Algorithms are described that help with obtaining a classification of the semisimple subalgebras of a given semisimple Lie algebra, up to linear equivalence. The algorithms have been used to obtain classifications of the semisimple subalgebras of the simple Lie algebras of ranks <= 8. These have been made available as a database inside the SLA package of GAP4. The subalgebras in this database are explicitly given, as well as the inclusion relations among them.
We consider the problem of constructing semisimple subalgebras of real (semi-) simple Lie algebras. We develop computational methods that help to deal with this problem. Our methods boil down to solving a set of polynomial equations. In many cases the equations turn out to be sufficiently "pleasant" to be able to solve them. In particular this is the case for S-subalgebras.
Let H be a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this note we give a short proof of the fact that a Hopf subalgebra of H is a depth two subalgebra if and only if it is normal Hopf subalgebra.
A criterion for subcoalgebras to be invariant under the adjoint action is given generalizing Masuoka's criterion for normal Hopf subalgebras. At the level of characters, the image of the induction functor from a normal Hopf subalgebra is isomorphic to the image of the restriction functor.
In this note the notion of kernel of a representation of a semisimple Hopf algebra is introduced. Similar properties to the kernel of a group representation are proved in some special cases. In particular, every normal Hopf subalgebra of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is the kernel of a representation of H.
The semisimple subalgebras of the rank $2$ symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$ are well-known, and we recently classified its Levi decomposable subalgebras. In this article, we classify the solvable subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$, up to inner automorphism. This completes the classification of the subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$. More broadly speaking, in completing the classification of the subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$ we have completed the classification of the subalgebras of the rank $2$ semisimple Lie algebras.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a real semisimple Lie algebra with Iwasawa decomposition $\mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{a} \oplus \mathfrak{n}$. We show that, except for some explicit exceptional cases, every derivation of the nilpotent subalgebra $\mathfrak{n}$ that preserves its restricted root space decomposition is of the form $\text{ad}( W)$, where $W \in \mathfrak{m}\oplus .
An extension of $k$-algebras $B \subset A$ is said to have depth one if there exists a positive integer $n$ such that $ A$ is a direct summand of $ B^n$ in $_B\mtr{Mod}_B$. Depth one extensions of semisimple algebras are completely characterized in terms of their centers. For extensions of semisimple Hopf algebras our results are similar to those obtained for finite group algebra extensions in \cite{BKone}.
In one of his last papers, Boris Weisfeiler proved that if modular semisimple Lie algebra possesses a solvable maximal subalgebra which defines in it a long filtration, then associated graded algebra is isomorphic to one constructed from the Zassenhaus algebra tensored with the divided powers algebra. We completely determine such class of algebras, calculating in process low-dimensional cohomology groups of Zassenhaus algebra tensored with any associative commutative algebra.
A description of all normal Hopf subalgebras of a semisimple Drinfeld double is given. This is obtained by considering an analogue of Goursat's lemma concerning fusion subcategories of Deligne products of two fusion categories. As an application we show that the Drinfeld double of any abelian extension is also an abelian extension.
We study maximal subalgebras of an arbitrary finite dimensional algebra over a field, and obtain full classification/description results of such algebras. This is done by first obtaining a complete classification in the semisimple case, and then lifting to non-semisimple algebras. The results are sharpest in the case of algebraically closed fields, and take special forms for algebras presented by quivers with relations. We also relate representation theoretic properties of the algebra and its maximal and other subalgebras, and provide a series of embeddings between quivers, incidence algebras …
The notion of double coset for semisimple finite dimensional Hopf algebras is introduced. This is done by considering an equivalence relation on the set of irreducible characters of the dual Hopf algebra. As an application formulae for the restriction of the irreducible characters to normal Hopf subalgebras are given.
We prove that a depth two Hopf subalgebra K of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is normal (where the ground field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero). This means on the one hand that a Hopf subalgebra is normal when inducing (then restricting) modules several times as opposed to one time creates no new simple constituents. This point of view was taken in the paper http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0409346 which established a normality result in case H and K are finite group algebras. On the other hand this means that K is normal in H when H | K is a Galois extension with respect to action o…
We study {\em disemisimple} Lie algebras, i.e., Lie algebras which can be written as a vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is disemisimple if and only if its solvable radical coincides with its nilradical and is a prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-module for a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{s}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. We use the classification of prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-modules for simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{s}$ given by Vinberg to show that the solvable radical of a disemisimple Lie algebra with simple Levi subalgebra is abelian. We extend th…
We develop a theory of right group-like projections in Hopf algebras linking them with the theory of left coideal subalgebras with two sided counital integrals. Every right group-like projection is associated with a left coideal subalgebra, maximal among the ones containing the given group-like projection as an integral, and we show that that subalgebra is finite dimensional. We observe that in a semisimple Hopf algebra $H$ every left coideal subalgebra has an integral and we prove a 1-1 correspondence between right group-like projections and left coideal subalgebras of $H$. We provide a numbe…
S. Montgomery and S. Witherspoon proved that upper and lower semisolvable, semisimple, finite dimensional Hopf algebras are of Froebenius type when their dimensions are not divisible by the characteristic of the base field. In this note we show that a finite dimensional, semisimple, lower solvable Hopf algebra is always of Froebenius type, in arbitrary characteristic.
A general Mackey type decomposition for representations of semisimple Hopf algebras is investigated. We show that such a decomposition occurs in the case that the module is induced from an arbitrary Hopf subalgebra and it is restricted back to a group subalgebra. Some other examples when such a decomposition occurs are also constructed. They arise from gradings on the category of corepresentations of a semisimple Hopf algebra and provide new examples of Green functors in the literature.
We give a Clifford correspondence for an algebra A over an algebraically closed field, that is an algorithm for constructing some finite-dimensional simple A-modules from simple modules for a subalgebra and endomorphism algebras. This applies to all finite-dimensional simple A-modules in the case that A is finite-dimensional and semisimple with a given semisimple subalgebra. We discuss connections between our work and earlier results, with a view towards applications particularly to finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebras.
In this thesis we consider the maximal subalgebras of the exceptional Lie algebras in algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. This begins with a quick recap of the article by Herpel and Stewart which considered the Cartan type maximal subalgebras in the exceptional Lie algebras for good characteristic, and then the article by Premet considering non-semisimple maximal subalgebras in good characteristic. For $p=5$ we give an example of what appears to be a new maximal subalgebra in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_8$. We show that this maximal subalgebra is isomorphic to th…
Masuoka proved (2009) that a finite-dimensional irreducible Hopf algebra $H$ in positive characteristic is semisimple if and only if it is commutative semisimple if and only if the Hopf subalgebra generated by all primitives is semisimple. In this paper, we give another proof of this result by using Hochschild cohomology of coalgebras.
This work classifies three-dimensional simple evolution algebras over arbitrary fields. For this purpose, we use tools such as the associated directed graph, the moduli set, inductive limit group, Zariski topology and the dimension of the diagonal subspace. Explicitly, in the three-dimensional case, we construct some models $_i\mathbf{III}_{λ_1,\ldots,λ_n}^{p,q}$ of such algebras with $1\le i\le 4$, $λ_i\in\mathbb{K}^\times$, $p,q\in\mathbb{N}$, such that any algebra is isomorphic to one (and only one) of the given in the models and we further investigate the isomorphic question within each on…
Results about the following classes of finite-dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero are presented: anisotropic (i.e., Lie algebras for which each adjoint operator is semisimple), regular (i.e., Lie algebras in which each nonzero element is regular in the sense of Bourbaki), minimal nonabelian (i.e., nonabelian Lie algebras all whose proper subalgebras are abelian), and algebras of depth 2 (i.e., Lie algebras all whose proper subalgebras are abelian or minimal nonabelian).
We revisit a class of examples described in the original paper on biproducts, expand the class, and provide a detailed analysis of the coalgebra and algebra structures of many of these examples. Connections with the semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension a power of two determined by Kashina are examined. The finite-dimensional non-trivial semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebras we construct are shown to be lower cosolvable. Some of these have one proper normal Hopf subalgebra and are not lower solvable.
From the Levi's Theorem it is known that every finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero is decomposed into semidirect sum of solvable radical and semisimple subalgebra. Moreover, semisimple part is the direct sum of simple ideals. In \cite{Bar} the Levi's theorem is extended to the case of Leibniz algebras. In the present paper we investigate the semisimple Leibniz algebras and we show that the splitting theorem for semisimple Leibniz algebras is not true. Moreover, we consider some special classes of the semisimple Leibniz algebras and find a condition under which th…
A condition on an affine central subalgebra $Z$ of a noetherian algebra $A$ of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, which we call here \emph{unruffledness}, is shown to be equivalent in some circumstances to the flatness of $A$ as a $Z$-module. Unruffledness was studied by Borho and Joseph in work on enveloping algebras of complex semisimple Lie algebras, and we discuss applications of our result to enveloping algebras, as well as beginning the study of this condition for more general algebras.
Let $H$ be a semisimple Hopf algebra, and let $R$ be a noetherian left $H$-module algebra. If $R/R^H$ is a right $H^*$-dense Galois extension, then the invariant subalgebra $R^H$ will inherit the AS-Cohen-Macaulay property from $R$ under some mild conditions, and $R$, when viewed as a right $R^H$-module, is a Cohen-Macaulay module. In particular, we show that if $R$ is a noetherian complete semilocal algebra which is AS-regular of global dimension 2 and $H=\operatorname{\bf k} G$ for some finite subgroup $G\subseteq Aut(R)$, then all the indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay module of $R^H$ is a direc…
We show that the isomorphism class of a two-step solvable Lie poset subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra is determined by its dimension. We further establish that all such algebras are absolutely rigid.
In this paper we determine the precise extent to which the classical sl_2-theory of complex semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebras due to Jacobson--Morozov and Kostant can be extended to positive characteristic. This builds on work of Pommerening and improves significantly upon previous attempts due to Springer--Steinberg and Carter/Spaltenstein. Our main advance arises by investigating quite fully the extent to which subalgebras of the Lie algebras of semisimple algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields k are G-completely reducible, a notion essentially due to Serre. For example i…
It is shown that the subalgebra of invariants of a free associative algebra of finite rank under a linear action of a semisimple Hopf algebra has a rational Hilbert series with respect to the usual degree function, whenever the ground field has zero characteristic.
We describe how certain cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras occur as endomorphism rings of projective modules in a parabolic version of BGG category O of type $D$. Furthermore we study a family of subalgebras of these endomorphism rings which exhibit similar behaviour to the family of Brauer algebras even when they are not semisimple. The translation functors on this parabolic category O are studied and proven to yield a categorification of a coideal subalgebra of the general linear Lie algebra. Finally this is put into the context of categorifying skew Howe duality for these subalgebras.
We study graded right coideal subalgebras of Nichols algebras of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules. Assuming that the Yetter-Drinfeld module admits all reflections and the Nichols algebra is decomposable, we construct an injective order preserving and order reflecting map between morphisms of the Weyl groupoid and graded right coideal subalgebras of the Nichols algebra. Here morphisms are ordered with respect to right Duflo order and right coideal subalgebras are ordered with respect to inclusion. If the Weyl groupoid is finite, then we prove that the Nichols algebra is decomposable and the a…
A solvable Lie algebra L has the property that its nilradical N contains its own centraliser. This is interesting because gives a representation of L as a subalgebra of the derivation algebra of its nilradical with kernel equal to the centre of N. Here we consider several possible generalisations of the nilradical for which this property holds in any Lie algebra. Our main result states that for every Lie algebra L, L/Z(N), where Z(N) is the centre of the nilradical of L, is isomorphic to a subalgebra of Der(N?*) where N*? is an ideal of L such that N?*/N is the socle of a semisimple Lie algebr…
We study rigidity questions for pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$ admitting a post-Lie algebra structure. We show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple and $\mathfrak{n}$ is arbitrary, then we have rigidity in the sense that $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$ must be isomorphic. The proof uses a result on the decomposition of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}_1\dotplus \mathfrak{s}_2$ as the direct vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that $\mathfrak{g}$ must be semisimple and hence isomorphic to the direct Lie algebra sum $\mathfrak{g}\cong \mathfrak{…
We introduce the notion of the \textit{principal element} of a Frobenius Lie algebra $\f$. The principal element corresponds to a choice of $F\in \f^*$ such that $F[-,-]$ non-degenerate. In many natural instances, the principal element is shown to be semisimple, and when associated to $\sl_n$, its eigenvalues are integers and are independent of $F$. For certain ``small'' functionals $F$, a simple construction is given which readily yields the principal element. When applied to the first maximal parabolic subalgebra of $\sl_n$, the principal element coincides with semisimple element of the prin…
A parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak{p}$ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is called a parabolic subalgebra of abelian type if its nilpotent radical is abelian. In this paper, we provide a complete characterization of the parameters for scalar generalized Verma modules attached to parabolic subalgebras of abelian type such that the modules are reducible. The proofs use Jantzen's simplicity criterion, as well as the Enright-Howe-Wallach classification of unitary highest weight modules.
Study of the quotient module of a finite-dimensional Hopf subalgebra pair in order to compute its depth yields a relative Maschke Theorem, in which semisimple extension is characterized as being separable, and is therefore an ordinary Frobenius extension. We study the core Hopf ideal of a Hopf subalgebra, noting that the length of the annihilator chain of tensor powers of the quotient module is linearly related to the depth, if the Hopf algebra is semisimple. A tensor categorical definition of depth is introduced, and a summary from this new point of view of previous results are included. It i…
We describe all irreducible conformal subalgebras of Cend_N. The classification of simple and semisimple associative conformal algebras with finite faithful representation follows from this description.
As part of his classification of regular semisimple subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras, Dynkin introduced the notion of a $π$-system. This is a subset of the roots such that pairwise differences of its elements are not roots. These arise as simple systems of regular semisimple subalgebras. Morita and Naito generalized this notion to all symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. In this work, we systematically develop the theory of $π$-systems of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras and establish their fundamental properties. We study the orbits of the Weyl group on $π$-systems, and completely determin…
In this paper we generalize the notion of the Taylor spectrum to modules over an arbitrary Lie algebra and study it for finite-dimensional modules. We show that the spectrum can be described as the set of simple submodules in case of nilpotent and semisimple Lie algebras. We also show that this result does not hold for solvable Lie algebras and obtain a precise description of the spectrum in case of Borel subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras.
Given a a Hopf algebra $H$, its left coideal subalgebra $A$ and a non-zero multiplicative functional $μ$ on $A$, we define the space of left $μ$-integrals $L^A_μ\subset A$. We observe that $\dim L^A_μ=1$ if $A$ is a Frobenius algebra and we conclude this equality for finite dimensional left coideal subalgebras of a weakly finite Hopf algebra. In general we prove that if $\dim L^A_μ>0$ then $\dim A <\infty$. Given a group-like element $g\in H$ we define the space $L^g_{ A}\subset A'$ of $g$-cointegrals on $ A$ and linking this concept with the theory of $μ$-integrals we observe that: - every se…
A finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over a field $F$ of characteristic zero is called elementary if each of its subalgebras has trivial Frattini ideal; it is an $A$-algebra if every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian. This paper is a continuation of the study of these algebras initiated by the authors in `Elementary Lie Algebras and Lie A-algebras', J. Algebra 312 (2007), 891--901. If we denote by $\mathcal{A}$, $\mathcal{G}$, $\mathcal{E}$, $\mathcal{L}$, $Φ$ the classes of $A$-algebras, almost algebraic algebras, $E$-algebras, elementary algebras and $ϕ$-free algebras respectively, then it is …
For each nonzero $h\in \mathbb{F}[x]$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field, let $\mathsf{A}_h$ be the unital associative algebra generated by elements $x,y$, satisfying the relation $yx-xy = h$. This gives a parametric family of subalgebras of the Weyl algebra $\mathsf{A}_1$, containing many well-known algebras which have previously been studied independently. In this paper, we give a full description the Hochschild cohomology $\mathsf{HH}^\bullet(\mathsf{A}_h)$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic. In case $\mathbb{F}$ has positive characteristic, the center of $\mathsf{A}_h$ is nontrivial and …
We compute low-degree cohomology of current Lie algebras extended over the 3-dimensional simple algebra, compute deformations of related semisimple Lie algebras, and apply these results to classification of simple Lie algebras of absolute toral rank 2 and having a Cartan subalgebra of toral rank one. Everything is in characteristic 2.
Let $G$ be a group, $F$ a field, and $A$ a finite-dimensional central simple algebra over $F$ on which $G$ acts by $F$-algebra automorphisms. We study the ideals and subalgebras of $A$ which are preserved by the group action. Let $V$ be the unique simple module of $A$. We show that $V$ is a projective representation of $G$ and $A\cong\text{End}_D(V)$ makes $V$ into a projective representation. We then prove that there is a natural one-to-one correspondence between $G$-invariant $D$-submodules of $V$ and invariant left (and right) ideals of $A$. Under the assumption that $V$ is irreducible, we …
