitwistors, we derive infinitely many conserved charges for the $sl(\infty )$-Toda equation which accounts for gravitational instantons with a rotational Killing symmetry. These charges are shown to form an infinite dimensional algebra through the Poisson bracket which is isomorphic to two dimensional area preserving diffeomorphism with central extentions.
For arbitrary gauge groups, we check at the one-instanton level that the Nekrasov partition function of pure N=2 super Yang-Mills is equal to the norm of a certain coherent state of the corresponding W-algebra. For non-simply-laced gauge groups, we confirm in particular that the coherent state is in the twisted sector of a simply-laced W-algebra.
This is the third article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. It is explained how to compute the instanton partition functions. The results can be written as sums over bases for the equivariant cohomology of instanton moduli spaces. The known results relating the symmetries of these spaces to the symmetries of conformal field theory are reviewed.
Various constructions of the affine Lie algebra action on the homology group of moduli spaces of instantons on 4-manifolds are discussed. The analogy between the local-global principle and the role of mass is also explained. The detailed proofs are given in separated papers \cite{Na-algebra,Na-Hilbert}.
We write down an explicit conjecture for the instanton partition functions in 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a certain type of surface operator. These surface operators are classified by partitions of N, and for each partition there is an associated partition function. For the partition N=N we recover the Nekrasov formalism, and when N=1+...+1 we reproduce the result of Feigin et. al. For the case N=1+(N-1) our expression is consistent with an alternative formulation in terms of a restricted SU(N)xSU(N) instanton partition function. When N=1+...+1+2 the partition functions can …
It has been constructed the quantum super fuzzy Dirac and chirality operators on q-deformed super fuzzy sphere. Using the quantum super fuzzy Ginsparg-Wilson algebra, it has been studied the q-deformed super gauged fuzzy Dirac and chirality operators in instanton sector. It has been showed that they have correct commutative limit in the limit case when noncommutative parameter $ l $ tends to infinity and q tends to unit.
We show that supersymmetric gauge theories with a product gauge group admit quasi-instantons, which, like instantons, sit at the absolute minimum of the action in the corresponding topological sector. However, unlike ordinary instantons which preserve part of the supersymmetry, these break all supersymmetries of the action. We also provide a generalization where quasi-instantons take value in the associated Lie algebra of the recently proposed 3-algebras. When the structure constants and the metric of the algebra are covariantly constant, the gauge bundle admits new topological sectors with qu…
We define an action of the (double of) Cohomological Hall algebra of Kontsevich and Soibelman on the cohomology of the moduli space of spiked instantons of Nekrasov. We identify this action with the one of the affine Yangian of $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$. Based on that we derive the vertex algebra at the corner $\mathcal{W}_{r_1,r_2,r_3}$ of Gaiotto and Rapcak. We conjecture that our approach works for a big class of Calabi-Yau categories, including those associated with toric Calabi-Yau $3$-folds.
We study Nekrasov's instanton partition function of four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories in the presence of surface operators. This can be computed order by order in the instanton expansion by using results available in the mathematical literature. Focusing in the case of SU(2) quiver gauge theories, we find that the results agree with a modified version of the conformal blocks of affine SL(2) Lie algebra. These conformal blocks provide, in the critical limit, the eigenfunctions of the corresponding quantized Hitchin Hamiltonians.
This is the first in a series of papers which describe the action of an affine Lie algebra with central charge $n$ on the moduli space of $U(n)$-instantons on a four manifold $X$. This generalises work of Nakajima, who considered the case when $X$ is an ALE space. In particular, this describes the combinatorial complexity of the moduli space as being precisely that of representation theory, and thus will lead to a description of the Betti numbers of moduli space as dimensions of weight spaces. This Lie algebra acts on the space of conformal blocks (iė\., the cohomology of a determinant line bu…
We provide evidence that the conformal blocks of N=1 super Liouville conformal field theory are described in terms of the SU(2) Nekrasov partition function on the ALE space O_{P^1}(-2).
The conjecture about the correspondence between instanton partition functions in the N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theory and conformal blocks of two-dimensional conformal field theories is extended to the case of the N=1 supersymmetric conformal blocks. We find that the necessary modification of the moduli space of instantons requires additional restriction of Z(2)-symmetry. This leads to an explicit form of the N=1 superconformal blocks in terms of Young diagrams with two sorts of cells.
We explore N=(1,0) superconformal six-dimensional theories arising from M5-branes probing a transverse A_k singularity. Upon circle compactification to 5 dimensions, we describe this system with a dual pq-web of five-branes and propose the spectrum of basic five-dimensional instanton operators driving global symmetry enhancement. For a single M5-brane, we find that the exact partition function of the 5d quiver gauge theory matches the 6d (1,0) index, which we compute by letter counting. We finally show that S-duality of the pq-web implies new relations among vertex correlators of qW-algebrae.
In this short note, we present some evidence towards the existence of an algebra of BPS $G_2$ instantons. These are instantonic configurations that govern the partition functions of 7d SYM theories on local $G_2$ holonomy manifolds $\mathcal X$. To shed light on such structure, we begin investigating the relation with parent 4d $\mathcal N=1$ theories obtained by geometric engineering M-theory on $\mathcal X$. The main point of this paper is to substantiate the following dream: the holomorphic sector of such theories on multi-centered Taub-NUT spaces gives rise to an algebra whose characters o…
We study the extended prepotentials for the S-duality class of quiver gauge theories, considering them as quasiclassical tau-functions, depending on gauge theory condensates and bare couplings. The residue formulas for the third derivatives of extended prepotentials are proven, which lead to effective way of their computation, as expansion in the weak-coupling regime. We discuss also the differential equations, following from the residue formulas, including the WDVV equations, proven to be valid for the $SU(2)$ quiver gauge theories. As a particular example we consider the constrained conforma…
We propose and demonstrate a limiting procedure in which, starting from the q-lifted version (or K-theoretic five dimensional version) of the (W)AGT conjecture to be assumed in this paper, the Virasoro/W block is generated in the r-th root of unity limit in q in the 2d side, while the same limit automatically generates the projection of the five dimensional instanton partition function onto that on the ALE space R^4/Z_r. This circumvents case-by-case conjectures to be made in a wealth of examples found so far. In the 2d side, we successfully generate the super-Virasoro algebra and the proper s…
We describe the (equivariant) intersection cohomology of certain moduli spaces ("framed Uhlenbeck spaces") together with some structures on them (such as e.g.\ the Poincaré pairing) in terms of representation theory of some vertex operator algebras ("$\mathscr W$-algebras").
We introduce the notion of the (instanton part of the) Seiberg-Witten prepotential for general Schrodinger operators with periodic potential. In the case when the operator in question is integrable we show how to compute the prepotential in terms of period integrals; this implies that in the integrable case our definition of the prepotential coincides with the one that has been extensively studied in both mathematical and physical literature. As an application we give a proof of Nekrasov's conjecture connecting certain "instanton counting" partition function for an arbitrary simple group G wit…
Generalizations of the AGT correspondence between 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ supersymmetric gauge theory on ${\mathbb {C}}^2$ with $Ω$-deformation and 2D Liouville conformal field theory include a correspondence between 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ supersymmetric gauge theories, $N = 2, 3, \ldots$, on ${\mathbb {C}}^2/{\mathbb {Z}}_n$, $n = 2, 3, \ldots$, with $Ω$-deformation and 2D conformal field theories with $\mathcal{W}^{\, para}_{N, n}$ ($n$-th parafermion $\mathcal{W}_N$) symmetry and $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n)_N$ symmetry. In this work, we trivialize the factor with $\mathcal{W}^{\, par…
Recently Alday and Tachikawa proposed a relation between conformal blocks in a two-dimensional theory with affine sl(2) symmetry and instanton partition functions in four-dimensional conformal N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a certain surface operator. In this paper we extend this proposal to a relation between conformal blocks in theories with affine sl(N) symmetry and instanton partition functions in conformal N=2 SU(N) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a surface operator. We also discuss the extension to non-conformal N=2 SU(N) theories.
We explore the correspondence between Yang-Mills instantons and algebraic curves. The curve is defined by Higgs zero locus of dyonic instantons in 1+4 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and it is identified in string theory with the cross-section of supertubes connecting parallel D4-branes. To present evidence for the identification, we show that with total charges fixed, the supertube angular momentum computed from the Higgs zero locus is maximized when the locus is circular, which has been proven for the cross-section of the supertubes. This leads to a consistent dictionary between the cha…
A surprising connection between N=2 gauge theory instanton partition functions and conformal blocks has been recently proposed. We illustrate through simple examples the generalization to asymptotically free N=2 gauge theories
We study conformal field theory with the symmetry algebra $\mathcal{A}(2,p)=\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n)_{2}/\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n-p)_2$. In order to support the conjecture that this algebra acts on the moduli space of instantons on $\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$, we calculate the characters of its representations and check their coincidence with the generating functions of the fixed points of the moduli space of instantons. We show that the algebra $\mathcal{A}(2,p)$ can be realized in two ways. The first realization is connected with the cross-product of $p$ Virasoro and $p$ Heisenberg algebras: …
A recently proposed correspondence between 4-dimensional N=2 SUSY SU(k) gauge theories on R^4/Z_m and SU(k) Toda-like theories with Z_m parafermionic symmetry is used to construct four-point N=1 super Liouville conformal block, which corresponds to the particular case k=m=2. The construction is based on the conjectural relation between moduli spaces of SU(2) instantons on R^4/Z_2 and algebras like \hat{gl}(2)_2\times NSR. This conjecture is confirmed by checking the coincidence of number of fixed points on such instanton moduli space with given instanton number N and dimension of subspace degr…
The basic objects of the ADHM construction are reformulated in terms of elements of the $A_θ(R^4)$ algebra of the noncommutative $R_θ^4$ space. This new formulation of the ADHM construction makes possible the explicit calculus of the U(2) instanton number which is shown to be the product of a trace of finite rank projector of the Fock representation space of the algebra $A_θ(R^4)$ times a noncommutative version of the winding number.
We study the 4d/2d AGT correspondence between four-dimensional instanton counting and two-dimensional conformal blocks for generalized SU(2) quiver gauge theories coming from punctured Gaiotto curves of arbitrary genus. We propose a conformal block description that corresponds to the elementary SU(2) trifundamental half-hypermultiplet, and check it against Sp(1)-SO(4) instanton counting.
We glue four refined topological vertices to obtain the building block of 5D $U(2)$ quiver instanton partition functions. We take the 4D limit of the result to obtain the building block of 4D instanton partition functions which, using the AGT correspondence, are identified with Virasoro conformal blocks. We show that there is a choice of the parameters of the topological vertices that we start with, as well as the parameters and the intermediate states involved in the gluing procedure, such that we obtain Virasoro minimal model conformal blocks.
The aim of this memoir for "Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches" is to present quantum geometric and algebraic aspects of supersymmetric gauge theory, which emerge from non-perturbative nature of the vacuum structure induced by instantons. We start with a brief summary of the equivariant localization of the instanton moduli space, and show how to obtain the instanton partition function and its generalization to quiver gauge theory and supergroup gauge theory in three ways: the equivariant index formula, the contour integral formula, and the combinatorial formula. We then explore the geometri…
M-theoretic construction of N=2 gauge theories implies that the instanton partition function is expressed as the scalar product of coherent states (Whittaker states) in the Verma module of an appropriate two dimensional conformal field theory. We present the characterizing conditions for such states that give the partition function with fundamental hypermultiplets for SU(3) theory and SU(2) theory with a surface operator. We find the states are no longer the coherent states in the strict sense but we can characterize them in terms of a few annihilation operators of lower levels combined with t…
The prepotential of N=2* supersymmetric theories with unitary gauge groups in an Omega-background satisfies a modular anomaly equation that can be recursively solved order by order in an expansion for small mass. By requiring that S-duality acts on the prepotential as a Fourier transform we generalise this result to N=2* theories with gauge algebras of the D and E type and show that their prepotentials can be written in terms of quasi-modular forms of SL(2,Z). The results are checked against microscopic multi-instanton calculus based on localization for the A and D series and reproduce the kno…
We analyze the N=2 superconformal field theories that arise when a pair of D3-branes probe an F-theory singularity from the perspective of the associated vertex operator algebra. We identify these vertex operator algebras for all cases; we find that they have a completely uniform description, parameterized by the dual Coxeter number of the corresponding global symmetry group. We further present free field realizations for these algebras in the style of recent work by three of the authors. These realizations transparently reflect the algebraic structure of the Higgs branches of these theories. …
Various branches of matrix model partition function can be represented as intertwined products of universal elementary constituents: Gaussian partition functions Z_G and Kontsevich tau-functions Z_K. In physical terms, this decomposition is the matrix-model version of multi-instanton and multi-meron configurations in Yang-Mills theories. Technically, decomposition formulas are related to representation theory of algebras of Krichever-Novikov type on families of spectral curves with additional Seiberg-Witten structure. Representations of these algebras are encoded in terms of "the global partit…
For a semi-simple simply connected algebraic group G we introduce certain parabolic analogues of the Nekrasov partition function (introduced by Nekrasov and studied recently by Nekrasov-Okounkov and Nakajima-Yoshioka for G=SL(n)). These functions count (roughly speaking) principal G-bundles on the projective plane with a trivialization at infinity and with a parabolic structure at the horizontal line. When the above parabolic subgroup is a Borel subgroup we show that the corresponding partition function is basically equal to the Whittaker matrix coefficient in the universal Verma module over c…
Quantum toroidal algebras are obtained from quantum affine algebras by a further affinization, and, like the latter, can be used to construct integrable systems. These algebras also describe the symmetries of instanton partition functions for 5D $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. We consider here the gauge theories defined on an orbifold $S^1\times\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_p$ where the action of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is determined by two integer parameters $(ν_1,ν_2)$. The corresponding quantum toroidal algebra is introduced as a deformation of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathf…
We discuss the modular anomaly equation satisfied by the the prepotential of 4-dimensional N=2* theories and show that its validity is related to S-duality. The recursion relations that follow from the modular anomaly equation allow one to write the prepotential in terms of (quasi)-modular forms, thus resumming the instanton contributions. These results can be checked against the microscopic multi-instanton calculus in the case of classical algebras, but are valid also for the exceptional E6, E7, E8, F4 and G2 algebras, where direct computations are not available.
We further explore the correspondence between N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory with four flavors on epsilon-deformed backgrounds and conformal field theory, with an emphasis on the epsilon-expansion of the partition function natural from a topological string theory point of view. Solving an appropriate null vector decoupling equation in the semi-classical limit allows us to express the instanton partition function as a series in quasi-modular forms of the group Gamma(2), with the expected symmetry Weyl group of SO(8) semi-direct S_3. In the presence of an elementary surface operator, this…
We study superpotentials from worldsheet instantons in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications for vector bundles constructed from line bundle sums, monads and extensions. Within a certain class of manifolds and for certain second homology classes, we derive simple necessary conditions for a non-vanishing instanton superpotential. These show that non-vanishing instanton superpotentials are rare and require a specific pattern for the bundle construction. For the class of monad and extension bundles with this pattern, we derive a sufficient criterion for non-vanishing instanton superpotentials ba…
We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds that are less standard than the NC-torus or Moyal deformations of $\Rb^n$. They arise naturally from basic considerations of noncommutative differential topology and have non-trivial global features. The new examples include the instanton algebra and the NC-4-spheres $S^4_θ$. The noncommutative algebras $\Ac=C^{\ify} (S^{4}_θ)$ of functions on NC-spheres are solutions to the vanishing, $ {\rm ch}_j (e) = 0, j < 2 $, of the Chern character in the cyclic homology of $\Ac$ of an idempotent $e \in M_4 (\Ac), e^2 = e, e = e^*$. The universal noncommu…
Noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for abelian orbifold singularities can be studied via the enumeration of instanton solutions in a six-dimensional noncommutative N=2 gauge theory; this construction is based on the generalized McKay correspondence and identifies the instanton counting with the counting of framed representations of a quiver which is naturally associated to the geometry of the singularity. We extend these constructions to compute BPS partition functions for higher-rank refined and motivic noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants in the Coulomb branch in terms of gauge…
Yang-Mills theory with a symmetry algebra that is the semidirect product $\mathfrak{h}\ltimes\mathfrak{h}^*$ defined by the coadjoint action of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ on its dual $\mathfrak{h}^*$ is studied. The gauge group is the semidirect product ${\rm G}_{\mathfrak{h}}\ltimes{\mathfrak{h}^*}$, a noncompact group given by the coadjoint action on $\mathfrak{h}^*$ of the Lie group ${\rm G}_{\mathfrak{h}}$ of $\mathfrak{h}$. For $\mathfrak{h}$ simple, a method to construct the self-antiself dual instantons of the theory and their gauge non\-equivalent deformations is presented. Every ${\…
We discuss the construction of ADHM data for Yang-Mills instantons with the symmetries of the regular polytopes in four dimensions. We show that the case of the pentatope can be studied using a simple modification of the approach previously developed for platonic data. For the remaining polytopes, we describe a framework in which the building blocks of the ADHM data correspond to the edges in the extended Dynkin diagram that arises via the McKay correspondence. These building blocks are then assembled into ADHM data through the identification of pairs of commuting representations of the associ…
In this paper we study the correspondence between the $\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k}\oplus \hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{p}/\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k+p}$ coset conformal field theories and $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(n) gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. Namely we check the correspondence between the SU(2) Nekrasov partition function on $\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ and the conformal blocks of the $S_{3}$ parafermion algebra (in $S$ and $D$ modules). We find that they are equal up to the U(1)-factor as it was in all cases of AGT-like relations. Studying the structure of the instanton partition funct…
We describe the moduli space of SU(N) instantons in the presence of a general surface operator of type N=n_1+ ... +n_M in terms of the representations of the so-called chain-saw quiver, which allows us to write down the instanton partition function as a summation over the fixed point contributions labeled by Young diagrams. We find that the instanton partition function depends on the ordering of n_I which fixes a choice of the parabolic structure. This is in accord with the fact that the Verma module of the W-algebra also depends on the ordering of n_I. By explicit calculations, we check that …
We survey some of the AGT relations between N=2 gauge theories in four dimensions and geometric representations of symmetry algebras of two-dimensional conformal field theory on the equivariant cohomology of their instanton moduli spaces. We treat the cases of gauge theories on both flat space and ALE spaces in some detail, and with emphasis on the implications arising from embedding them into supersymmetric theories in six dimensions. Along the way we construct new toric noncommutative ALE spaces using the general theory of complex algebraic deformations of toric varieties, and indicate how t…
In this paper we study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of determinant line bundles on moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable sheaves on an algebraic surface X, which can be viewed as $K$-theoretic versions of the Donaldson invariants. In particular, if X is a smooth projective toric surface, we determine these invariants and their wallcrossing in terms of the K-theoretic version of the Nekrasov partition function (called 5-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle in the physics literature). Using the results of math.AG/0606180 we give an explicit generating funct…
I will explain my joint paper `Instantons moduli spaces and W-algebras' with A.Braverman, M.Finkelberg, arXiv:1406.2381. I will concentrate on the geometric part, that is a study of perverse sheaves on instanton moduli spaces. I place a particular emphasize on the hyperbolic restriction functor and stable envelop, which are our key tools, and appear also in other situations in geometric representation theory. These are lecture notes for a course in 2015 PCMI.
Following a recent paper by Alday and Tachikawa, we compute the instanton partition function in the presence of the surface operator by the localization formula on the moduli space. For SU(2) theories we find an exact agreement with CFT correlation functions with a degenerate operator insertion, which enables us to work out the decoupling limit of the superconformal theory with four flavors to asymptotically free theories at the level of differential equations for CFT correlation functions (irregular conformal blocks). We also argue that the K theory (or five dimensional) lift of these computa…

We study chiral gauge-invariant operators on moduli spaces of G instantons for any classical group G on A-type ALE spaces using Hilbert Series (HS). Moduli spaces of instantons on an ALE space can be realized as Higgs branches of certain quiver gauge theories which appear as world-volume theories on Dp branes in a Dp-D(p+4) system with the D(p+4) branes (with or without O(p+4) planes) wrapping the ALE space. We study in detail a list of quiver gauge theories which are related to G-instantons of arbitrary ranks and instanton numbers on a generic A_{n-1} ALE space and discuss the corresponding b…
We find a class of five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell type Lagrangians which contains the bosonic Lagrangians of vector multiplets as a subclass, and preserves some features of supersymmetry, namely the existence of multi-centered black hole solutions and of attractor equations. Solutions can be expressed in terms of harmonic functions through a set of algebraic equations. The geometry underlying these Lagrangians is characterized by the existence of a Hesse potential and generalizes the very special real geometry of vector multiplets. Our construction proceeds by first obtaining instanton solu…
Fermion propagator of the Schwinger Model is revisited from the point of view of its infrared behavior. The values of anomalous dimensions are found in arbitrary covariant gauge and in all contributing instanton sectors. In the case of a gauge invariant, but path dependent propagator, the exponential dependence, instead of power law one, is established for the special case when the path is a straight line. The leading behavior is almost identical in any sector, differing only by the slowly varying, algebraic prefactors. The other kind of the gauge invariant function, which is the amplitude of …
AGT conjecture connects Nekrasov instanton partition function of 4D quiver gauge theory with 2D Liouville conformal blocks. We re-investigate this connection using the central extension of spherical Hecke algebra in q-coordinate representation, q being the instanton expansion parameter. Based on AFLT basis together with interwiners we construct gauge conformal state and demonstrate its equivalence to the Liouville conformal state, with careful attention to the proper scaling behavior of the state. Using the colliding limit of regular states, we obtain the formal expression of irregular conform…
