Let $G$ be an adjoint algebraic group of type $B$, $C$, or $D$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct a Springer correspondence for the Lie algebra of $G$. In particular, for orthogonal Lie algebras in characteristic 2, the structure of component groups of nilpotent centralizers is determined and the number of nilpotent orbits over finite fields is obtained.
Recall that the Springer correspondence relates representations of the Weyl group to perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. We explain how to extend this to an equivalence between the triangulated category generated by the Springer perverse sheaves and the derived category of differential graded modules over a dg-ring related to the Weyl group.
In this note, we consider perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. We prove orthogonality relations for the equivariant category of sheaves on the nilpotent cone in a method similar to Lusztig's for character sheaves. We also consider cleanness for cuspidal perverse sheaves and the generalized Lusztig--Shoji algorithm.
Let $G$ be a simply connected algebraic group of type $B,C$ or $D$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct a Springer correspondence for the dual vector space of the Lie algebra of $G$. In particular, we classify the nilpotent orbits in the duals of symplectic and orthogonal Lie algebras over algebraically closed or finite fields of characteristic 2.
We describe Springer fibers corresponding to the minimal and minimal special nilpotent orbits of simple Lie algebras. As a result, we give an answer to the conjecture of Humphreys regarding some graphs attached to Springer fibers.
Let G = Sp (2n) be the symplectic group over Z. We present a certain kind of deformation of the nilpotent cone of G with G-action. This enables us to make direct links between the Springer correspondence of sp_{2n} over C, that over characteristic two, and our exotic Springer correspondence. As a by-product, we obtain a complete description of our exotic Springer correspondence.
This is a survey article on the Springer correspondence for symmetric spaces. We discuss various generalization of the theory of the Springer correspondence for reductive groups to symmetric spaces and exotic symmetric spaces associated to classical groups.
The Springer correspondence makes a link between the characters of a Weyl group and the geometry of the nilpotent cone of the corresponding semisimple Lie algebra. In this article, we consider a modular version of the theory, and show that the decomposition numbers of a Weyl group are particular cases of decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. We give some decomposition numbers which can be obtained geometrically. In the case of the symmetric group, we show that James' row and column removal rule for the symmetric group can be derived from a smooth equival…
In this paper, we study the affine Springer fiber $\mathcal{F} l_N$ in type $A$ for rectangular type semisimple nil-element $N$ and calculate the relative position between irreducible components. In particular, we use the affine matrix ball construction to show the relative position map is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig cell structure, generalizing the work of Steinberg and van Leeuwen.
We complete the determination of the generalised Springer correspondence for connected reductive algebraic groups, by proving a conjecture of Lusztig on the last open cases which occur for groups of type $E_8$.
We give a common framework for the classification of projective spin irreducible representations of a Weyl group, modeled after the Springer correspondence for ordinary representations.
Kato's exotic nilpotent cone was introduced as a substitute for the ordinary nilpotent cone of type C with cleaner properties. The geometric Robinson-Schensted correspondence is obtained by parametrizing the irreducible components of the Steinberg variety (the conormal variety for the action of a semisimple group on two copies of its flag variety); in type A the bijection coincides with the classical Robinson-Schensted algorithm for the symmetric group. Here we give a combinatorial description of the bijection obtained by using the exotic nilpotent cone instead of ordinary type C nilpotent con…
We establish a relation between the known parametrization of a family of irreducible representations of a Weyl group and Springer's correspondence. We outline a parametrization of unipotent character sheaves on a connected reductive group in terms of restrictions to various conjugacy classes.
We describe the Springer correspondence explicitly for exceptional Lie algebras of type $G_2$ and $F_4$ and their duals in bad characteristics, i.e. in characteristics 2 and 3.
The flag variety of a complex reductive linear algebraic group G is by definition the quotient G/B by a Borel subgroup. It can be regarded as the set of Borel subalgebras of Lie(G). Given a nilpotent element e in Lie(G), one calls Springer fiber the subvariety formed by the Borel subalgebras which contain e. Springer fibers have in general a complicated structure (not irreducible, singular). Nevertheless, a theorem by C. De Concini, G. Lusztig, and C. Procesi asserts that, when G is classical, a Springer fiber can always be paved by finitely many subvarieties isomorphic to affine spaces. In th…
The Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra has played an important role in representation theory. The nilpotent cone is equal to Spec R, where R is the ring of regular functions on the nilpotent cone. This paper constructs and studies an analogue of the Springer resolution for the variety Spec S, where S is the ring of regular functions on the universal cover of the regular nilpotent orbit. The construction makes use of the theory of toric varieties. Using this construction, we provide new proofs of results of Broer and of Graham about Spec S. Finally, we show th…
We define the notion of basic set data for finite groups (building on the notion of basic set, but including an order on the irreducible characters as part of the structure), and we prove that the Springer correspondence provides basic set data for Weyl groups. Then we use this to determine explicitly the modular Springer correspondence for classical types (defined over a base field of odd characteristic $p$, and with coefficients in a field of odd characteristic $\ell\neq p$): the modular case is obtained as a restriction of the ordinary case to a basic set. In order to do so, we compare the …
We give a combinatorial description of the Springer correspondence for classical Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B,C$ or $D$ and their duals $\mathfrak{g}^*$ in characteristic 2. The combinatorics used here is of the same kind as those appearing in the description of (generalized) Springer correspondence for unipotent case of classical groups $G$ by Lusztig in odd characteristic and by Lusztig and Spaltentstein in characteristic 2. It is very nice that this combinatorics gives a unified description for (generalized) Springer correspondences of classical groups in all cases, namely, in $G$…
In recent work, Graham has constructed a variety with a map to the nilpotent cone which is similar in some ways to the Springer resolution. One aspect in which Graham's map differs is that it is not in general an isomorphism over the principal orbit, but rather the universal covering map. This map gives rise to a certain semisimple perverse sheaf on the nilpotent cone, and we discuss here the problem of describing the summands of this perverse sheaf. For type $A_n$, a key tool is a known combinatorial description of an affine paving of Springer fibers.
We prove a derived equivalence between each block of the derived category of sheaves on the nilpotent cone and the category of differential graded modules over a degeneration of Lusztig's graded Hecke algebra. Along the way, we construct and study a mixed version of the geometric category. This work can be viewed as giving a derived version of the generalized Springer correspondence.
The Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone is used to give a geometric construction of the irreducible representations of Weyl groups. Borho and MacPherson obtain the Springer correspondence by applying the decomposition theorem to the Springer resolution, establishing an injective map from the set of irreducible Weyl group representations to simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. In this manuscript, we consider a generalization of the Springer resolution using a variety defined by the first author. Our main result shows that in the type A case, applying the decompositio…
In this paper we discuss some of Springer's work on unipotent elements in a reductive groups and on representations of Weyl groups. Among the topics considered are Springer's bijection from the unipotent variety to the nilpotent variety, Springer's example of nonrationality of certain representations of the Hecke algebras associated to a Weyl group and the Springer representation of the Weyl group associated to a unipotent element.
We construct affine pavings of Springer-type fibers over the enhanced nilpotent cone. This resolves a question of Achar-Henderson and implies the existence of perverse parity sheaves on the enhanced nilpotent cone.
We define a generalized Springer correspondence for the group GL(n) over any field. We also determine the cuspidal pairs, and compute the correspondence explicitly. Finally we define a stratification of the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone of GL(n) satisfying the `recollement' properties, and with subquotients equivalent to categories of representations of a product of symmetric groups.
Let $G = GL_N$ over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic, and $θ$ an involutive automorphism on $G$ such that $H = (G^θ)^0$ is isomorphic to $SO_N$. Then $G^{ιθ} = \{ g \in G \mid θ(g) = g^{-1} \}$ is regarded as a symmetric space $G/G^θ$. Let $G^{ιθ}_{uni}$ be the set of unipotent elements in $G^{ιθ}$. $H$ acts on $G^{ιθ}_{uni}$ by the conjugation. As an analogue of the generalized Springer correspondence in the case of reductive groups, we establish in this paper the generalized Springer correspondence between $H$-orbits in $G^{ιθ}_{uni}$ and irreducible representations of var…
Consider a nilpotent element e in a simple complex Lie algebra. The Springer fibre corresponding to e admits a discretization (discrete analogue) introduced by the author in 1999. In this paper we propose a conjectural description of that discretization which is more amenable to computation. We also propose a conjectural PBW analogue of that discretization. This version differs substantially from the previous one.
The orbital varieties are the irreducible components of the intersection between a nilpotent orbit and a Borel subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a reductive group. There is a geometric correspondence between orbital varieties and irreducible components of Springer fibers. In type A, a construction due to Richardson implies that every nilpotent orbit contains at least one smooth orbital variety and every Springer fiber contains at least one smooth component. In this paper, we show that this property is also true for the other classical cases. Our proof uses the interpretation of Springer fibers …
For a simply-connected simple algebraic group $G$ over $\C$, we exhibit a subvariety of its affine Grassmannian that is closely related to the nilpotent cone of $G$, generalizing a well-known fact about $GL_n$. Using this variety, we construct a sheaf-theoretic functor that, when combined with the geometric Satake equivalence and the Springer correspondence, leads to a geometric explanation for a number of known facts (mostly due to Broer and Reeder) about small representations of the dual group.
We construct a modular generalized Springer correspondence for any classical group, by generalizing to the modular setting various results of Lusztig in the case of characteristic-$0$ coefficients. We determine the cuspidal pairs in all classical types, and compute the correspondence explicitly for $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ with coefficients of arbitrary characteristic and for $\mathrm{SO}(n)$ and $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$ with characteristic-$2$ coefficients.
This paper is a survey on the topics concerning the Springer correspondence related to the varieties such as the enhanced variety or the exotic symmetric space. We explain in the case of exotic symmetric space of higher level, the complex reflection group $S_n \ltimes (\BZ/r\BZ)^n$ appears naturally in the framework of the Springer correspondence.
We study some aspects of modular generalized Springer theory for a complex reductive group $G$ with coefficients in a field $\mathbb k$ under the assumption that the characteristic $\ell$ of $\mathbb k$ is rather good for $G$, i.e., $\ell$ is good and does not divide the order of the component group of the centre of $G$. We prove a comparison theorem relating the characteristic-$\ell$ generalized Springer correspondence to the characteristic-$0$ version. We also consider Mautner's characteristic-$\ell$ `cleanness conjecture'; we prove it in some cases; and we deduce several consequences, inclu…
This is an overview of our series of papers on the modular generalized Springer correspondence. It is an expansion of a lecture given by the second author in the Fifth Conference of the Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum, Sanya, December 2014, as part of the Master Lecture `Algebraic Groups and their Representations' Workshop honouring G. Lusztig. The material that has not appeared in print before includes some discussion of the motivating idea of modular character sheaves, and heuristic remarks about geometric functors of parabolic induction and restriction.
We complete the construction of the modular generalized Springer correspondence for an arbitrary connected reductive group, with a uniform proof of the disjointness of induction series that avoids the case-by-case arguments for classical groups used in previous papers in the series. We show that the induction series containing the trivial local system on the regular nilpotent orbit is determined by the Sylow subgroups of the Weyl group. Under some assumptions, we give an algorithm for determining the induction series associated to the minimal cuspidal datum with a given central character. We a…
For a split reductive group scheme $G$ over a commutative ring $k$ with Weyl group $W$, there is an important functor $Rep(G,k) \to Rep(W,k)$ defined by taking the zero weight space. We prove that the restriction of this functor to the subcategory of small representations has an alternative geometric description, in terms of the affine Grassmannian and the nilpotent cone of the Langlands dual group to $G$. The translation from representation theory to geometry is via the Satake equivalence and the Springer correspondence. This generalizes the result for the $k=\mathbb{C}$ case proved by the fi…
Let V be an 2n-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic. Let G = GL(V), and H = Sp(V) the symplectic group contained in G. For a positive integer r > 1, we conisder the variety X = G/H \times V^{r-1}, on which H acts diagonally. X is called the exotic symmetric space of level r. Let W_{n,r} be the complex reflection group G(r,1,n). In this paper, generalizing the result for the case where r = 2, we show that there exists a natural bijective correspondence (Springer correspondence) between the set of irreducible representations of W_{n,r} and a certain s…
In \cite{Lusztig}, Lusztig gives an explicit formula for the bijection between the set of bipartitions and the set $\mathcal{N}$ of unipotent classes in a spin group which carry irreducible local systems equivariant for the spin group but not equivariant for the special orthogonal group. The set $\mathcal{N}$ has a natural partial order and therefore induces a partial order on bipartitions. We use the explicit formula given in \cite{Lusztig} to prove that this partial order on bipartitions is the same as the dominance order appeared in Dipper-James-Murphy's work.
In this paper we construct and study an action of the affine braid group associated to a semi-simple algebraic group on derived categories of coherent sheaves on various varieties related to the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone. In particular, we describe explicitly the action of the Artin braid group. This action is a "categorical version" of Kazhdan--Lusztig--Ginzburg's construction of the affine Hecke algebra, and is used in particular by the first author and Ivan Mirkovic in the course of the proof of Lusztig's conjectures on equivariant K-theory of Springer fibers.
We show that two Weyl group actions on the Springer sheaf with arbitrary coefficients, one defined by Fourier transform and one by restriction, agree up to a twist by the sign character. This generalizes a familiar result from the setting of l-adic cohomology, making it applicable to modular representation theory. We use the Weyl group actions to define a Springer correspondence in this generality, and identify the zero weight spaces of small representations in terms of this Springer correspondence.
We prove an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomials of parabolic character varieties of Riemann surfaces with semisimple local monodromies, which was conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Using an approach of Mozgovoy and Schiffmann the problem is reduced to counting pairs of a parabolic vector bundles and a nilpotent endomorphism of prescribed generic type. The generating function counting these pairs is shown to be a product of Macdonald polynomials and the function counting pairs without parabolic structure. The modified Macdonald polynomial $\tilde H_λ[X;q,t]$ is i…
In this paper we compute the cohomology of the Fano varieties of $k$-planes in the smooth complete intersection of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{2g+1}$, using Springer theory for symmetric spaces.
Kato introduced the exotic nilpotent cone to be a substitute for the ordinary nilpotent cone of type C with cleaner properties. Here we describe the irreducible components of exotic Springer fibres (the fibres of the resolution of the exotic nilpotent cone), and prove that they are naturally in bijection with standard bitableaux. As a result, we deduce the existence of an exotic Robinson-Schensted bijection, which is a variant of the type C Robinson-Schensted bijection between pairs of same-shape standard bitableaux and elements of the Weyl group; this bijection is described explicitly in the …
In this paper we establish Springer correspondence for the symmetric pair $(\mathrm{SL}(N),\mathrm{SO}(N))$ using Fourier transform, parabolic induction functor, and a nearby cycle sheaves construction due to Grinberg. As applications, we obtain results on cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and geometric constructions of irreducible representations of Hecke algebras of symmetric groups at $q=-1$.
We consider generalizations of the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone of a simple Lie algebra by replacing the cotangent bundle with certain other vector bundles over the flag variety. We show that the analogue of the Springer sheaf has as direct summands only intersection cohomology sheaves that arise in the Springer correspondence. The fibers of these general maps are nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and we build on techniques established by De Concini, Lusztig, and Procesi to study their geometry. For example, we show that these fibers have vanishing cohomology in odd degrees. This le…
In \cite{CVX3}, we have established a Springer theory for the symmetric pair $(\operatorname{SL}(N),\operatorname{SO}(N))$. In this setting we obtain representations of (the Tits extension) of the braid group rather than just Weyl group representations. These representations arise from cohomology of families of certain (Hessenberg) varieties. In this paper we determine the Springer correspondence explicitly for IC sheaves supported on order 2 nilpotent orbits. In this process we encounter universal families of hyperelliptic curves. As an application we calculate the cohomolgy of Fano varieties…
In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2…
Given the nilpotent cone of a complex reductive Lie algebra, we consider its equivariant constructible derived category of sheaves with coefficients in an arbitrary field. This category and its subcategory of perverse sheaves play an important role in Springer theory and the theory of character sheaves. We show that the composition of the Fourier--Sato transform on the Lie algebra followed by restriction to the nilpotent cone restricts to an autoequivalence of the derived category of the nilpotent cone. In the case of $GL_n$, we show that this autoequivalence can be regarded as a geometric ver…
One can associate an invariant to a large class of regular codimension two defects of the six dimensional $(0,2)$ SCFT $\mathscr{X}[j]$ using the classical Springer correspondence. Such an association allows a simple description of S-duality of associated Gaiotto-Witten boundary conditions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM for arbitrary gauge group and by extension, a determination of certain local aspects of class $\mathcal{S}$ constructions. I point out that the problem of \textit{classifying} the corresponding boundary conditions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM is intimately tied to possible symmetry breaking …
