We investigate the Galois group G_S(p) of the maximal p-extension unramified outside a finite set S of primes of a number field in the (mixed) case, when there are primes dividing p inside and outside S. We show that the cohomology of G_S(p) is "often" isomorphic to the etale cohomology of the scheme Spec(O_k
S), in particular, G_S(p) is of cohomological dimension 2 then. We deduce this from the results in our previous paper "Rings of integers of type K(π,1)" (arXiv:0705.3372), which mainly dealt with the tame case.
In this paper we make a Gaussian integer version of the Erdős-Straus conjecture and we solve the Erdős-Straus diophantine equation over the rings of integers of norm-Euclidean quadratic fields.
In the recent p-adic q-integral on the p-adic integers' rings was constructed >. The purpose of this paper is to give several interesting integral equation for the p-adic q-integerals on the rings of p-adic integers. As an integral equations, we will treat relations between p-adic q-integral's equations and q-Bernoulli and Euler numbers.
A compact metric ring containing the set of positive integers as dense subset is studied. It is proven that tis ring is isomorph with a ring of reminder classes of ring of polyadic integers.
Building on the classification of all characteristic polynomials of integer symmetric matrices having small span (span less than 4), we obtain a classification of small-span polynomials that are the characteristic polynomial of a Hermitian matrix over some quadratic integer ring. Taking quadratic integer rings as our base, we obtain as characteristic polynomials some low-degree small-span polynomials that are not the characteristic (or minimal) polynomial of any integer symmetric matrix.
One of the many number theoretic topics investigated by the ancient Greeks was perfect numbers, which are positive integers equal to the sum of their proper positive integral divisors. Mathematicians from Euclid to Euler investigated these mysterious numbers. We present results on perfect numbers in the ring of Eisenstein integers.
We classify all cyclotomic matrices over real quadratic integer rings and we show that this classification is the same as classifying cyclotomic matrices over the compositum all real quadratic integer rings. Moreover, we enumerate a related class of symmetric matrices; those matrices whose eigenvalues are contained inside the interval [-2,2] but whose characteristic polynomials are not in Z[x].
We show that the complement of the ring of integers in a number field K is Diophantine. This means the set of ring of integers in K can be written as {t in K | for all x_1, ..., x_N in K, f(t,x_1, ..., x_N) is not 0}. We will use global class field theory and generalize the ideas originating from Koenigsmann's recent result giving a universal first order formula for Z in Q.
For $n=3$, 4, and 5, we prove that, when $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ are ordered by their absolute discriminants, the lattice shapes of the rings of integers in these fields become equidistributed in the space of lattices.
Let $K$ be a number field and $G$ a finite abelian group. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the number of tamely ramified $G$-extensions of $K$ with ring of integers of fixed realisable class as a Galois module.
We give an affirmative answer to the following question by Jarden and Narkiewicz: Is it true that every number field has a finite extension L such that the ring of integers of L is generated by its units (as a ring)? As a part of the proof, we generalize a theorem by Hinz on power-free values of polynomials in number fields.
In this article, we study several probabilistic properties of polynomials defined over the ring of $p$-adic integers under the Haar measure. First, we calculate the probability that a monic polynomial is separable, generalizing a result of Polak. Second, we introduce the notion of two polynomials being strongly coprime and calculate the probability of two monic polynomials {being} strongly coprime. Finally, we explain how our method can be used to extrapolate other probabilistic properties of polynomials over the ring of $p$-adic integers from polynomials defined over the integers modulo power…
We derive an inequality on the discrepancy of sequences on the ring of $p$-adic integers $\ZZ_p$ using techniques from Fourier analysis. The inequality is used to obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy of the sequence $α_n = na +b$, where $a$ and $b$ are elements of $\ZZ_p$. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the classical LeVeque inequality on the circle group $\RR/\ZZ$.
In this paper, we investigate generalizations of the Mahler-Popkens complexity of integers. Specifically, we generalize to $k$-th roots of unity, polynomials over the naturals, and the integers mod $m$. In cyclotomic rings, we establish upper and lower bounds for integer complexity, investigate the complexity of roots of unity using cyclotomic polynomials, and introduce a concept of "minimality.'' In polynomials over the naturals, we establish bounds on the sizes of complexity classes and establish a trivial but useful upper bound. In the integers mod $m$, we introduce the concepts of "ineffic…
It was shown by M. Bhargava and P. Harron that for $n=3,4,5$, the shapes of rings of integers of $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ become equidistributed in the space of shapes when the fields are ordered by discriminant. Instead of shapes, we correspond grids to each number field, which preserve more of the number fields' data. The space of grids is a fiber bundle over the space of shapes. We strengthen Bhargava-Harron's result by proving that the grids of rings of integers of $S_n$-number fields become equidistributed in the space of grids.
Let $R=\mathcal{O}_{\Q(\sqrt{d})}$ for $d<0$, squarefree, $d\neq -1,-3$. We prove Lehmer's conjecture for associated reciprocal polynomials of $R$-matrices; that is, any noncyclotomic $R$-matrix has Mahler measure at least $λ_0=1.176...$.
In [2], I constructed the p-adic q-integral on Zp. In this paper, we consider the properties of the p-adic invariant p-adic q-integral in the ring of p-adic integers at q=-1. Finally we give the some applications of p-adic q-integration at q=-1. These properties are useful and worthwhile to study Euler numbers and polynomials.
We prove that the ring of integers in the totally real cubic subfield $K^{(49)}$ of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7)$ has Pythagoras number equal to $4$. This is the smallest possible value for a totally real number field of odd degree. Moreover, we determine which numbers are sums of integral squares in this field, and use this knowledge to construct a diagonal universal quadratic form in five variables.
Lagrange's Four Squares Theorem states that any positive integer can be expressed as the sum of four integer squares. We investigate the analogous question over Quaternion rings, focusing on squares of elements of Quaternion rings with integer coefficients. We determine the minimum necessary number of squares for infinitely many Quaternion rings, and give global upper and lower bounds.
An Ulam sequence U(1,n) is defined as the sequence starting with integers 1,n such that n > 1, and such that every subsequent term is the smallest integer that can be written as the sum of distinct previous terms in exactly one way. This family of sequences is notable for being the subject of several remarkable rigidity conjectures. We introduce an analogous notion of an Ulam sequence inside the polynomial ring Z[X], and use it both to give new, constructive proofs of old results as well as producing a new conjecture that implies many of the other existing conjectures.
The classical Frobenius problem is to find the largest integer that cannot be written as a linear combination of a given set of positive, coprime integers using nonnegative integer coefficients. Prior work has generalized the classical Frobenius problem from integers to Frobenius problems in other rings. This paper explores Frobenius problems in various rings of (upper) triangular $2 \times 2$ matrices with constant diagonal.
In this note we give a brief survey of the most elementary criteria used to determine the surjectivity of the trace operator on the ring of integers of a number field $K$. Furthermore, we introduce an easy to state yet unknown surjectivity criterion depending only on the prime factorization of the degree $n$ of $K$ and on the squarefree part of the discriminant $d_K$.
In the making of origami, one starts with a piece of paper, and through a series of folds along seed points one constructs complicated three-dimensional shapes. Mathematically, one can think of the complex numbers as representing the piece of paper, and the seed points and folds as a way to generate a subset of the complex numbers. Under certain constraints, this construction can give rise to a ring, which we call an origami ring. We will talk about the basic construction of an origami ring and further extensions and implications of these ideas in algebra and number theory, extending results o…
The essential aim of this paper is to define weighted q-Hardy-littlewood-type maximal operator by means of p-adic q-invariant distribution on Zp. Moreover, we give some interesting properties concerning this type maximal operator.
A classical theorem in number theory due to Euler states that a positive integer $z$ can be written as the sum of two squares if and only if all prime factors $q$ of $z$, with $q\equiv 3 \pmod{4}$, have even exponent in the prime factorization of $z$. One can consider a minor variation of this theorem by not allowing the use of zero as a summand in the representation of $z$ as the sum of two squares. Viewing each of these questions in $\Z_n$, the ring of integers modulo $n$, we give a characterization of all integers $n\ge 2$ such that every $z\in \Z_n$ can be written as the sum of two squares…
We develop algorithms to turn quotients of rings of rings of integers into effective Euclidean rings by giving polynomial algorithms for all fundamental ring operations. In addition, we study normal forms for modules over such rings and their behavior under certain quotients. We illustrate the power of our ideas in a new modular normal form algorithm for modules over rings of integers, vastly outperforming classical algorithms.
The paper studies some properties of the ring of integer-valued quasi-polynomials. On this ring, theory of generalized Euclidean division and generalized GCD are presented. Applications to finite simple continued fraction expansion and Smith normal form of integral matrices with integer parameters are also given.
We prove that Hilbert's Tenth Problem for a ring of integers in a number field K has a negative answer if K satisfies two arithmetical conditions (existence of a so-called division-ample set of integers and of an elliptic curve of rank one over K). We relate division-ample sets to arithmetic of abelian varieties.
Let $m$ and $n$ be positive integers. For the quantum integer $[n]_q = 1 + q + ... + q^{n-1}$ there is a natural polynomial addition such that $[m]_q \oplus_q [n]_q = [m+n]_q$ and a natural polynomial multiplication such that $[m]_q \otimes_q [n]_q = [mn]_q$. These constructions lead to the construction of the ring of quantum integers and the field of quantum rational numbers. It is also shown that addition and multiplication of quantum integers are equivalent to elementary decompositions of intervals of integers in additive number theory.
We show that the set of algebraic extensions $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ in which $\mathbb{Z}$ or the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_F$ are definable is meager in the set of all algebraic extensions.
A ring $R$ is said to be clean if each element of $R$ can be written as the sum of a unit and an idempotent. In a recent article (J. Algebra, 405 (2014), 168-178), Immormino and McGoven characterized when the group ring $\mathbb Z_{(p)}[C_n]$ is clean, where $\mathbb Z_{(p)}$ is the localization of the integers at the prime $p$. In this paper, we consider a more general setting. Let $K$ be an algebraic number field, $\mathcal O_K$ be its ring of integers, and $R$ be a localization of $\mathcal O_K$ at some prime ideal. We investigate when $R[G]$ is clean, where $G$ is a finite abelian group, a…
Let k>1 be an integer and let p be a prime. We show that if $p^a\le k<2p^a$ or $k=p^aq+1$ (with 2q<p) for some a=1,2,..., then the set {\binom{n}{k}: n=0,1,2,...} is dense in the ring Z_p of p-adic integers, i.e., it contains a complete system of residues modulo any power of p.
We prove an explicit uniform Chevalley theorem for direct summands of graded polynomial rings in mixed characteristic. Our strategy relies on the introduction of a new type of differential powers, which do not require the existence of a p-derivation on the direct summand.
We show the 3 by 3 magic square of squares problem equivalent to solving quartic polynomials with certain factorization constraints over an abelian extension of the rationals. We analyze a particular case in which said extension is assumed to be the Gaussian integers resulting a new search method. Additionally, the magic square of squares is analyzed over finite fields and rings of the form Z/nZ resulting in some conjectures enumerating the rings and finite fields in which a magic square of squares can be constructed. Code is made available.
For a positive proportion of primes $p$ and $q$, we prove that $\mathbb{Z}$ is Diophantine in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p},\sqrt{-q})$. This provides a new and explicit infinite family of number fields $K$ such that Hilbert's tenth problem for $O_K$ is unsolvable. Our methods use Iwasawa theory and congruences of Heegner points in order to obtain suitable rank stability properties for elliptic curves.
Let O be the ring of integers of a number field K. For an O-algebra R which is torsion free as an O-module we define what we mean by a Lambda_O-ring structure on R. We can determine whether a finite etale K-algebra E with Lambda_O-ring structure has an integral model in terms of a Deligne-Ribet monoid of K. This a commutative monoid whose invertible elements form a ray class group.
In 1995, Meinardus & Berg presented a reformulation of the Collatz Conjecture in terms of a functional equation in a single complex variable over the open unit disk. This paper generalizes that method to deal with not only a large class of Collatz-type maps defined on the integers, but further generalizations thereof to Collatz-type maps on the rings of integers on an arbitrary algebraic number field.
We study variants of the Erd\H os distance problem and dot products problem in the setting of the integers modulo $q$, where $q = p^{\ell}$ is a power of an odd prime.
We prove a negative solution to the analogue of Hilbert's tenth problem for rings of one variable non-Archimedean entire functions in any characteristic. In the positive characteristic case we prove more: the ring of rational integers is uniformly positive existentially interpretable in the class of $\{0,1,t,+,\cdot,=\}$-structures consisting of positive characteristic rings of entire functions on the variable $t$. From this we deduce uniform undecidability results for the positive existential theory of such structures. As a key intermediate step, we prove a rationality result for the solution…
We present a new approach to the ideal membership problem for polynomial rings over the integers: given polynomials $f_0,f_1,...,f_n\in\Z[X]$, where $X=(X_1,...,X_N)$ is an $N$-tuple of indeterminates, are there $g_1,...,g_n\in\Z[X]$ such that $f_0=g_1f_1+...+g_nf_n$? We show that the degree of the polynomials $g_1,...,g_n$ can be bounded by $(2d)^{2^{O(N^2)}}(h+1)$ where $d$ is the maximum total degree and $h$ the maximum height of the coefficients of $f_0,...,f_n$. Some related questions, primarily concerning linear equations in $R[X]$, where $R$ is the ring of integers of a number field, ar…
Let O be the ring of S-integers in a number field k. We prove that if the group of units O^* is infinite then every matrix in $Γ$ = SL_2(O) is a product of at most 9 elementary matrices. This completes a long line of research in this direction. As a consequence, we obtain that $Γ$ is boundedly generated as an abstract group.
For each prime number $p$, the dynamical behavior of the square mapping on the ring $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers is studied. For $p=2$, there are only attracting fixed points with their attracting basins. For $p\geq 3$, there are a fixed point $0$ with its attracting basin, finitely many periodic points around which there are countably many minimal components and some balls of radius $1/p$ being attracting basins. All these minimal components are precisely exhibited for different primes $p$.
We define a generalization of the Brauer group $\operatorname{H}_\mathrm{B}^{n}(X)$ for an equi-dimensional scheme $X$ and $n>0$. In the case where $X$ is the spectrum of a local ring of a smooth algebra over a discrete valuation ring, $\operatorname{H}_\mathrm{B}^{n}(X)$ agrees with the étale motivic cohomology $\operatorname{H}^{n+1}_{\mathrm{\acute{e}t}}\left(X, \mathbb{Z}(n-1)\right)$. We prove (a part of) the Gersten-type conjecture for the generalized Brauer group for a local ring of a smooth algebra over a mixed characteristic discrete valuation ring and an isomorphism $ \operatorname{H…
In this note we, first, recall that the sets of all representatives of some special ordinary residue classes become $\left( m,n\right) $-rings. Second, we introduce a possible $p$-adic analog of the residue class modulo a $p$-adic integer. Then, we find the relations which determine, when the representatives form a $\left( m,n\right) $-ring. At the very short spacetime scales such rings could lead to new symmetries of modern particle models.
In this article, we prove a strong version of local Bertini theorem for normality on local rings in mixed characteristic. The main result asserts that a generic hyperplane section of a normal, Cohen-Macaulay, and complete local domain of dimension at least 3 is normal. Applications include the study of characteristic ideals attached to torsion modules over Noetherian normal domains, which is fundamental in the study of Euler system theory over normal domains and Iwasawa main conjectures.
