A complete description of $Q$-conditional symmetries of reaction-diffusion-convection equation with arbitrary power nonlinearities is finished. It is shown that the results obtained in the first and second parts of this work (see arXiv:math-ph/0612078 and arXiv:0706.0814) cannot be extended on new power nonlinearities arising in the diffusion and convection coefficients.
A complete description of Q-conditional symmetries for two classes of reaction-diffusion-convection equations with power diffusivities is derived. It is shown that all the known results for reaction-diffusion equations with power diffusivities follow as particular cases from those obtained here but not vise versa.
This paper completes investigation of symmetry properties of nonlinear variable coefficient diffusion-convection equations of the form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$. Potential symmetries of equations from the considered class are found and the connection of them with Lie symmetries of diffusion-type equations is shown. Exact solutions of the Fujita--Storm equation $u_t=(u^{-2}u_x)_x$ are constructed.
In the first part of this paper math-ph/0612078, a complete description of Q-conditional symmetries for two classes of reaction-diffusion-convection equations with power diffusivities is derived. It was shown that all the known results for reaction-diffusion equations with power diffusivities follow as particular cases from those obtained in math-ph/0612078 but not vise versa. In the second part the symmetries obtained in are successfully applied for constructing exact solutions of the relevant equations. In the particular case, new exact solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion-convection (R…
Nonlinear PDE's having {\bf given} conditional symmetries are constructed. They are obtained starting from the invariants of the "conditional symmetry" generator and imposing the extra condition given by the characteristic of the symmetry. Several of examples starting from the Boussinesq and including non-autonomous Korteweg-De Vries like equations are given to showcase the methodology introduced.
Q-conditional (nonclassical) symmetries of the known three-component reaction-diffusion system [K. Aoki et al Theor. Pop. Biol. 50(1) (1996)] modeling interaction between farmers and hunter-gatherers are constructed for the first time. A wide variety of Q-conditional symmetries are found in an explicit form and it is shown that these symmetries are not equivalent to the Lie symmetries. Some operators of Q-conditional (nonclassical) symmetry are applied for finding exact solutions of the reaction-diffusion system in question. Properties of the exact solutions (in particular, their asymptotic be…
Q-conditional symmetries of the classical Lotka-Volterra system in the case of one space variable are completely described and a set of such symmetries in explicit form is constructed. The relevant non-Lie ansätze to reduce the classical Lotka-Volterra systems with correctly-specified coefficients to ODE systems and examples of new exact solutions are found. A possible biological interpretation of some exact solutions is presented.
Following a recently introduced approach to approximate Lie symmetries of differential equations which is consistent with the principles of perturbative analysis of differential equations containing small terms, we analyze the case of approximate $Q$--conditional symmetries. An application of the method to a hyperbolic variant of a reaction--diffusion--convection equation is presented.
A wide range of new Q-conditional symmetries for reaction-diffusion systems with power diffusivities are constructed. The relevant non-Lie ansatze to reduce the reaction-diffusion systems to ODE systems and examples of exact solutions are obtained. The relation of the solutions obtained with the development of spatially inhomogeneous structures is discussed.
The investigation of approximate symmetries of reparametrization invariant Lagrangians of n + 1 degrees of freedom and quadratic velocities is presented. We show that extra conditions emerge which give rise to approximate and conditional Noether symmetries of such constrained actions. The Noether symmetries are the simultaneous conformal Killing vectors of both the kinetic metric and the potential. In order to recover these conditional symmetry generators which would otherwise be lost in gauge fixing the lapse function entering the perturbative Lagrangian, one must consider the lapse among the…
Q-conditional symmetries (nonclassical symmetries) for a general class of two-component reaction-diffusion systems with constant diffusivities are studied. Using the recently introduced notion of Q-conditional symmetries of the first type (R. Cherniha J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., 2010. vol. 43., 405207), an exhaustive list of reaction-diffusion systems admitting such symmetry is derived. The form-preserving transformations for this class of systems are constructed and it is shown that this list contains only non-equivalent systems. The obtained symmetries permit to reduce the reaction-diffusion s…
Q-conditional symmetries (nonclassical symmetries) for a general class of two-component reaction-diffusion systems with non-constant diffusivities are studied. The work is a natural continuation of our paper (Cherniha and Davydovych, 2012) in order to extend the results on so-called no-go case. Using the notion of Q-conditional symmetries of the first type, an exhaustive list of reaction-diffusion systems admitting such symmetry is derived. The results obtained are compared with those derived earlier. The symmetries for reducing reaction-diffusion systems to two-dimensional dynamical systems (…
Q-conditional symmetries (nonclassical symmetries) for the general class of two-component reaction-diffusion systems with non-constant diffusivities are studied. Using the recently introduced notion of Q-conditional symmetries of the first type, an exhausted list of reaction-diffusion systems admitting such symmetry is derived. The results obtained for the reaction-diffusion systems are compared with those for the scalar reaction-diffusion equations. The symmetries found for reducing reaction-diffusion systems to two-dimensional dynamical systems, i.e., ODE systems, and finding exact solutions…
A class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion-convection equations describing various processes in physics, biology, chemistry etc. is under study in the case of time and two space variables. The group of equivalence transformations is constructed, which is applied for deriving a Lie symmetry classification for the class of such equations by the well-known algorithm. It is proved that the algorithm leads to 32 reaction-diffusion-convection equations admitting nontrivial Lie symmetries. Furthermore a set of form-preserving transformations for this class is constructed in order to reduce this number o…
Lie and Q-conditional symmetries of the classical three-component diffusive Lotka - Volterra system in the case of one space variable are studied. The group-classification problems for finding Lie symmetries and Q-conditional symmetries of the first type are completely solved. Notably, non-Lie symmetries (Q-conditional symmetry operators) for a multi-component non-linear reaction-diffusion system are constructed for the first time. An example of non-Lie symmetry reduction for solving a biologically motivated problem is presented.
We analyze the relationship of generalized conditional symmetries of evolution equations to the formal compatibility and passivity of systems of differential equations as well as to systems of vector fields in involution. Earlier results on the connection between generalized conditional invariance and generalized reduction of evolution equations are revisited. This leads to a no-go theorem on determining equations for operators of generalized conditional symmetry. It is also shown that up to certain equivalences there exists a one-to-one correspondence between generalized conditional symmetrie…
This paper contains an analysis of rank-k solutions in terms of Riemann invariants, obtained from interrelations between two concepts, that of the symmetry reduction method and of the generalized method of characteristics for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of PDEs in many dimensions. A variant of the conditional symmetry method for obtaining this type of solutions is proposed. A Lie module of vector fields, which are symmetries of an overdetermined system defined by the initial system of equations and certain first order differential constraints, is constructed. It is shown that th…
New definitions of $Q$-conditional symmetry for systems of PDEs are presented, which generalize the standard notation of non-classical (conditional) symmetry. It is shown that different types of $Q$-conditional symmetry of a system generate a hierarchy of conditional symmetry operators. A class of two-component nonlinear RD systems is examined to demonstrate applicability of the definitions proposed and it is shown when different definitions of $Q$-conditional symmetry lead to the same operators.
This work presents a geometrical formulation of the Clairin theory of conditional symmetries for higher-order systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We devise methods for obtaining Lie algebras of conditional symmetries from known conditional symmetries, and unnecessary previous assumptions of the theory are removed. As a consequence, new insights into other types of conditional symmetries arise. We then apply the so-called PDE Lie systems to the derivation and analysis of Lie algebras of conditional symmetries. In particular, we develop a method for obtaining solutions of a higher-…
Potential equivalence transformations (PETs) are effectively applied to a class of nonlinear diffusion-convection equations. For this class all possible potential symmetries are classified and a theorem on connection of them with point ones via PETs is also proved. It is shown that the known non-local transformations between equations under consideration are nothing but PETs. Action of PETs on sets of exact solutions of a fast diffusion equation is investigated.
We present classification of Q-conditional symmetries for the two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations and the reductions corresponding to these nonlinear symmetries. Classification of inequivalent reductions is discussed.
This is the second part of the series of papers on symmetry properties of a class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$. At first, we review the results of Part 1 of the series on equivalence transformations and group classification of the class under consideration. Investigation of non-trivial limits of parameterized subclasses of equations from the given class, which generate contractions of the corresponding maximal Lie invariance algebras, leads to the natural notion of contractions of system…
The notions of generating sets of conservation laws of systems of differential equations with respect to symmetry groups and equivalence groups are introduced and applied. This allows us to generalize essentially the procedure of finding potential symmetries for the systems with multidimensional spaces of conservation laws. A class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$ is investigated. Using the most direct method, we carry out two classifications of local conservation laws up to equivalence rela…
The definition of Q-conditional symmetry for one PDE is correctly generalized to a special case of systems of PDEs and involutive families of operators. The notion of equivalence of Q-conditional symmetries under a group of local transformation is introduced. Using this notion, all possible single Q-conditional symmetry operators are classified for the n-dimensional (n >= 2) linear heat equation and for the Euler equations describing the motion of an incompressible ideal fluid.
A new approach to the solution of quasilinear nonelliptic first-order systems of inhomogeneous PDEs in many dimensions is presented. It is based on a version of the conditional symmetry and Riemann invariant methods. We discuss in detail the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of rank-2 and rank-3 solutions expressible in terms of Riemann invariants. We perform the analysis using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for a certain algebraic system associated with the initial system. The problem of finding such solutions has been reduced to expanding a set of trace conditions on wave ve…
A new definition of conditional invariance for boundary value problems involving a wide range of boundary conditions (including initial value problems as a special case) is proposed. It is shown that other definitions worked out in order to find Lie symmetries of boundary value problems with standard boundary conditions, follow as particular cases from our definition. Simple examples of direct applicability to the nonlinear problems arising in applications are demonstrated. Moreover, the successful application of the definition for the Lie and conditional symmetry classification of a class of …
A conditional symmetry is defined, in the phase-space of a quadratic in velocities constrained action, as a simultaneous conformal symmetry of the supermetric and the superpotential. It is proven that such a symmetry corresponds to a variational (Noether) symmetry. The use of these symmetries as quantum conditions on the wave-function entails a kind of selection rule. As an example, the minisuperspace model ensuing from a reduction of the Einstein - Hilbert action by considering static, spherically symmetric configurations and r as the independent dynamical variable, is canonically quantized. Symmetry properties of PDE's are considered within a systematic and unifying scheme: particular attention is devoted to the notion of conditional symmetry, leading to the distinction and a precise characterization of the notions of ``true'' and ``weak'' conditional symmetry. Their relationship with exact and partial symmetries is also discussed. An extensive use of ``symmetry-adapted'' variables is made; several clarifying examples, including the case of Boussinesq equation, are also provided.
Using a new method and additional (conditional and partial) equivalence transformations, we performed group classification in a class of variable coefficient $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of the general form $f(x)u_t=(D(u)u_x)_x+K(u)u_x.$ We obtain new interesting cases of such equations with the density $f$ localized in space, which have large invariance algebra. Exact solutions of these equations are constructed. We also consider the problem of investigation of the possible local trasformations for an arbitrary pair of equations from the class under considerati…
We consider a system of partial differential equations, of interest to plasma physics, and provide all its Lie point symmetries, with their respective invariant solutions. We also discuss some of its conditional and partial symmetries. We finally show that, although the system can be cast in divergence form and admits conserved currents, it does not admit potential symmetries.

We present a version of the conditional symmetry method in order to obtain multiple wave solutions expressed in terms of Riemann invariants. We construct an abelian distribution of vector fields which are symmetries of the original system of PDEs subjected to certain first order differential constraints. The usefulness of our approach is demonstrated on simple and double wave solutions of MHD equations. The paper also contains a comparison of the conditional symmetry method with the generalized method of characteristics. Received 19 April, 2003; Accepted 10 June, 2003 Final Version published i…
Conditional and Lie symmetries of semi-linear 1D Schrödinger and diffusion equations are studied if the mass (or the diffusion constant) is considered as an additional variable. In this way, dynamical symmetries of semi-linear Schrödinger equations become related to the parabolic and almost-parabolic subalgebras of a three-dimensional conformal Lie algebra conf_3. We consider non-hermitian representations and also include a dimensionful coupling constant of the non-linearity. The corresponding representations of the parabolic and almost-parabolic subalgebras of conf_3 are classified and the co…

A discussion is presented, within a simple unifying scheme, about different types of symmetry of PDE's, with the introduction and a precise characterization of the notions of "standard" and "weak" conditional symmetries, together with their relationship with exact and partial symmetries. An extensive use of "symmetry-adapted" variables will be made, and some clarifying examples are provided.
We construct infinite hierarchies of nonlocal higher symmetries for the oriented associativity equations using solutions of associated vector and scalar spectral problems. The symmetries in question generalize those found by Chen, Kontsevich and Schwarz (arXiv:hep-th/0508221) for the WDVV equations. As a byproduct, we obtain a Darboux-type transformation and a (conditional) Bäcklund transformation for the oriented associativity equations.
When we consider a differential equation $Δ=0$ whose set of solutions is ${\cal S}_Δ$, a Lie-point exact symmetry of this is a Lie-point invertible transformation $T$ such that $T({\cal S}_Δ)={\cal S}_Δ$, i.e. such that any solution to $Δ=0$ is tranformed into a (generally, different) solution to the same equation; here we define {\it partial} symmetries of $Δ=0$ as Lie-point invertible transformations $T$ such that there is a nonempty subset ${\cal P} \subset {\cal S}_Δ$ such that $T({\cal P}) = {\cal P}$, i.e. such that there is a subset of solutions to $Δ=0$ which are transformed one into t…
Characteristic examples of continuous symmetries in hydrodynamic plasma theory (partial differential equations) and in kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell models (integro-differential equations) are considered. Possible symmetry extensions conditional and extended symmetries are discussed. Physical reasons for these symmetry extensions are clarified.
Symmetry group methods are applied to obtain all explicit group-invariant radial solutions to a class of semilinear Schrodinger equations in dimensions $n\neq 1$. Both focusing and defocusing cases of a power nonlinearity are considered, including the special case of the conformal power $p=4/n$ relevant for critical dynamics. The methods involve, firstly, reduction of the semilinear Schrodinger equations to group-invariant complex 2nd order ODEs with respect to an optimal set of one-dimensional point symmetry groups, and secondly, use of inherited symmetries, hidden symmetries, and conditional …
A model "remarkable" fin equation is singled out from a class of nonlinear (1+1)-dimensional fin equations. For this equation a number of exact solutions are constructed by means of using both classical Lie algorithm and different modern techniques (functional separation of variables, generalized conditional symmetries, hidden symmetries etc).
We study possible Lie and non-classical reductions of multidimensional wave equations and the special classes of possible reduced equations - their symmetries and equivalence classes. Such investigation allows to find many new conditional and hidden symmetries of the original equations.
Group classification of a class of nonlinear fin equations is carried out exhaustively. Additional equivalence transformations and conditional equivalence groups are also found. They allow to simplify results of classification and further applications of them. The derived Lie symmetries are used to construct exact solutions of truly nonlinear equations for the class under consideration. Nonclassical symmetries of the fin equations are discussed. Adduced results amend and essentially generalize recent works on the subject [M. Pakdemirli and A.Z. Sahin, Appl. Math. Lett., 2006, V.19, 378-384; A.…
The authors give a detailed information about symmetry (Lie, non-Lie, conditional) of nonlinear PDEs for spinor, vector and scalar fields; using advanced methods of group-theoretical, symmetry analysis construct wide families of classical solutions of the nonlinear Dirac, Yang-Mills, Maxwell-Dirac, Dirac-d'Alembert, d'Alembert-Hamilton equations; expound a new symmetry approach to variable separation in linear and nonlinear PDEs, which allows, in particular, to classify separable Schroedinger equations. The book offers a uniform and relatively simple presentation of a considerable amount of ma…
The reduction operators, i.e., the operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of (1+1)-dimensional second order linear parabolic partial differential equations and all the possible reductions of these equations to ordinary differential ones are exhaustively described. This problem proves to be equivalent, in some sense, to solving the initial equations. The ``no-go'' result is extended to the investigation of point transformations (admissible transformations, equivalence transformations, Lie symmetries) and Lie reductions of the determining equations for the nonclassical symmetries. The notion of singular reduction modules, i.e., of singular modules of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of differential equations is introduced. It is shown that the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for differential equations can be improved by an in-depth prior study of the associated singular modules of vector fields. The form of differential functions and differential equations possessing parameterized families of singular modules is described up to point transformations. Singular cases of finding reduction modules are related to lowering the order of the corresponding reduced equa…
The notion of singular reduction operators, i.e., of singular operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of partial differential equations in two independent variables is introduced. All possible reductions of these equations to first-order ODEs are are exhaustively described. As examples, properties of singular reduction operators of (1+1)-dimensional evolution and wave equations are studied. It is shown how to favourably enhance the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for this class by an in-depth prior study of the corresponding singular vector fields.
Lie symmetries of K(m,n) equations with time-dependent coefficients are classified. Group classification is presented up to widest possible equivalence groups, the usual equivalence group of the whole class for the general case and conditional equivalence groups for special values of the exponents m and n. Examples on reduction of K(m,n) equations (with initial and boundary conditions) to nonlinear ordinary differential equations (with initial conditions) are presented.
Reduction operators (called also nonclassical or $Q$-conditional symmetries) of variable coefficient semilinear reaction-diffusion equations with exponential source $f(x)u_t=(g(x)u_x)_x+h(x)e^{mu}$ are investigated using the algorithm involving a mapping between classes of differential equations, which is generated by a family of point transformations. A special attention is paid for checking whether reduction operators are inequivalent to Lie symmetry operators. The derived reduction operators are applied to construction of exact solutions.
The group classification of a class of variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with exponential nonlinearities is carried out up to both the equivalence generated by the corresponding generalized equivalence group and the general point equivalence. The set of admissible transformations of this class is exhaustively described via finding the complete family of maximal normalized subclasses and associated conditional equivalence groups. Limit processes between variable coefficient reaction-diffusion equations with power nonlinearities and those with exponential nonlinearities are simul…
