In this paper we describe geometry of orbits of upper triangular matrices of nilpotent order 2 under conjugation by the group of upper triangular invertible matrices in terms of link patterns. Further we apply this description to the computations of the closures of orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 and intersections of components of a Springer fiber of nilpotent order 2. In particular we connect our results to the combinatorics of meanders and Temperley-Lieb algebras.
The intersection cohomologies of closures of nilpotent orbits of linear (respectively, cyclic) quivers are known to be described by Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the symmetric group (respectively, the affine symmetric group). We explain how to simplify this description using a combinatorial cancellation procedure, and derive some consequences for representation theory.
We study the orbits of $G=\mathrm{GL}(V)$ in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\mathcal{N}$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is the variety of nilpotent endomorphisms of $V$. These orbits are parametrized by bipartitions of $n=\dim V$, and we prove that the closure ordering corresponds to a natural partial order on bipartitions. Moreover, we prove that the local intersection cohomology of the orbit closures is given by certain bipartition analogues of Kostka polynomials, defined by Shoji. Finally, we make a connection with Kato's exotic nilpotent cone in type C, proving that the closure ordering is the …
We consider the conjugation-action of the Borel subgroup of the symplectic or the orthogonal group on the variety of nilpotent complex elements of nilpotency degree $2$ in its Lie algebra. We translate the setup to a representation-theoretic context in the language of a symmetric quiver algebra. This makes it possible to provide a parametrization of the orbits via a combinatorial tool that we call symplectic/orthogonal oriented link patterns. We deduce information about numerology. We then generalize these classifications to standard parabolic subgroups for all classical groups. Finally, our r…
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
We compare orbits in the nilpotent cone of type $B_n$, that of type $C_n$, and Kato's exotic nilpotent cone. We prove that the number of $\F_q$-points in each nilpotent orbit of type $B_n$ or $C_n$ equals that in a corresponding union of orbits, called a type-$B$ or type-$C$ piece, in the exotic nilpotent cone. This is a finer version of Lusztig's result that corresponding special pieces in types $B_n$ and $C_n$ have the same number of $\F_q$-points. The proof requires studying the case of characteristic 2, where more direct connections between the three nilpotent cones can be established. We …
In this manuscript, we compute explicitly the Lusztig-Vogan bijection for local systems of some classical, special, nilpotent orbits. Using these results, we prove a conjecture of Achar and Sommers on regular functions of some covers of classical nilpotent orbits.
We are interested in Poisson structures transverse to nilpotent adjoint orbits in a complex semi-simple Lie algebra, and we study their polynomial nature, introduced by R.Cushman and M.Roberts. Furthermore, in the case of sl(n), we construct some families of nilpotent orbits with quadratic transverse structures.
In the context of affine complex Kac-Moody algebras, we define the meaning of nilpotent orbits under the adjoint action of the maximal Kac-Moody group. We also give a parameterization of nilpotent orbits of $\mathfrak{sl}_n^{(1)}(\mathbb C)$.
Let us fix a complex simple Lie algebra and its non-compact real form. This paper focuses on non-zero adjoint nilpotent orbits in the complex simple Lie algebra meeting the real form. We show that the poset consisting of such nilpotent orbits equipped with the closure ordering has the minimum. Furthermore, we determine such the minimum orbit in terms of the Dynkin--Kostant classification even in the cases where the orbit does not coincide with the minimal nilpotent orbit in the complex simple Lie algebra. We also prove that the intersection of the orbit and the real form is the union of all mi…
We associate to each nilpotent orbit of a real semisimple Lie algebra $g_o$ a weighted Vogan diagram, that is a Dynkin diagram with an involution of the diagram, a subset of painted nodes and a weight for each node. Every nilpotent element of $g_o$ is noticed in some subalgebra of $g_o$. In this paper we characterize the weighted Vogan diagrams associated to orbits of noticed nilpotent elements.
We show that the dimension of the minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit for a complex simple Lie algebra is equal to twice the dual Coxeter number minus two.
We introduce a method to determine the maximum nilpotent orbit which intersects a variety of nilpotent matrices described by a strictly upper triangular matrix over a polynomial ring. We show that the result only depends on the ranks of its submatrices and we introduce conditions on a subvariety so that it intersects the same orbit. Then we describe a maximal nilpotent subalgebra of the centralizer of any nilpotent matrix; the previous method allows us to show that the maximum nilpotent orbit which intersects that centralizer only depends on which entries are identically 0 in that subalgebra. …
The orbits of the group B of upper-triangular matrices acting on 2-nilpotent complex matrices via conjugation are classified via oriented link patterns, generalizing A. Melnikov's classification of the B-orbits on upper-triangular such matrices. The orbit closures as well as the "building blocks" of minimal degenerations of orbits are described. The classification uses the theory of representations of finite-dimensional algebras. Furthermore, we initiate the study of the B-orbits on arbitrary nilpotent matrices.
In this paper, we construct and classify the special unipotent representations of a real reductive group attached to the principal nilpotent orbit. We give formulas for the $\mathbf{K}$-types, associated varieties, and Langlands parameters of all such representations.
We consider aspects of the relationship between nilpotent orbits in a semisimple real Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and those in its complexification $\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbb{C}}$. In particular, we prove that two distinct real nilpotent orbits lying in the same complex orbit are incomparable in the closure order. Secondly, we characterize those $\mathfrak{g}$ having non-empty intersections with all nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbb{C}}$. Finally, for $\mathfrak{g}$ quasi-split, we characterize those complex nilpotent orbits containing real ones.
Let g be a simple Lie algebra, with fixed Borel subalgebra b and with Weyl group W. Expanding on previous work of Fan and Stembridge in the simply laced case, this note aims to study the fully commutative elements of W, and their connections with the spherical nilpotent orbits in g. If g is not of type G_2, it is shown that an element w in W is fully commutative if and only if the subalgebra of b determined by the inversions of w lies in the closure of a spherical nilpotent orbit. A similar characterization is also given for the ad-nilpotent ideals of b, which are parametrized by suitable elem…
We propose a systematic and topological study of limits $\lim_{ν\to 0^+}G_\mathbb{R}\cdot(νx)$ of continuous families of adjoint orbits for non-compact simple Lie groups. This limit is always a finite union of nilpotent orbits. We describe explicitly these nilpotent orbits in terms of Richardson orbits in the case of hyperbolic semisimple elements. We also show that one can approximate minimal nilpotent orbits or even nilpotent orbits by elliptic semisimple orbits. The special cases of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{SU}(p,q)$ are computed in detail.
This paper deals with singularities of closures of $2$-nilpotent Borel conjugacy classes in either a $\text{GL}_n$-conjugacy class or in the nilpotent cone of $\text{GL}_n$. In the latter case we construct a resolution of singularities, in the former we show that singularities are rational by applying a result of M. Brion. We reason why this generalizes the result of N. Perrin and E. Smirnov on the rationality of singularities of Springer fiber components in the two-column case. In the case of Borel orbit closures being contained in orbital varieties, we give an alternative version of L. Fress…
We give the number of nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebras of orthogonal groups under the adjoint action of the groups over $\tF_{2^n}$. Let $G$ be an adjoint algebraic group of type $B,C$ or $D$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct the Springer correspondence for the nilpotent variety in the Lie algebra of $G$.
This is a survey article prepared for the submission to "Handbook of moduli". The following topics are discussed: (i) Basic facts and examples of resolutions for nilpotent orbit (ii) Q-factorial terminalizations of nilpotent orbit closures and related birational geometry (iii) Poisson deformations of nilpotent orbit closures.
In this paper I explore the relationship between regular functions associated to local systems on nilpotent orbits and unipotent representations in the complex groups.
We prove that the local intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures of cyclic quivers is trivial when the two orbits involved correspond to partitions with at most two rows. This gives a geometric proof of a result of Graham and Lehrer, which states that standard modules of the affine Hecke algebra of $GL_d$ corresponding to nilpotents with at most two Jordan blocks are multiplicity-free.
To any pair of commuting n x n nilpotent matrices it is associated a pair of partitions of n. We describe a maximal nilpotent subalgebra of the centralizer of a given nilpotent n x n matrix and prove a conjecture of Polona Oblak which consists in an algorithm for the determination of the maximum partition which forms with a given partition a pair with the previous property.
This paper studies nilpotent orbits in complex simple Lie algebras from the viewpoint of strongly visible actions in the sense of T. Kobayashi. We prove that the action of a maximal compact group consisting of inner automorphisms on a nilpotent orbit is strongly visible if and only if it is spherical, namely, admitting an open orbit of a Borel subgroup. Further, we find a concrete description of a slice in the strongly visible action. As a corollary, we clarify a relationship among different notions of complex nilpotent orbits: actions of Borel subgroups (sphericity); multiplicity-free represe…
We show that the numbers of nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $G_2$ in characteristic $3$ and in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $F_4$ in characteristic $2$ are finite. We determine the closure relation among nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of Lie algebras of type $B,C,F_4$ in characteristic $2$ and in the dual of Lie algebra of type $G_2$ in characteristic $3$. In each case we give an explicit description of the nilpotent pieces in the dual defined in \cite{CP}, which are in general unions of nilpotent coadjoint orbits, coincide with the earlier case…
We study in this paper the jet schemes of the closure of nilpotent orbits in a finite-dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra. For the nilpotent cone, which is the closure of the regular nilpotent orbit, all the jet schemes are irreducible. This was first observed by Eisenbud and Frenkel, and follows from a strong result of Mustautca (2001). Using induction and restriction of "little" nilpotent orbits in reductive Lie algebras, we show that for a large number of nilpotent orbits, the jet schemes of their closure are reducible. As a consequence, we obtain certain geometrical properties of the…
Let $G$ be the complex exceptional Lie group of type $G_2$. Among the five nilpotent orbits in its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, only the 8-dimensional orbit $\mathcal{O}_8$ has non-normal orbit closure $\bar{\mathcal{O}_8}$. In this short note, we will give a quantization model of $\bar{\mathcal{O}_8}$, verifying a conjecture of Vogan in 1984.
In this paper, we compute the character formula of the Brylinski model for all classical nilpotent varieties $\overline{\mathcal{O}}$. As a consequence, one can compute the multiplicities of all $K-$types of the ring of regular functions $R(\overline{\mathcal{O}})$ for all classical nilpotent varieties.
Let $G$ be an adjoint algebraic group of type $B$, $C$, or $D$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct a Springer correspondence for the Lie algebra of $G$. In particular, for orthogonal Lie algebras in characteristic 2, the structure of component groups of nilpotent centralizers is determined and the number of nilpotent orbits over finite fields is obtained.
We check that the statement of Hikita conjecture holds for the case of the minimal nilpotent orbit of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of type ADE and $\mathbb{C} ^2 / Γ$.
A short note to show that the elements of the (open) cone underlying a nilpotent orbit on a period domain are pairwise congruent under the symmetry group of the period domain.
The main result of this paper is an explicit formula for the Fourier transform of the canonical measure on a nilpotent coadjoint orbit for GL(n,R). This paper also includes some results on limit formulas for reductive Lie groups including new proofs of classical limit formulas of Rao and Harish-Chandra.
We study the ring of regular functions of classical spherical orbits $R(\mathcal{O})$ for $G = Sp(2n,\mathbb{C})$. In particular, treating $G$ as a real Lie group with maximal compact subgroup $K$, we focus on a quantization model of $\mathcal{O}$ when $\mathcal{O}$ is the nilpotent orbit $(2^{2p}1^{2q})$. With this model, we verify a conjecture by McGovern and another conjecture by Achar and Sommers for such orbits. Assuming the results in [Barbasch 2008], we will also verify the Achar-Sommers conjecture for a larger class of nilpotent orbits.
This paper is about nilpotent orbits of reductive groups over local non-Archimedean fields. In this paper we will try to identify for which groups there are only finitely many nilpotent orbits, for which groups the nilpotent orbits are separable and for which groups Howe's conjecture holds. For general reductive groups we get some partial results. For split reductive groups we get a classification in terms of the root data and the characteristic of the underlying local field.
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. For a nilpotent $G$-orbit $\mathcal O\subset\mathfrak g$, let $d_\mathcal O$ denote the maximal dimension of a subspace $V\subset \mathfrak g$ that is contained in the closure of $\mathcal O$. In this note, we prove that $d_\mathcal O \le \frac{1}{2}\dim\mathcal O$ and this upper bound is attained if and only if $\mathcal O$ is a Richardson orbit. Furthermore, if $V$ is $B$-stable and $\dim V= \frac{1}{2}\dim\mathcal O$, then $V$ is the nilradical of a polarisation of $\mathcal O$. Every nilpotent orbit closure has a disti…
Let $G$ be a real simple Lie group, $\got g$ its Lie algebra. Given a nilpotent adjoint $G$-orbit $O$, the question is to determine the irreducible unitary representations of $G$ that we can associate to $O$, according to the orbit method. P.Torasso, in [22], gave a method to solve this problem if $O$ is minimal. In this paper, we study the case where $O$ is any spherical nilpotent orbit of $sl_n({\mathbb R})$, we construct, from $O$, a family of representations of the two-sheeted covering of $SL_n({\mathbb R})$ with Torasso's method and, finally, we show that all these representations are ass…
We give a simple description of the closure of the nilpotent orbits appearing as associated varieties of admissible affine vertex algebras in terms of primitive ideals.
We describe Springer fibers corresponding to the minimal and minimal special nilpotent orbits of simple Lie algebras. As a result, we give an answer to the conjecture of Humphreys regarding some graphs attached to Springer fibers.
We classify completely prime primitive ideals whose associated varieties are the closure of the minimal nilpotent orbit of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$, and classify irreducible $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{k})$-modules which have those ideals as annihilators. Moreover, we irreducibly decompose them as $\mathfrak{k}$-modules.
We explicitly construct, in terms of Gelfand--Tsetlin tableaux, a new family of simple positive energy representations for the simple affine vertex algebra V_k(sl_{n+1}) in the minimal nilpotent orbit of sl_{n+1}. These representations are quotients of induced modules over the affine Kac-Moody algebra of sl_n+1 and include in particular all admissible simple highest weight modules and all simple modules induced from sl_2. Any such simple module in the minimal nilpotent orbit has bounded weight multiplicities.
We describe algorithms for computing the induced nilpotent orbits in semisimple Lie algebras. We use them to obtain the induction tables for the Lie algebras of exceptional type. This also yields the classification of the rigid nilpotent orbits in those Lie algebras.
We describe two algorithms for finding representatives of the nilpotent orbits of a theta-group. The algorithms have been implemented in the computer algebra system GAP (inside the package SLA). We comment on their performance. We apply the algorithms to study the nilpotent orbits of theta-groups, where theta is an N-regular automorphism of a simple Lie algebra of exceptional type.
This short note is a supplement to the previous article with the same title. Here we treat a conical symplectic variety obtained as a finite covering of a (not necessarily normal) nilpotent orbit closure of a complex semisimple Lie algebra.
We study the Lusztig-Vogan bijection for the case of a local system. We compute the bijection explicitly in type A for a local system and then show that the dominant weights obtained for different local systems on the same orbit are related in a manner made precise in the paper. We also give a conjecture (putatively valid for all groups) detailing how the weighted Dynkin diagram for a nilpotent orbit in the dual Lie algebra should arise under the bijection.
We define a set of "enhanced" nilpotent quiver representations that generalizes the enhanced nilpotent cone. This set admits an action by an associated algebraic group $K$ with finitely many orbits. We define a combinatorial set that parametrizes the set of orbits under this action and we derive a purely combinatorial formula for the dimension of an orbit.
Let $\g$ be simple Lie algebra. We give a conceptual proof for the fact that the nilpotent orbits of height 3 are spherical. It is shown that if the highest root of $\g$ is fundamental, then $\g$ has a specific nilpotent orbit of height 3. This orbit satisfies several interesting relations. Moreover, it can be used for an intrinsic construction of a $G_2$ grading in $\g$. We also discuss an approach to describing the algebra of covariants on a nilpotent orbit. For the nilpotent orbits of height 2, it is shown that the algebra of regular functions is a free module over the algebra of covariants…
We show that the Hilbert series of the projective variety $X=P(O_{min}),$ corresponding to the minimal nilpotent orbit $\mathcal O_{min},$ is universal in the sense of Vogel: it is written uniformly for all simple Lie algebras in terms of Vogel's parameters $α,β,γ$ and represents a special case of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{4}F_{3}.$ A universal formula for the degree of $X$ is then deduced.
We formulate and prove that there are "abundant" in nilpotent orbits in real semisimple Lie algebras, in the following sense. If S denotes the collection of hyperbolic elements corresponding the weighted Dynkin diagrams coming from nilpotent orbits, then S span the maximally expected space, namely, the (-1)-eigenspace of the longest Weyl group element. The result is used to the study of fundamental groups of non-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces.
We give a geometric description for the dominant characteristic of a nilpotent orbit in an arbitrary finite-dimensional rational G-module. In particular, we obtain a generalization of a recent result of Gunnells-Sommers, see math.RT/0212089.
Let $M$ be a $G$-covering of a nilpotent orbit in $\g$ where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group and $\g=\text{Lie}(G)$. We prove that under Poisson bracket the space $R[2]$ of homogeneous functions on $M$ of degree 2 is the unique maximal semisimple Lie subalgebra of $R=R(M)$ containing $\g$. The action of $\g'\simeq R[2]$ exponentiates to an action of the corresponding Lie group $G'$ on a $G'$-cover $M'$ of a nilpotent orbit in $\g'$ such that $M$ is open dense in $M'$. We determine all such pairs $(\g\subset\g')$.
In the case of complex symplectic and orthogonal groups, we find $(\mathfrak{g}, K)-$modules with the property that their $K-$structure matches the structure of regular functions on the closures of nilpotent orbits. This establishes a version of the Orbit Method of Kirrilov-Kostant-Souriau as proposed by Vogan. In the process we give another proof of the classification of nilpotent orbits with normal closure in the Lie algebra of a classical group first established by Kraft-Procesi.
In this note, we point out an error in the proof of Theorem 4.7 of [P. Achar and A.~Henderson, `Orbit closures in the enhanced nilpotent cone', Adv. Math. 219 (2008), 27-62], a statement about the existence of affine pavings for fibres of a certain resolution of singularities of an enhanced nilpotent orbit closure. We also give independent proofs of later results that depend on that statement, so all other results of that paper remain valid.
We study the regular function ring $R(\mathcal{O})$ for all symplectic nilpotent orbits $\mathcal{O}$ with even column sizes. We begin by recalling the quantization model for all such orbits by Barbasch using unipotent representations. With this model, we express the multiplicities of fundamental representations appearing in $R(\mathcal{O})$ by a parabolically induced module. Finally, we will use this formula to give a criterion on the normality of the Zariski closure $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$ of $\mathcal{O}$.
We relate the partition-type parametrization of rational (arithmetic) nilpotent adjoint orbits of the split classical groups $SL_n$ and $Sp_{2n}$ over local non-Archimedean fields with a parametrization, introduced by DeBacker in 2002, which uses the associated Bruhat-Tits building to relate the question to one over the residue field.
It is known that there is a bijection between dominant weights of a complex reductive Lie group $G$ and the set $\mathcal{N}_{\mathcal{O},r}$ whose elements are of the form $(\mathcal{O},ρ)$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is a nilpotent orbit and $ρ$ is an irreducible, algebraic representation of the stabilizer group $G^e$ of an element $e$ in the nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$. We would like to study the above bijection when $G$ is classical and $ρ$ corresponds to a local system of $\mathcal{O}$. In particular, we will prove Conjecture 3.1 in \cite{AS} and Conjecture 7.4' in \cite{Ac2} in the classical …
We study the quantizations of the algebras of regular functions on nilpotent orbits. We show that such a quantization always exists and is unique if the orbit is birationally rigid. Further we show that, for special birationally rigid orbits, the quantization has integral central character in all cases but four (one orbit in E_7 and three orbits in E_8). We use this to complete the computation of Goldie ranks for primitive ideals with integral central character for all special nilpotent orbits but one (in E_8). Our main ingredient is results on the geometry of normalizations of the closures of…
