It is shown that there is an order isomorphism $ϕ'$ from the poset $V$ of $B\times B$-orbits on the wonderful compactification of a semi-simple adjoint group $G$ with Weyl group $W$ to an interval in reverse Chevalley-Bruhat order on a non-canonically associated Coxeter group $\hat{W}$ (in general neither finite nor affine). Moreover, $ϕ'$ preserves the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Springer's (partly conjectural) construction of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the analogues of $V$ for general Coxeter groups $W$ is completed by reducing it by a similar order isomorphism to known results involving a ``twisted'' Chevalley-Bruhat order on $\hat{W}$.
Let X be the wonderful compactification of a semisimple adjoint algebraic group. Extending the standard monomials on the flag variety, Chirivi and Maffei constructed a basis of the space of global sections on X that is compatible with all closures of GxG-orbits in X. We show that this basis is also compatible with all BxB-orbit closures by defining subsets using only combinatorics of the underlying paths. Furthermore, we construct standard monomials on X that have properties similar to classical standard monomials.
Let $G$ be the symplectic group, $Φ=C_n$ its root system, $B\subset G$ its standard Borel subgroup, $W$ the Weyl group of $Φ$. To each involution $σ\in W$ one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ$ contained in the dual space of the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of $B$. We prove that $Ω_σ$ is contained in the Zariski closure of $Ω_τ$ if and only of $σ\leqτ$ with respect to the Bruhat--Chevalley order. We also prove that $\dimΩ_σ$ is equal to $l(σ)$, the length of $σ$ in $W$.
Let $G$ be a complex reductive group, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of G, $\nt$ be the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of $B$, and $\nt^*$ be its dual space. Let $Φ$ be the root system of $G$, and $Φ^+$ be the set of positive roots with respect to $B$. A subset of $Φ^+$ is called a rook placement if it consists of roots with pairwise non-positive inner products. To each rook placement $D$ one can associate the coadjoint orbit $Ω_D$ of $B$ in $\nt^*$. By definition, $Ω_D$ is the orbit of $f_D$, where $f_D$ is the sum of root covectors corresponging to the roots from $D$. We find the dimension of…
Let $G$ be a connected semi-simple algebraic group of adjoint type over an algebraically closed field, and let $\overline{G}$ be the wonderful compactification of $G$. For a fixed pair $(B, B^-)$ of opposite Borel subgroups of $G$, we look at intersections of Lusztig's $G$-stable pieces and the $B^-\times B$-orbits in $\overline{G}$, as well as intersections of $B \times B$-orbits and $B^- \times B^-$-orbits in $\overline{G}$. We give explicit conditions for such intersections to be non-empty, and in each case, we show that every non-empty intersection is smooth and irreducible, that the closu…
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
We give explicit formulas for torus-equivariant fundamental classes of closed $K$-orbits on the flag variety $G/B$ when $G$ is one of the classical groups $SL(n,\C)$, $SO(n,\C)$, or $Sp(2n,\C)$, and $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of $G$. We describe parametrizations of each orbit set and the combinatorics of its weak order, allowing us to compute formulas for the equivariant classes of all remaining orbit closures using divided difference operators. In each of the cases in type A, we realize the $K$-orbit closures as universal degeneracy loci of a certain type, involving a vector bundle $V$ over …
Let $B$ be the group of invertible upper-triangular complex $n\times n$ matrices, $\mathfrak{u}$ the space of upper-triangular complex matrices with zeroes on the diagonal and $\mathfrak{u}^*$ its dual space. The group $B$ acts on $\mathfrak{u}^*$ by $(g.f)(x)=f(gxg^{-1})$, $g\in B$, $f\in\mathfrak{u}^*$, $x\in\mathfrak{u}$. To each involution $σ$ in $S_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ letters, one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ\in\mathfrak{u}^*$. We present a combinatorial description of the partial order on the set of involutions induced by the orbit closures. The answer is given in terms of ro…
We classify the simple linear compactifications of SO(2r+1), namely those compactifications with a unique closed orbit which are obtained by taking the closure of the SO(2r+1)xSO(2r+1)-orbit of the identity in a projective space P(End(V)), where V is a finite dimensional rational SO(2r+1)-module.
In this article, we study compactifications of homogeneous spaces coming from equivariant, open embeddings into a generalized flag manifold $G/P$. The key to this approach is that in each case $G/P$ is the homogeneous model for a parabolic geometry; the theory of such geometries provides a large supply of geometric tools and invariant differential operators that can be used for this study. A classical theorem of J.~Wolf shows that any involutive automorphism of a semisimple Lie group $G$ with fixed point group $H$ gives rise to a large family of such compactifications of homogeneous spaces of …
Let $G$ be a real semisimple Lie group with finite center and let $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k \oplus \mathfrak p$ be a Cartan decomposition of its Lie algebra. Let $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak k$ and let $τ$ be an irreducible representation of $G$ on a complex vector space $V$. Let $h$ be a Hermitian scalar product on $V$ such that $τ(G)$ is compatible with respect to $\mathrm{U}(V,h)^{\mathbb C}$. We denote by $μ_{\mathfrak p}:\mathbb P(V) \longrightarrow \mathfrak p$ the $G$-gradient map and by $\mathcal O$ the unique closed orbit of $G$ in $\mathbb P(V)$…
If G is a complex semisimple algebraic group, we characterize the normality and the smoothness of its simple linear compactifications, namely those equivariant GxG-compactifications which possess a unique closed orbit and which arise in a projective space of the shape P(End(V)), where V is finite dimensional rational G-module. Both the characterizations are purely combinatorial and are expressed in terms of the highest weights of V. In particular, we show that Sp(2r) (with r > 0) is the unique non-adjoint simple group which admits a simple smooth compactification.
If $G$ is a complex simply connected semisimple algebraic group and if $λ$ is a dominant weight, we consider the compactification $X_λ$ in the projectivisation of $\End(V(λ))$ obtained as the closure of the $G\times G$-orbit of the identity and we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the support of $λ$ so that $X_λ$ is normal; as well, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the support of $λ$ so that $X_λ$ is smooth.
In this paper we describe geometry of orbits of upper triangular matrices of nilpotent order 2 under conjugation by the group of upper triangular invertible matrices in terms of link patterns. Further we apply this description to the computations of the closures of orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 and intersections of components of a Springer fiber of nilpotent order 2. In particular we connect our results to the combinatorics of meanders and Temperley-Lieb algebras.
In this paper, we introduce a quantum version of the wonderful compactification of a group as a certain noncommutative projective scheme. Our approach stems from the fact that the wonderful compactification encodes the asymptotics of matrix coefficients, and from its realization as a GIT quotient of the Vinberg semigroup. In order to define the wonderful compactification for a quantum group, we adopt a generalized formalism of $\mathsf{Proj}$ categories in the spirit of Artin and Zhang. Key to our construction is a quantum version of the Vinberg semigroup, which we define as a $q$-deformation …
Let $G$ be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, let $G_0 \subset G$ be the symmetric subgroup defined by an algebraic involution $σ$ and let $\mathfrak g_1 \subset \mathfrak g$ be the isotropy representation of $G_0$. Given an abelian subalgebra $\mathfrak a$ of $\mathfrak g$ contained in $\mathfrak g_1$ and stable under the action of some Borel subgroup $B_0 \subset G_0$, we classify the $B_0$-orbits in $\mathfrak a$ and we characterize the sphericity of $G_0 \mathfrak a$. Our main tool is the combinatorics of $σ$-minuscule elements in the affine Weyl …
We describe a family of compactifications of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions of any triangulated category following earlier work by Bapat, Deopurkar, and Licata. We particularly consider the case of the 2-Calabi--Yau category of the $A_2$ quiver. The compactification is the closure of an embedding (depending on $q$) of the stability space into an infinite-dimensional projective space. In the $A_2$ case, the three-strand braid group $B_3$ acts on this closure. We describe two distinguished braid group orbits in the boundary, points of which can be identified with certain rational f…
We show that a certain orbit category considerd by Keller encodes the combinatorics of the $m$-clusters of Fomin and Reading in a fashion similar to the way the cluster category of Buan, Marsh, Reineke, Reiten, and Todorov encodes the combinatorics of the clusters of Fomin and Zelevinsky. This allows us to give type-uniform proofs of certain results of Fomin and Reading in the simply laced cases.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and $α$, $β$, $γ$ be partitions. An algebraic group acts on the constructible set of short exact sequences of nilpotent $k$-linear operators of Jordan types $α$, $β$, and $γ$, respectively; we are interested in the stratification given by the orbits in the case where all parts of $α$ are at most 2. Geometric properties of the degeneration relation are controlled by the combinatorics of arc diagrams. The extended bubble sort algorithm is used to construct chains of orbits such that subsequent strata have dimension difference equal to one.
The classical Ehresmann-Bruhat order describes the possible degenerations of a pair of flags in a finite-dimensional vector space V; or, equivalently, the closure of an orbit of the group GL(V) acting on the direct product of two full flag varieties. We obtain a similar result for triples consisting of two subspaces and a partial flag in V; this is equivalent to describing the closure of a GL(V)-orbit in the product of two Grassmannians and one flag variety. We give a rank criterion to check whether such a triple can be degenerated to another one, and we classify the minimal degenerations. Our…
