Let (g,[p]) be a finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra, defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. The scheme of tori of maximal dimension of g gives rise to a finite group S(g) that coincides with the Weyl group of g in case g is a Lie algebra of classical type. In this paper, we compute the group S(g) for Lie algebras of Cartan type and provide applications concerning weight space decompositions, the existence of generic tori and polynomial invariants.
We use Dunkl's operators to give an elementary proof of the surjectivity in the Chevalley's restriction theorem. In the second part of this article we describe the image of the invariants by the restriction map in the case of Takiff algebras. We extend this result to Takiff symmetric spaces.
Let $X$ be a locally symmetric space defined by a simple Chevalley group $G$ and a congruence subgroup of $G(\mathbb Q)$. In this generality, the Weyl law for $X$ was proved by Lindenstrauss--Venkatesh. In the case where $G$ is simply connected, we sharpen their result by giving a power saving estimate for the remainder term.
An algebraic group is called semi-reductive if it is a semi-direct product of a reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical. Such a semi-reductive algebraic group naturally arises and also plays a key role in the study of modular representations of non-classical finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in positive characteristic, and some other cases. Let $G$ ba a connected semi-reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. It turns out that $G$ has many same properties as reductive groups, such as the Bruhat decomposition. In this note, we…
We generalize Chevalley's theorem about restriction of \mathfrak{g}-invariant polynomial functions \mathfrak{g}->C to W-invariant functions on the Cartan \mathfrak{h}->C. We consider the case when \mathfrak{g} is replaced by a quantum group and the target space of the polynomial maps is replaced by a finite dimensional representation V of this quantum group. We prove that the restriction map Res:(O_q(G)\otimes V)^{U_q(\mathfrak{g})}-> O(H)\otimes V is injective and describe the image.
Let $G_2(q)$ be the Chevalley group of type $G_2$ defined over a finite field with q=p^n elements, where p is a prime number and $n$ is a positive integer. In this paper, we determine when the restriction of an absolutely irreducible representation of $G$ in characteristic other than p to a maximal subgroup of $G_2(q)$ is still irreducible. Similar results are obtained for $^2B_2(q)$ and $^2G_2(q)$.
Let $g$ be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with adjoint group $G$. Suppose that $σ$ is an involutive automorphism of $g$. Then $σ$ induces uniquely an involution of $G$ also denoted by $σ$, let $K=G^σ$ be a subgroup of $σ$-fixed points. Consider a direct decomposition $g=k+p$ of $g$ into eigenspaces for $σ$. Then $p$ is a $K$-module. Denote by $a\subset p$ any maximal abelian ad-diagonalizable subalgebra. Consider the ``baby Weyl group'' $W=N_K(a)/Z_K(a)$. Let $ψ: C[p]^K\to C[a]^W$ be a restriction map of algebras of invariants. Then the famous Chevalley restriction theorem states that $ψ$ is…
If $(G,V)$ is a polar representation with Cartan subspace $\mathfrak c$ and Weyl group $W$, it is shown that there is a natural morphism of Poisson schemes $\mathfrak c \oplus {\mathfrak c}^*/W \to V\oplus V^*/\!\!/\!\!/ G$. This morphism is conjectured to be an isomorphism of the underlying reduced varieties if $(G,V)$ is visible. The conjecture is proved for visible stable locally free polar representations and certain further examples.
Let $G$ be the symplectic group, $Φ=C_n$ its root system, $B\subset G$ its standard Borel subgroup, $W$ the Weyl group of $Φ$. To each involution $σ\in W$ one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ$ contained in the dual space of the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of $B$. We prove that $Ω_σ$ is contained in the Zariski closure of $Ω_τ$ if and only of $σ\leqτ$ with respect to the Bruhat--Chevalley order. We also prove that $\dimΩ_σ$ is equal to $l(σ)$, the length of $σ$ in $W$.
Let (g,k) be a reductive symmetric superpair of even type, i.e. so that there exists an even Cartan subspace a in p. The restriction map S(p^*)^k->S(a^*)^W where W=W(g_0:a) is the Weyl group, is injective. We determine its image explicitly. In particular, our theorem applies to the case of a symmetric superpair of group type, i.e. (k+k,k) with the flip involution where k is a classical Lie superalgebra with a non-degenerate invariant even form (equivalently, a finite-dimensional contragredient Lie superalgebra). Thus, we obtain a new proof of the generalisation of Chevalley's restriction theor…
We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to …
In this thesis, we investigate the asymptotics of random partitions chosen according to probability measures coming from the representation theory of the symmetric groups $S_n$ and of the finite Chevalley groups $GL(n,F_q)$ and $Sp(2n,F_q)$. More precisely, we prove laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the $q$-Plancherel measures of type A and B, the Schur-Weyl measures and the Gelfand measures. Using the RSK algorithm, it also gives results on longest increasing subsequences in random words. We develop a technique of moments (and cumulants) for random partitions, thereby using…
We prove the Chevalley restriction theorem for the commuting scheme of symplectic Lie algebras. The key step is the construction of the inverse map of the Chevalley restriction map called the spectral data map. Along the way, we establish a certain multiplicative property of the Pfaffian which is of independent interest.
In a previous paper I have defined a new basis for the representation ring of a Weyl group. In this paper we show that the new basis is related to the standard basis by an upper triangular unipotent matrix. We also give a new parametrization of representations in a fixed family by certain pairs of subgroups of a finite group attached to the family. We outline an extension to the case of unipotent representations of a finite Chevalley group.
We prove a version of the Chevalley Restriction Theorem for the action of a real reductive group G on a topological space X which locally embeds into a holomorphic representation. Assuming that there exists an appropriate quotient X//G for the G-action, we introduce a stratification which is defined with respect to orbit types of closed orbits. Our main result is a description of the quotient X//G in terms of quotients by normalizer subgroups associated to the stratification.
Let G be a universal Chevalley group over an algebraically closed field and U^- be the subalgebra of Dist(G) generated by all divided powers X_{α,m} with α<0. We conjecture an algorithm to determine if Fe^+_ω\ne0, where F\in\U^-, ωis a dominant weight and e^+_ωis a highest weight vector of the Weyl module Δ(ω). This algorithm does not use bases of Δ(ω) and is similar to the algorithm for irreducible modules that involves stepwise raising the vector under investigation. For an arbitrary G, this conjecture is proved in one direction and for G of type A in both.
Polynomial invariants are fundamental objects in analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces. Invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces are described by Weyl group invariant polynomial. In this article we give a simple criterion that ensure that the restriction of invariant polynomials to subspaces is surjective. In another paper we will apply our criterion to problems in Fourier analysis on projective/injective limits, specifically to theorems of Paley--Wiener type.
Let F be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. Suppose that SL_{n-1}(F) is naturally embedded into SL_n(F) (either in the top left corner or in the bottom right corner). We prove that certain Weyl modules over SL_{n-1}(F) can be embedded into the restriction L(ω)\downarrow_{SL_{n-1}(F)}, where L(ω) is a simple SL_n(F)-module. This allows us to construct new primitive vectors in L(ω)\downarrow_{\SL_{n-1}(F)} from any primitive vectors in the corresponding Weyl modules. Some examples are given to show that this result actually works.
It is shown that there is an order isomorphism $ϕ'$ from the poset $V$ of $B\times B$-orbits on the wonderful compactification of a semi-simple adjoint group $G$ with Weyl group $W$ to an interval in reverse Chevalley-Bruhat order on a non-canonically associated Coxeter group $\hat{W}$ (in general neither finite nor affine). Moreover, $ϕ'$ preserves the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Springer's (partly conjectural) construction of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the analogues of $V$ for general Coxeter groups $W$ is completed by reducing it by a similar order isomorphism to known r…
We study the moduli stack of degree $0$ semistable $G$-bundles on an irreducible curve $E$ of arithmetic genus $1$, where $G$ is a connected reductive group. Our main result describes a partition of this stack indexed by a certain family of connected reductive subgroups $H$ of $G$ (the $E$-pseudo-Levi subgroups), where each stratum is computed in terms of $H$-bundles together with the action of the relative Weyl group. We show that this result is equivalent to a Jordan--Chevalley theorem for such bundles equipped with a framing at a fixed basepoint. In the case where $E$ has a single cusp (res…
Chevalley's theorem states that for any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra G (1) the restriction homomorphism of the algebra of polynomials on G onto the Cartan subalgebra H induces an isomorphism between the algebra of G-invariant polynomials on G with the algebra of W-invariant polynomals on H, where W is the Weyl group of G, (2) each G-invariant polynomial is a linear combination of the powers of traces tr r(x), where r is a finite dimensional representation of G. None of these facts is necessarily true for simple Lie superalgebras. We reformulate Chevalley's theorem so as to embrace Lie…
Let $B$ be the group of invertible upper-triangular complex $n\times n$ matrices, $\mathfrak{u}$ the space of upper-triangular complex matrices with zeroes on the diagonal and $\mathfrak{u}^*$ its dual space. The group $B$ acts on $\mathfrak{u}^*$ by $(g.f)(x)=f(gxg^{-1})$, $g\in B$, $f\in\mathfrak{u}^*$, $x\in\mathfrak{u}$. To each involution $σ$ in $S_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ letters, one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ\in\mathfrak{u}^*$. We present a combinatorial description of the partial order on the set of involutions induced by the orbit closures. The answer is given in terms of ro…
We show that induction and restriction functors for inclusions of nilCoxeter algebras provide a categorical realization of the algebra of polynomial differential operators in one variable.
Premet has conjectured that the nilpotent variety of any finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra is an irreducible variety. In this paper, we prove this conjecture in the case of Hamiltonian Lie algebra. and show that its nilpotent variety is normal and a complete intersection. In addition, we generalize the Chevalley Restriction theorem to Hamiltonian Lie algebra. Accordingly, we give the generators of the invariant polynomial ring.
In this paper, we study local graded Weyl modules and Demazure modules for twisted hypercurrent algebras. We prove that local graded Weyl modules for a twisted hypercurrent algebra are isomorphic to the corresponding level 1 Demazure modules, and moreover, that they are restrictions of corresponding local graded Weyl modules for the untwisted hypercurrent algebra.
We shall construct the quantized q-analogues of the birational Weyl group actions arising from nilpotent Poisson algebras, which are conceptual generalizations, proposed by Noumi and Yamada, of the Bäcklund transformations for Painlevé equations. Consider a quotient Ore domain of the lower nilpotent part of a quantized universal enveloping algebra of arbitrary symmetrizable Kac-Moody type. Then non-integral powers of the image of the Chevalley generators generate the quantized q-analogue of the birational Weyl group action. Using the same method, we shall reconstruct the quantized Bäcklund tra…
Let H be a Hecke algebra arising as an endomorphism algebra of the representation of a Chevalley group G over F_q induced by a unipotent cuspidal representation of a Levi quotient L of a parabolic subgroup. We assume that L is not a torus. In this paper we outline a geometric interpretation of the coefficients of the canonical basis of H in terms of perverse sheaves. We illustrate this in detail in the case where the Weyl group of G is of type B_4 and that of L is of type B_2.
We investigate the category of finite-dimensional representations of twisted hyper loop algebras, i.e., the hyperalgebras associated to twisted loop algebras over finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras. The main results are the classification of the irreducible modules, the definition of the universal highest-weight modules, called the Weyl modules, and, under a certain mild restriction on the characteristic of the ground field, a proof that the simple modules and the Weyl modules for the twisted hyper loop algebras are isomorphic to appropriate simple and Weyl modules for the non-twisted hype…
Let $k$ be the algebraic closure of a finite field, $G$ a Chevalley group over $k$, $U$ the maximal unipotent subgroup of $G$. To each orthogonal subset $D$ of the root system of the group $G$ and each set $ξ$ of $|D|$ non-zero scalars from $k$ one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the group $U$. We prove that the dimension of such an orbit does not depend on $ξ$. We also give an upper bound of the dimension in terms of the Weyl group.
Character polynomials are used to study the restriction of a polynomial representation of a general linear group to its subgroup of permutation matrices. A simple formula is obtained for computing inner products of class functions given by character polynomials. Character polynomials for symmetric and alternating tensors are computed using generating functions with Eulerian factorizations. These are used to compute character polynomials for Weyl modules, which exhibit a duality. By taking inner products of character polynomials for Weyl modules and character polynomials for Specht modules, sta…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geqslant 0$ and let $W$ be a finite-dimensional $K$-space of dimension greater than or equal to $5.$ In this paper, we give the structure of certain Weyl modules for $G=\mbox{Spin}(W)$ in the case where $p\neq 2,$ as well as the dimension of the corresponding irreducible, finite-dimensional, rational $KG$-modules. In addition, we determine the composition factors of the restriction of certain irreducible, finite-dimensional, rational $K\mbox{SL}(W)$-modules to $\mbox{SO}(W).$
We show that two Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf with arbitrary coefficients, one defined by Fourier transform and one by restriction, agree up to a twist by the sign character. This generalizes a familiar result from the setting of l-adic cohomology, making it applicable to modular representation theory. We use the Weyl group actions to define a Springer correspondence in this generality, and identify the zero weight spaces of small representations in terms of this Springer correspondence.
Let A be a character sheaf on a reductive connected group G over an algebraically closed field. Assuming that the characteristic is not bad, we show that for certain conjugacy classes D in G the restriction of A to D is a local system up to shift; we also give a parametrization of unipotent cuspidal character sheaves on G in terms of restrictions to conjugacy classes. Without restriction on characteristic we define canonical bijections from the set of unipotent character sheaves on G (and from the set of unipotent representations of the corresponding split reductive group over a finite field) …
A basic exact sequence by Harish-Chandra related to the invariant differential operators on a Riemannian symmetric space G/K is generalized for each K-type in a certain class which we call `single-petaled'. The argument also includes a further generalization of Broer's generalization of the Chevalley restriction theorem.
Global Weyl modules for generalized loop algebras $\lie g\tensor A$, where $\lie g$ is a simple finite dimensional Lie algebra and A is a commutative associative algebra were defined, for any dominant integral weight $λ$, by generators and relations. They are expected to play the role similar to that of Verma modules in the study of categories of representations of these algebras. One of the fundamental properties of Verma modules is that the space of morphisms between two Verma modules is either zero or one--dimensional and also that any non--zero morphism is injective. The aim of this paper …
For a simple complex Lie algebra of finite rank and classical type, we fix a triangular decomposition and consider the simple Levi subalgebras associated to closed subsets of roots. We study the restriction of global and local Weyl modules of current algebras to this Levi subalgebra. We identify necessary and sufficient conditions on a pair of a Levi subalgebra and a dominant integral weight, such that the restricted module is a global (resp. a local) Weyl module.
We build resolutions for general twisted tensor products of algebras. These bimodule and module resolutions unify many constructions in the literature and are suitable for computing Hochschild (co)homology and more generally Ext and Tor for (bi)modules. We analyze in detail the case of Ore extensions, consequently obtaining Chevalley-Eilenberg resolutions for universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras (defining the cohomology of Lie groups and Lie algebras). Other examples include semidirect products, crossed products, Weyl algebras, Sridharan enveloping algebras, and Koszul pairs.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a reductive group defined over $F$ which splits over a tamely ramified extension and set $G=\mathbb{G}(F)$. We assume that $p$ does not divide the order of the Weyl group of $\mathbb{G}$. Given a closed connected $F$-subgroup $\mathbb{H}$ that contains the derived subgroup of $\mathbb{G}$, we study the restriction to $H$ of an irreducible supercuspidal representation $π=π_G(Ψ)$ of $G$, where $Ψ$ is a $G$-datum as per the J.K. Yu Construction. We provide a full description of $π|_H$ into irreducible com…
In a previous paper, the authors studied the radical filtration of a Weyl module $Δ_ζ(λ)$ for quantum enveloping algebras $U_ζ(\overset\circ{\mathfrak g})$ associated to a finite dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra $\overset\circ{\mathfrak g}$. There $ζ^2=\sqrt[e]{1}$ and $λ$ was, initially, required to be $e$-regular. Some additional restrictions on $e$ were required---e.g., $e>h$, the Coxeter number, and $e$ odd. Translation to a facet gave an explicit semisimple series for all quantum Weyl modules with singular, as well as regular, weights. That is, the sections of the filtration are…
We construct the polynomial induction functor, which is the right adjoint to the restriction functor from the category of polynomial representations of a general linear group to the category of representations of its Weyl group. This construction leads to a representation-theoretic proof of Littlewood's plethystic formula for the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group in such a restriction. The unimodality of certain bipartite partition functions follows.
We use power sums plethysm operators to introduce H functions which interpolate between the Weyl characters and the Hall-Littlewood functions Q' corresponding to classical Lie groups. The coefficients of these functions on the basis of Weyl characters are parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and thus, are nonnegative. We prove that they can be regarded as quantizations of branching coefficients obtained by restriction to certain Levi subgroups. The H functions associated to linear groups coincide with the polynomials introduced by Lascoux Leclerc and Thibon (LLT polynomials).
We apply our criterion to problems in Fourier analysis on projective/injective limits, specifically to theorems of Paley--Wiener type.
We construct a new isomorphism between the endomorphism algebra of an induced cuspidal character sheaf and the group algebra of the relative Weyl group involved. We show it differs from Lusztig one by a linear character, and we relate this linear character to some stabilizers. Some consequences on characteristic functions of character sheaves are obtained. In the forthcoming part II, we will apply these methods to obtain a precision on Digne, Lehrer and Michel's theorem on Lusztig restriction of Gel'fand-Graev characters.
For Weyl groups of classical types, we present formulas to calculate the restriction of Springer representations to a maximal parabolic subgroup of the same type. As a result, we give recursive formulas for Euler characteristics of Springer fibers for classical types. We also give tables of those for exceptional types.
Let $W$ be the Weyl group of type $BC_n$. We first provide restriction formulas of the total Springer representations for the symplectic Lie algebra in characteristic 2 and the exotic case to the maximal parabolic subgroup of $W$ which is of type $BC_{n-1}$. Then we show that these two restriction formulas are equivalent, and discuss how the results can be used to examine the existence of affine pavings of Springer fibers corresponding to the symplectic Lie algebra in characteristic 2.

We establish Schur-Weyl reciprocity for the q-analogue of the alternating group. We analyze the sign q-permutation representation of the Hecke algebra on the tensor product of the super vector space V in detail, and examine its restriction to the q-analogue of the alternating group. In consequence, we find out that if the dimensions of even part and odd part of V are same, then the centralizer of the q-analogue of the alternating group is a Z_2-crossed product of the centralizer of the Hecke algebra and obtain Schur-Weyl reciprocity between them. Though the structure of the centralizer is more…
