Bhargava proved a formula for counting, with certain weights, degree n etale extensions of a local field, or equivalently, local Galois representations to S_n. This formula is motivation for his conjectures about the density of discriminants of S_n-number fields. We prove there are analogous ``mass formulas'' that count local Galois representations to any group that can be formed from symmetric groups by wreath products and cross products, corresponding to counting towers and direct sums of etale extensions. We obtain as a corollary that the above mentioned groups have rational character tables. Our result implies that D_4 has a mass formula for certain weights, but we show that D_4 does not have a mass formula when the local Galois representations to D_4 are weighted in the same way as representations to S_4 are weighted in Bhargava's mass formula.
Let $G$ be a wreath product of the form $C_2 \wr H$, where $C_2$ is the cyclic group of order 2. Under mild conditions for $H$ we determine the asymptotic behavior of the counting functions for number fields $K/k$ with Galois group $G$ and bounded discriminant. Those counting functions grow linearly with the norm of the discriminant and this result coincides with a conjecture of Malle. Up to a constant factor these groups have the same asymptotic behavior as the conjectured one for symmetric groups.
We give a complete description of the arboreal Galois representation of a certain postcritically finite cubic polynomial over a large class of number fields and for a large class of basepoints. This is the first such example that is not conjugate to a power map, Chebyshev polynomial, or Lattès map. The associated Galois action on an infinite ternary rooted tree has Hausdorff dimension bounded strictly between that of the infinite wreath product of cyclic groups and that of the infinite wreath product of symmetric groups. We deduce a zero-density result for prime divisors in an orbit under this…
We prove that the arboreal Galois representations attached to certain unicritical polynomials have finite index in an infinite wreath product of cyclic groups, and we prove surjectivity for some small degree examples, including a new family of quadratic polynomials. To do this, we use a combination of local techniques including the Chabauty-Coleman method and the Mordell-Weil sieve.
We consider a large class of so-called dynamical Belyi maps and study the Galois groups of iterates of such maps. From the combinatorial invariants of the maps, we construct a useful presentation of their Galois groups as subgroups of automorphism groups of regular trees, in terms of iterated wreath products. This allows us to study the behavior of the monodromy groups under specialization of the maps, and to derive applications to dynamical sequences.
Let $φ_p(z)=(z-1)^p+2-ζ_p$, where $ζ_p\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity for some odd prime $p$. Building on previous work, we show that the $n$-th iterate $φ_p^n(z)$ has Galois group $[C_p]^n$, an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups, whenever $p$ is not a Wieferich prime.
We obtain strong information on the asymptotic behaviour of the counting function for nilpotent Galois extensions with bounded discriminant of arbitrary number fields. This extends previous investigations for the case of abelian groups. In particular, the result confirms a conjecture by the second author on this function for arbitrary groups in the nilpotent case. We further prove compatibility of the conjecture with taking wreath products with the cyclic group of order 2 and give examples in degree up to 8.
Let $K$ be a global function field and let $ϕ\in K[x]$. For all wandering basepoints $b\in K$, we show that there is a bound on the size of the elements of the dynamical Zsigmondy set $\mathcal{Z}(ϕ,b)$ that depends only on $ϕ$, the poles of the $b$, and $K$. Moreover, when we order $b\in\mathcal{O}_{K,S}$ by height, we show that $\mathcal{Z}(ϕ,b)$ is empty on average. As an application, we prove that the inverse limit of the Galois groups of iterates of $ϕ(x)=x^d+f$ is a finite index subgroup of an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups. Finally, we establish similar results on Zsigmondy se…
In 1985, Odoni showed that in characteristic $0$ the Galois group of the $n$-th iterate of the generic polynomial with degree $d$ is as large as possible. That is, he showed that this Galois group is the $n$-th wreath power of the symmetric group $S_d$. We generalize this result to positive characteristic, as well as to the generic rational function. These results can be applied to prove certain density results in number theory, two of which are presented here. This work was partially completed by the late R.W.K. Odoni in an unpublished paper.
We use new over-convergent p-adic exponential power series, inspired by work of Pulita, to build self-dual normal basis generators for the square root of the inverse different of certain abelian weakly ramified extensions of an unramified extension K of Qp. These extensions, whose set we denote by M, are the degree p subextensions over K of Mp,2, the maximal abelian totally, wildly and weakly ramified extension of K, whose norm group contains p. Our construction follows Pickett's, who dealt with the same set M of extensions of K, but does not depend on the choice of a basis of the residue fiel…
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth, irreducible curve defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. Let $f\in K[x]$ be of the form $f(x)=x^q+c$ where $q = p^{r}, r \ge 1,$ is a power of the prime number $p$, and let $β\in \overline{K}$. For all $n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$, the Galois groups $G_n(β)=\mathop{\rm{Gal}}(K(f^{-n}(β))/K(β))$ embed into $[C_q]^n$, the $n$-fold wreath product of the cyclic group $C_q$. We show that if $f$ is not isotrivial, then $[[C_q]^\infty:G_\infty(β)]<\infty$ unless $β$ is postcritical or periodic. We are also able to prove that if $f_1(x)=x^q+c_1$ and $f_2(x)=…
The fact that the double zeta values at n and m can be written as a sum of products of two zeta values and of zeta value at m+n, whenever n+m is odd is due to Euler. We shall show a weak version of this result for the Galois l-adic realization.
Bhargava has given a formula, derived from a formula of Serre, computing a certain count of extensions of a local field, weighted by conductor and by number of automorphisms. We interpret this result as a counting formula for permutation representations of the absolute Galois group of the local field, then speculate on variants of this formula in which the role of the symmetric group is played by other groups. We prove an analogue of Bhargava's formula for representations into a Weyl group in the B_n series, which suggests a link with integration on p-adic groups. We also obtain analogous posi…
By Langlands and Deligne we know that the local constants are extendible functions. Therefore, to give an explicit formula of the local constant of an induced representation of a local Galois group of a non-Archimedean local field $F$ of characteristic zero, we have to compute the lambda function $λ_{K/F}$ for a finite extension $K/F$. In this paper, when a finite extension $K/F$ is Galois, we give a formula for $λ_{K/F}$.
The goal of this paper is to provide a refinement of a formula proved by the first author which expresses some critical values of automorphic $L$-functions on unitary groups as Petersson norms of automorphic forms. Here we provide a Galois equivariant version of the formula. We also give some applications to special values of automorphic representations of $\GL_{n}\times\GL_{1}$. We show that our results are compatible with Deligne's conjecture.
We prove the existence of Euler systems for adjoint modular Galois representations using deformations of Galois representations coming from Hilbert modular forms and relate them to $p$-adic $L$-functions under a conjectural formula for the Fitting ideals of some equivariant congruence modules for abelian base change.
In \cite{S}, Shyr derived an analogue of Dirichlet's class number formula for arithmetic Tori. We use this formula to derive a Brauer-Siegel formula for Tori, relating the Discriminant of a torus to the product of its regulator and class number. We apply this formula to derive asymptotics and lower bounds for Galois orbits of CM points in the Siegel modular variety $A_{g,1}$. Specifically, we ask that the sizes of these orbits grows like a power of Discriminant of the underlying endomorphism algebra. We prove this unconditionally in the case $g\leq 5$, and for all $g$ under the Generalized Rie…
We generalize the Chebotarev density formulas of Dawsey (2017) and Alladi (1977) to the setting of arbitrary finite Galois extensions of number fields $L/K$. In particular, if $C \subset G = \textrm{Gal}(L/K)$ is a conjugacy class, then we establish that the Chebotarev density is the following limit of partial sums of ideals of $K$: \[ -\lim_{X\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{\substack{2\leq N(I)\leq X \\ I \in S(L/K; C)}} \frac{μ_K(I)}{N(I)} = \frac{|C|}{|G|}, \] where $μ_K(I)$ denotes the generalized Möbius function and $S(L/K;C)$ is the set of ideals $I\subset \mathcal{O}_K$ such that $I$ has a uni…
The ghost conjecture, formulated by this article's authors, predicts the list of p-adic valuations of the non-zero p-th eigenvalues ("slopes") for overconvergent p-adic modular eigenforms in terms of the Newton polygon of an easy-to-describe power series (the "ghost series"). The prediction is restricted to eigenforms whose Galois representation modulo p is reducible on a decomposition group at p. It has been discovered, however, that the conjecture is not formulated correctly. Here we explain the issue and propose a salvage.
We formulate a notion of purity for $p$-adic big Galois representations and pseudorepresentations of Weil groups of $\ell$-adic number fields for $\ell\neq p$. This is obtained by showing that all powers of the monodromy of any big Galois representation stay "as large as possible" under pure specializations. The role of purity for families in the study of the variation of local Euler factors, local automorphic types along irreducible components, the intersection points of irreducible components of $p$-adic families of automorphic Galois representations is illustrated using the examples of Hida…
We can associate local constant to every continuous finite dimensional complex representation of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of a non-archimedean local field $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ by Deligne and Langlands. To give explicit formula of local constant of a representation, we need to compute $λ$-functions explicitly. In this thesis we compute $λ_{K/F}$ explicitly, where $K/F$ is a finite degree Galois extension of a non-archimedean local field $F$, except when $K/F$ is a wildly ramified quadratic extension with $F\ne\mathbb{Q}_2$. Then by using this $λ$-function computation, in general, we give an …

We call a (q-1)-th Kummer extension of a cyclotomic function field a quasi-cyclotomic function field if it is Galois, but non-abelian, over the rational function field with the constant field of q elements. In this paper, we determine the structure of the Galois groups of a kind of quasi-cyclotomic function fields over the base field. We also give the genus formulae of them.
We give an exact formula for the number of $G$-extensions of local function fields $\mathbb{F}_q((t))$ for finite abelian groups $G$ up to a conductor bound. As an application we give a lower bound for the corresponding counting problem by discriminant.
We prove very general index formulae for integral Galois modules, specifically for units in rings of integers of number fields, for higher K-groups of rings of integers, and for Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves over number fields. These formulae link the respective Galois module structure to other arithmetic invariants, such as class numbers, or Tamagawa numbers and Tate-Shafarevich groups. This is a generalisation of known results on units to other Galois modules and to many more Galois groups, and at the same time a unification of the approaches hitherto developed in the case of units.
In this article we prove a local Riemman-Hurwitz formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between formal germs of p-adic curves and which generalises the formula proven by the first author in the case of Galois covers of degree p. We also investigate the problem of the existence of a torsor structure for a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between p-adic schemes.
We give a new formula for the Chebotarev densities of Frobenius elements in Galois groups. This formula is given in terms of smallest prime factors $p_{\mathrm{min}}(n)$ of integers $n\geq2$. More precisely, let $C$ be a conjugacy class of the Galois group of some finite Galois extension $K$ of $\mathbb{Q}$. Then we prove that $$-\lim_{X\rightarrow\infty}\sum_{\substack{2\leq n\leq X\\[1pt]\left[\frac{K/\mathbb{Q}}{p_{\mathrm{min}}(n)}\right]=C}}\frac{μ(n)}{n}=\frac{\#C}{\#G}.$$ This theorem is a generalization of a result of Alladi from 1977 that asserts that largest prime divisors $p_{\mathr…
We study the trace form $q_L$ of $G$-Galois algebras $L/K$ when $G$ is a finite group and $K$ is a field of characteristic different from $2$. We introduce in this paper the category of $2$-reduced groups and, when $G$ is such a group, we use a formula of Serre to compute the second Hasse-Witt invariant of $q_L$. By combining this computation with work of Quillen we determine the isometry class of $q_L$ for large families of $G$-Galois algebras over global fields. We also indicate how our results generalize to Galois $G$-covers of schemes.
Using the theory of Newton Polygons, we formulate a simple criterion for the Galois group of a polynomial to be ``large.'' For a fixed $α\in \Q - \Z_{<0}$, Filaseta and Lam have shown that the $n$th degree Generalized Laguerre Polynomial $L_n^{(α)}(x) = \sum_{j=0}^n \binom{n+α}{n-j}(-x)^j/j!$ is irreducible for all large enough $n$. We use our criterion to show that, under these conditions, the Galois group of $\La$ is either the alternating or symmetric group on $n$ letters, generalizing results of Schur for $α=0,1$.
We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Usi…
Let K/F be a finite Galois extension of global fields with Galois group G and let M be a 1-motive over F. We discuss the kernel and cokernel of the restriction map Sha^{i}(F,M) --> Sha^{i}(K,M)^{G} for i=1 and 2, independently of any finiteness hypotheses. We show that these groups are finite and obtain, in particular, formulas for the corresponding quotient of group orders.
We prove the explicit version of the Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture formulated by Diamond--Dembélé--Roberts. More precisely, we prove that it is equivalent to the original Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture, which was proved for odd primes (under a mild Taylor--Wiles hypothesis) in earlier work of the third author and coauthors.
A well-known formula of Whipple relates certain hypergeometric values $_7F_6(1)$ and $_4F_3(1)$. In this paper we revisit this relation from the viewpoint of the underlying hypergeometric data $HD$, to which there are also associated hypergeometric character sums and Galois representations. We explain a special structure behind Whipple's formula when the hypergeometric data $HD$ are primitive and self-dual. If the data are also defined over $\mathbb Q$, by the work of Katz, Beukers, Cohen, and Mellit, there are compatible families of $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of …
Let $ L/K $ be a finite separable extension of fields whose Galois closure $ E/K $ has group $ G $. Greither and Pareigis have used Galois descent to show that a Hopf algebra giving a Hopf-Galois structure on $ L/K $ has the form $ E[N]^{G} $ for some group $ N $ such that $ |N|=[L:K] $. We formulate criteria for two such Hopf algebras to be isomorphic as Hopf algebras, and provide a variety of examples. In the case that the Hopf algebras in question are commutative, we also determine criteria for them to be isomorphic as $ K $-algebras. By applying our results, we complete a detailed analysis…
Frobenius Traces for Rank-2 Drinfeld Modules, Higher-Dimensional Galois Representations, and a Strong Multiplicity One Theorem in Positive Characteristic
We can attach a local constant to every finite dimensional continuous complex representation of a local Galois group of a non-archimedean local field $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ by Deligne and Langlands. Tate \cite{JT1} gives an explicit formula for computing local constants for linear characters of $F^\times$, but there is no explicit formula of local constant for any arbitrary representation of a local Galois group. In this article we study Heisenberg representations of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of $F$ and give invariant formulas of local constants for Heisenberg representations of dimension prim…
Let $F$ be a number field and let $i\geq 2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the positive étale wild kernel $\mathrm{WK}^{\mbox{ét},+}_{2i-2}F$, which is the twisted analogue of the $2$-primary part of the narrow class group. If $E/F$ is a Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$, we prove a genus formula relating the order of the groups $ (\mathrm{WK}^{\mbox{ét},+}_{2i-2}E)_{G}$ and $\mathrm{WK}^{\mbox{ét},+}_{2i-2}F$.
In 1987 Serre conjectured that any mod l ("ell", not "1") two-dimensional irreducible odd representation of the absolute Galois group of the rationals came from a modular form in a precise way. We present a generalisation of this conjecture to 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field where l is unramified. The hard work is in formulating an analogue of the "weight" part of Serre's conjecture. Serre furthermore asked whether his conjecture could be rephrased in terms of a "mod l Langlands philosophy". Using ideas of Emerton and Vigneras, we formulate a …
We formulate a Serre-type conjecture for n-dimensional Galois representations that are tamely ramified at p. The weights are predicted using a representation-theoretic recipe. For n = 3 some of these weights were not predicted by the previous conjecture of Ash, Doud, Pollack, and Sinnott. Computational evidence for these extra weights is provided by calculations of Doud and Pollack. We obtain theoretical evidence for n = 4 using automorphic inductions of Hecke characters.
We estimate several probability distributions arising from the study of random, monic polynomials of degree $n$ with coefficients in the integers of a general $p$-adic field $K_{\mathfrak{p}}$ having residue field with $q= p^f$ elements. We estimate the distribution of the degrees of irreducible factors of the polynomials, with tight error bounds valid when $q> n^2+n$. We also estimate the distribution of Galois groups of such polynomials, showing that for fixed $n$, almost all Galois groups are cyclic in the limit $q \to \infty$. In particular, we show that the Galois groups are cyclic with p…
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of $D_4$ quartic extensions of a function field with discriminant equal to some bound, essentially reproducing the analogous result over number fields due Cohen, Diaz y Diaz, and Olivier, but with a stronger error term. We also study the relative density of $D_4$ and $S_4$ quartic extensions of a function field and show that with mild conditions, the number of $D_4$ quartic extensions can far exceed the number of $S_4$ quartic extensions
We use Massey products and their relations to unipotent representations to parametrize and find an explicit formula for the number of Galois extensions of a given local field with the prescribed Galois group ${\mathbb U}_4({\mathbb F}_p)$ consisting of unipotent four by four matrices over ${\mathbb F}_p$. Further applications of this method involve the counting of certain Galois extensions with restricted ramifications, and counting the numbers of Galois ${\mathbb U}_4({\mathbb F}_p)$-extensions of some other fields. For each Demushkin pro-$p$-group, we find a very simple version of the condit…
Let $K$ be a $p$-adic local field. In this work we study a special kind of $p$-adic Galois representations of it. These representations are similar to the Galois representations occurred in the exceptional zero conjecture for modular forms. In particular, we verify that a formula of Colmez can be generalized to our case. We also include a degenerated version of Colmez's formula.
In our previous study of duality for complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue field, we treated coefficients in finite flat group schemes. In this paper, we treat abelian varieties. This in particular implies Grothendieck's conjecture on the perfectness of his pairing between the Neron component groups of an abelian variety and its dual. The point is that our formulation is well-suited with Galois descent. From the known case of semistable abelian varieties, we deduce the perfectness in full generality. We also treat coefficients in tori and, more generally, 1-motives.
Using the overconvergent cohomology modules introduced by Ash and Stevens, we construct eigenvarieties associated with reductive groups and establish some basic geometric properties of these spaces, building on work of Ash-Stevens, Urban, and others. We also formulate a precise modularity conjecture linking trianguline Galois representations with overconvergent cohomology classes. In the course of giving evidence for this conjecture, we establish several new instances of \emph{p-}adic Langlands functoriality. Our main technical innovations are a family of universal coefficients spectral sequen…

Let p be a prime and F a field containing a primitive pth root of unity. Then for n in N, the cohomological dimension of the maximal pro-p-quotient G of the absolute Galois group of F is <=n if and only if the corestriction maps H^n(H,Fp) -> H^n(G,Fp) are surjective for all open subgroups H of index p. Using this result we derive a surprising generalization to dim_Fp H^n(H,Fp) of Schreier's formula for dim_Fp H^1(H,Fp).
