In this note we study the entropy spectrum of rotation classes for collections of finitely many continuous potentials $φ_1,\dots,φ_m:X\to \mathbb{R}$ with respect to the set of invariant measures of an underlying dynamical system $f:X\to X$. We show for large classes of dynamical systems and potentials that these entropy spectra are maximal in the sense that every value between zero and the maximum is attained. We also provide criteria that imply the maximality of the ergodic entropy spectra. For $m$ being large, our results can be interpreted as a complimentary result to the classical Riesz representation theorem in the dynamical context.
We show that if $f$ is an annular homeomorphism admitting an attractor which is an irreducible annular continua with two different rotation numbers, then the entropy of $f$ is positive. Further, the entropy is shown to be associated to a $C^0$-robust rotational horseshoe. On the other hand, we construct examples of annular homeomorphisms with such attractors so that the rotation interval is uniformly large but the entropy approaches zero as much as desired. The developed techniques allow us to obtain similar results in the context of Birkhoff attractors.
In 1991 Llibre and MacKay proved that if $f$ is a 2-torus homeomorphism isotopic to identity and the rotation set of $f$ has a non empty interior then $f$ has positive topological entropy. Here, we give a converselike theorem. We show that the interior of the rotation set of a 2-torus $C^{1+ α}$ diffeomorphism isotopic to identity of positive topological entropy is not empty, under the additional hypotheses that $f$ is topologically transitive and irreducible. We also give examples that show that these hypotheses are necessary.
In this paper we prove the $C^1$-density of every $C^r$-conjugacy class in the closed subset of diffeomorphisms of the circle with a given irrational rotation number.
For a continuous map $f$ on a compact metric space we study the geometry and entropy of the generalized rotation set $\R(Φ)$. Here $Φ=(ϕ_1,...,ϕ_m)$ is a $m$-dimensional continuous potential and $\R(Φ)$ is the set of all $μ$-integrals of $Φ$ and $μ$ runs over all $f$-invariant probability measures. It is easy to see that the rotation set is a compact and convex subset of $\bR^m$. We study the question if every compact and convex set is attained as a rotation set of a particular set of potentials within a particular class of dynamical systems. We give a positive answer in the case of subshifts …
We extend rotation theory of circle maps to tiling spaces. Specifically, we consider a 1-dimensional tiling space $Ω$ with finite local complexity and study self-maps $F$ that are homotopic to the identity and whose displacements are strongly pattern equivariant (sPE). In place of the familiar rotation number we define a cohomology class $[μ]$. We prove existence and uniqueness results for this class, develop a notion of irrationality, and prove an analogue of Poncaré's Theorem: If $[μ]$ is irrational, then $F$ is semi-conjugate to uniform translation on a space $Ω_μ$ of tilings that is homeom…
We show that non-trivial chain recurrent classes for generic $C^1$ star flows satisfy a dichotomy: either they have zero topological entropy, or they must be isolated. Moreover, chain recurrent classes for generic star flows with zero entropy must be sectional hyperbolic, and cannot be detected by any non-trivial ergodic invariant probability. As a result, we show that $C^1$ generic star flows have only finitely many Lyapunov stable chain recurrent classes.
Entropy dimension is an entropy-type quantity which takes values in $[0,1]$ and classifies different levels of intermediate growth rate of complexity for dynamical systems. In this paper, we consider the complexity of skew products of irrational rotations with Bernoulli systems, which can be viewed as deterministic walks in random sceneries, and show that this class of models can have any given entropy dimension by choosing suitable rotations for the base system.
We prove that the polynomial entropy of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle equals 1 when the homeomorphism is not conjugate to a rotation and that it is 0 otherwise. In a second part we prove that the polynomial entropy of a flow on the two dimensional torus associated with a $C^1$ nonvanishing vector field is less that $1$. We moreover prove that when the flow possesses periodic orbits its polynomial entropy equals 1 unless it is conjugate to a rotation (in this last case, the polynomial entropy is zero).
Given a continuous dynamical system $f:X\to X$ on a compact metric space $X$ and an $m$-dimensional continuous potential $Φ:X\to \mathbb R^m$, the (generalized) rotation set ${\rm Rot}(Φ)$ is defined as the set of all $μ$-integrals of $Φ$, where $μ$ runs over all invariant probability measures. Analogous to the classical topological entropy, one can associate the localized entropy ${\mathcal H}(w)$ to each $w\in {\rm Rot}(Φ)$. In this paper, we study the computability of rotation sets and localized entropy functions by deriving conditions that imply their computability. We then apply our resul…
If a real-analytic flow on the multidimensional torus close enough to linear has a unique rotation vector which satisfies an arithmetical condition Y, then it is analytically conjugate to linear. We show this by proving that the orbit under renormalization of a constant Y vector field attracts all nearby orbits with the same rotation vector.
We prove existence of maximal entropy measures for an open set of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms on a compact Riemannian manifold. In this context the topological entropy coincides with the logarithm of the degree, and these maximizing measures are eigenmeasures of the transfer operator. When the map is topologically mixing, the maximizing measure is unique and positive on every open set.
We use entropy theory as a new tool for studying Lorenz-like classes of flows in any dimension. More precisely, we show that every Lorenz-like class is entropy expansive, and has positive entropy which varies continuously with vector fields. We deduce that every such class contains a transverse homoclinic orbit and, generically, is an attractor.
We consider a hyperbolic surface bundle over the circle with the smallest known volume among hyperbolic manifolds having 3 cusps, so called "the magic manifold". We compute the entropy function on the fiber face of the unit ball with respect to the Thurston norm, determine homology classes whose representatives are genus 0 fiber surfaces, and describe their monodromies by braids. Among such homology classes whose representatives have n punctures, we decide which one realizes the minimal entropy. It turns out that all the braids with smallest known entropy are derived from monodromies for such …
We study the maximal entropy per unit generator of push-point mapping classes on the punctured disk. Our work is motivated by fluid mixing by rods in a planar domain. If a single rod moves among N-fixed obstacles, the resulting fluid diffeomorphism is in the push-point mapping class associated with the loop in π_1(D^2 - {N points}) traversed by the single stirrer. The collection of motions in each of which the stirrer goes around a single obstacle generate the group of push-point mapping classes, and the entropy efficiency with respect to these generators gives a topological measure of the mix…
We consider rational surface automorphisms with positive entropy. A Fatou component is said to be a rotation domain if the automorphism induces a torus action on it. Here we construct a rational surface automorphism with positive entropy with the following property: it has a rotation domain which contains both a curve of fixed points and isolated fixed points. This Fatou component cannot be imbedded into complex euclidean space, so we introduce a global linear model space and show that it can be globally linearized in this model.
We introduce the notion of weak containment for stationary actions of a countable group and define a natural topology on the space of weak equivalence classes. We prove that Furstenberg entropy is an invariant of weak equivalence, and moreover that it descends to a continuous function on the space of weak equivalence classes.
We study doubly stochastic operators with zero entropy. We generalize three famous theorems: the Rokhlin's theorem on genericity of zero entropy, the Kushnirenko's theorem on equivalence of discrete spectrum and nullity and the Halmos-von Neumann's theorem on representation of maps with discrete spectrum as group rotations.
Topological entropy is not lower semi-continous: small perturbation of the dynamical system can lead to a collapse of entropy. In this note we show that for some special classes of dynamical systems (geodesic flows, Reeb flows, positive contactomorphisms) topological entropy at least is stable in the sense that there exists a nontrivial continuous lower bound, given that a certain homological invariant grows exponentially.
On a Riemannian 2-torus $(T^2,g)$ we study the geodesic flow in the case of low complexity described by zero topological entropy. We show that this assumption implies a nearly integrable behavior. In our previous paper \cite{GK} we already obtained that the asymptotic direction and therefore also the rotation number exists for all geodesics. In this paper we show that for all $r \in \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$ the universal cover $\Br^2$ is foliated by minimal geodesics of rotation number $r$. For irrational $r \in \mathbb{R}$ all geodesics are minimal, for rational $r \in \mathbb{R} \cup \{\i…
The evaluation of Alexander-Spanier cochains over formal simplices in a topological space leads to a notion of integration of Alexander-Spanier cohomology classes over Čech homology classes. The integral defines an explicit and non-degenerate pairing between the Alexander-Spanier cohomology and the Čech homology. Instead of working on the limits that define both groups, most of the discussion is carried out "at scale $\mathcal U$", for an open covering $\mathcal U$. As an application, we generalize a result of Manning to arbitrary compact spaces $X$: we prove that the topological entropy of $f…
In this short note we study the entropy for algebraic actions of certain amenable groups. The possible values for this entropy are studied. Various fundamental results about certain classes of amenable groups are reproved using elementary arguments and the entropy invariant. We provide a natural decomposition of the entropy into summands contributed by individual primes and a summand corresponding to infinity. These results extend previous work by Lind and Ward on p-adic entropy.
