We study an invariant of dynamical systems called naive entropy, which is defined for both measurable and topological actions of any countable group. We focus on nonamenable groups, in which case the invariant is two-valued, with every system having naive entropy either zero or infinity. Bowen has conjectured that when the acting group is sofic, zero naive entropy implies sofic entropy at most zero for both types of systems. We prove the topological version of this conjecture by showing that for every action of a sofic group by homeomorphisms of a compact metric space, zero naive entropy implies sofic entropy at most zero. This result and the simple definition of naive entropy allow us to show that the generic action of a free group on the Cantor set has sofic entropy at most zero. We observe that a distal $Γ$-system has zero naive entropy in both senses, if $Γ$ has an element of infinite order. We also show that the naive entropy of a topological system is greater than or equal to the naive measure entropy of the same system with respect to any invariant measure.
We study the independence density for finite families of finite tuples of sets for continuous actions of discrete groups on compact metrizable spaces. We use it to show that actions with positive naive entropy are Li-Yorke chaotic and untame. In particular, distal actions have zero naive entropy. This answers a question of Lewis Bowen.
In this paper we study topological entropy and recurrence properties of non-autonomous dynamical system generated by a family of continuous self maps on a compact space X. Specially, we introduce the pseudo-entropy and periodic-pseudo-entropy and prove their equivalence with the topological entropy for non-autonomous dynamical systems.
In this paper, we study the Feldman-Katok metric in random dynamical systems and establish corresponding fiber topological entropy formula, Brin-Katok local entropy formula and fiber Katok entropy formula by replacing Bowen metric with Feldman-Katok metric. It turns out that the Feldman-Katok metric is also the weakest metric that makes the entropy formulae valid on random dynamical systems.
Measure-theoretic and topological entropy are classical invariants in the theory of dynamical systems. There are several recently developed entropy type invariants for systems of sub-exponential growth: sequence entropy, slow entropy, Kakutani invariants, scaled entropy, entropy dimensions and entropy convergence rate. They measure the complexity of zero entropy systems by different approaches. These new invariants and corresponding new theories have many applications and interesting properties. This survey paper gives a comprehensive exposition of the slow entropy theory and also discusses so…
We derive sufficient conditions for a dynamical systems to have a set of irregular points with full topological entropy. Such conditions are verified for some nonuniformly hyperbolic systems such as positive entropy surface diffeomorphisms and rational functions on the Riemann sphere.
Under the assumption of the gluing orbit property, equivalent conditions to having zero topological entropy are investigated. In particular, we show that a dynamical system has the gluing orbit property and zero topological entropy if and only if it is minimal and equicontinuous.
We introduce a new concept of finite-time entropy which is a local version of the classical concept of metric entropy. Based on that, a finite-time version of Pesin's entropy formula and also an explicit formula of finite-time entropy for $2$-D systems are derived. We also discuss about how to apply the finite-time entropy field to detect special dynamical structures such as Lagrangian coherent structures.
We present a series of statements about scaling entropy, a metric invariant of dynamical systems proposed by A. M. Vershik in the late 90's. We show that it is a metric invariant indeed and calculate it in several special cases.
Different notions of entropy play a fundamental role in the classical theory of dynamical systems. Unlike many other concepts used to analyze autonomous dynamics, both measure-theoretic and topological entropy can be extended quite naturally to discrete-time nonautonomous dynamical systems given in the process formulation. This paper provides an overview of the author's work on this subject. Also an example is presented that has not appeared before in the literature.
A topological dynamical system $(X,f)$ induces two natural systems, one is on the probability measure spaces and other one is on the hyperspace. We introduce a concept for these two spaces, which is called entropy order, and prove that it coincides with topological entropy of $(X,f)$. We also consider the entropy order of an invariant measure and a variational principle is established.
We propose a new definition of preimage entropy dimension for continuous maps on compact metric spaces, investigate fundamental properties of the preimage entropy dimension, and compare the preimage entropy dimension with the topological entropy dimension. The defined preimage entropy dimension holds various basic properties of topological entropy dimension, for example, the preimage entropy dimension of a subsystem is bounded by that of the original system and topologically conjugated systems have the same preimage entropy dimension. Also, we discuss the relation between the preimage entropy …
Ovadia and Rodriguez-Hertz (Neutralized local entropy, arXiv:2302.10874) defined the neutralized Bowen open ball for an autonomous dynamical system on a compact metric space. Replacing the usual Bowen open ball with neutralized Bowen open ball, we introduce the notions of neutralized Bowen topological entropy of subsets, neutralized weighted Bowen topological entropy of subsets, lower neutralized Brin-Katok's local entropy of Borel probability measures, and neutralized Katok's entropy of Borel probability measures for a non-autonomous dynamical system on a compact metric space. Then, we establ…
In this paper, we study the complicated dynamics of infinite dimensional random dynamical systems which include deterministic dynamical systems as their special cases in a Polish space. Without assuming any hyperbolicity, we proved if a continuous random map has a positive topological entropy, then it contains a topological horseshoe. We also show that the positive topological entropy implies the chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke. The complicated behavior exhibiting here is induced by the positive entropy but not the randomness of the system.
We study the connection between the Lyapunov exponents and the volume growth of boundary distortion of regions in the phase space of the dynamical system.
We study chaotic properties of uniformly convergent nonautonomous dynamical systems. We show that, contrary to the autonomous systems on the compact interval, positivity of topological sequence entropy and occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos are not equivalent, more precisely, neither of the two possible implications is true.
We introduce the notion of metric entropy for a nonautonomous dynamical system given by a sequence of probability spaces and a sequence of measure-preserving maps between these spaces. This notion generalizes the classical concept of metric entropy established by Kolmogorov and Sinai, and is related via a variational inequality to the topological entropy of nonautonomous systems as defined by Kolyada, Misiurewicz and Snoha. Moreover, it shares several properties with the classical notion of metric entropy. In particular, invariance with respect to appropriately defined isomorphisms, a power ru…
We systematically investigate examples of non-hyperbolic dynamical systems having irregular sets of full topological entropy and full Hausdorff dimension. The examples include some partially hyperbolic systems and geometric Lorenz flows. We also pose interesting questions for future research.
We show that for every topological dynamical system with the approximate product property, zero topological entropy is equivalent to unique ergodicity. Equivalence of minimality is also proved under a slightly stronger condition. Moreover, we show that unique ergodicity implies the approximate product property if the system has periodic points.
For any $C^1$ diffeomorphism on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold that admits an ergodic measure with positive entropy, a lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension for the local stable and unstable sets is given in terms of the measure-theoretic entropy and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The mainline of our approach to this result is under the settings of topological dynamical systems, which is also applicable to infinite dimensional $C^1$ dynamical systems.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a $C^2$ random partially hyperbolic dynamical system. For the unstable foliation, the corresponding unstable metric entropy, unstable topological entropy and unstable pressure via the dynamics of $\mathcal{F}$ on the unstable foliation are introduced and investigated. A version of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman Theorem for unstable metric entropy is given, and a variational principle for unstable pressure (and hence for unstable entropy) is obtained. Moreover, as an application of the variational principle, equilibrium states for the unstable pressure including Gibbs $u$-states …
This paper has a flaw in an argument that uses the weak-* convergence of measures. The paper was replaced by "Entropy and Its Variational Principle for Locally Compact Metrizable Systems", by the same authors.
This paper discusses the variational principles on subsets for topological pressure and topological entropy of non-autonomous dynamical systems. We define the Pesin-Pitskel topological pressure (weighted topological pressure) and the Bowen topological entropy (weighted Bowen topological entropy) for any subset. Also, we define the measure-theoretic pressure and the measure-theoretic lower entropy for all Borel probability measures. Then, we prove variational principles for topological pressure (topological entropy) which links the Pesin-Pitskel topological pressure (weighted topological pressu…
In this paper we extend the notion of a continuous bundle random dynamical system to the setting where the action of $\R$ or $\N$ is replaced by the action of an infinite countable discrete amenable group. Given such a system, and a monotone sub-additive invariant family of random continuous functions, we introduce the concept of local fiber topological pressure and establish an associated variational principle, relating it to measure-theoretic entropy. We also discuss some variants of this variational principle. We introduce both topological and measure-theoretic entropy tuples for continuous…
In this paper we advance the entropy theory of discrete nonautonomous dynamical systems that was initiated by Kolyada and Snoha in 1996. The first part of the paper is devoted to the measure-theoretic entropy theory of general topological systems. We derive several conditions guaranteeing that an initial probability measure, when pushed forward by the system, produces an invariant measure sequence whose entropy captures the dynamics on arbitrarily fine scales. In the second part of the paper, we apply the general theory to the nonstationary subshifts of finite type, introduced by Fisher and Ar…
We study the recurrence to mistake dynamical balls, that is, dynamical balls that admit some errors and whose proportion of errors decrease tends to zero with the length of the dynamical ball. We prove, under mild assumptions, that the measure-theoretic entropy coincides with the exponential growth rate of return times to mistake dynamical balls and that minimal return times to mistake dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Moreover we obtain averaged recurrence formula for subshifts of finite type and suspension semiflows. Applications include $β$-transformations, Axiom A fl…
Let $\mathcal{M}(X)$ be the space of Borel probability measures on a compact metric space $X$ endowed with the weak$^\ast$-topology. In this paper, we prove that if the topological entropy of a nonautonomous dynamical system $(X,\{f_n\}_{n=1}^{+\infty})$ vanishes, then so does that of its induced system $(\mathcal{M}(X),\{f_n\}_{n=1}^{+\infty})$; moreover, once the topological entropy of $(X,\{f_n\}_{n=1}^{+\infty})$ is positive, that of its induced system $(\mathcal{M}(X),\{f_n\}_{n=1}^{+\infty})$ jumps to infinity. In contrast to Bowen's inequality, we construct a nonautonomous dynamical sys…
We give an algorithm, based on the $ϕ$-expansion of Parry, in order to compute the topological entropy of a class of shift spaces. The idea is the solve an inverse problem for the dynamical systems $βx+α\mod1$.The first part is an exposition of the $ϕ$-expansion applied to piecewise monotone dynamical systems. We formulate for the validity of the $ϕ$-expansion, necessary and sufficient conditions, which are different from those in Parry's paper.
We consider stationary ergodic processes indexed by $\mathbb Z$ or $\mathbb Z^n$ whose finite dimensional marginals have laws which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We define an entropy theory for these continuous processes, prove an analog of the Shannon Breiman Mac Millan theorem and study more precisely the particular example of Gaussian processes.
We explore the concept of metastability in random dynamical systems, focussing on connections between random Perron-Frobenius operator cocycles and escape rates of random maps, and on topological entropy of random shifts of finite type. The Lyapunov spectrum of the random Perron-Frobenius cocycle and the random adjacency matrix cocycle is used to decompose the random system into two disjoint random systems with rigorous upper and lower bounds on (i) the escape rate in the setting of random maps, and (ii) topological entropy in the setting of random shifts of finite type, respectively.
This work dynamically classifies a 9-parametric family of birational maps f : C2 -> C2. From the sequence of the degrees dn of the iterates of f, we find the dynamical degree delta(f) of f. We identify when dn grows periodically, linearly, quadratically or exponentially. The considered family includes the birational maps studied by Bedford and Kim in [4] as one of its subfamilies.
We consider the category of partially observable dynamical systems, to which the entropy theory of dynamical systems extends functorially. This leads us to introduce quotient-topological entropy. We discuss the structure that emerges. We show how quotient entropy can be explicitly computed by symbolic coding. To do so, we make use of the relationship between the category of dynamical systems and the category of graphs, a connection mediated by Markov partitions and topological Markov chains.
We study dynamics of continuous maps on compact metrizable spaces containing a free interval (i.e., an open subset homeomorphic to an open interval). A special attention is paid to relationships between topological transitivity, weak and strong topological mixing, dense periodicity and topological entropy as well as to the topological structure of minimal sets. In particular, a trichotomy for minimal sets and a dichotomy for transitive maps are proved.
Let $M$ be a compact Riemannian manifold. The set $\text{F}^{r}(M)$ consisting of sequences $(f_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{Z}}$ of $C^{r}$-diffeomorphisms on $M$ can be endowed with the compact topology or with the strong topology. A notion of topological entropy is given for these sequences. I will prove this entropy is discontinuous at each sequence if we consider the compact topology on $\text{F}^{r}(M)$. On the other hand, if $ r\geq 1$ and we consider the strong topology on $\text{F}^{r}(M)$, this entropy is a continuous map.
The ordinal approach to evaluate time series due to innovative works of Bandt and Pompe has increasingly established itself among other techniques of nonlinear time series analysis. In this paper, we summarize and generalize the theory of determining the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of a measure-preserving dynamical system via increasing sequences of order generated partitions of the state space. Our main focus are measuring processes without information loss. Particularly, we consider the question of the minimal necessary number of measurements related to the properties of a given dynamical syste…
In this paper, we focus on some properties, calculations and estimations of topological entropy for a nonautonomous dynamical system $(X,f_{0,\infty})$ generated by a sequence of continuous self-maps $f_{0,\infty}=\{f_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ on a compact uniform space $X$. We obtain the relations of topological entropy among $(X, f_{0,\infty})$, its $k$-th product system and its $n$-th iteration system. We confirm that the entropy of $(X, f_{0,\infty})$ equals to that of $f_{0,\infty}$ restricted to its non-wandering set provided that $f_{0,\infty}$ is equi-continuous. We prove that the entropy of…
The term "overlapping" refers to a certain fairly simple type of piecewise continuous function from the unit interval to itself and also to a fairly simple type of iterated function system (IFS) on the unit interval. A correspondence between these two classes of objects is used (1) to find a necessary and sufficient condition for a fractal transformation from the attractor of one overlapping IFS to the attractor of another overlapping IFS to be a homeomorphism and (2) to find a formula for the topological entropy of the dynamical system associated with an overlapping function.
We investigate the connection between the entropy of equilibrium measures and game-theoretic equilibrium feedback operators in a multi-channel dynamical system. Specifically, we show that the existence of an equilibrium measure, which maximizes the free energy (i.e., the sum of the entropy and the integral over a potential), is related to an equilibrium or "maximum entropy" state for the multi-channel dynamical system that is composed with a set of feedback operators. Further, we observe that such a connection makes sense when this set of feedback operators strategically interacts over an infi…
In this note we study the entropy spectrum of rotation classes for collections of finitely many continuous potentials $φ_1,\dots,φ_m:X\to \mathbb{R}$ with respect to the set of invariant measures of an underlying dynamical system $f:X\to X$. We show for large classes of dynamical systems and potentials that these entropy spectra are maximal in the sense that every value between zero and the maximum is attained. We also provide criteria that imply the maximality of the ergodic entropy spectra. For $m$ being large, our results can be interpreted as a complimentary result to the classical Riesz r…
For the study of chaotic dynamics and dimension of attractors the concepts of the Lyapunov exponents was found useful and became widely spread. Such characteristics of chaotic behavior, as the Lyapunov dimension and the entropy rate, can be estimated via the Lyapunov exponents. In this work an analytical approach to the study of the Lyapunov dimension, convergency and entropy for a dynamical model of Chua memristor circuit is demonstrated.
It is proved that whenever a zero entropy dynamical system $(X,T)$ has only countably many ergodic measures and $μ$ stands for the arithmetic M{ö}bius function, then there exists a subset $A$ of integers depending only on the system, of logarithmic density one, such that for each $f$ continuous on $X$, $\frac1N \sum_{n\leq N} f(T^nx)μ(n) \to 0$ as $N\to\infty$, $N\in A$, uniformly in $x\in X$. In particular, the density version of M{ö}bius orthogonality holds.
To a dynamical system is attached a non-negative real number called entropy. In 1990, Lind, Schmidt and Ward proved that the entropy for the dynamical system induced by the Laurent polynomial algebra over the ring of the rational integers is described by the Mahler measure. In 2009, Deninger introduced the $p$-adic entropy and obtained a $p$-adic analogue of Lind-Schmidt-Ward's theorem by using the $p$-adic Mahler measures. In this paper, we prove the existence and the explicit formula about $p$-adic entropies for two dynamical systems; one is induced by the Laurent polynomial algebra over the…
Topological entropy is not lower semi-continous: small perturbation of the dynamical system can lead to a collapse of entropy. In this note we show that for some special classes of dynamical systems (geodesic flows, Reeb flows, positive contactomorphisms) topological entropy at least is stable in the sense that there exists a nontrivial continuous lower bound, given that a certain homological invariant grows exponentially.
The paper is devoted to the analysis of relationships between principal objects of the spectral theory of dynamical systems (transfer and weighted shift operators) and basic characteristics of information theory and thermodynamic formalism (entropy and topological pressure). We present explicit formulae linking these objects with $t$-entropy and spectral potential. Herewith we uncover the role of inverse rami-rate, forward entropy along with essential set and the property of non-contractibility of a dynamical system.
In a previous paper the authors developed an operator-algebraic approach to Lewis Bowen's sofic measure entropy that yields invariants for actions of countable sofic groups by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space and by measure-preserving transformations on a standard probability space. We show here that these measure and topological entropy invariants both coincide with their classical counterparts when the acting group is amenable.
In the context of state estimation under communication constraints, several notions of dynamical entropy play a fundamental role, among them: topological entropy and restoration entropy. In this paper, we present a theorem which demonstrates that for most dynamical systems restoration entropy strictly exceeds topological entropy. This implies that robust estimation policies in general require a higher rate of data transmission than non-robust ones. The proof of our theorem is quite short, but uses sophisticated tools from the theory of smooth dynamical systems.
