The paper is a comprehensive study of the existence, uniqueness, blow up and regularity properties of solutions of the Burgers equation with fractional dissipation. We prove existence of the finite time blow up for the power of Laplacian $α< 1/2,$ and global existence as well as analyticity of solution for $α\geq 1/2.$ We also prove the existence of solutions with very rough initial data $u_0 \in L^p,$ $1 < p < \infty.$ Many of the results can be extended to a more general class of equations, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation.
The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{\fracα{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers' solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state s…
We show the vanishing viscosity limit to entropy shocks for the fractal Burgers equation in one space dimension. More precisely, we quantify the rate of convergence of the inviscid limit in $L^2$ for large initial perturbations around the entropy shock on any bounded time interval. This is the first result on the inviscid limit to entropy shock for the fractal Burgers equation with the quantified convergence, for large initial perturbations.
In this paper, we provide two-sided estimates for the source solution of $d$-dimensional critical fractal Burgers equation $u_t-Δ^{α/2}+b\cdot \nabla\left(u|u|^q\right)=0$, $q=(α-1)/d$, $α\in(1,2)$, $b\in\mathbb{R}^d$, by the density function of the isotropic $α$-stable process.
We study the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of the axisymmetric linear strain, where the strain rate depends on time in a specific manner. It is known that the system admits solutions which blow up in finite time and whose profiles are in a backward self-similar form of the familiar Burgers vortices. In this paper it is shown that the existing stability theory of the Burgers vortex leads to the stability of these blow-up solutions as well. The secondary blow-up is also observed when the strain rate is relatively weak.
In the paper, the large time behavior of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one dimensional fractal Burgers equation $u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0$ with $α\in (1,2)$ is studied. It is shown that if the nondecreasing initial datum approaches the constant states $u_\pm$ ($u_-<u_+$) as $x\to \pm\infty$, respectively, then the corresponding solution converges toward the rarefaction wave, {\it i.e.} the unique entropy solution of the Riemann problem for the nonviscous Burgers equation.
We prove finite time blowup of the Burgers-Hilbert equation. We construct smooth initial data with finite $H^5$-norm such that the $L^\infty$-norm of the spacial derivative of the solution blows up. The blowup is an asymptotic self-similar shock at one single point with an explicitly computable blowup profile. The blowup profile is a cusp with Hölder $1/3$ continuity. The blowup time and location are described in terms of explicit ODEs. Our proof uses a transformation to modulated self-similar variables, the quantitative properties of the stable self-similar solution to the inviscid Burgers eq…
The paper is concerned with the time-periodic (T-periodic) problem of the fractal Burgers equation with a T-periodic force on the real line. Based on the Galerkin approximates and Fourier series (transform) methods, we first prove the existence of T-periodic solution to a linearized version. Then, the existence and uniqueness of T-periodic solution to the nonlinear equation are established by the contraction mapping argument. Furthermore, we show that the unique T-periodic solution is asymptotically stable. This analysis, which is carried out in energy space $ H^{1}(0,T;H^{\fracα{2}}(R))\cap L…
In this paper, we provide two-sided estimates and uniform asymptotics for the solution of $d$-dimensional critical fractal Burgers equation $u_t-Δ^{α/2}u+b\cdot \nabla\left(u|u|^q\right)=0$, $α\in(1,2)$, $b\in\mathbb R^d$ for $q = (α-1)/d$ and $u_0 \in L^1(\mathbb R^d)$. We consider also $q > (α-1)/d$ under additional condition $u_0 \in L^\infty(\mathbb R^d)$. In both cases we assume $u_0\geq0$, which implies that the solution is non-negative. The estimates are given in the terms of the function $P_t u_0$, where $P_t$ is the stable semigroup operator.
The notion of Kruzhkov entropy solution was extended by the first author in 2007 to conservation laws with a fractional laplacian diffusion term; this notion led to well-posedness for the Cauchy problem in the $L^\infty$-framework. In the present paper, we further motivate the introduction of entropy solutions, showing that in the case of fractional diffusion of order strictly less than one, uniqueness of a weak solution may fail.
In this paper, we constuct the multi-point blowup solutions of self-similar type for the inviscid Burgers equation. The shape and blowup dynamics are precisely described. Moreover, the solutions we construct are stable under small perturbations on initial data restricted in a compact set.
In this paper, we explore a nonlocal inviscid Burgers equation. Fixing a parameter $h$, we prove existence and uniqueness of the local solution of the equation $\InviscidBurgersNonlocal{u}$ with periodic initial condition. We also explore the blow up properties of solutions to these kinds of equations with given periodic initial data, and show that there exists solutions that blow up in finite time and solutions that are globally regular. This contrasts with the classical inviscid Burgers equation, for which all non-constant smooth periodic initial data lead to finite time blow up. Finally, we…
This paper is devoted to the study of initial-boundary value problems for time-fractional analogues of Korteweg-de Vries, Benjamin-Bona-Mahony, Burgers, Rosenau, Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, Ostrovsky and time-fractional modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equations on a bounded domain. Sufficient conditions for the blowing-up of solutions in finite time of aforementioned equations are presented. We also discuss the maximum principle and influence of gradient non-linearity on the global solvability of initial-boundary value problems for the time-fractional Burgers equation. The main tool o…
This paper proves the existence of unstable shocks of the Burgers-Hilbert equation conjectured in arXiv:2006.05568. More precisely, we construct smooth initial data with finite $H^9$-norm such that the solution in self-similar coordinates is asymptotic to the first unstable solution to the self-similar inviscid Burgers equation. The blowup profile is a cusp with Hölder 1/5 continuity with explicit blowup time and location. Unlike the previously established stable shocks, the initial data cannot be taken in an open set; instead, we control the two unstable directions by Newton's iteration.
We study properties of solutions of the initial value problem for the nonlinear and nonlocal equation u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0 with alpha in (0,1], supplemented with an initial datum approaching the constant states u+/u- (u_-smaller than u_+) as x goes to +/-infty, respectively. It was shown by Karch, Miao & Xu (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 39 (2008), 1536--1549) that, for alpha in (1,2), the large time asymptotics of solutions is described by rarefaction waves. The goal of this paper is to show that the asymptotic profile of solutions changes for alpha \leq 1. If alpha=1, there exists a self…
Spatially periodic complex-valued solutions of the Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are studied in this paper. It is shown that for any sufficiently large time T, there exists an explicit initial data such that its corresponding solution of the Burgers equation blows up at T. In addition, the global convergence and regularity of series solutions is established for initial data satisfying mild conditions.
We consider Burgers equation with transverse viscosity $$\partial_tu+u\partial_xu-\partial_{yy}u=0, \ \ (x,y)\in \mathbb R^2, \ \ u:[0,T)\times \mathbb R^2\rightarrow \mathbb R.$$ We construct and describe precisely a family of solutions which become singular in finite time by having their gradient becoming unbounded. To leading order, the solution is given by a backward self-similar solution of Burgers equation along the $x$ variable, whose scaling parameters evolve according to parabolic equations along the $y$ variable, one of them being the quadratic semi-linear heat equation. We develop a…
The memory effects on microscopic kinetic systems have been sometimes modelled by means of the introduction of second order time derivatives in the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations. One prototypical example is the hyperbolic modification of the Burgers equation, that has been introduced to clarify the interplay of hyperbolicity and nonlinear hydrodynamic evolution. Previous studies suggested the finite time blow-up of this equation, and here we present a rigorous proof of this fact.
We study a formulation of Burgers equation on the Sierpinski gasket, which is the prototype of a p.c.f. self-similar fractal. One possibility is to implement Burgers equation as a semilinear heat equation associated with the Laplacian for scalar functions, just as on the unit interval. Here we propose a second, different formulation which follows from the Cole-Hopf transform and is associated with the Laplacian for vector fields. The difference between these two equations can be understood in terms of different vertex conditions for Laplacians on metric graphs. For the second formulation we sh…
The formation of singularities in finite time in non-local Burgers' equations, with time-fractional derivative, is studied in detail. The occurrence of finite time singularity is proved, revealing the underlying mechanism, and precise estimates on the blow-up time are provided. The employment of the present equation to model a problem arising in job market is also analyzed.
We consider a class of dispersive and dissipative perturbations of the inviscid Burgers equation, which includes the fractional KdV equation of order $α$, and the fractal Burgers equation of order $β$, where $α, β\in [0,1)$, and the Whitham equation. For all $α, β\in [0,1)$, we construct solutions whose gradient blows up at a point, and whose amplitude stays bounded, which therefore display a "shock-like" singularity. We moreover provide an asymptotic description of the blow-up. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first proof of gradient blow-up for the fKdV equation in the range $α\in [2/3…
We study the impact of the convective terms on the global solvability or finite time blow up of solutions of dissipative PDEs. We consider the model examples of 1D Burger's type equations, convective Cahn-Hilliard equation, generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and KdV type equations, we establish the following common scenario: adding sufficiently strong (in comparison with the destabilizing nonlinearity) convective terms to equation prevents the solutions from blowing up in finite time and makes the considered system globally well-posed and dissipative and for weak enough convective terms…
In this work, we examine the solution properties of the Burgers' equation with stochastic transport. First, we prove results on the formation of shocks in the stochastic equation and then obtain a stochastic Rankine-Hugoniot condition that the shocks satisfy. Next, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions in the inviscid case and construct a blow-up criterion. Finally, in the viscous case, we prove global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions.
We review some recent results for a class of fluid mechanics equations called active scalars, with fractional dissipation. Our main examples are the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, the Burgers equation, and the Cordoba-Cordoba-Fontelos model. We discuss nonlocal maximum principle methods which allow to prove existence of global regular solutions for the critical dissipation. We also recall what is known about the possibility of finite time blow up in the supercritical regime.
It is well known that the solutions to the non-viscous Burgers equation develop a gradient catastrophe at a critical time provided the initial data have a negative derivative in certain points. We consider this equation assuming that the particle paths in the medium are governed by a random process with a variance which depends in a polynomial way on the velocity. Given an initial distribution of the particles which is uniform in space and with the initial velocity linearly depending on the position we show both analytically and numerically that there exists a threshold effect: if the power in…
We show that solutions to the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system on ${\mathbb S}^1$ with critical fractional diffusion $(-Δ)^\frac{1}{2}$ remain smooth for any initial data and any positive time. This disproves, at least in the periodic setting, the large-data-blowup conjecture by Bournaveas and Calvez. As a tool, we show smoothness of solutions to a modified critical Burgers equation via a generalization of the method of moduli of continuity by Kiselev, Nazarov and Shterenberg. over a setting where the considered equation has no scaling. This auxiliary result may be interesting by itself.…
We consider a generalized Burger's equation (dtu = dxxu - udxu + up - λu)in a subdomain of R, under various boundary conditions. First, using some phase plane arguments, we study the existence of stationary solutions under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions and prove a bifurcation depending on the parameters. Then, we compare positive solutions of the parabolic equation with appropriate stationary solutions to prove that global existence can occur for the Dirichlet, the Neumann or the dissipative dynamical boundary conditions σdtu+dνu = 0. Finally, for many boundary conditions, global ex…
We consider the Langevin equation describing a stochastically perturbed by uniform noise non-viscous Burgers fluid and introduce a deterministic function that corresponds to the mean of the velocity when we keep the value of position fixed. We study interrelations between this function and the solution of the non-perturbed Burgers equation. Especially we are interested in the property of the solution of the latter equation to develop unbounded gradients within a finite time. We study the question how the initial distribution of particles for the Langevin equation influences this blowup phenome…
This study is motivated by the question of how singularity formation and other forms of extreme behavior in nonlinear dissipative partial differential equations are affected by stochastic excitations. To address this question we consider the 1D fractional Burgers equation with additive colored noise as a model problem. This system is interesting, because in the deterministic setting it exhibits finite-time blow-up or a globally well-posed behavior depending on the value of the fractional dissipation exponent. The problem is studied by performing a series of accurate numerical computations comb…
We give the first natural examples of Calderón-Zygmund operators in the theory of analysis on post-critically finite self-similar fractals. This is achieved by showing that the purely imaginary Riesz and Bessel potentials on nested fractals with 3 or more boundary points are of this type. It follows that these operators are bounded on $L^{p}$, $1<p<\infty$ and satisfy weak 1-1 bounds. The analysis may be extended to infinite blow-ups of these fractals, and to product spaces based on the fractal or its blow-up.
We consider the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation. We study sufficient conditions for blow-up of solutions and show the global existence with small initial data. Also we give some relations to the Burgers equation.
We consider the "convection-diffussion" equation $u_t=J*u-u-uu_x,$ where $J$ is a probability density. We supplement this equation with step-like initial conditions and prove a convergence of corresponding solution towards a rarefaction wave, i.e. a unique entropy solution of the Riemann problem for the nonviscous Burgers equation. Methods and tools used in this paper are inspired by those used in [Karch, Miao and Xu, SIAM J. Math. Anal. {\bf 39} (2008), no. 5, 1536--1549.], where the fractal Burgers equation was studied.
We discuss concepts and review results about the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation, which has also been called Burgers-Poisson equation in the literature. Our focus is on a comparison of various strong and weak solution concepts as well as on blow-up of strong solutions in the form of wave breaking. Along the way we add aspects regarding semiboundedness at blow-up, from semigroups of nonlinear operators to the Cauchy problem, and about continuous traveling waves as weak solutions.
In this note we study locally self-similar blow up for the Euler equation. The main result states that under a mild $L^p$-growth assumption on the profile $v$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^p dy \lesssim L^{\g}$ for some $\g <p-2$, the self-similar solution carries a positive amount of energy up to the time of blow-up $T$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^2 dy \sim L^{N-2\a}$. The result implies and extends several previously known exclusion criteria. It also supports a general conjecture relating fractal local dimensions of the energy measure with the rate of velocity growth at the time of pos…
We prove that the Burgers flow with a steady external forcing has a unique steady state which is a sink. Although this flow cannot be linearized through Cole-Hopf transforms, we prove that it has a convergent Koopman Modes decomposition. This gives an asymptotic formula for solutions of the Burgers equation with an external force. Time dependence and the coefficients of the decomposition are proved to be eigenvalues and eigenfunctionals of the Koopman operator. Convergence of the Koopman decomposition is proved for orbits close to the sink. The analysis of Burgers dynamical system relies on th…
We prove a strong maximum principle for Schrödinger operators defined on a class of fractal sets and their blowups without boundary. Our primary interest is in weaker regularity conditions than have previously appeared in the literature; in particular we permit both the fractal Laplacian and the potential to be Radon measures on the fractal. As a consequence of our results, we establish a Harnack inequality for solutions of these operators.
Katz and Pavlovic recently proposed a dyadic model of the Euler equations for which they proved finite time blow-up in the $H^{3/2+ε}$ Sobolev norm. It is shown that their model can be reduced to the dyadic inviscid Burgers equation where nonlinear interactions are restricted to dyadic wavenumbers. The inviscid Burgers equation exhibits finite time blow-up in $H^α$, for $α\ge 1/2$, but its dyadic restriction is even more singular, exhibiting blow-up for any $α> 0$. Friedlander and Pavlovic developed a closely related model for which they also prove finite time blow-up in $H^{3/2+ε}$. Some inco…
In this paper we study the Burgers equation with a nonlocal term of the form $Hu$ where $H$ is the Hilbert transform. This system has been considered as a quadratic approximation for the dynamics of a free boundary of a vortex patch. We prove blow up in finite time for a large class of initial data with finite energy. Considering a more general nonlocal term, of the form $Λ^αHu$ for $0<α< 1$, finite time singularity formation is also shown.
This paper studies the transport of a mass $μ$ in $\real^d, d \geq 2,$ by a flow field $v= -\nabla K*μ$. We focus on kernels $K=|x|^α/ α$ for $2-d\leq α<2$ for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range This paper studies the transport of a mass $μ$ in $\real^d, d \geq 2,$ by a flow field $v= -\nabla K*μ$. We focus on kernels $K=|x|^α/ α$ for $2-d\leq α<2$ for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range we prove the existence for all time of radially symmetric measure solutions that are monotone …
We study several variants of the classical Sierpinski Carpet (SC) fractal. The main examples we call infinite magic carpets (IMC), obtained by taking an infinite blowup of a discrete graph approximation to SC and identifying edges using torus, Klein bottle or projective plane type identifications. We use both theoretical and experimental methods. We prove estimates for the size of metric balls that are close to optimal. We obtain numerical approximations to the spectrum of the graph Laplacian on IMC and to solutions of the associated differential equations: Laplace equation, heat equation and …

This investigation is a part of a research program aiming to characterize the extreme behavior possible in hydrodynamic models by analyzing the maximum growth of certain fundamental quantities. We consider here the rate of growth of the classical and fractional enstrophy in the fractional Burgers equation in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Since solutions to this equation exhibit, respectively, globally well-posed behavior and finite-time blow-up in these two regimes, this makes it a useful model to study the maximum instantaneous growth of enstrophy possible in these two distinct s…
In light of the question of finite-time blow-up vs. global well-posedness of solutions to problems involving nonlinear partial differential equations, we provide several cautionary examples which indicate that modifications to the boundary conditions or to the nonlinearity of the equations can effect whether the equations develop finite-time singularities. In particular, we aim to underscore the idea that in analytical and computational investigations of the blow-up of three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, the boundary conditions may need to be taken into greater account. We als…
We develop techniques to capture the effect of transport on the long-term dynamics of small, localized initial data in nonlinearly coupled reaction-diffusion-advection equations on the real line. It is well-known that quadratic or cubic nonlinearities in such systems can lead to growth of small, localized initial data and even finite time blow-up. We show that, if the components exhibit different velocities, then quadratic or cubic mix-terms, i.e. terms with nontrivial contributions from both components, are harmless. We establish global existence and diffusive Gaussian-like decay for exponent…
In this paper we prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of stochastic fractional partial differential equations driven by multiplicative noise. We also establish that for this class of equations adding linear multiplicative noise provides a regularizing effect: the solutions will not blow up with high probability if the initial data is sufficiently small, or if the noise coefficient is sufficiently large. As applications our main results are applied to various types of SPDE such as stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, stochastic fractional Burgers equation, stoch…
We prove a global well-posedness and regularity result of strong solutions to a slightly modified Michelson-Sivashinsky equation in any spatial dimension and in the absence of physical boundaries. Local-in-time well-posedness (and regularity) in the space $W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is established and is shown to be global if in addition the initial data is either periodic or vanishes at infinity. The proof of the latter result utilizes ideas previously introduced by Kiselev, Nazarov, Volberg and Shterenberg to handle the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation and the criti…
In this article we study a class of stochastic functional differential equations driven by Lévy processes (in particular, $α$-stable processes), and obtain the existence and uniqueness of Markov solutions in small time intervals. This corresponds to the local solvability to a class of quasi-linear partial integro-differential equations. Moreover, in the constant diffusion coefficient case, without any assumptions on the Lévy generator, we also show the existence of a unique maximal weak solution for a class of semi-linear partial integro-differential equation systems under bounded Lipschitz as…
In this paper we develop a new approach to nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with Gaussian noise. Our aim is to provide an abstract framework which is applicable to a large class of SPDEs and includes many important cases of nonlinear parabolic problems which are of quasi- or semilinear type. This first part is on local existence and well-posedness. A second part in preparation is on blow-up criteria and regularization. Our theory is formulated in an $L^p$-setting, and because of this we can deal with nonlinearities in a very efficient way. Applications to several concrete pr…
