We present a new approach to the ideal membership problem for polynomial rings over the integers: given polynomials $f_0,f_1,...,f_n\in\Z[X]$, where $X=(X_1,...,X_N)$ is an $N$-tuple of indeterminates, are there $g_1,...,g_n\in\Z[X]$ such that $f_0=g_1f_1+...+g_nf_n$? We show that the degree of the polynomials $g_1,...,g_n$ can be bounded by $(2d)^{2^{O(N^2)}}(h+1)$ where $d$ is the maximum total degree and $h$ the maximum height of the coefficients of $f_0,...,f_n$. Some related questions, primarily concerning linear equations in $R[X]$, where $R$ is the ring of integers of a number field, are also treated.
Mayr and Meyer found ideals with the doubly exponential ideal membership property. In the analysis of the associated primes of these ideals (in math.AC/0209344), a new family of ideals arose. This new family is presented and analyzed in this paper. It is proved that this new family also satisfies the doubly exponential ideal membership property. Furthermore, the set of associated primes of this family can be computed inductively.
This paper investigates the doubly exponential ideal membership property of the Mayr-Meyer ideals from the point of view of their associated primes. A doubly-exponential upper bound on the set of associated primes is proved. In the paper a new family of ideals emerges which also has the doubly exponential ideal membership property. More on the new family can be found in author's paper "A new family of ideals with the doubly exponential ideal membership property".
We present a close relationship between matching number, covering numbers and their fractional versions in combinatorial optimization and ordinary powers, integral closures of powers, and symbolic powers of monomial ideals. This relationship leads to several new results and problems on the containments between these powers.
We find a relation between the vanishing of a globally defined residue current on $¶^n$ and solution of the membership problem with control of the polynomial degrees. Several classical results appear as special cases, such as Max Nöther's theorem, and we also obtain a generalization of that theorem. There are also connections to effective versions of the Nullstellensatz. We also provide explicit integral representations of the solutions.
We consider polynomial maps, which we call degree $d$-linear maps, that satisfy the Jacobian condition. We prove that certain infinite families of elements, which appear in the coefficients of the formal inverse of such maps, are in the ideal determined by the Jacobian condition. Using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, we provide expressions for these elements in terms of the generators of that ideal. We also give a combinatorial proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem similar to that of Straubing \cite{Straubing}. We also include results of Gröbner basis computations regarding other elements.
We use geometric and cohomological methods to show that given a degree bound for membership in ideals of a fixed degree type in the polynomial ring P=k[x_0,..., x_d], one obtains a good generic degree bound for membership in the tight closure of an ideal of that degree type in any standard-graded k-algebra R of dimension d+1. This indicates that the tight closure of an ideal behaves more uniformly than the ideal itself. Moreover, if R is normal, one obtains a generic bound for membership in the Frobenius closure. If d is at most 2, then the bound for ideal membership in P can be computed from …
In this paper we consider the Ideal Membership Problem (IMP for short), in which we are given real polynomials $f_0,f_1,\dots, f_k$ and the question is to decide whether $f_0$ belongs to the ideal generated by $f_1,\dots,f_k$. In the more stringent version the task is also to find a proof of this fact. The IMP underlies many proof systems based on polynomials such as Nullstellensatz, Polynomial Calculus, and Sum-of-Squares. In the majority of such applications the IMP involves so called combinatorial ideals that arise from a variety of discrete combinatorial problems. This restriction makes th…
In this paper, we present an algorithm for computing the minimal reductions of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of Cohen--Macaulay local rings. Using this algorithm, we are able to compute the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicities and solve the membership problem for the integral closure of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals.
Mayr and Meyer found ideals $J(n,d)$ (in a polynomial ring in $10n+2$ variables over a field $k$ and generators of degree at most $d+2$) with ideal membership property which is doubly exponential in $n$. This paper is a first step in understanding the primary decomposition of these ideals: it is proved here that $J(n,d)$ has $nd^2 + 20$ minimal prime ideals. Also, all the minimal components are computed, and the intersection of the minimal components as well.
Given two finite sequences of positive integers $α$ and $β$, we associate a square free monomial ideal $I_{α,β}$ in a ring of polynomials $S$, and we recursively compute the algebraic invariants of $S/I_{α,β}$. Also, we give precise formulas in special cases.
Let $k$ be an infinite field and $I\subset k [x_1, \ldots ,x_n]$ be an ideal such that dim $V(I)=q$. Denote by $(f_1, \ldots, f_s)$ a set of generators of $I$. One can see that in the set $I\cap k [x_{1},...,x_{q+1}]$ there exist non-zero polynomials, depending only on these $q+1$ variables. We aim to bound the minimal degree of the polynomials of this type, and of a Bézout (i.e. membership) relation expressing such a polynomial as a combination of the $f_i$.
A \textit{symmetric ideal} $I \subseteq R = K[x_1,x_2,...]$ is an ideal that is invariant under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group. We give an explicit algorithm to find Gröbner bases for symmetric ideals in the infinite dimensional polynomial ring $R$. This allows for symbolic computation in a new class of rings. In particular, we solve the ideal membership problem for symmetric ideals of $R$.
For arbitrary positive integers $q_1 \ge q_2 \ge q_3 \ge \cdots$ we construct a family of monomial ideals such that for each positive integer $e$ and for each ideal $I$ in the family, the number of associated primes of $I^e$ is the $q_e$. We present the associated primes explicitly.
Let I be a nonzero proper ideal in a Noetherian integral domain R. In this paper we establish the existence of a finite separable integral extension domain A of R and a positive integer m such that all the Rees integers of IA are equal to m. Moreover, if R has altitude one, then all the Rees integers of J = Rad(IA) are equal to one and the ideals J^m and IA have the same integral closure. Thus Rad(IA) = J is a projectively full radical ideal that is projectively equivalent to IA. In particular, if R is Dedekind, then there exists a Dedekind domain A having the following properties: (i) A is a …
This short paper presents saturation-based algorithms for homogenization and elimination. This algorithm can compute elimination ideals by using syzygies and ideal membership test, hence it works with any} monomial order, in particular without the use of block-elimination orders. The used saturation is a translation of the geometric fact that the projective closure of an affine scheme has no components in the hyperplane at infinity.
In this paper, we study first the relationship between Pommaret bases and Hilbert series. Given a finite Pommaret basis, we derive new explicit formulas for the Hilbert series and for the degree of the ideal generated by it which exhibit more clearly the influence of each generator. Then we establish a new dimension depending Bezout bound for the degree and use it to obtain a dimension depending bound for the ideal membership problem.
We present an algorithm to compute a primary decomposition of an ideal in a polynomial ring over the integers. For this purpose we use algorithms for primary decomposition in polynomial rings over the rationals resp. over finite fields, and the idea of Shimoyama-Yokoyama resp. Eisenbud-Hunecke-Vasconcelos to extract primary ideals from pseudo-primary ideals. A parallelized version of the algorithm is implemented in SINGULAR. Examples and timings are given at the end of the article.
An intersection of sets $A = \bigcap_{i \in I}B_i$ is irredundant if no $B_i$ can be omitted from this intersection. We develop a topological approach to irredundance by introducing a notion of a spectral representation, a spectral space whose members are sets that intersect to a given set $A$ and whose topology encodes set membership. We define a notion of a minimal representation and show that for such representations, irredundance is a topological property. We apply this approach to intersections of valuation rings and ideals. In the former case we focus on Krull-like domains and Prüfer $v$…
Given an arbitrary integer $d>0$, we construct a homogeneous ideal $I$ of the polynomial ring $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_{3d}]$ in $3d$ variables over a filed $K$ for which $S/I$ is a Cohen--Macaulay ring of dimension $d$ with the property that, for each of the integers $0 \leq r \leq d$, there exists a monomial order $<_r$ on $S$ with ${\rm depth} (S/{\rm in}_{<_r}(I)) = r$, where ${\rm in}_{<_r}(I)$ is the initial ideal of $I$ with respect to $<_r$.
Let R be an excellent local ring, m its maximal ideal and I an ideal. Then there exists a positive integer c such that for all integers n, the integral closure of (I + m^n) is contained in m^(n/c) + the integral closure of I. In the proof, a version of the linear Artin approximation theorem is proved.
We introduce differential primary decompositions for ideals in a commutative ring. Ideal membership is characterized by differential conditions. The minimal number of conditions needed is the arithmetic multiplicity. Minimal differential primary decompositions are unique up to change of bases. Our results generalize the construction of Noetherian operators for primary ideals in the analytic theory of Ehrenpreis-Palamodov, and they offer a concise method for representing affine schemes. The case of modules is also addressed. We implemented an algorithm in Macaulay2 that computes the minimal dec…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce new invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Our focus is the class of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical ideal. Attached to each such ring R with a canonical ideal C, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of C--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. We enlarge this list with other integers--the roots of R and several canonical degrees. The latter are multiplicity based functions of the Rees algebra of C.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. We prove that the modules $S/\overline{I(G)^k}$ and $\overline{I(G)^k}/\overline{I(G)^{k+1}}$ satisfy Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\gg 0$. If $G$ is a non-bipartite graph, we show that the ideals $\overline{I(G)^k}$ satisfy Stanley's inequality for all $k\gg 0$. For every connected bipartite graph $G$ (with at least one edge), we prove that ${\rm sdepth}(I(G)^k)\geq 2$, for any positive integer $k\leq {\rm girth}…
This paper studies the numbers of minimal generators of powers of monomial ideals in polynomial rings. For a monomial ideal $I$ in two variables, Eliahou, Herzog, and Saem gave a sharp lower bound $μ(I^2)\ge 9$ for the number of minimal generators of $I^2$ with $μ(I)\geq 6$. Recently, Gasanova constructed monomial ideals such that $μ(I)>μ(I^n)$ for any positive integer $n$. In reference to them, we construct a certain class of monomial ideals such that $μ(I)>μ(I^2)>\cdots >μ(I^n)=(n+1)^2$ for any positive integer $n$, which provides one of the most unexpected behaviors of the function $μ(I^k)$…
Given the monomial ideal I=(x_1^{α_1},...,x_{n}^{α_{n}})\subset K[x_1,...,x_{n}] where α_{i} are positive integers and K a field and let J be the integral closure of I . It is a challenging problem to translate the question of the normality of J into a question about the exponent set Γ(J) and the Newton polyhedron NP(J). A relaxed version of this problem is to give necessary or sufficient conditions on α_1,...,α_{n} for the normality of J. We show that if α_{i}ε{s,l} with s and l arbitrary positive integers, then J is normal.
Let $k\geq 3$ be an integer and $G$ be a very well-covered graph with ${\rm odd-girth}(G)\geq 2k+1$. Assume that $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$. We show that for every integer $s$ with $1\leq s\leq k-2$, we have ${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)=2s+ν(G)-1$, where $ν(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a regular local ring or a polynomial ring over a field, and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ which we assume to be graded if $R$ is a polynomial ring. Let astab$(I)$ resp. $\overline{\rm astab}(I)$ be the smallest integer $n$ for which Ass$(I^n)$ resp. Ass$(\overline{I^n})$ stabilize, and dstab$(I)$ be the smallest integer $n$ for which depth$(I^n)$ stabilizes. Here $\overline{I^n}$ denotes the integral closure of $I^n$. We show that astab$(I)=\overline{\rm astab}(I)={\rm dstab}(I)$ if dim$\,R\leq 2$, while already in dimension $3$, astab$(I)$ and $\overline{\rm astab}(I)$ …
Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$ and matching number ${\rm match}(G)$. For every integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the $s$-th squarefree power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{[s]}$. It is shown that for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, the inequality ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{[s]})\leq {\rm match}(G)+s$ holds provided that $G$ belongs to either of the following classes: (i) very well-covered graphs, (ii) semi-Hamiltonian graphs, or (iii) sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graphs. Moreover, we prove that for every Cameron-Walker graph $G$ and for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, we …
The properties of the intersection algebra of two principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring are investigated in detail. Results are obtained regarding the Hilbert series and the canonical ideal of the intersection algebra using methods from the theory of diophantine linear equations with integer coefficients.
The structure of the defining ideal of the semigroup ring $k[H]$ of a numerical semigroup $H$ over a field $k$ is described, when the pseudo-Frobenius numbers of $H$ are multiples of a fixed integer.
Let $I$ be a regular proper ideal in a Noetherian ring $R$, let $e \ge 2$ be an integer, let $\mathbf T_e = R[u,tI,u^{\frac{1}{e}}]' \cap R[u^{\frac{1}{e}},t^{\frac{1}{e}}]$ (where $t$ is an indeterminate and $u =\frac{1}{t}$), and let $\mathbf r_e = u^{\frac{1}{e}} \mathbf T_e$. Then the Itoh (e)-valuation rings of $I$ are the rings $(\mathbf T_e/z)_{(p/z)}$, where $p$ varies over the (height one) associated prime ideals of $\mathbf r_e$ and $z$ is the (unique) minimal prime ideal in $\mathbf T_e$ that is contained in $p$. We show, among other things: (1) $\mathbf r_e$ is a radical ideal if a…
We discuss projective equivalence of ideals in Noetherian rings and the existence or failure of existence of projectively full ideals. We describe connections with the Rees valuations and Rees integers of an ideal, and consider the question of whether improvements can be made by passing to an integral extension ring.
We present an algorithm to compute the primary decomposition of a submodule $\mathcal{N}$ of the free module $\Z[x_1, \ldots, x_n]^m$. For this purpose we use algorithms for primary decomposition of ideals in the polynomial ring over the integers. The idea is to compute first the minimal associated primes of $\mathcal{N}$, i.e. the minimal associated primes of the ideal $\Ann(\Z[x_1, \ldots, x_n]^m /\mathcal{N})$ in $\Z[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ and then compute the primary components using pseudo-primary decomposition and extraction, following the ideas of Shimoyama-Yokoyama. The algorithms are implem…
In this paper we will define analogs of Gröbner bases for $R$-subalgebras and their ideals in a polynomial ring $R[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ where $R$ is a noetherian integral domain with multiplicative identity and in which we can determine ideal membership and compute syzygies. The main goal is to present and verify algorithms for constructing these Gröbner basis counterparts. As an application, we will produce a method for computing generators for the first syzygy module of a subset of an $R$-subalgebra of $R[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ where each coordinate of each syzygy must be an element of the subalgebra.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $p$ is the number of its bipartite connected components. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(I^k/I^{k+1})\geq p$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^k)\geq p$ hold. As a consequence, we conclude that $S/I^k$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\geq n-1$. Also, it follows that $I^k/I^{k+1}$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $…
An integer partition λof n corresponds, via its Ferrers diagram, to an artinian monomial ideal I of colength n in the polynomial ring on two variables. If the partition λcorresponds to an integrally closed ideal we call λconcave. We study generating functions for the number of concave partitions, unrestricted or with at most r parts.
Let $\mathfrak{S}_n$ be the set of all permutations of $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and let $W$ be the subset consisting of permutations $σ\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding 132 and 312-patterns. The monomial ideal $I_W = \left\langle \mathbf{x}^σ = \prod_{i=1}^n x_i^{σ(i)} : σ\in W \right\rangle $ in the polynomial ring $R = k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $k$ is called a hypercubic ideal in the article (Certain variants of multipermutohedron ideals, Proc. Indian Acad. Sci.(Math Sci. Vol. 126, No.4, (2016), 479-500). The Alexander dual $I_W^{[\mathbf{n}]}$ of $I_W$ with respect to $\mathbf{n}=(n,\ldots,n)$…
Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$ and let $I(G)^{(s)}$ denote the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$. It is proved that for every integer $s\geq 1$, $${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(s+1)})\leq \max\bigg\{{\rm reg}(I(G))+2s, {\rm reg}\big(I(G)^{(s+1)}+I(G)^s\big)\bigg\}.$$As a consequence, we conclude that ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(2)})\leq {\rm reg}(I(G))+2$, and ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(3)})\leq {\rm reg}(I(G))+4$. Moreover, it is shown that if for some integer $k\geq 1$, the graph $G$ has no odd cycle of length at most $2k-1$, then ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(s)})\leq 2s+{\rm reg}(I(G))-2$, for every integer $s\leq k…
We introduce a novel representation of structured polynomial ideals, which we refer to as chordal networks. The sparsity structure of a polynomial system is often described by a graph that captures the interactions among the variables. Chordal networks provide a computationally convenient decomposition into simpler (triangular) polynomial sets, while preserving the underlying graphical structure. We show that many interesting families of polynomial ideals admit compact chordal network representations (of size linear in the number of variables), even though the number of components is exponenti…
Let R denote a commutative Noetherian ring and let I be an ideal of R such that H_i^I(R) = 0, for all integers i greater than or equal to 2. In this paper we shall prove some results concerning the homological properties of I.
Let $m>1$ be an integer, and let $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ be the set of all non-zero proper ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$. The intersection graph of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G(\mathbb{Z}_m)$, is a graph with vertices $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ and two distinct vertices $I,J\in I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ are adjacent if and only if $I\cap J\neq 0$. Let $n>1$ be an integer and $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be a $\mathbb{Z}_m$-module. In this paper, we introduce and study a kind of graph structure of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$. It is the undirected graph with the vertex set $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$, and two …
Given integers $r$ and $b$ with $1 \leq b \leq r$, a finite simple connected graph $G$ for which ${\rm reg}(S/I(G)) = r$ and the number of extremal Betti numbers of $S/I(G)$ is equal to $b$ will be constructed.
Determinantal ideals of graphs generalize, among others, the spectrum and the Smith normal form (SNF) of integer matrices associated to graphs. In this work we investigate the relationship of the spectrum and the SNF with the determinantal ideals. We show that an eigenvalue divides the $k$-th invariant factor of its SNF if the eigenvalue belongs to a variety of the $k$-th univariate integer determinantal ideal of the matrix. This result has as a corollary a theorem of Rushanan. We also study graphs having the same determinantal ideals with at most one indeterminate; the socalled codeterminanta…
