Fermion propagator of the Schwinger Model is revisited from the point of view of its infrared behavior. The values of anomalous dimensions are found in arbitrary covariant gauge and in all contributing instanton sectors. In the case of a gauge invariant, but path dependent propagator, the exponential dependence, instead of power law one, is established for the special case when the path is a straight line. The leading behavior is almost identical in any sector, differing only by the slowly varying, algebraic prefactors. The other kind of the gauge invariant function, which is the amplitude of the dressed Dirac fermions, may be reduced, by the appropriate choice of the dressing, to the gauge variant one, if Landau gauge is imposed.
We present a simple proof that the imaginary part of the world-line path integral which computes the rate of Schwinger pair production of charged particles in a constant electric field, is given exactly by the semiclassical WKB limit.
We study the massive Schwinger model, quantum electrodynamics of massive, Dirac fermions, in 1+1 dimensions; with space compactified to a circle. In the limit that transitions to fermion--anti-fermion pairs can be neglected, we study the full ground state. We focus on the effect of instantons which mediate tunnelling transitions in the induced potential for the dynamical degree of freedom in the gauge field.
Using the exact path integral solution of the Schwinger model -- a model where instantons are present -- the Dyson-Schwinger equation is shown to hold by explicit computation. It turns out that the Dyson-Schwinger equation separately holds for every instanton sector. This is due to Theta-invariance of the Schwinger model.
We consider the quark-antiquark Green's function in the Schwinger Model with instanton contributions taken into account. Thanks to the fact that this function may analytically be found, we draw out singular terms, which arise due to the formation of the bound state in the theory -- the massive Schwinger boson. The principal term has a pole character. The residue in this pole contains contributions from various instanton sectors: $0,\pm 1, \pm 2$. It is shown, that the nonzero ones change the factorizability property. The formula for the residue is compared to the Bethe-Salpeter wave function f…
The Schwinger effect in the presence of instantons is considered in this paper. Using AdS/CFT correspondence in the near horizon limit of the D3+D($-1$)-brane background, we calculate the total potential of a quark-antiquark pair in an external electric field. It is shown that instantons tend to suppress the pair creation effect and increase the critical electric field above which the pairs are produced freely without any suppression. Interestingly, no other critical electric field, common for all confining field theories, is observed here at finite temperature. However, as expected we find su…
We consider in detail how the quantum-mechanical tunneling phenomenon occurs in a well-behaved octic potential. Our main tool will be the euclidean propagator just evaluated between two minima of the potential at issue. For such a purpose we resort to the standard semiclassical approximation which takes into account the fluctuations over the instantons, i.e. the finite-action solutions of the euclidean equation of motion. As regards the one-instanton approach, the functional determinant associated with the so-called stability equation is analyzed in terms of the asymptotic behaviour of the zer…
The known calculations of the fermion condensate $<\barψψ>$ and the correlator $<\barψψ(x) ~\barψψ(0)>$ have been interpreted in terms of {\em localized} instanton solutions minimizing the {\em effective} action. Their size is of order of massive photon Compton wavelength $μ^{-1}$. At high temperature, these instantons become quasistatic and present the 2-dimensional analog of the `walls' found recently in 4-dimensional gauge theories. In spite of the static nature of these solutions, they should not be interpreted as `thermal solitons' living in Minkowski space: the mass of these would-be sol…
The equation for the gluon propagator in the approach of Baker-Ball-Zachariasen is considered. The possibility of non-integer power infrared behaviour is studied, $D(q) \sim (q^2)^{-c}$, $q^2 \rightarrow 0$. It is shown that the characteristic equation for the exponent has no solutions at $-1\leq c\leq 3$. The approximations made to obtain the closed integral equation are analysed and the conclusion on the infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator $D(q) \sim 1/(q^2)^2$, $q^2 \rightarrow 0$ is made when the transverse part of the triple gluon vertex is taken into account.
In the space-dependent gauge, each mode of the Klein-Gordon equation in a strong electric field takes the form of a time-independent Schrödinger equation with a potential barrier. We propose that the single- and multi-instantons of quantum tunneling may be related with the single- and multi-pair production of bosons and the relative probability for the no-pair production is determined by the total tunneling probability via instantons. In the case of a uniform electric field, the instanton interpretation recovers exactly the well-known pair production rate for bosons and when the Pauli blocking…
We discuss a class of Little String Theories (LSTs) whose low energy descriptions are supersymmetric gauge theories on the $Ω$-background with gauge group $U(N)$ and matter in the adjoint representation. We show that the instanton partition function of these theories can be written in terms of Kronecker-Eisenstein series, which in a particular limit of the deformation parameters of the $Ω$-background organise themselves into Greens functions of free scalar fields on a torus. We provide a concrete identification between (differences of) such propagators and Nekrasov subfunctions. The latter are…
Schwinger pair production is analyzed in a BPST instanton background and in its SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ complex extension for complex scalar particles. A non-Abelian extension of the worldline instanton method is utilized, wherein Wong's equations in a coherent state picture adopted for SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ are solved in Euclidean spacetime. While pair production is not predicted in the BPST instanton, a complex extension of the BPST instanton, existing as parallel fields in Minkowski spacetime, is shown to decay via the Schwinger effect.
In Dyson-Schwinger studies of the Yang-Mills propagators the four-gluon interaction has been usually neglected due to the related technical difficulties with the associated two-loop terms and especially their renormalization. A possible scenario to renormalize these fully-dressed two-loop terms is presented. Preliminary results for the Landau gauge gluon propagator are shown. Implications for the gluon propagators in maximally Abelian gauge are discussed.
The gluon propagator plays a central role in determining the dynamics of QCD. In this work we demonstrate for BRST quantised QCD that the Dyson-Schwinger equation imposes significant analytic constraints on the structure of this propagator. In particular, we find that these constraints control the appearance of massless components in the gluon spectral density.
We solve the Dyson--Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in a model with singular infrared behavior for the gluon propagator. We require that the solutions, easily found in configuration space, be tempered distributions and thus have Fourier transforms. This severely limits the boundary conditions that the solutions may satisify. The sign of the dimensionful parameter that characterizes the model gluon propagator can be either positive or negative. If the sign is negative, we find a unique solution. It is singular at the origin in momentum space, falls off like $1/p^2$ as $p^2\rightarro…
By means of a formal expression of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective potential for quark propagator at finite temperature and finite quark chemical potential, we derive the real-time thermal Schwinger-Dyson equation for quark propagator in Landau gauge. Denote the inverse quark propagator by $A(p^2)\not{p}-B(p^2)$, we argue that, when temperature $T$ is less than the given infrared momentum cutoff $p_c$, $A(p^2)=1$ is a feasible approximation and can be assumed in discussions of chiral symmetry phase transition problem in QCD.
In hep-th/0310278, Blankleider and Kvinikhidze propose an alternate thermal propagator for the fermions in the light-front Schwinger model. We show that such a propagator does not describe correctly the thermal behavior of fermions in this theory and, as a consequence, the claims made in their paper are not correct.
We explicitly construct Green functions for a field in an arbitrary representation of gauge group propagating in noncommutative instanton backgrounds based on the ADHM construction. The propagators for spinor and vector fields can be constructed in terms of those for the scalar field in noncommutative instanton background. We show that the propagators in the adjoint representation are deformed by noncommutativity while those in the fundamental representation have exactly the same form as the commutative case.
We obtain in analytical form the dressed propagator of the Rarita-Schwinger field taking into account all spin components and discuss shortly its properties.
In the first part of this thesis a coupled truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) including the one for the gluon-propagator is solved self-consistently over the whole momentum range. In Landau gauge the truncation of the coupled set of DSEs for the ghost and gluon propagators is improved by the first full inclusion of the sunset diagram. A solution method which avoids all overlapping divergences is presented. In the Maximal Abelian gauge a truncation is developed with respectively one infrared and one ultraviolet leading diagram included. A first solution of the ghost equation is p…
We demonstrate how to compute real-time Green's functions for a class of finite temperature field theories from their AdS gravity duals. In particular, we reproduce the two-by-two Schwinger-Keldysh matrix propagator from a gravity calculation. Our methods should work also for computing higher point Lorentzian signature correlators. We elucidate the boundary condition subtleties which hampered previous efforts to build a Lorentzian-signature AdS/CFT correspondence. For two-point correlators, our construction is automatically equivalent to the previously formulated prescription for the retarded …
Gluon, ghost, and quark propagators are computed in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism. The full set of one-loop and two-loop contributions to the gap equations are evaluated for the first time. A new and efficient method for dealing with quadratic divergences is presented and a consistent renormalization method is proposed. We find that the two-loop contribution to the propagators is subleading, good fits to lattice data are possible, and reliable vertex models are important to obtaining desired ultraviolet, infrared, and gauge-symmetric behavior.
We present results for the propagators and the ghost-gluon vertex of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory obtained from Dyson-Schwinger equations. Solving these three quantities simultaneously constitutes a new step in truncating these equations. We also introduce a new model for the three-gluon vertex that is motivated by lattice results. It features a zero crossing which is confirmed a posteriori by a Dyson-Schwinger calculation. Within our setup we can reproduce lattice data very well. We establish that also for the ghost-gluon vertex a difference between decoupling and scaling solutions is prese…
The Herzog and Son prescription for computing real-time Green functions for finite temperature gauge theories from their gravity dual is generalized to fermions. These notes explain how such an extension involves properties of spinors in a curved, complexified space-time.
We present the results of an explicit numerical computation of a novel instanton in Georgi-Glashow SU(2) theory. The instanton is physically relevant as a mediator of Schwinger production of 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles from strong magnetic fields. In weak fields, the pair production rate has previously been computed using the worldline approximation, which breaks down in strong fields due to the effects of finite monopole size. Using lattice field theory we have overcome this limit, including finite monopole size effects to all orders. We demonstrate that a full consideration of the i…
We show that the application of a novel gauge invariant truncation scheme to the Schwinger-Dyson equations of QCD leads, in the Landau gauge, to an infrared finite gluon propagator and a divergent ghost propagator, in qualitative agreement with recent lattice data.
A method for solving Schwinger-Dyson equations for the Green function generating functional of non-Abelian gauge theory is proposed. The method is based on an approximation of Schwinger-Dyson equations by exactly soluble equations. For the SU(2) model the first step equations of the iteration scheme are solved which define a gauge field propagator. Apart from the usual perturbative solution, a non-perturbative solution is found which corresponds to the spontaneous symmetry breaking and obeys infrared finite behaviour of the propagator.
We study unquenched QED in four dimensions using renormalised Schwinger-Dyson equations and focus on the behaviour of the fermion and photon propagators. For this purpose we use an improved Kizilersu-Pennington (KP) vertex which respects gauge invariance, multiplicative renormalizability for the massless case, agrees with perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime and is free of kinematic singularities. We find that the KP vertex performs very well as expected specially in comparison with other vertex choices. We find that the Landau pole problem familiar from perturbative QED persists in…
We solve the Minkowski-space Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator in quantum electrodynamics (QED) with massive photons. Specifically, we work in the quenched approximation within the rainbow-ladder truncation. Loop-divergences are regularized by the Pauli-Villars regularization. With moderately strong fermion-photon coupling, we find that the analytic structure of the fermion propagator consists of an on-shell pole and branch-cuts located in the timelike region. Such structures are consistent with the direct solution of the fermion propagator as functions of the complex m…
Non-perturbative formalism of the generalized effective action is used for deriving the Schwinger-Dyson equations. In order to clear the domain of integration in the functional integral from gauge copies a restriction to the Gribov horizon due to Zwanziger is implemented. In this approach an asymptotic behaviour of gluon propagator and propagator of the Faddeev-Popov ghosts at small momenta is studied. Such a behaviour is obtained as a result of solving coupled Schwinger-Dyson equations in zeroth and first-order approximation. The qualitative agreement of these results with the ones obtained b…
In order to popularize the so called Schwinger's method we reconsider the Feynman propagator of two non-relativistic systems: a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field and a charged harmonic oscillator in a uniform magnetic field. Instead of solving the Heisenberg equations for the position and the canonical momentum operators, ${\bf R}$ and ${\bf P}$, we apply this method by solving the Heisenberg equations for the gauge invariant operators ${\bf R}$ and $\mathversion{bold}$π$ = {\bf P}-e{\bf A}$, the latter being the mechanical momentum operator. In our procedure we avoid fixing the gau…
The fermion propagator and the 4-fermion Green function in the massless QED2 are explicitly found with topological effects taken into account. The corrections due to instanton sectors k=+1,-1, contributing to the propagator, are shown to be just the homogenous terms admitted by the Dyson-Schwinger equation for S. In the case of the 4-fermion function also sectors k=+2,-2 are included into consideration. The quark condensates are then calculated and are shown to satisfy cluster property. The theta-dependence exhibited by the Green functions corresponds to and may be removed by performing certai…
Using the gauge-gravity duality, we study the holographic Schwinger effect by performing the potential analysis on the confining D3- and D4-brane background with D-instantons then evaluate the pair production/decay rate by taking account into a fundamental string and a single flavor brane respectively. The two confining backgrounds with D-instantons are obtained from the black D(-1)-D3 and D0-D4 solution with a double Wick rotation. The total potential and pair production/decay rate in the Schwinger effect are calculated numerically by examining the NG action of a fundamental string and the DB…
I shortly review the worldline instanton method for calculating Schwinger pair production rates in (i) one-loop QED (ii) multiloop QED and (iii) one-loop open string theory.
Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory within the first order formalism is considered with a view to deriving the propagator Dyson-Schwinger equations. The first order formalism is studied with special emphasis on the BRS invariance and it is found that there exists two forms of invariance - invariance under the standard BRS transform and under a second, non-standard transform. The field equations of motion and symmetries are derived explicitly and certain exact relations that simplify the formalism are presented. It is shown that the Ward-Takahashi identity arising from invariance under the non-stan…
We applied a recently published modified Fock-Schwinger (MFS) method to find the exact solution of the propagator equation for a charged vector boson in the presence of a constant magnetic field directly in the momentum space as a sum over Landau levels in arbitrary $ξ$-gauge. In contrast to the standard approaches for finding propagators, MFS method demonstrated several improvements in terms of computational complexity reduction and revealed simple internal structures in intermediate and final expressions, thus allowing to obtain new useful representations of the propagator.
With the introduction of a spectral representation, the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator is formulated in Minkowski space in QED. After imposing the on-shell renormalization conditions, analytic solutions for the fermion propagator spectral functions are obtained in four dimensions with a renormalizable version of the Gauge Technique anzatz for the fermion-photon vertex in the quenched approximation in the Landau gauge. Despite the limitations of this model, having an explicit solution provides a guiding example of the fermion propagator with the correct analytic struc…
We suggest a framework based on the rainbow approximation with effective parameters adjusted to lattice data. The analytic structure of the gluon and ghost propagators of QCD in Landau gauge is analyzed by means of numerical solutions of the coupled system of truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations. We find that the gluon and ghost dressing functions are singular in complex Euclidean space with singularities as isolated pairwise conjugated poles. These poles hamper solving numerically the Bethe-Salpeter equation for glueballs as bound states of two interacting dressed gluons. Nevertheless, we argu…
A detailed study of the semiclassical expansion of the world line path integral for a charged relativistic particle in a constant external electric field is presented. We show that the Schwinger formula for charged particle pair production is reproduced exactly by the semiclassical expansion around classical instanton solutions when the leading order of fluctuations is taken into account. We prove that all corrections to this leading approximation vanish and that the WKB approximation to the world line path integral is exact.
Perturbation series for the electron propagator in the Schwinger Model is summed up in a direct way by adding contributions coming from individual Feynman diagrams. The calculation shows the complete agreement between nonperturbative and perturbative approaches.
In principle, calculation of a full Green's function in any field theory requires knowledge of the infinite set of multi-point Green's functions, unless one can find some way of truncating the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equations. For the fermion and boson propagators in QED this requires an {\it ansatz} for the full three point vertex. Here we illustrate how the properties of gauge invariance, gauge covariance and multiplicative renormalizability impose severe constraints on this fermion-boson interaction, allowing a consistent truncation of the propagator equations. We demonstrate how the…
The low momentum behavior of the Landau gauge Gribov-Zwanziger action is investigated using the respective Dyson-Schwinger equations. Because of the mixing of the gluon and the auxiliary fields four scenarios can be distinguished for the infrared behavior. Two of them lead to inconsistencies and can be discarded. Another one corresponds to the case where the auxiliary fields behave exactly like the Faddeev-Popov ghosts and the same scaling relation as in standard Landau gauge, $\ka_A+2\ka_c=0$, is valid. Even the parameter $\ka$ is found to be the same, 0.595. The mixed propagators, which appe…
We study the influence of light quark loops on the Wigner phase by solving coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for quark propagator and gluon propagator. We take the gluon propagator in the Nambu phase from $N_f$ = 2 unquenched lattice QCD and choose various phenomenological models for the quark-gluon vertex. The gluon propagator in Winger phase is assumed to be different from that in the Nambu phase only due to the vacuum polarization of the quark loop. We obtain the Wigner solution of the coupled equations, compared with that from solving only the equation of the quark propagator. We discussed…
At strong-coupling and weak-field limit, the scalar Schwinger effect is studied by the field-theoretical method of worldline instantons for dynamic fields of single-pulse and sinusoidal types. By examining the Wilson loop along the closed instanton path, corrections to the results obtained from weak-coupling approximations are discovered. They show that this part of contribution for production rate becomes dominant as Keldysh parameter increases, it makes the consideration at strong coupling turn out to be indispensable for dynamic fields. Moreover a breaking of weak-field condition similar to…
Within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the axial gauge, we study the effect that non-perturbative glue has on the quark propagator. We show that Ward-Takahashi identities, combined with the requirement of matching perturbative QCD at high momentum transfer, guarantee the multiplicative renormalisability of the answer. Technically, the matching with perturbation theory is accomplished by the introduction of a transverse part to the quark-gluon vertex. We show that this transverse vertex is crucial for chiral symmetry breaking, and that massless solutions exist below a critical…
Employing methods introduced by Schwinger in quantum electrodynamics, we compute the propagator for a non-Abelian gauge field in a plane wave background field. In the long distance limit a mass-like term for the gauge field is induced by this interaction.
Schwinger used an analytic continuation of the effective action to correctly compute the particle production rate per unit volume for QED in a uniform electric field. However, if one simply evaluates the one loop expectation value of the current operator using his propagator, the result is zero! We analyze this curious fact from the context of a canonical formalism of operators and states. The explanation turns out to be that Schwinger's propagator is not actually the expectation value of the time-ordered product of field operators in the presence of a time-independent state, although it is of…
This work examines non-perturbative dynamics of a $2$-dimensional QFT by using discrete 't Hooft anomaly, semi-classics with circle compactification and bosonization. We focus on charge-$q$ $N$-flavor Schwinger model, and also Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We first apply the recent developments of discrete 't Hooft anomaly matching to theories on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and its compactification to $\mathbb{R} \times S^1_L$. We then compare the 't Hooft anomaly with dynamics of the models by explicitly constructing eigenstates and calculating physical quantities on the cylinder spacetime with periodic and f…
The formalism for Schwinger-Dyson equations of Wilson loops, as developed by Eguchi, Weingarten, and Foerster, is extended to include connected correlators. These should allow one to study propagators and interactions of glueball fields without having to handle gauge dependent fields such as gluons an ghosts. Some steps towards a solution are made.
Efficient computation methods are devised for the perturbative solution of Schwinger--Dyson equations for propagators. We show how a simple computation allows to obtain the dominant contribution in the sum of many parts of previous computations. This allows for an easy study of the asymptotic behavior of the perturbative series. In the cases of the four-dimensional supersymmetric Wess--Zumino model and the $ϕ_6^3$ complex scalar field, the singularities of the Borel transform for both positive and negative values of the parameter are obtained and compared.
Green functions for the scalar, spinor and vector fields in a plane wave geometry arising as a Penrose limit of $AdS\times S$ are obtained. The Schwinger-DeWitt technique directly gives the results in the plane wave background, which turns out to be WKB-exact. Therefore the structural similarity with flat space results is unveiled. In addition, based on the local character of the Penrose limit, it is claimed that for getting the correct propagators in the limit one can rely on the first terms of the direct geodesic contribution in the Schwinger-DeWitt expansion of the original propagators . Th…
The quark-gluon vertex in Landau gauge QCD is investigated in the Dyson-Schwinger approach. The aim is to obtain a fully self-consistent solution of the quark propagator and the quark-gluon vertex Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in the vacuum using the gluon propagator as input from other calculations. The truncation scheme used in an earlier study is systematically improved and the first decisive step towards a full solution is presented. First results for the quark propagator with a fully dressed quark-gluon vertex in a truncation that incorporates all twelve vertex tensor-structures are show…
We discuss renormalization of propagator of interacting Rarita--Schwinger field. Spin-3/2 contribution after renormalization takes usual resonance form. For non-leading spin-1/2 terms we found procedure, which guarantees absence of poles in energy plane. The obtained renormalized propagator has one free parameter and is a straight generalization of the famous free propagator of Moldauer and Case. Application of this propagator for production of $Δ^{++}(1232)$ in $π^{+}\particle{p}\to π^{+}\particle{p}$ leads to good description of total cross-section and to reasonable agreement with results of…
The exact Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for the fermion-antifermion bound state in the Schwinger Model is investigated. The dependence on the relative time and position in the center-of-mass frame in all contributing instanton sectors is analyzed. The same is accomplished for the relative energy and momentum variables. Several interesting properties of the amplitude are revealed. The explicit threshold structure is demonstrated.
In this article we use the Schwinger-Dyson equations to compute the nonperturbative modifications caused to the infrared finite gluon propagator (in the Landau gauge) by the inclusion of a small number of quark families. Our basic operating assumption is that the main bulk of the effect stems from the "one-loop dressed" quark loop contributing to the full gluon self-energy. This quark loop is then calculated, using as basic ingredients the full quark propagator and quark-gluon vertex; for the quark propagator we use the solution obtained from the quark gap equation, while for the vertex we emp…
The Hopf algebra of undecorated rooted trees has tamed the combinatorics of perturbative contributions, to anomalous dimensions in Yukawa theory and scalar $ϕ^3$ theory, from all nestings and chainings of a primitive self-energy subdivergence. Here we formulate the nonperturbative problems which these resummations approximate. For Yukawa theory, at spacetime dimension $d=4$, we obtain an integrodifferential Dyson-Schwinger equation and solve it parametrically in terms of the complementary error function. For the scalar theory, at $d=6$, the nonperturbative problem is more severe; we transform …
Having in mind applications to gravitational wave theory (in connection with the radiation reaction problem), stochastic semiclassical gravity (in connection with the regularization of the noise kernel) and quantum field theory in higher-dimensional curved spacetime (in connection with the Hadamard regularization of the stress-energy tensor), we improve the DeWitt-Schwinger and Hadamard representations of the Feynman propagator of a massive scalar field theory defined on an arbitrary gravitational background by deriving higher-order terms for the covariant Taylor series expansions of the geome…
