Let p be a prime and F a field containing a primitive pth root of unity. Then for n in N, the cohomological dimension of the maximal pro-p-quotient G of the absolute Galois group of F is <=n if and only if the corestriction maps H^n(H,Fp) -> H^n(G,Fp) are surjective for all open subgroups H of index p. Using this result we derive a surprising generalization to dim_Fp H^n(H,Fp) of Schreier's formula for dim_Fp H^1(H,Fp).
Let $q=p^s$ be a prime power, $F$ a field containing a root of unity of order $q$, and $G_F$ its absolute Galois group. We determine a new canonical quotient $\mathrm{Gal}(F_{(3)}/F)$ of $G_F$ which encodes the full mod-$q$ cohomology ring $H^*(G_F,\mathbb{Z}/q)$ and is minimal with respect to this property. We prove some fundamental structure theorems related to these quotients. In particular, it is shown that when $q=p$ is an odd prime, $F_{(3)}$ is the compositum of all Galois extensions $E$ of $F$ such that $\mathrm{Gal}(E/F)$ is isomorphic to $\{1\}$, $\mathbb{Z}/p$ or to the nonabelian g…
We define degree two cohomological invariants for G-Galois algebras over fields of characteristic not 2, and use them to give necessary conditions for the existence of a self--dual normal basis. In some cases, we show that these conditions are also sufficient.
Let p be a prime and F a field containing a primitive pth root of unity. Let E/F be a cyclic extension of degree p and G_E < G_F the associated absolute Galois groups. We determine precise conditions for the cohomology group H^n(E)=H^n(G_E,Fp) to be free or trivial as an Fp[Gal(E/F)]-module. We examine when these properties for H^n(E) are inherited by H^k(E), k>n, and, by analogy with cohomological dimension, we introduce notions of cohomological freeness and cohomological triviality. We give examples of H^n(E) free or trivial for each n in N with prescribed cohomological dimension.
We give a criterion for the cohomological dimension of a field, involving norm maps on Milnor K-theory; this criterion was originally formulated by Kato. The theorem we prove is a generalization of a theorem in Serre's book on Galois cohomology.
Assuming the Bloch-Kato Conjecture, we determine precise conditions under which Hilbert 90 is valid for Milnor k-theory and Galois cohomology. In particular, Hilbert 90 holds for degree n when the cohomological dimension of the Galois group of the maximal p-extension of F is at most n.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of equal characteristic $p>0$. Given a $\mathbb{Z}/p$-Galois cover of a formal disc over $R$, one can derive from it a semi-stable model for which the specializations of branch points are distinct and lie in the smooth locus of the special fiber. The description leads to a combinatorial object which resembles a classical Hurwitz tree in mixed characteristic, which we will give the same name. The existence of a Hurwitz tree is necessary for the existence of a $\mathbb{Z}/p$-cover whose branching data fit into that tree. We show that the conditions i…
We remove the assumption "let p be odd or k totally imaginary" from several well-known theorems in Galois cohomology of number fields. For example, we show that the Galois group of the maximal extension of a number field k which is unramified outside 2 has a finite cohomological 2-dimension (also if k has real places). (The dvi-file requires the xypic-package)
In this paper we generalize the work of Harris-Soudry-Taylor and construct the compatible systems of two-dimensional Galois representations attached to cuspidal automorphic representations of cohomological type on GL_2 over a CM field with a suitable condition on their central characters. We also prove a local-global compatibility statement, up to semisimplification.
We present several constraints on the absolute Galois groups G_F of fields F containing a primitive pth root of unity, using restrictions on the cohomology of index p normal subgroups from a previous paper by three of the authors. We first classify all maximal p-elementary abelian-by-order p quotients of such G_F. In the case p>2, each such quotient contains a unique closed index p elementary abelian subgroup. This seems to be the first case in which one can completely classify nontrivial quotients of absolute Galois groups by characteristic subgroups of normal subgroups. We then derive analog…
Let l be an odd prime and K/k a Galois extension of totally real number fields with Galois group G such that K/k_\infty and k/Q are finite. We give a full description of the algebraic structure of the semisimple algebra QG=Quot(ΛG) for pro-l Galois groups G with ΛG = Z_l[[G]] the Iwasawa algebra. We moreover compute the cohomological dimension of the centres of the Wedderburn components of QG and state some results on the completion of QG.
We classify all cubic function fields over any finite field, particularly developing a complete Galois theory which includes those cases when the constant field is missing certain roots of unity. In doing so, we find criteria which allow one to easily read ramification and splitting data from the generating equation, in analogy to the known theory for Artin-Schreier and Kummer extensions. We also describe explicit irreducibility criteria, integral bases, and Galois actions in terms of canonical generating equations.

Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also …
For every number field and every Cartan Killing type, there is an associated split simple algebraic group. We examine whether the corresponding arithmetic subgroups are profinitely solitary so that the commensurability class of the profinite completion determines the commensurability class of the group among finitely generated residually finite groups. Assuming Grothendieck rigidity, we essentially solve the problem by Galois cohomological means.
Let X be a homogeneous space, X = G/H, where G is a connected linear algebraic group over a number field k, and H is a k-subgroup of G (not necessarily connected). Let S be a finite set of places of k. We compute the Brauer-Manin obstruction to weak approximation for X in S in terms of Galois cohomology.
We give a simple characterization of the totally wild ramified valuations in a Galois extension of fields of characteristic p. This criterion involves the valuations of Artin-Schreier cosets of the F_{p^r}^\times-translation of a single element. We apply the criterion to construct some interesting examples.
Suppose $K$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ containing a $p^M$-th primitive root of unity. For $1\leqslant s<p$ denote by $K[s,M]$ the maximal $p$-extension of $K$ with the Galois group of period $p^M$ and nilpotent class $s$. We apply the nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory together with the theory of the field-of-norms functor to give an explicit description of the Galois groups ${Gal}(K[s,M]/K)$. As application we prove that the ramification subgroup $Γ^{(v)}_K$ of the absolute Galois group of $K$ acts trivially on $K[s,M]$ if and only if $v>e_K(M+s/(p-1))-(1-δ_{1s})/p$, where $e_K$ is …
Let $π$ be a cuspidal, cohomological automorphic representation of an inner form $G$ of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ over a number field $F$ of arbitrary signature. Further, let $\mathfrak{p}$ be a prime of $F$ such that $G$ is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and the local component $π_\mathfrak{p}$ of $π$ at $\mathfrak{p}$ is the Steinberg representation. Assuming that the representation is non-critical at $\mathfrak{p}$ we construct automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariants for the representation $π$. If the number field $F$ is totally real, we show that these automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariants agree with the Font…
For a prime number $p$, we give a new restriction on pro-$p$ groups $G$ which are realizable as the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group $G_F(p)$ for a field $F$ containing a root of unity of order $p$. This restriction arises from Kummer Theory and the structure of the maximal $p$-radical extension of $F$. We study it in the abstract context of pro-$p$ groups $G$ with a continuous homomorphism $θ\colon G\to1+p\mathbb{Z}_p$, and characterize it cohomologically, and in terms of 1-cocycles on $G$. This is used to produce new examples of pro-$p$ groups which do not occur as maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups …
In this paper we investigate the cohomological obstruction for the field of moduli of a $G$-cover to be a field of definition, in the case of local fields and covers with tame admissible reduction. This applies in particular to $p$-adic fields where $p$ does not divide the order of the group $G$. We give examples of $G$-covers with field of moduli $\QQ_p$ that cannot be defined over $\QQ_p$, for all primes $p>5$.

Given a finite group G and a number field k, a well-known conjecture asserts that the set R_t(k,G) of Steinitz classes of tame G-Galois extensions of k is a subgroup of the ideal class group of k. In this paper we investigate an explicit candidate for R_t(k,G), when G is of odd order. More precisely, we define a subgroup W(k,G) of the class group of k and we prove that R_t(k,G) is contained in W(k,G). We show that equality holds for all groups of odd order for which a description of R_t(k,G) is known so far. Furthermore, by refining techniques introduced in arXiv:0910.5080v1, we use the Shafar…
Suppose $\mathcal K$ is $N$-dimensional local field of characteristic $p$, $\mathcal G =\mathop{Gal}(\mathcal K_{sep}/\mathcal K)$, $\mathcal G_{<p}$ is the maximal quotient of $\mathcal G$ of period $p$ and nilpotent class $<p$ and $\mathcal K_{<p}\subset \mathcal K_{sep}$ is such that $\mathop{Gal}(\mathcal K_{<p}/\mathcal K)=\mathcal G_{<p}$. We use nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory to identify $\mathcal G_{<p}$ with the group $G(\mathcal L)$ obtained from a profinite Lie $\mathbb F_p$-algebra $\mathcal L$ via the Campbell-Hausdorff composition law. The canonical $\mathcal P$-topology on $\ma…
Let $N/K$ be a Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. The equivariant local $ε$-constant conjecture $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K, V)$ is related to the compatibility of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture with the functional equation of Artin $L$-functions and it can be formulated as the vanishing of a certain element $R_{N/K}$ in $K_0(\mathbb Z_p[G],\mathbb Q_p^c[G])$. One of the main technical difficulties in the computation of $R_{N/K}$ arises from the so-called cohomological term $C_{N/K}$, which requires th…
This paper proves local-global principles for Galois cohomology groups over function fields $F$ of curves that are defined over a complete discretely valued field. We show in particular that such principles hold for $H^n(F, Z/mZ(n-1))$, for all $n>1$. This is motivated by work of Kato and others, where such principles were shown in related cases for $n=3$. Using our results in combination with cohomological invariants, we obtain local-global principles for torsors and related algebraic structures over $F$. Our arguments rely on ideas from patching as well as the Bloch-Kato conjecture.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $K$ above $p$. If $K_{\infty}/K$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension such that $E(K_{\infty})[p^{\infty}]$ is finite and $H^2(G_S(K_{\infty}), E[p^{\infty}])=0$, then we prove that the $Λ$-torsion subgroup of the Pontryagin dual of $\text{Sel}_{p^{\infty}}(E/K_{\infty})$ is pseudo-isomorphic to the Pontryagin dual of the fine Selmer group of $E$ over $K_{\infty}$. This is the Galois-cohomological analog of a flat-cohomological result of Wingberg.
We consider questions in Galois cohomology which arise by considering mod $p$ Galois representations arising from automorphic forms. We consider a Galois cohomological analog for the standard heuristics about the distribution of Wieferich primes, i.e. prime $p$ such that $2^{p-1}$ is 1 mod $p^2$. Our analog relates to asking if in a compatible system of Galois representations, for almost all primes $p$, the residual mod $p$ representation arising from it has unobstructed deformation theory. This analog leads in particular to formulating a mod $p$ analog for almost all primes $p$ of the classic…
The aim of this paper is to extend some arithmetic results on elliptic modular forms to the case of Hilbert modular forms. Among these results let's mention : (1) the control of the image of the Galois representation modulo $p$, (2) Hida's congruence criterion outside an explicit set of primes $p$, and (3) the freeness of the integral cohomology of the Hilbert modular variety over certain local components of the Hecke algebra and the Gorenstein property of these local algebras. We study the arithmetic of the Hilbert modular forms by studying their modulo $p$ Galois representations and our main…
Let E be a CM number field, F its maximal totally real subfield, c the generator of Gal(E/F), p an odd prime totally split in E, and S a finite set of places of E containing the places above p. Let r : G_{E,S} --> GL_3(F_p^bar) be a modular, absolutely irreducible, Galois representation of type U(3), i.e. such that r^* = r^c, and let X(r) be the rigid analytic generic fiber of its universal G_{E,S}-deformation of type U(3). We show that each irreducible component of the Zariski-closure of the modular points in X(r) has dimension at least 6[F:Q]. We study an analogue of the infinite fern of Gou…
Let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of local fields of characteristic $0$ with Galois group $G$. If $\mathcal{F}$ is a formal group over the ring of integers in $K$, one can associate to $\mathcal F$ and each positive integer $n$ a $G$-module $F_L^n$ which as a set is the $n$-th power of the maximal ideal of the ring of integers in $L$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient conditions under which $F_L^n$ is a cohomologically trivial $G$-module. This has applications to elliptic curves over local fields and to ray class groups of number fields.
We investigate the Galois group $G_S(p)$ of the maximal $p$-extension unramified outside a finite $S$ of primes of a number field in the (tame) case, when no prime dividing $p$ is in $S$. We show that the cohomology of $G_S(p)$ is 'often' isomorphic to the etale cohomology of the scheme $\Spec(Ø_k \sm S)$, in particular, $G_S(p)$ is of cohomological dimension~2 then.
We show that the l-adic realizations of certain Picard 1-motives associated to a G-Galois cover of smooth, projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field are G-cohomologically trivial, for all primes l. In the process, we generalize a well-known theorem of Nakajima on the Galois module structure of certain spaces of Kahler differentials associated to the top curve of the cover, assuming that the field of definition is of characteristic p. If the cover and the Picard 1-motive are defined over a finite field and if G is abelian, we compute the first Fitting ideal of each l-adic rea…
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $p$ an odd prime number such that the $p$-rank of the class group of $k$ is one. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $k$ distinct from $p$-adic places. We give sufficient conditions for the Galois group $G_S$, of the maximal pro-$p$-extension of $k$ which is unramified outside $S$, to be \textit{mild}, hence of cohomological dimension $2$.
Let f: S' --> S be a finite and faithfully flat morphism of locally noetherian schemes of constant rank n and let G be a smooth, commutative and quasi-projective S-group scheme with connected fibers. For every r>0, let Res_{G}^{(r)}: H^{r}(S_{et},G)---> H^{r}(S'_{et},G) and Cores_{G}^{(r)}: H^{r}(S'_{et},G)---> H^{r}(S_{et},G) be, respectively, the restriction and corestriction maps in etale cohomology induced by f. For certain pairs (f, G), we construct maps α_{r}: Ker Cores_{G}^{(r)}---> Coker Res_{G}^{(r)} and β_{r}: Coker Res_{G}^{(r)}---> Ker Cores_{G}^{(r)} such that α_{r}oβ_{r}=β_{r}oα_…
Given a number field extension $K/k$ with an intermediate field $K^+$ fixed by a central element of the corresponding Galois group of prime order $p$, we build an algebraic torus over $k$ whose rational points are elements of $K^\times$ sent to $k^\times$ via the norm map $N_{K/K^+}$. The goal is to compute the Tamagawa number of that torus explicitly via Ono's formula that expresses it as a ratio of cohomological invariants. A fairly complete and detailed description of the cohomology of the character lattice of such a torus is given when $K/k$ is Galois. Partial results including the numerat…
We investigate the Galois group G_S(p) of the maximal p-extension unramified outside a finite set S of primes of a number field in the (mixed) case, when there are primes dividing p inside and outside S. We show that the cohomology of G_S(p) is "often" isomorphic to the etale cohomology of the scheme Spec(O_k S), in particular, G_S(p) is of cohomological dimension 2 then. We deduce this from the results in our previous paper "Rings of integers of type K(π,1)" (arXiv:0705.3372), which mainly dealt with the tame case.
We study twists of the Burkhardt quartic threefold over non-algebraically closed base fields of characteristic different from 2,3,5. We show they all admit quartic models in projective four-space. We identify a Galois-cohomological obstruction that measures if a given twist is birational to a moduli space of abelian varieties. This obstruction has implications for the rational points on these varieties. As a result, we see that all possible 3-level structures can be realized by abelian surfaces, whereas Kummer 3-level structures that group-theoretically may be admissible, may not be realizable…
Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $A_{K}$ be an abelian $K$-variety with semistable reduction. Extending work by Kim and Marshall from the case where $p>2$ and $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified, we prove an $l=p$ complement of a Galois cohomological formula of Grothendieck for the $l$-primary part of the Néron component group of $A_{K}$. Our proof involves constructing, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, a finite flat $\mathscr{O}_K$-group scheme with generic fiber equal to the maximal 1-crystalline submodule of $A_{K}[p^{m}]$. As a corollar…
We study local-global questions for Galois cohomology over the function field of a curve defined over a p-adic field (a field of cohomological dimension 3). We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of the base field coming from a closed point of the curve. In the case of a torus we establish a perfect duality between the first Tate-Shafarevich group of the torus and the second Tate-Shafarevich group of the dual torus. As an application, we show that the failure of the local-global principle for rational points on …
We give a new method for solving a problem originally solved about 20 years ago by Sinnott and Kubert, namely that of computing the cohomology of the universal ordinary distribution with respect to the action of the two-element group generated by complex conjugation. We develop the method in sufficient generality so as to be able to calculate analogous cohomology groups in the function field setting which have not previously been calculated. In particular, we are able to confirm a conjecture of L.~S.~Yin conditional on which Yin was able to obtain results on unit indices generalizing those of …
