Let k>1 be an integer and let p be a prime. We show that if $p^a\le k<2p^a$ or $k=p^aq+1$ (with 2q<p) for some a=1,2,..., then the set {\binom{n}{k}: n=0,1,2,...} is dense in the ring Z_p of p-adic integers, i.e., it contains a complete system of residues modulo any power of p.
We propose higher-order generalizations of Jacobsthal's $p$-adic approximation for binomial coefficients. Our results imply explicit formulae for linear combinations of binomial coefficients $\binom{ip}{p}$ ($i=1,2,\dots$) that are divisible by arbitrarily large powers of prime $p$.
The coefficients c(n,k) defined by (1-k^2x)^(-1/k) = sum c(n,k) x^n reduce to the central binomial coefficients for k=2. Motivated by a question of H. Montgomery and H. Shapiro for the case k=3, we prove that c(n,k) are integers and study their divisibility properties.
We prove that for any nonnegative integers $n$ and $r$ the binomial sum $$ \sum_{k=-n}^n\binom{2n}{n-k}k^{2r} $$ is divisible by $2^{2n-\min\{α(n),α(r)\}}$, where $α(n)$ denotes the number of 1's in the binary expansion of $n$. This confirms a recent conjecture of Guo and Zeng.
In the work we have considered p-adic functional series with binomial coefficients and discussed its p-adic convergence. Then we have derived a recurrence relation following with a summation formula which is invariant for rational argument. More precisely, we have investigated a sufficient condition under which the p-adic power series converges to a rational invariant sum 0. Finally we have shown application of the invariant summation formula to get some intersting relations involving Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli polynomials.
Let f(n)= Sum binomial(n,k)^(-1). First, we show that f:N to Q_p is nowhere continuous in the p-adic topology. If x is a p-adic integer, we say that f(x) is p-definable if lim f(x_j) exists in Q_p, where x_j denotes the jth partial sum for x. We prove that f(-1) is p-definable for all primes p, and if p is odd, then -1 is the only element of Z_p - N for which f(x) is p-definable. For p=2, we show that if k is a positive integer, then f(-k-1) is not 2-definable, but that if the 1's in the binary expansion of x are eventually very sparse, then f(x) is 2-definable. Some of our proofs require that…
Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. We show that every Schwartz function on F, with values in an algebraic closure of Q_p, is the uniform limit of a sequence of Schwartz functions, whose Fourier transforms tend uniformly to 0. The proof uses the notion of q-binomial coefficients and some classical identities between them.
The twisted $T$-adic exponential sum associated to $x^{d}+λx$ is studied. If $λ\neq0,$ then an explicit arithmetic polygon is proved to be the Newton polygon of the twisted $C$-function of the T-adic exponential sum. It gives the Newton polygons of the $L$-functions of twisted $p$-power order exponential sums.
If p is a prime and n a positive integer, let v(n) denote the exponent of p in n, and u(n)=n/p^{v(n)} the unit part of n. If k is a positive integer not divisible by p, we show that the p-adic limit of (-1)^{pke} u((kp^e)!) as e goes to infinity is a well-defined p-adic integer, which we call z_k. In terms of these, we give a formula for the p-adic limit of binom{a p^e +c, b p^e +d) as e goes to infinity, which we call binom(a p^\infty +c, b p^\infty +d). Here a \ge b are positive integers, and c and d are integers.
Recently the first author proved a congruence proposed in 2006 by Adamchuk: $\sum_{k=1}^{\lfloor\frac{2p}{3}\rfloor}\binom{2k}{k}\equiv 0\pmod{p^2}$ for any prime $p=1 \pmod{3}$. In this paper, we provide more examples (with proofs) of congruences of the same kind $$\sum_{k=1}^{\lfloor\frac{ap}{r}\rfloor}\binom{2k}{k}x^k \pmod{p^2}$$ where $p$ is a prime such that $p\equiv 1 \pmod{r}$, $a/r$ is a fraction in $(1/2,1)$ and $x$ is a $p$-adic integer. The key ingredients are the $p$-adic Gamma functions $Γ_p$ and a special class of computer-discovered hypergeometric identities.
Using $P(n,m)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts, which was the subject of an earlier paper, $P(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts with each part at most $p$, can be computed in $O(n^2)$, and the q-binomial coefficient can be computed in $O(n^3)$. Using the definition of the q-binomial coefficient, some properties of the q-binomial coefficient and $P(n,m,p)$ are derived. The q-multinomial coefficient can be computed as a product of q-binomial coefficients. A formula for $Q(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into e…
Let S(n,k) denote the Stirling numbers of the second kind. We prove that the p-adic limit of S(p^e a + c, p^e b + d) as e goes to infinity exists for all integers a, b, c, and d. We call the limiting p-adic integer S(p^\infty a + c, p^\infty b + d). When a equiv b mod (p-1) or d \le 0, we express them in terms of p-adic binomial coefficients introduced in a recent paper.
We investigate the $p$-adic valuation of Weil sums of the form $W_{F,d}(a)=\sum_{x \in F} ψ(x^d -a x)$, where $F$ is a finite field of characteristic $p$, $ψ$ is the canonical additive character of $F$, the exponent $d$ is relatively prime to $|F^\times|$, and $a$ is an element of $F$. Such sums often arise in arithmetical calculations and also have applications in information theory. For each $F$ and $d$ one would like to know $V_{F,d}$, the minimum $p$-adic valuation of $W_{F,d}(a)$ as $a$ runs through the elements of $F$. We exclude exponents $d$ that are congruent to a power of $p$ modulo …
We study divisibility properties of certain sums and alternating sums involving binomial coefficients and powers of integers. For example, we prove that for all positive integers $n_1,..., n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any nonnegative integer $r$, there holds {align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n_1}ε^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\choose n_i-k} \equiv 0 \mod (n_1+n_m+1){n_1+n_m\choose n_1}, {align*} and conjecture that for any nonnegative integer $r$ and positive integer $s$ such that $r+s$ is odd, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}ε^k (2k+1)^{r}({2n\choose n-k}-{2n\choose n-k-1})^{s} \equiv 0 \mod{2n\choose n}, $$…
We first prove that if $a$ has a prime factor not dividing $b$ then there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\binom {an+bn} {an}$ is not divisible by $bn+1$. This confirms a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. Moreover, we provide some new divisibility properties of binomial coefficients: for example, we prove that $\binom {12n} {3n}$ and $\binom {12n} {4n}$ are divisible by $6n-1$, and that $\binom {330n} {88n}$ is divisible by $66n-1$, for all positive integers $n$. As we show, the latter results are in fact consequences of divisibility and positivity results for quotients of $…
We establish two binomial coefficient--generalized harmonic sum identities using the partial fraction decomposition method. These identities are a key ingredient in the proofs of numerous supercongruences. In particular, in other works of the author, they are used to establish modulo $p^k$ ($k>1$) congruences between truncated generalized hypergeometric series, and a function which extends Greene's hypergeometric function over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. A specialization of one of these congruences is used to prove an outstanding conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas which relates a trun…
In this paper we prove several inequalities for binomial coefficients. For instance, if $ k$ and $n$ are positive integers such that $n\ge 400$ and $[\frac n5]\le k\le [\frac n2]$, where $[x]$ is the greatest integer not exceeding $x$, then $$\binom nk<\Big(1-\frac{5(k-[\f n5])}{6n^2}\Big) \frac{n^{n-\f 12}}{k^k(n-k)^{n-k}}.$$
An identity for binomial symbols modulo an odd positive integer $n$ relating to the least prime factor of $n$ is proved. The identity is discussed within the context of Pell conics.
By using the Newton interpolation formula, we generalize the recent identities on the Catalan triangle obtained by Miana and Romero as well as those of Chen and Chu. We further study divisibility properties of sums of products of binomial coefficients and an odd power of a natural number. For example, we prove that for all positive integers $n_1, ..., n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any nonnegative integer $r$, the expression $$n_1^{-1}{n_1+n_{m}\choose n_1}^{-1} \sum_{k=1}^{n_1}k^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}\choose n_i+k}$$ is either an integer or a half-integer. Moreover, several related conj…
In the recent p-adic q-integral on the p-adic integers' rings was constructed >. The purpose of this paper is to give several interesting integral equation for the p-adic q-integerals on the rings of p-adic integers. As an integral equations, we will treat relations between p-adic q-integral's equations and q-Bernoulli and Euler numbers.
We show that, for all positive integers $n_1, \ldots, n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any non-negative integers $j$ and $r$ with $j\leqslant m$, the expression $$ \frac{1}{[n_1]}{n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1} \sum_{k=1}^{n_1}[2k][k]^{2r}q^{jk^2-(r+1)k}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}\brack n_i+k} $$ is a Laurent polynomial in $q$ with integer cofficients, where $[n]=1+q+\cdots+q^{n-1}$ and ${n\brack k}=\prod_{i=1}^k(1-q^{n-i+1})/(1-q^i)$. This gives a $q$-analogue of a divisibility result on the Catalan triangle obtained by the first author and Zeng, and also confirms a conjecture of the first author and Zen…
For all positive integers n, we prove the following divisibility properties: $$(2n+3){2n\choose n} | 3{6n\choose 3n}{3n\choose n}, and (10n+3){3n\choose n} | 21{15n\choose 5n} {5n\choose n}.$$ This confirms two recent conjectures of Z.-W. Sun. Some similar divisibility properties are given. Moreover, we show that, for all positive integers m and n, the product $am{am+bm-1\choose am}{an+bn\choose an}$ is divisible by m+n. In fact, the latter result can be generalized to the q-binomial coefficients and q-integers case, which generalizes the positivity of q-Catalan numbers. We also propose severa…
Let q>1 and m>0 be relatively prime integers. We find an explicit period $ν_m(q)$ such that for any integers n>0 and r we have $[n+ν_m(q),r]_m(a)=[n,r]_m(a) (mod q)$ whenever a is an integer with $\gcd(1-(-a)^m,q)=1$, or a=-1 (mod q), or a=1 (mod q) and 2|m, where $[n,r]_m(a)=\sum_{k=r(mod m)}\binom{n}{k}a^k$. This is a further extension of a congruence of Glaisher.
In 2002 Zhi-Wei Sun [Integers 2(2002)] published a curious identity involving binomial coefficients. In this paper we present a generalization of the identity.
Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $a$ be a rational $p$-adic integer, using WZ method we establish the congruences modulo $p^3$ for $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1} \binom ak\binom{-1-a}k\binom{2k}k\frac {w(k)}{4^k},$$ where $$w(k)=1,\frac 1{k+1},\frac 1{(k+1)^2},\frac 1{(k+1)^3},\frac 1{2k-1},\frac 1{k+2}, \frac 1{k+3}, k,k^2,k^3,\frac 1{a+k},\frac 1{a+k-1}.$$ As consequences, taking $a=-\frac 12,-\frac 13,-\frac 14,-\frac 16$ we deduce many congruences modulo $p^3$ and so solve some conjectures posed by the author earlier.
In [2], I constructed the p-adic q-integral on Zp. In this paper, we consider the properties of the p-adic invariant p-adic q-integral in the ring of p-adic integers at q=-1. Finally we give the some applications of p-adic q-integration at q=-1. These properties are useful and worthwhile to study Euler numbers and polynomials.
By using the Rodriguez-Villegas-Mortenson supercongruences, we prove four supercongruences on sums involving binomial coefficients, which were originally conjectured by Sun. We also confirm a related conjecture of Guo on integer-valued polynomials.
We prove that, for all positive integers $n_1, \ldots, n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and non-negative integers $j$ and $r$ with $j\leqslant m$, the following two expressions \begin{align*} &\frac{1}{[n_1+n_m+1]}{n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n_1} q^{j(k^2+k)-(2r+1)k}[2k+1]^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^m {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\brack n_i-k},\\[5pt] &\frac{1}{[n_1+n_m+1]}{n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n_1}(-1)^k q^{{k\choose 2}+j(k^2+k)-2rk}[2k+1]^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^m {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\brack n_i-k} \end{align*} are Laurent polynomials in $q$ with integer coefficients, where $[n]=1+q+\cdots+q^{n-1}$ and ${n\brack k…
For $n\ge 3$ let $f(n)$ be the least positive integer $k$ such that $\binom nk>\frac{2^n}{n+1}$. In this paper we investigate the properties of $f(n)$.
With help of $q$-congruence, we prove the divisibility of some binomial sums. For example, for any integers $ρ,n\geq 2$, $$\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(4k+1) \binom{2k}{k}^ρ\cdot (-4)^{ρ(n-1-k)} \equiv 0\pmod{2^{ρ-2}n\binom{2n}{n}}.$$
We express the classical $p$-adic integers $\hat{\mathbb{Z}_p}$, as a metric space, as a final colagebra to a certain endofunctor. We realize the addition and the multiplication on $\hat{\mathbb{Z}_p}$ as the coalgebra maps from $\hat{\mathbb{Z}_p} \times \hat{\mathbb{Z}_p}$.
Let p be an odd prime and let a be a positive integer. In this paper we investigate the sum $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}/m^k$ mod p^2, where h,m are p-adic integers with m\not=0 (mod p). For example, we show that if h\not=0 (mod p) and p^a>3 then $$ sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-h/2)^k =(\frac{1-2h}{p^a})(1+h((4h-2)^{p-1}/h^{p-1}-1)) (mod p^2),$$ where (-) denotes the Jacobi symbol. Here is another remarkable congruence: If p>3 then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{p^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-1)^k =3^{p-1}(\frac{p^a}3) (mod p^2).$$
In this article we study $p$-adic properties of sequences of integers (or $p$-adic integers) that satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. For such a sequence, we give an explicit approximate twisted interpolation to $\mathbb Z_p$. We then use this interpolation for two applications. The first is that certain subsequences of constant-recursive sequences converge $p$-adically. The second is that the density of the residues modulo $p^α$ attained by a constant-recursive sequence converges, as $α\to \infty$, to the Haar measure of a certain subset of $\mathbb Z_p$. To illustrate the…
We derive an inequality on the discrepancy of sequences on the ring of $p$-adic integers $\ZZ_p$ using techniques from Fourier analysis. The inequality is used to obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy of the sequence $α_n = na +b$, where $a$ and $b$ are elements of $\ZZ_p$. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the classical LeVeque inequality on the circle group $\RR/\ZZ$.
In this paper we study the factors of some alternating sums of products of binomial and q-binomial coefficients. We prove that for all positive integers n_1,...,n_m, n_{m+1}=n_1, and 0\leq j\leq m-1, {n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1}\sum_{k=-n_1}^{n_1}(-1)^kq^{jk^2+{k\choose 2}} \prod_{i=1}^m {n_i+n_{i+1}\brack n_i+k}\in \N[q], which generalizes a result of Calkin [Acta Arith. 86 (1998), 17--26]. Moreover, we show that for all positive integers n, r and j, {2n\brack n}^{-1}{2j\brack j} \sum_{k=j}^n(-1)^{n-k}q^{A}\frac{1-q^{2k+1}}{1-q^{n+k+1}} {2n\brack n-k}{k+j\brack k-j}^r\in N[q], where A=(r-1){n\c…
This work is a study of $p$-adic multiple zeta values at roots of unity ($p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s), the $p$-adic periods of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $(\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\})/ \mathbb{F}_{q}$. The main tool is new objects which we call $p$-adic pro-unipotent harmonic actions. In this part IV we define and study $p$-adic analogues of some elementary complex analytic functions which interpolate multiple zeta values at roots of unity such as the multiple zeta functions. The indices of $p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s involve sequences of positive integers ; in this IV-1, by consid…
In this paper we study recurrences concerning the combinatorial sum $[n,r]_m=\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}\binom {n}{k}$ and the alternate sum $\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}(-1)^{(k-r)/m}\binom{n}{k}$, where m>0, $n\ge 0$ and r are integers. For example, we show that if $n\ge m-1$ then $$\sum_{i=0}^{\lfloor(m-1)/2\rfloor}(-1)^i\binom{m-1-i}i [n-2i,r-i]_m=2^{n-m+1}.$$ We also apply such results to investigate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. Our approach depends heavily on an identity established by the author [Integers 2(2002)].
The explicit formulas of operations, in particular addition and multiplication, of $p $-adic integers are presented. As applications of the results, at first the explicit formulas of operations of Witt vectors with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ are given; then, through solving a problem of Browkin about the transformation between the coefficients of a $p$-adic integer expressed in the ordinary least residue system and the numerically least residue system, similar formulas for Witt vectors with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_{3}$ are obtained.
Let $a,b$ and $n$ be positive integers with $a>b$. In this note, we prove that $$(2bn+1)(2bn+3){2bn \choose bn}\bigg|3(a-b)(3a-b){2an \choose an}{an\choose bn}.$$ This confirms a recent conjecture of Amdeberhan and Moll.
In this article, we study several probabilistic properties of polynomials defined over the ring of $p$-adic integers under the Haar measure. First, we calculate the probability that a monic polynomial is separable, generalizing a result of Polak. Second, we introduce the notion of two polynomials being strongly coprime and calculate the probability of two monic polynomials {being} strongly coprime. Finally, we explain how our method can be used to extrapolate other probabilistic properties of polynomials over the ring of $p$-adic integers from polynomials defined over the integers modulo power…
We find upper and lower bounds on the number of rational points that are $ψ$-approximations of some $n$-dimensional $p$-adic integer. Lattice point counting techniques are used to find the upper bound result, and a Pigeon-hole principle style argument is used to find the lower bound result. We use these results to find the Hausdorff dimension for the set of $p$-adic weighted simultaneously approximable points intersected with $p$-adic coordinate hyperplanes. For the lower bound result we show that the set of rational points that $τ$-approximate a $p$-adic integer form a set of resonant points …
A practical number is a positive integer $n$ such that all positive integers less than $n$ can be written as a sum of distinct divisors of $n$. Leonetti and Sanna proved that, as $x \to +\infty$, the central binomial coefficient $\binom{2n}{n}$ is a practical number for all positive integers $n \leq x$ but at most $O(x^{0.88097})$ exceptions. We improve this result by reducing the number of exceptions to $\exp\!\big(C (\log x)^{4/5} \log \log x\big)$, where $C > 0$ is a constant.
We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a p-adic integer to have p-th root in the ring of p-adic integers. The same condition holds clearly for residues modulo p^k. We give a proof that Fermat's last theorem is false for p-adic integers and for residues mod p^k.
In Pacific J. Math. 292 (2018), 223-238, Shareshian and Woodroofe asked if for every positive integer $n$ there exist primes $p$ and $q$ such that, for all integers $k$ with $1 \leq k \leq n-1$, the binomial coefficient $\binom{n}{k}$ is divisible by at least one of $p$ or $q$. We give conditions under which a number $n$ has this property and discuss a variant of this problem involving more than two primes. We prove that every positive integer $n$ has infinitely many multiples with this property.
We provide some general conditions which ensure that a system of inequalities involving homogeneous polynomials with coefficients in a S-adic field has nontrivial S-integral solutions. The proofs are based on the strong approximation property for Zariski-dense subgroups and adelic geometry of numbers. We give two examples of applications for systems involving quadratic and linear forms.
The essential aim of this paper is to define weighted q-Hardy-littlewood-type maximal operator by means of p-adic q-invariant distribution on Zp. Moreover, we give some interesting properties concerning this type maximal operator.
A "practical number" is a positive integer $n$ such that every positive integer less than $n$ can be written as a sum of distinct divisors of $n$. We prove that most of the binomial coefficients are practical numbers. Precisely, letting $f(n)$ denote the number of binomial coefficients $\binom{n}{k}$, with $0 \leq k \leq n$, that are not practical numbers, we show that \begin{equation*} f(n) < n^{1 - (\log 2 - δ)/\log \log n} \end{equation*} for all integers $n \in [3, x]$, but at most $O_γ(x^{1 - (δ- γ) / \log \log x})$ exceptions, for all $x \geq 3$ and $0 < γ< δ< \log 2$. Furthermore, we pr…
Let $χ$ be an order $c$ multiplicative character of a finite field and $f(x)=x^d+λx^e$ a binomial with $(d,e)=1$. We study the twisted classical and $T$-adic Newton polygons of $f$. When $p>(d-e)(2d-1)$, we give a lower bound of Newton polygons and show that they coincide if $p$ does not divide a certain integral constant depending on $p\bmod {cd}$. We conjecture that this condition holds if $p$ is large enough with respect to $c,d$ by combining all known results and the conjecture given by Zhang-Niu. As an example, we show that it holds for $e=d-1$.
We introduce a hybridization of digital sequences with uniformly distributed sequences in the domain of $b$-adic integers, $\mathbb Z_{b}, b\in\mathbb N\setminus\{1\}$, by using such sequences as input for generating matrices. The generating matrices are then naturally required to have finite row-lengths. We exhibit some relations of the `classical' digital method to our extended version, and also give several examples of new constructions with their respective quality assessments in terms of $t,\mathbf T$ and discrepancy.
