We give general spectral and eigenvalue perturbation bounds for a selfadjoint operator perturbed in the sense of the pseudo-Friedrichs extension. We also give several generalisations of the aforementioned extension. The spectral bounds for finite eigenvalues are obtained by using analyticity and monotonicity properties (rather than variational principles) and they are general enough to include eigenvalues in gaps of the essential spectrum.
We prove that some perturbation of a J-selfadjoint second order differential operator admits factorization and use this new representation of the operator to prove compactness of its resolvent and to find its domain.
In this paper, we consider an unbounded selfadjoint operator $A$ and its selfadjoint perturbations in the same Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As S.Albeverio and P. Kurosov (2000), we call a selfadjoint operator $A_{1}$ the singular perturbation of $A$ if $A_{1}$ and {A} have different domains $\mathcal{D}(A),\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$ but $A=A_{1}$ on $\mathcal{D}(A)\cap\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$. Assuming that $A$ has absolutely continuous spectrum and the difference of resolvents $R_{z}(A_{1}) -R_{z}(A)$ of $A_{1}$ and $A$ for non-real $z$ is a trace class operator we find the explicit expression for the sc…
This is the third in a series of works devoted to spectral asymptotics for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2. We assume that the unperturbed operator has a periodic Hamilton flow, and study the remaining generic case; when the flow average of the perturbation has a saddle point
In this paper spectral theorems for not necessarily continuous normal and self-adjoint random operators on a complex separable Hilbert space are proved.
We study the instability of the spectrum for a class of non-selfadjoint anharmonic oscillators, estimating the behavior of the instability indices (i. e. the norm of spectral projections) associated with the large eigenvalues of these oscillators. We get asymptotic expansions for the instability indices, extending the results of Davies and Davies-Kuijlaars.
The purpose of this Note is to highlight the spectral instability of some non-selfadjoint differential operators, by studying the growth rate of the norms of the spectral projections $Π_n$ associated with their eigenvalues. More precisely, we are concerned with the complex Airy operator and even anharmonic oscillator. We get asymptotic expansions for the norm of the spectral projections associated with the large eigenvalues, extending the results of Davies and Davies-Kuijlaars.
Given two possibly unbounded selfadjoint operators A and G such that the resolvent sets of AG and GA are non-empty, it is shown that the operator AG has a spectral function on IR with singularities if there exists a non-zero polynomial p such that the symmetric operator Gp(AG) is non-negative. This result generalizes a well-known theorem for definitizable operators in Krein spaces.
This is the second in a series of works devoted to small non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint semiclassical pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2. As in our previous work, we consider the case when the classical flow of the unperturbed part is periodic. Under the assumption that the flow average of the leading perturbation vanishes identically, we show how to obtain a complete asymptotic description of the individual eigenvalues in certain domains in the complex plane, provided that the strength of the perturbation $ε$ is $\gg h^{1/2}$, or sometimes only $\gg h$, and enjoys the u…
We study the solvability complexity index (SCI) for unbounded selfadjoint operators on separable Hilbert spaces and perturbations thereof. In particular, we show that if the extended essential spectrum of a selfadjoint operator is convex, then the SCI for computing its spectrum is equal to 1. This result is then extended to relatively compact perturbations of such operators and applied to Schrödinger operators with compactly supported (complex valued) potentials to obtain SCI=1 in this case, as well.
We consider a non-selfadjoint $h$-differential model operator $P_h$ in the semiclassical limit ($h\rightarrow 0$) subject to random perturbations with a small coupling constant $δ$. Assume that $\exp(-\frac{1}{Ch}) < δ\ll h^κ$ for constants $C,κ>0$ suitably large. Let $Σ$ be the closure of the range of the principal symbol. We study the $2$-point intensity measure of the random point process of eigenvalues of the randomly perturbed operator $P_h^δ$ and prove an $h$-asymptotic formula for the average $2$-point density of eigenvalues. With this we show that two eigenvalues of $P_h^δ$ in the inte…
We analyze the singular spectrum of selfadjoint operators which arise from pasting a finite number of boundary relations with a standard interface condition. A model example for this situation is a Schroedinger operator on a star-shaped graph with continuity and Kirchhoff conditions at the interior vertex. We compute the multiplicity of the singular spectrum in terms of the spectral measures of the Weyl functions associated with the single (independently considered) boundary relations. This result is a generalization and refinement of Theorem of I.S. Kac.
We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint unbounded operators obtained from selfadjoint operators by a perturbation that is relatively-Schatten. These bounds are applied to obtain new results on the distribution of eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with complex potentials.
Let B=A+K where A is a bounded selfadjoint operator and K is an element of the von Neumann-Schatten ideal S_p with p>1. Let {λ_n} denote an enumeration of the discrete spectrum of B. We show that $\sum_n \dist(λ_n, σ(A))^p$ is bounded from above by a constant multiple of |K|_p^p. We also derive a unitary analog of this estimate and apply it to obtain new estimates on zero-sets of Cauchy transforms.
In this paper, we give a description of the spectrum of a class of non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint operators in dimension one and we show that it is given by Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions. To achieve this, we make use of previous work by Michael Hitrik, Anders Melin and Johannes Sj{ö}strand. We also give an application of our result in the case of PT-symmetric pseudo-differential operators.
This is the first in a series of works devoted to small non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2. In the present work we treat the case when the classical flow of the unperturbed part is periodic and the strength $ε$ of the perturbation is $\gg h$ (or sometimes only $\gg h^2$) and bounded from above by $h^δ$ for some $δ>0$. We get a complete asymptotic description of all eigenvalues in certain rectangles $[-1/C, 1/C]+ iε[F_0-1/C,F_0+1/C]$.
We study spectral properties of one-dimensional singular perturbations of an unbounded selfadjoint operator and give criteria for the possibility to remove the whole spectrum by a perturbation of this type. A counterpart of our results for the case of bounded operators provides a complete description of compact selfadjoint operators whose rank one perturbation is a Volterra operator.
We study Weyl-type perturbation theorems in the context of linear closed relations. We establish general results on perturbations for dissipative relations. In the particular case of selfadjoint relations, we study finite-rank perturbations and carry out a detailed analysis of the corresponding changes in the spectrum.
Let $ H_0=-\dd+V_0 $ be a multidimensional Schrödinger ope\-rator with a real-valued potential and infinite band spectrum, and $H=H_0+V$ be its non-selfadjoint perturbation defined with the help of Kato approach. We prove Lieb--Thirring type inequalities for the discrete spectrum of $H$ in the case when $V_0\in L^\infty(\br^d)$ and $V\in L^p(\br^d)$, $p>\max(d/2, 1)$.
We consider non-selfadjoint perturbations of a self-adjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operator in dimension 2. In the present work we treat the case when the classical flow of the unperturbed part is periodic and the strength $ε$ of the perturbation satisfies $h^{δ_0} <ε\le ε_0$ for some $δ_0\in ]0,1/2[$ and a sufficiently small $ε_0>0$. We get a complete asymptotic description of all eigenvalues in certain rectangles $[-1/C,1/C]+iε[F_0-1/C,F_0+1/C]$. In particular we are able to treat the case when $ε>0$ is small but independent of $h$.
We consider a non-selfadjoint $h$-differential model operator $P_h$ in the semiclassical limit ($h\rightarrow 0$) subject to small random perturbations. Furthermore, we let the coupling constant $δ$ be $\exp\{-\frac{1}{Ch}\}\leq δ\ll h^κ$ for constants $C,κ>0$ suitably large. Let $Σ$ be the closure of the range of the principal symbol. Previous results on the same model by Hager, Bordeaux-Montrieux and Sjöstrand show that if $δ\gg\exp\{-\frac{1}{Ch}\}$ there is, with a probability close to $1$, a Weyl law for the eigenvalues in the interior of the of the pseudospectrum up to a distance $\gg\le…
We consider nonsymmetric rank one singular perturbations of a selfadjoint operator, i.e., an expression of the form $\tilde A = A + α\left\langle\cdot, ω_1\right\rangleω_2$, $ω_1\not = ω_2$, $α\in{\mathbb C}$, in a general case $ω_1,ω_2\in{\mathcal H}_{-2}$. Using a constructive description of the perturbed operator $\tilde A$, we investigate some spectral and approximations properties of $\tilde A$. The wave operators corresponding to the couple $A$, $\tilde A$ and a series of examples are also presented.
We study the distribution of eigenvalues for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint semiclassical analytic pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. An asymptotic formula of Weyl type for the number of eigenvalues in a spectral band, bounded from above and from below by levels corresponding to Diophantine invariant Lagrangian tori, is established. The Weyl law is given in terms of the long time averages of the leading non-selfadjoint perturbation along the classical flow of the unperturbed part.
We study spectral properties of nonselfadjoint rank one perturbations of compact selfadjoint operators. The problems under consideration include completeness of eigenvectors, relations between completeness of the perturbed operator and its adjoint, and the spectral synthesis problem. We obtain new criteria for completeness and spectral synthesis in this class as well as a series of counterexamples which show that the spectral structure of rank one perturbations is, in general, unexpectedly rich and complicated. A parallel spectral theory is developed for one-dimensional singular perturbations …
We analyze the perturbations $T+B$ of a selfadjoint operator $T$ in a Hilbert space $H$ with discrete spectrum $\{t_k \}$, $T ϕ_k = t_k ϕ_k$, as an extension of our constructions in arXiv: 0912.2722 where $T$ was a harmonic oscillator operator. In particular, if $t_{k+1}-t_k \geq c k^{α- 1}, \quad α> 1/2$ and $\| B ϕ_k \| = o(k^{α- 1})$ then the system of root vectors of $T+B$, eventually eigenvectors of geometric multiplicity 1, is an unconditional basis in $H$.
We derive a description of the family of canonical selfadjoint extensions of the operator of multiplication in a de Branges space in terms of singular rank-one perturbations using distinguished elements from the set of functions associated with a de Branges space. The scale of rigged Hilbert spaces associated with this construction is also studied from the viewpoint of de Branges's theory.
The central problem we consider is the distribution of eigenvalues of closed linear operators which are not selfadjoint, with a focus on those operators which are obtained as perturbations of selfadjoint linear operators. Two methods are explained and elaborated. One approach uses complex analysis to study a holomorphic function whose zeros can be identified with the eigenvalues of the linear operator. The second method is an operator theoretic approach involving the numerical range. General results obtained by the two methods are derived and compared. Applications to non-selfadjoint Jacobi an…
We study spectral asymptotics for small non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part possesses several invariant Lagrangian tori enjoying a Diophantine property. We get complete asymptotic expansions for all eigenvalues in certain rectangles in the complex plane in two different cases: in the first case, we assume that the strength $ε$ of the perturbation is ${\cal O}(h^δ)$ for some $δ>0$ and is bounded from below by a fixed positive power of $h$. In the second case, $ε$ is assumed to be s…
We derive a spectral representation for the oblate spheroidal wave operator which is holomorphic in the aspherical parameter $Ω$ in a neighborhood of the real line. For real $Ω$, estimates are derived for all eigenvalue gaps uniformly in $Ω$. The proof of the gap estimates is based on detailed estimates for complex solutions of the Riccati equation. The spectral representation for complex $Ω$ is derived using the theory of slightly non-selfadjoint perturbations.
We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint bounded and unbounded operators. We use the perturbation determinant to reduce the problem to one of studying the zeroes of a holomorphic function.
We study semiclassical asymptotics for spectra of non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint analytic $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. Complete asymptotic expansions are established for all individual eigenvalues in suitable regions of the complex spectral plane, near the edges of the spectral band, coming from rational flow-invariant Lagrangian tori.
The spectrum of a selfadjoint second order elliptic differential operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is described in terms of the limiting behavior of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, which arise in a multi-dimensional Glazman decomposition and correspond to an interior and an exterior boundary value problem. This leads to PDE analogs of renowned facts in spectral theory of ODEs. The main results in this paper are first derived in the more abstract context of extension theory of symmetric operators and corresponding Weyl functions, and are applied to the PDE setting afterwards.
This is a sequel of a recent article by Borichev-Golinskii-Kupin, where the authors obtain Blaschke-type conditions for special classes of analytic functions in the unit disk which satisfy certain growth hypotheses. These results were applied to get Lieb-Thirring inequalities for complex compact perturbations of a selfadjoint operator with a simply connected resolvent set. The first result of the present paper is an appropriate local version of the Blaschke-type condition from Borichev-Golinskii-Kupin. We apply it to obtain a similar condition for an analytic function in a finitely connected d…
We study spectral asymptotics and resolvent bounds for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. Spectral contributions coming from rational invariant Lagrangian tori are analyzed. Estimating the tunnel effect between strongly irrational (Diophantine) and rational tori, we obtain an accurate description of the spectrum in a suitable window in the complex spectral plane, provided that the strength of the non-selfadjoint perturbation $\gg h$ (or sometimes $\gg h^…
We consider quite general $h$-pseudodifferential operators on $R^n$ with small random perturbations and show that in the limit of small $h$ the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Weyl law with a probabality that tends to 1. The first author has previously obtained a similar result in dimension 1. Our class of perturbations is different.
Let $H_0$ be a purely absolutely continuous selfadjoint operator acting on some separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and $V$ be a compact non-selfadjoint perturbation. We relate the regularity properties of $V$ to various spectral properties of the perturbed operator $H_0+V$. The structure of the discrete spectrum and the embedded eigenvalues are analysed jointly with the existence of limiting absorption principles in a unified framework. Our results are based on a suitable combination of complex scaling techniques, resonance theory and positive commutators methods. Various results sca…
We consider some compact non-selfadjoint perturbations of fibered one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators. We show that the perturbed operator exhibits finite discrete spectrum under suitable\- regularity conditions.
This article is devoted to the spectral analysis of the electro-magnetic Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean plane. In the semiclassical limit, we derive a pseudo-differential effective operator that allows us to describe the spectrum in various situations and appropriate regions of the complex plane. Not only results of the selfadjoint case are proved (or recovered) in the proposed unifying framework, but new results are established when the electric potential is complex-valued. In such situations, when the non-selfadjointness comes with its specific issues (lack of a "spectral theorem", re…
We give a characterisation of the spectral properties of linear differential operators with constant coefficients, acting on functions defined on a bounded interval, and determined by general linear boundary conditions. The boundary conditions may be such that the resulting operator is not selfadjoint. We associate the spectral properties of such an operator $S$ with the properties of the solution of a corresponding boundary value problem for the partial differential equation $\partial_t q \pm iSq=0$. Namely, we are able to establish an explicit correspondence between the properties of the fam…
We consider a general framework for investigating spectral pollution in the Galerkin method. We show how this phenomenon is characterised via the existence of particular Weyl sequences which are singular in a suitable sense. For a semi-bounded selfadjoint operator A we identify relative compactness conditions on a selfadjoint perturbation B ensuring that the limiting set of spectral pollution of A and B coincide. Our results show that, under perturbation, this limiting set behaves in a similar fashion as the essential spectrum.
The spectral and scattering properties of non-selfadjoint problems pose a mathematical challenge. Apart from exceptional cases, the well-developed methods used to examine the spectrum of selfadjoint problems are not applicable. One of the tools to attack non-selfadjoint problems are functional models. A drawback of many functional models is that their constructions require objects which may be difficult to describe explicitly, such as operator square roots, making it hard to apply the results to specific examples. We develop a functional model for the case when the non-selfadjointness arises b…
We study a semiclassical inverse spectral problem based on a spectral asymptotics result of arXiv:math/0502032, which applies to small non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2. The eigenvalues in a suitable complex window have an expansion in terms of a quantum Birkhoff normal form for the operator near several Lagrangian tori which are invariant under the classical dynamics and satisfy a Diophantine condition. In this work we prove that the normal form near a single Diophantine torus is uniquely determined by the associated eigenvalues. We a…
We study a closed unbounded self-adoint operator Q acting on a Hilbert space H in the framework of Metric Abstract Elementary Classes (MAECS). We build a suitable MAEC for (H,Q), prove it is aleph 0 stable up to perturbations and characterize non-splitting and show it has the same properties as non-forking in superstable first order theorues. Also, we characterize equality, orthogonality and domination of (Galois) types in that MAEC.
For a class of non-selfadjoint semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics, we study bounds for resolvents and estimates for low lying eigenvalues. Specifically, assuming that the quadratic approximations of the principal symbol of the operator along the double characteristics enjoy a partial ellipticity property along a suitable subspace of the phase space, namely their singular space, we establish semiclassical hypoelliptic a priori estimates with a loss of the full power of the semiclassical parameter, giving a localization for the low lying spectral values of the…
Let $T$ be the generator of a $C_0$-semigroup $e^{-Tt}$ which is of finite trace for all $t>0$ (a Gibbs semigroup). Let $A$ be another closed operator, $T$-bounded with $T$-bound equal to zero. In general $T+A$ might not be the generator of a Gibbs semigroup. In the first half of this paper we give sufficient conditions on $A$ so that $T+A$ is the generator of a Gibbs semigroup. We determine these conditions in terms of the convergence of the Dyson-Phillips expansion corresponding to the perturbed semigroup in suitable Schatten-von Neumann norms. In the second half of the paper we consider $T=…
We consider a class of one-dimensional nonselfadjoint semiclassical pseudo-differential operators, subject to small random perturbations, and study the statistical properties of their (discrete) spectra, in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0$. We compare two types of random perturbation: a random potential vs. a random matrix. Hager and Sjöstrand had shown that, with high probability, the local spectral density of the perturbed operator follows a semiclassical form of Weyl's law, depending on the value distribution of the principal symbol of our pseudodifferential operator. Beyond the spectral de…
We study the distribution of eigenvalues for selfadjoint $h$--pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, arising as perturbations of selfadjoint operators with a periodic classical flow. When the strength $\varepsilon$ of the perturbation is $\ll h$, the spectrum displays a cluster structure, and assuming that $\varepsilon \gg h^2$ (or sometimes $\gg h^{N_0}$, for $N_0 >1$ large), we obtain a complete asymptotic description of the individual eigenvalues inside subclusters, corresponding to the regular values of the leading symbol of the perturbation, averaged along the flow.
We construct quasimodes for some non-selfadjoint semiclassical operators at the boundary of the pseudo-spectrum using propagation of Hagedorn wave-packets. Assuming that the imaginary part of the principal symbol of the operator is non-negative and vanishes on certain points of the phase-space satisfying a subelliptic finite-type condition, we construct quasimodes that concentrate on these non-damped points. More generally, we apply this technique to construct quasimodes for non-selfadjoint semiclassical perturbations of the harmonic oscillator that concentrate on non-damped periodic orbits or…
Passive systems $τ={T,M,N,H}$ with $M$ and $N$ as an input and output space and $H$ as a state space are considered in the case that the main operator on the state space is normal. Basic properties are given and a general unitary similarity result involving some spectral theoretic conditions on the main operator is established. A passive system $τ$ with $M=N$ is said to be quasi-selfadjoint if $ran(T-T^*)\subset N$. The subclass $S^{qs}$ of the Schur class $S$ is the class formed by all transfer functions of quasi-selfadjoint passive systems. The subclass $S^{qs}$ is characterized and minimal …
Starting with an adjoint pair of operators, under suitable abstract versions of standard PDE hypotheses, we consider the Weyl M-function of extensions of the operators. The extensions are determined by abstract boundary conditions and we establish results on the relationship between the M-function as an analytic function of a spectral parameter and the spectrum of the extension. We also give an example where the M-function does not contain the whole spectral information of the resolvent, and show that the results can be applied to elliptic PDEs where the M-function corresponds to the Dirichlet…
We study resonances generated by rank one perturbations of selfadjoint operators with eigenvalues embedded in the continuous spectrum. Instability of these eigenvalues is analyzed and almost exponential decay for the associated resonant states is exhibited. We show how these results can be applied to Sturm-Liouville operators. Main tools are the Aronszajn-Donoghue theory for rank one perturbations, a reduction process of the resolvent based on Feshbach-Livsic formula, the Fermi golden rule and a careful analysis of the Fourier transform of quasi-Lorentzian functions. We relate these results to…
A spectral theory of linear operators on rigged Hilbert spaces (Gelfand triplets) is developed under the assumptions that a linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is a perturbation of a selfadjoint operator, and the spectral measure of the selfadjoint operator has an analytic continuation near the real axis in some sense. It is shown that there exists a dense subspace $X$ of $\mathcal{H}$ such that the resolvent $(λ-T)^{-1}ϕ$ of the operator $T$ has an analytic continuation from the lower half plane to the upper half plane as an $X'$-valued holomorphic function for any $ϕ\in X$, …
We prove new enclosures for the spectrum of non-selfadjoint operator matrices associated with second order linear differential equations $\ddot{z}(t) + D \dot{z} (t) + A_0 z(t) = 0$ in a Hilbert space. Our main tool is the quadratic numerical range for which we establish the spectral inclusion property under weak assumptions on the operators involved; in particular, the damping operator only needs to be accretive and may have the same strength as $A_0$. By means of the quadratic numerical range, we establish tight spectral estimates in terms of the unbounded operator coefficients $A_0$ and $D$…
We study the non-selfadjoint Dirac system on the line having an non-integrable regular singularity in an interior point with additional matching conditions at the singular point. Special fundamental systems of solutions are constructed with prescribed analytic and asymptotic properties. Behavior of the corresponding Stockes multipliers is established. These fundamental systems of solutions will be used for studying direct and inverse problems of spectral analysis.
