We carry out the extended symmetry analysis of a two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation. Its complete point-symmetry group is found using the algebraic method, and all its generalized symmetries are proved equivalent to its Lie symmetries. We also prove that the space of conservation laws of this equation is infinite-dimensional and is naturally isomorphic to the solution space of the (1+1)-dimensional backward linear heat equation. Lie reductions of the two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation are comprehensively studied in the optimal way and new Lie invariant solutions are constructed. We additionally consider solutions that also satisfy an analogous nondegenerate Burgers equation. In total, we construct four families of solutions of two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation that are expressed in terms of arbitrary (nonzero) solutions of the (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equation. Various kinds of hidden symmetries and hidden conservation laws (local and potential ones) are discussed as well. As a by-product, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and conservation laws of the transport equation, also called the inviscid Burgers equation, and construct new invariant solutions of the nonlinear diffusion and diffusion-convection equations with power nonlinearities of degree -1/2.
We study admissible transformations and Lie symmetries for a class of variable-coefficient Burgers equations. We combine the advanced methods of splitting into normalized subclasses and of mappings between classes that are generated by families of point transformations parameterized by arbitrary elements of the original classes. A nontrivial differential constraint on the arbitrary elements of the class of variable-coefficient Burgers equations leads to its partition into two subclasses, which are related to normalized classes via families of point transformations parameterized by subclasses' …
It is studied the Cauchy problem for the equations of Burgers' type but with bounded dissipation flux. Such equations degenerate to hyperbolic ones as the velocity gradient tends to infinity. Thus the discontinuous solutions are permitted. In the paper the definition of the generalized solution is given and the existence theorem is established in the classes of functions close to ones of bounded variation. The main feature of used a priori estimates is the fact that one needs to estimate only the diffusion flux, which allows to have in fact arbitrary local growth of the velocity gradient. The …
The paper is a comprehensive study of the existence, uniqueness, blow up and regularity properties of solutions of the Burgers equation with fractional dissipation. We prove existence of the finite time blow up for the power of Laplacian $α< 1/2,$ and global existence as well as analyticity of solution for $α\geq 1/2.$ We also prove the existence of solutions with very rough initial data $u_0 \in L^p,$ $1 < p < \infty.$ Many of the results can be extended to a more general class of equations, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation.
The notion of Kruzhkov entropy solution was extended by the first author in 2007 to conservation laws with a fractional laplacian diffusion term; this notion led to well-posedness for the Cauchy problem in the $L^\infty$-framework. In the present paper, we further motivate the introduction of entropy solutions, showing that in the case of fractional diffusion of order strictly less than one, uniqueness of a weak solution may fail.
The complete group classification problem for the class of (1+1)-dimensional $r$th order general variable-coefficient Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equations is solved for arbitrary values of $r$ greater than or equal to two. We find the equivalence groupoids of this class and its various subclasses obtained by gauging equation coefficients with equivalence transformations. Showing that this class and certain gauged subclasses are normalized in the usual sense, we reduce the complete group classification problem for the entire class to that for the selected maximally gauged subclass, and it is the…
The aim of this note is to present preliminary existence results for a system of cross-diffusion equations defined on a domain with moving boundaries, which model the evolution of the concentrations of different chemical species in a solid during a Chemical Vapor Deposition process. The system of equations, when the domain remains fixed over time, can be seen formally as a gradient flow system which can be analyzed using the boundedness by entropy method introduced by Burger and Jüngel. Preliminary existence results are presented in the case of a one-dimensional moving boundary domain.
We consider global schemes with H2-estimates for the multivariate Burgers equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in its Leray projection form. We extend the definition of a global scheme and the global L2-theory of the multivariate Burgers equation to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, where we consider estimates of the gradient of the pressure in its Leray projection form in H1 at each time step of the scheme. The extended scheme has a simplified control function (simplified compared to [7]), which controls the growth of the Leray projection term. We use the fact that …
Coherent structures are solutions to reaction-diffusion systems that are time-periodic in an appropriate moving frame and spatially asymptotic at $x=\pm\infty$ to spatially periodic travelling waves. This paper is concerned with sources which are coherent structures for which the group velocities in the far field point away from the core. Sources actively select wave numbers and therefore often organize the overall dynamics in a spatially extended system. Determining their nonlinear stability properties is challenging as localized perturbations may lead to a non-localized response even on the …

In many situations, the notion of function is not sufficient and it needs to be extended. A classical way to do this is to introduce the notion of weak solution; another approach is to use generalized functions. Ultrafunctions are a particular class of generalized functions that has been previously introduced and used to define generalized solutions of stationary problems in [4,7,9,11,12]. In this paper we generalize this notion in order to study also evolution problems. In particular, we introduce the notion of Generalized Ultrafunction Solution (GUS) for a large family of PDE's, and we confr…
The shock discontinuities, generically present in inviscid solutions of the forced Burgers equation, and their bifurcations happening in the course of time (perestroikas) are classified in two and three dimensions -- the one-dimensional case is well known. This classification is a result of selecting among all the perestroikas occurring for minimum functions depending generically on time, the ones permitted by the convexity of the Hamiltonian of the Burgers dynamics. Topological restrictions on the admissible perestroikas of shocks are obtained. The resulting classification can be extended to …
This paper analyses the well-posedness and properties of the extended play-type model which was proposed in [van Duijn & Mitra (2018)] to incorporate hysteresis in unsaturated flow through porous media. The model, when regularised, reduces to a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. This has an interesting mathematical structure which, to our knowledge, still remains unexplored. The existence of solutions for the non-degenerate version of the model is shown using the Rothe's method. An equivalent to maximum principle is proven for the solutions.…

We prove the uniqueness of the martingale problem associated to some degenerate operators. The key point is to exploit the strong parallel between the new technique introduced by Bass and Perkins (From Probability to Geometry, vol. in honor of J.M Bismut (2009)) to prove uniqueness of the martingale problem in the framework of non degenerated elliptic operators and the Mc Kean and Singer (Journal of Diff. Geometry, 1967) parametrix approach to the density expansion that has previously been extended to the degenerate setting that we consider (see Delarue and Menozzi, Journal of Funct. Analysis,…

We consider the Dirichlet problem for a class of elliptic and parabolic equations in the upper-half space $\mathbb{R}^d_+$, where the coefficients are the product of $x_d^α, α\in (-\infty, 1),$ and a bounded uniformly elliptic matrix of coefficients. Thus, the coefficients are singular or degenerate near the boundary $\{x_d =0\}$ and they may not locally integrable. The novelty of the work is that we find proper weights under which the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions in Sobolev spaces are established. These results appear to be the first of their kind and are new even if the…
We study a class of second-order degenerate linear parabolic equations in divergence form in $(-\infty, T) \times \mathbb R^d_+$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on $(-\infty, T) \times \partial \mathbb R^d_+$, where $\mathbb R^d_+ = \{x \in \mathbb R^d\,:\, x_d>0\}$ and $T\in {(-\infty, \infty]}$ is given. The coefficient matrices of the equations are the product of $μ(x_d)$ and bounded uniformly elliptic matrices, where $μ(x_d)$ behaves like $x_d^α$ for some given $α\in (0,2)$, which are degenerate on the boundary $\{x_d=0\}$ of the domain. Under a partially VMO assumption on th…
This paper aims at providing a first step toward a qualitative theory for a new class of chemotaxis models derived from the celebrated Keller-Segel system, with the main novelty being that diffusion is nonlinear with flux delimiter features. More precisely, as a prototypical representative of this class we study radially symmetric solutions of the parabolic-elliptic system (see the text). Under the initial condition $u|_{t=0}=u_0>0$ and no-flux boundary conditions in balls $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, where $χ>0$ and $μ:=\frac{1}{|Ω|} \int_Ωu_0$.\abs The main results assert the existence of a uniqu…
We derive an explicit formula for global weak solutions of the one dimensional system of pressure-less Euler-Poisson equations. Our variational formulation is an extension of the well-known formula for entropy solutions of the scalar inviscid Burgers' equation: since the characteristics of the Euler-Poisson equations are parabolas, the representation of their weak solution takes the form of a "quadratic" version of the celebrated Lax-Oleinik variational formula. Three cases are considered. (i) The variational formula recovers the "sticky particle" solution in the attractive case; (ii) It repre…
This work investigates an inverse problem of determining the radiative coefficient in a degenerate parabolic equation from the final overspecified data. Being different from other inverse coefficient problems in which the principle coefficients are assumed to be strictly positive definite, the mathematical model discussed in the paper belongs to the second order parabolic equations with non-negative characteristic form, namely that there exists degeneracy on the lateral boundaries of the domain. The uniqueness of the solution is obtained by the contraction mapping principle. Based on the optim…
