Character polynomials are used to study the restriction of a polynomial representation of a general linear group to its subgroup of permutation matrices. A simple formula is obtained for computing inner products of class functions given by character polynomials. Character polynomials for symmetric and alternating tensors are computed using generating functions with Eulerian factorizations. These are used to compute character polynomials for Weyl modules, which exhibit a duality. By taking inner products of character polynomials for Weyl modules and character polynomials for Specht modules, stable restriction coefficients are easily computed. Generating functions of dimensions of symmetric group invariants in Weyl modules are obtained. Partitions with two rows, two columns, and hook partitions whose Weyl modules have non-zero vectors invariant under the symmetric group are characterized. A reformulation of the restriction problem in terms of a restriction functor from the category of strict polynomial functors to the category of finitely generated FI-modules is obtained.
We construct the polynomial induction functor, which is the right adjoint to the restriction functor from the category of polynomial representations of a general linear group to the category of representations of its Weyl group. This construction leads to a representation-theoretic proof of Littlewood's plethystic formula for the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group in such a restriction. The unimodality of certain bipartite partition functions follows.
We use character polynomials to obtain a positive combinatorial interpretation of the multiplicity of the sign representation in irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ indexed by two-column and hook partitions. Our method also yields a positive combinatorial interpretation for the multiplicity of the trivial representation of $S_n$ in an irreducible polynomial representation indexed by a hook partition.
Polynomial invariants are fundamental objects in analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces. Invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces are described by Weyl group invariant polynomial. In this article we give a simple criterion that ensure that the restriction of invariant polynomials to subspaces is surjective. In another paper we will apply our criterion to problems in Fourier analysis on projective/injective limits, specifically to theorems of Paley--Wiener type.
The Lie algebra $sl_2 ( \mathbb{C} )$ may be regarded in a natural way as a subalgebra of the infinite-dimensional Virasoro Lie algebra, and this suggests there may be connections between the representation theory of the two algebras. In this paper, we explore the restriction to $sl_2 ( \mathbb{C} )$ of certain induced modules for the Virasoro algebra. Specifically, we consider Virasoro modules induced from so-called polynomial subalgebras, and we show that the restriction of these modules results in twisted versions of familiar modules such as Verma modules and Whittaker modules.
We outline an approach to understanding restrictions of polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ to $S_n$ by first restricting to $T \rtimes S_n$, the subgroup of $n \times n$ monomial matrices. Using this approach we give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of a tensor product of symmetric powers of the defining representation.
We generalize Chevalley's theorem about restriction of \mathfrak{g}-invariant polynomial functions \mathfrak{g}->C to W-invariant functions on the Cartan \mathfrak{h}->C. We consider the case when \mathfrak{g} is replaced by a quantum group and the target space of the polynomial maps is replaced by a finite dimensional representation V of this quantum group. We prove that the restriction map Res:(O_q(G)\otimes V)^{U_q(\mathfrak{g})}-> O(H)\otimes V is injective and describe the image.
Let A be a character sheaf on a reductive connected group G over an algebraically closed field. Assuming that the characteristic is not bad, we show that for certain conjugacy classes D in G the restriction of A to D is a local system up to shift; we also give a parametrization of unipotent cuspidal character sheaves on G in terms of restrictions to conjugacy classes. Without restriction on characteristic we define canonical bijections from the set of unipotent character sheaves on G (and from the set of unipotent representations of the corresponding split reductive group over a finite field) …
Let $n$ and $k$ be natural numbers such that $2^k < n$. We study the restriction to $\mathfrak{S}_{n-2^k}$ of odd-degree irreducible characters of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. This analysis completes the study begun in [Ayyer A., Prasad A., Spallone S., Sem. Lothar. Combin. 75 (2015), Art. B75g, 13 pages] and recently developed in [Isaacs I.M., Navarro G., Olsson J.B., Tiep P.H., J. Algebra 478 (2017), 271-282].
For a finite group $G$ and complex character $χ\in\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ that restricts irreducibly to a normal subgroup $N\vartriangleleft G,$ we prove a theorem about Clifford correspondences between the characters of subgroups of $G$ that induce $χ.$
We generalize a result by Cunningham-Salmasian to a Mackey-type formula for the compact restriction of a semisimple perverse sheaf produced by parabolic induction from a character sheaf, under certain conditions on the parahoric group used to define compact restriction. This provides new tools for matching character sheaves with admissible representations.
Premet has conjectured that the nilpotent variety of any finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra is an irreducible variety. In this paper, we prove this conjecture in the case of Hamiltonian Lie algebra. and show that its nilpotent variety is normal and a complete intersection. In addition, we generalize the Chevalley Restriction theorem to Hamiltonian Lie algebra. Accordingly, we give the generators of the invariant polynomial ring.
We restrict irreducible characters of alternating groups of degree divisible by $p$ to their Sylow $p$-subgroups and study the number of linear constituents.
Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a real reductive Lie group and $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ a reductive subgroup of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ such that $\mathfrak{g'}$ is algebraic in $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we consider restrictions of irreducible representations of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ to $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ and induced representations of irreducible representations of $G'_{\mathbb{R}}$ to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. Our main concern is when such a representation has uniformly bounded multiplicities, i.e. the multiplicities in the representation are (essentially) bounded. We give characterizations of the uniform boundedness by p…
A family of symmetric functions $\tilde{s}_λ$ was introduced in [OZ], and independently in [AS]. The $\tilde{s}_λ$ encode many stability properties of representations of symmetric groups (e.g. when multiplied, the structure constants are reduced Kronecker coefficients). We show that the structure constants for the Kronecker comultiplication $Δ^*$ are multiplicities for the restriction of irreducible representations from $S_{mn}$ to $S_m \times S_n$ (provided $m$ and $n$ are sufficiently large), and use the structure of $\tilde{s}_λ$ to demonstrate two-row stability properties of these restrict…
In this paper, we give the decomposition into irreducible characters of the restriction to the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_{p-1} \wr \mathfrak{S}_w$ of any irreducible character of $(\mathbb{Z}_p \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_{p-1}) \wr \mathfrak{S}_w$, where $p$ is any odd prime, $w \geq 0$ is an integer, and $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{p-1}$ denote the cyclic groups of order $p$ and $p-1$ respectively. This answers the question of how to decompose the restrictions to $p$-regular elements of irreducible characters of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ in the $\mathbb{Z}$-basis corresponding to the …
Let (g,[p]) be a finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra, defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. The scheme of tori of maximal dimension of g gives rise to a finite group S(g) that coincides with the Weyl group of g in case g is a Lie algebra of classical type. In this paper, we compute the group S(g) for Lie algebras of Cartan type and provide applications concerning weight space decompositions, the existence of generic tori and polynomial invariants.
We use power sums plethysm operators to introduce H functions which interpolate between the Weyl characters and the Hall-Littlewood functions Q' corresponding to classical Lie groups. The coefficients of these functions on the basis of Weyl characters are parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and thus, are nonnegative. We prove that they can be regarded as quantizations of branching coefficients obtained by restriction to certain Levi subgroups. The H functions associated to linear groups coincide with the polynomials introduced by Lascoux Leclerc and Thibon (LLT polynomials).
We study irreducible restrictions from modules over symmetric groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. Such results are known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.
Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.
We study irreducible restrictions from modules over alternating groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. This is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. In view of our earlier work on symmetric groups we may consider only the restriction of irreducible modules over alternating groups which do not extend to symmetric groups. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott progr…
Let $\A$ be an algebra and let $f(x_1,...,x_d)$ be a multilinear polynomial in noncommuting indeterminates $x_i$. We consider the problem of describing linear maps $ϕ:\A\to \A$ that preserve zeros of $f$. Under certain technical restrictions we solve the problem for general polynomials $f$ in the case where $\A=M_n(F)$. We also consider quite general algebras $\A$, but only for specific polynomials $f$.
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
Let $G_2(q)$ be the Chevalley group of type $G_2$ defined over a finite field with q=p^n elements, where p is a prime number and $n$ is a positive integer. In this paper, we determine when the restriction of an absolutely irreducible representation of $G$ in characteristic other than p to a maximal subgroup of $G_2(q)$ is still irreducible. Similar results are obtained for $^2B_2(q)$ and $^2G_2(q)$.
Let G be a p-solvable group, P a p-subgroup and chi in Irr(G) such that chi(1)_p \ge |G:P|_p. We prove that the restriction chi_P is a sum of characters induced from subgroups Q\le P such that chi(1)_p=|G:Q|_p. This generalizes previous results by Giannelli--Navarro and Giannelli--Sambale on the number of linear constituents of chi_P. Although this statement does not hold for arbitrary groups, we conjecture a weaker version which can be seen as an extension of Brauer--Nesbitt's theorem on characters of p-defect zero. It also extends a conjecture of Wilde.
