Sofic groups were defined implicitly by Gromov in [Gr99] and explicitly by Weiss in [We00]. All residually finite groups (and hence every linear group) is sofic. The purpose of this paper is to introduce, for every countable sofic group $G$, a family of measure-conjugacy invariants for measure-preserving $G$-actions on probability spaces. These invariants generalize Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for actions of amenable groups. They are computed exactly for Bernoulli shifts over $G$, leading to a complete classification of Bernoulli systems up to measure-conjugacy for many groups including all countable linear groups. Recent rigidity results of Y. Kida and S. Popa are utilized to classify Bernoulli shifts over mapping class groups and property T groups up to orbit equivalence and von Neumann equivalence respectively.
We introduce mean dimensions for continuous actions of countable sofic groups on compact metrizable spaces. These generalize the Gromov-Lindenstrauss-Weiss mean dimensions for actions of countable amenable groups, and are useful for distinguishing continuous actions of countable sofic groups with infinite entropy.
As a variant of the equal entropy cover problem, we ask whether all multidimensional sofic shifts with countably many configurations have SFT covers with countably many configurations. We answer this question in the negative by presenting explicit counterexamples. We formulate necessary conditions for a vertically periodic shift space to have a countable SFT cover, and prove that they are sufficient in a natural (but quite restricted) subclass of shift spaces.
In previous work, I introduced a measure-conjugacy invariant for sofic group actions called sofic entropy. Here it is proven that the sofic entropy of an amenable group action equals its classical entropy. The proof uses a new measure-conjugacy invariant called upper-sofic entropy and a theorem of Rudolph and Weiss for the entropy of orbit-equivalent actions relative to the orbit change $σ$-algebra.
In this work we study the entropies of subsystems of shifts of finite type (SFTs) and sofic shifts on countable amenable groups. We prove that for any countable amenable group $G$, if $X$ is a $G$-SFT with positive topological entropy $h(X) > 0$, then the entropies of the SFT subsystems of $X$ are dense in the interval $[0, h(X)]$. In fact, we prove a "relative" version of the same result: if $X$ is a $G$-SFT and $Y \subset X$ is a subshift such that $h(Y) < h(X)$, then the entropies of the SFTs $Z$ for which $Y \subset Z \subset X$ are dense in $[h(Y), h(X)]$. We also establish analogous resu…
In this paper, we introduce topological pressure for continuous actions of countable sofic groups on compact metrizable spaces. This generalizes the classical topological pressure for continuous actions of countable amenable groups on such spaces. We also establish the variational principle for topological pressure in this sofic context.
In this article, we study countable sofic shifts of Cantor-Bendixson rank at most 2. We prove that their conjugacy problem is complete for GI, the complexity class of graph isomorphism, and that the existence problems of block maps, factor maps and embeddings are NP-complete.
Recently Lewis Bowen introduced a notion of entropy for measure-preserving actions of countable sofic groups admitting a generating measurable partition with finite entropy; and then David Kerr and Hanfeng Li developed an operator-algebraic approach to actions of countable sofic groups not only on a standard probability space but also on a compact metric space, and established the global variational principle concerning measure-theoretic and topological entropy in this sofic context. By localizing these two kinds of entropy, in this paper we prove a local version of the global variational prin…
Let $G$ be a countable discrete sofic group. We define a concept of uniform mixing for measure-preserving $G$-actions and show that it implies completely positive sofic entropy. When $G$ contains an element of infinite order, we use this to produce an uncountable family of pairwise nonisomorphic $G$-actions with completely positive sofic entropy. None of our examples is a factor of a Bernoulli shift.
We continue the study of Rokhlin entropy, an isomorphism invariant for probability-measure-preserving actions of countable groups introduced in Part I. In this paper we prove a non-ergodic finite generator theorem and use it to establish sub-additivity and semi-continuity properties of Rokhlin entropy. We also obtain formulas for Rokhlin entropy in terms of ergodic decompositions and inverse limits. Finally, we clarify the relationship between Rokhlin entropy, sofic entropy, and classical Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy. In particular, using Rokhlin entropy we give a new proof of the fact that ergod…
Realization of $d$-dimensional effective subshifts as projective sub-actions of $d+d'$-dimensional sofic subshifts for $d'\geq 1$ is now well know~\cite{Hochman-2009,Durand-Romashchenko-Shen-2010,Aubrun-Sablik-2010}. In this paper we are interested in the speed of convergence of this realization. That is to say given an effective subshift $Σ$ realized as projective sub-action of a sofic $\T$, we study the function which on input an integer $k$ returns the smallest width of the strip which verify the local rules of $\T$ necessary to obtain exclusively the language of size $k$ of $Σ$ in the cent…
We show that, for countable sofic groups, a Bernoulli action with infinite entropy base has infinite entropy with respect to every sofic approximation sequence. This builds on the work of Lewis Bowen in the case of finite entropy base and completes the computation of measure entropy for Bernoulli actions over countable sofic groups. One consequence is that such a Bernoulli action fails to have a generating countable partition with finite entropy if the base has infinite entropy, which in the amenable case is well known and in the case that the acting group contains the free group on two genera…
The concept of independence entropy for symbolic dynamical systems was introduced in [LMP13]. This notion of entropy measures the extent to which one can freely insert symbols in positions without violating the constraints defined by the shift space. Independence entropy is not invariant under topological conjugacy. We define an invariant version of the independence entropy by setting sup h_{ind}(X) = sup{h_{ind}(Y )|Y ' X}. This invariant is bounded above by the topological entropy. We prove that equality sup h_{ind}(X) = h(X) holds for all sofic shift spaces over Z, then we give an example s…
Given an ergodic probability measure preserving dynamical system $\G\acts (X,μ)$, where $\G$ is a finitely generated countable group, we show that the asymptotic growth of the number of finite models for the dynamics, in the sense of sofic approximations, is an invariant of orbit equivalence. We then prove an additivity formula for free products with amenable (possibly trivial) amalgamation. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial proofs of several results in orbit equivalence theory.
The class of normal subshifts includes irreducible infinite topological Markov shifts, irreducible infinite sofic shifts, synchronized systems, Dyck shifts, $β$-shifts, substitution minimal shifts, and so on. We will characterize one-sided topological conjugacy classes of normal subshifts in terms of the associated $C^*$-algebras and its gauge actions with potentials.
A probability-measure-preserving transformation has the Weak Pinsker Property (WPP) if for every $ε>0$ it is measurably conjugate to the direct product of a transformation with entropy $<ε$ and a Bernoulli shift. In a recent breakthrough, Tim Austin proved that every ergodic transformation satisfies this property. Moreover, the natural analog for amenable group actions is also true. By contrast, this paper provides a counterexample in which the group $Γ$ is a non-abelian free group and the notion of entropy is sofic entropy. The counterexample is a limit of hardcore models on random regular gr…
Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy is an invariant of measure-preserving actions of the group of integers that is central to classification theory. There are two recently developed invariants, sofic entropy and Rokhlin entropy, that generalize classical entropy to actions of countable groups. These new theories have counterintuitive properties such as factor maps that increase entropy. This survey article focusses on examples, many of which have not appeared before, that highlight the differences and similarities with classical theory.
In a previous paper the authors developed an operator-algebraic approach to Lewis Bowen's sofic measure entropy that yields invariants for actions of countable sofic groups by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space and by measure-preserving transformations on a standard probability space. We show here that these measure and topological entropy invariants both coincide with their classical counterparts when the acting group is amenable.
Recently Lewis Bowen introduced a notion of entropy for measure-preserving actions of a countable sofic group on a standard probability space admitting a generating partition with finite entropy. By applying an operator algebra perspective we develop a more general approach to sofic entropy which produces both measure and topological dynamical invariants, and we establish the variational principle in this context. In the case of residually finite groups we use the variational principle to compute the topological entropy of principal algebraic actions whose defining group ring element is invert…
Countable state Markov shifts are a natural generalization of the well-known subshifts of finite type. They are the subject of current research both for their own sake and as models for smooth dynamical systems. In this paper, we investigate their almost isomorphism and entropy conjugacy and obtain a complete classification for the especially important class of strongly positive recurrent Markov shifts. This gives a complete classification up to entropy conjugacy of the natural extensions of smooth entropy expanding maps, including all smooth interval maps with non-zero topological entropy.
A sofic approximation to a countable group is a sequence of partial actions on finite sets that asymptotically approximates the action of the group on itself by left-translations. A group is sofic if it admits a sofic approximation. Sofic entropy theory is a generalization of classical entropy theory in dynamics to actions by sofic groups. However, the sofic entropy of an action may depend on a choice of sofic approximation. All previously known examples showing this dependence rely on degenerate behavior. This paper exhibits an explicit example of a mixing subshift of finite type with two dif…
Given a countable sofic group $Γ$, a finite alphabet $A$, a subshift $X \subseteq A^Γ$, and a potential $ϕ: X \to \mathbb{R}$, we give sufficient conditions on $X$ and $ϕ$ for expressing, in the uniqueness regime, the sofic entropy of the associated Gibbs measure $μ$ as the limit of the Shannon entropies of some suitable finite systems approximating $Γ\curvearrowright (X,μ)$. Next, we prove that if $μ$ satisfies strong spatial mixing, then the sofic pressure admits a formula in terms of the integral of a random information function with respect to any $Γ$-invariant Borel probability measure wi…
We study an invariant of dynamical systems called naive entropy, which is defined for both measurable and topological actions of any countable group. We focus on nonamenable groups, in which case the invariant is two-valued, with every system having naive entropy either zero or infinity. Bowen has conjectured that when the acting group is sofic, zero naive entropy implies sofic entropy at most zero for both types of systems. We prove the topological version of this conjecture by showing that for every action of a sofic group by homeomorphisms of a compact metric space, zero naive entropy impli…
We prove that if a free ergodic action of a countably infinite group has positive Rokhlin entropy (or, less generally, positive sofic entropy) then it factors onto all Bernoulli shifts of lesser or equal entropy. This extends to all countably infinite groups the well-known Sinai factor theorem from classical entropy theory.
In this work, we study pmp actions of countable groups on arbitrary diffuse probability spaces under the point of view of weak equivalence. We will show that any such an action is weakly equivalent to an action on a standard probability space. We also propose a metric on the space of actions modulo weak equivalence which is equivalent to the topology of Abért and Elek. We will give a simpler proof of the compactness of the space, showing that convergence is characterized by ultraproducts. Using this topology, we will show that a profinite action is weakly equivalent to an ultraproduct of finit…
We prove that a topologically predictable action of a countable amenable group has zero topological entropy, as conjectured by Hochman. On route, we investigate invariant random orders and formulate a unified Kieffer-Pinsker formula for the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of measure preserving actions of amenable groups. We also present a proof due to Weiss for the fact that topologically prime actions of sofic groups have non-positive topological sofic entropy.
In this note, we analyze the classification problem for compact metrizable $G$-ambits for a countable discrete group $G$ from the point of view of descriptive set theory. More precisely, we prove that the topological conjugacy relation on the standard Borel space of compact metrizable $G$-ambits is Borel for every countable discrete group $G$.
We study the complexity of the classification problem of conjugacy on dynamical systems on some compact metrizable spaces. Especially we prove that the conjugacy equivalence relation of interval dynamical systems is Borel bireducible to isomorphism equivalence relation of countable graphs. This solves a special case of the Hjorth's conjecture which states that every orbit equivalence relation induced by a continuous action of the group of all homeomorphisms of the closed unit interval is classifiable by countable structures. We also prove that conjugacy equivalence relation of Hilbert cube hom…
Associated to any orthogonal representation of a countable discrete group is an probability measure-preserving action called the Gaussian action. Using the Polish model formalism we developed before, we compute the entropy (in the sense of Bowen, Kerr-Li) of Gaussian actions when the group is sofic. Computations of entropy for Gaussian actions has only been done when the acting group is abelian and thus our results are new even in the amenable case. Fundamental to our approach are methods of noncommutative harmonic analysis and $C^{*}$-algebras which replace the Fourier analysis used in the ab…
We prove that if two topologically free and entropy regular actions of countable sofic groups on compact metrizable spaces are continuously orbit equivalent, and each group either (i) contains a w-normal amenable subgroup which is neither locally finite nor virtually cyclic, or (ii) is a non-locally-finite product of two infinite groups, then the actions have the same sofic topological entropy. This fact is then used to show that if two free uniquely ergodic and entropy regular probability-measure-preserving actions of such groups are boundedly orbit equivalent then the actions have the same s…
In 1987, Ornstein and Weiss discovered that the Bernoulli $2$-shift over the rank two free group factors onto the seemingly larger Bernoulli $4$-shift. With the recent creation of an entropy theory for actions of sofic groups (in particular free groups), their example shows the surprising fact that entropy can increase under factor maps. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we study a natural generalization of the Ornstein--Weiss map for countable groups. We relate the increase in entropy to the cost and to the first $\ell^2$-Betti number of the group. More generally, we study coboun…
Previous work introduced two measure-conjugacy invariants: the $f$-invariant (for actions of free groups) and $Σ$-entropy (for actions of sofic groups). The purpose of this paper is to show that the $f$-invariant is a special case of $Σ$-entropy. There are two applications: the $f$-invariant is invariant under group automorphisms and there is a uniform lower bound on the $f$-invariant of a factor in terms of the original system.
A countable discrete group $G$ is called Choquet-Deny if for every non-degenerate probability measure $μ$ on $G$ it holds that all bounded $μ$-harmonic functions are constant. We show that a finitely generated group $G$ is Choquet-Deny if and only if it is virtually nilpotent. For general countable discrete groups, we show that $G$ is Choquet-Deny if and only if none of its quotients has the infinite conjugacy class property. Moreover, when $G$ is not Choquet-Deny, then this is witnessed by a symmetric, finite entropy, non-degenerate measure.
A group is said to be strongly amenable if each of its proximal topological actions has a fixed point. We show that a finitely generated group is strongly amenable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent. More generally, a countable discrete group is strongly amenable if and only if none of its quotients have the infinite conjugacy class property.
In this paper, we study the descriptive set theoretic complexity of the equivalence relation of conjugacy of Toeplitz subshifts of a residually finite group $G$. On the one hand, we show that if $G = \mathbb{Z}$, then topological conjugacy on Toeplitz subshifts with separated holes is amenable. In contrast, if $G$ is non-amenable, then conjugacy of Toeplitz $G$-subshifts is a non-amenable equivalence relation. The results were motivated by a general question, asked by Gao, Jackson and Seward, about the complexity of conjugacy for minimal, free subshifts of countable groups.
We say that two free probability-measure-preserving actions of countable groups are Shannon orbit equivalent if there is an orbit equivalence between them whose associated cocycle partitions have finite Shannon entropy. We show that if the acting groups are sofic and each has a w-normal amenable subgroup which is neither locally finite nor virtually cyclic then Shannon orbit equivalence implies that the actions have the same maximum sofic entropy. This extends a result of Austin beyond the finitely generated amenable setting and has the consequence that two Bernoulli actions of a group with th…
We describe a self-homeomorphism $R$ of the Cantor set $X$ and then show that its conjugacy class in the Polish group $H(X)$ of all homeomorphisms of $X$ forms a dense $G_δ$ subset of $H(X)$. We also provide an example of a locally compact, second countable topological group which has a dense conjugacy class.
We study a measure entropy for finitely generated free group actions called f-invariant entropy. The f-invariant entropy was developed by Lewis Bowen and is essentially a special case of his measure entropy theory for actions of sofic groups. In this paper we relate the f-invariant entropy of a finitely generated free group action to the f-invariant entropy of the restricted action of a subgroup. We show that the ratio of these entropies equals the index of the subgroup. This generalizes a well known formula for the Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy of amenable group actions. We then extend the defini…
Building on work of Popa, Ioana, and Epstein--Törnquist, we show that, for every nonamenable countable discrete group $Γ$, the relations of conjugacy, orbit equivalence, and von Neumann equivalence of free ergodic (or weak mixing) measure preserving actions of $Γ$ on the standard atomless probability space are not Borel, thus answering questions of Kechris. This is an optimal and definitive result, which establishes a neat dichotomy with the amenable case, since any two free ergodic actions of an amenable group on the standard atomless probability space are orbit equivalent by classical result…
We establish criteria for turbulence in certain spaces of C*-algebra representations and apply this to the problem of nonclassifiability by countable structures for group actions on a standard atomless probability space (X,μ) and on the hyperfinite II_1 factor R. We also prove that the conjugacy action on the space of free actions of a countably infinite amenable group on R is turbulent, and that the conjugacy action on the space of ergodic measure-preserving flows on (X,μ) is generically turbulent.
Let $Λ$ be a countably infinite property (T) group, and let $D$ be UHF-algebra of infinite type. We prove that there exists a continuum of pairwise non (weakly) cocycle conjugate, strongly outer actions of $Λ$ on $D$. The proof consists in assigning, to any second countable abelian pro-$p$ group $G$, a strongly outer action of $Λ$ on $D$ whose (weak) cocycle conjugacy class completely remembers the group $G$. The group $G$ is reconstructed from the action through its (weak) 1-cohomology set endowed with a canonical pairing function. Our construction also shows the following stronger statement:…
In this short note we construct two countable, infinite conjugacy class groups which admit free, ergodic, probability measure preserving orbit equivalent actions, but whose group von Neumann algebras are not (stably) isomorphic.
In this paper we study the dynamics of Bernoulli flows and their subflows over general countable groups from the symbolic and topological perspectives. We study free subflows (subflows in which every point has trivial stabilizer), minimal subflows, disjointness of subflows, the problem of classifying subflows up to topological conjugacy, and the differences in dynamical behavior between pairs of points which disagree on finitely many coordinates. We call a point hyper aperiodic if the closure of its orbit is a free subflow and we call it minimal if the closure of its orbit is a minimal subflow…
We study topological properties of conjugacy classes in Polish groups, with emphasis on automorphism groups of homogeneous countable structures. We first consider the existence of dense conjugacy classes (the topological Rokhlin property). We then characterize when an automorphism group admits a comeager conjugacy class (answering a question of Truss) and apply this to show that the homeomorphism group of the Cantor space has a comeager conjugacy class (answering a question of Akin-Hurley-Kennedy). Finally, we study Polish groups that admit comeager conjugacy classes in any dimension (in which…
In a prior paper, the author generalized the classical factor theorem of Sinai to actions of arbitrary countably infinite groups. In the present paper, we use this theorem and the techniques of its proof in order to study connections between positive entropy phenomena and the Koopman representation. Following the line of work initiated by Hayes for sofic entropy, we show in a certain precise manner that all positive entropy must come from portions of the Koopman representation that embed into the left-regular representation. By combining this result with the generalized factor theorem of the p…
