We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint unbounded operators obtained from selfadjoint operators by a perturbation that is relatively-Schatten. These bounds are applied to obtain new results on the distribution of eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with complex potentials.
Let B=A+K where A is a bounded selfadjoint operator and K is an element of the von Neumann-Schatten ideal S_p with p>1. Let {λ_n} denote an enumeration of the discrete spectrum of B. We show that $\sum_n \dist(λ_n, σ(A))^p$ is bounded from above by a constant multiple of |K|_p^p. We also derive a unitary analog of this estimate and apply it to obtain new estimates on zero-sets of Cauchy transforms.
We consider some compact non-selfadjoint perturbations of fibered one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators. We show that the perturbed operator exhibits finite discrete spectrum under suitable\- regularity conditions.
We use a classical result of Hildebrandt to establish simple conditions for the absence of eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint discrete and continuous Schrödinger operators on the boundary of their numerical range.
We study the solvability complexity index (SCI) for unbounded selfadjoint operators on separable Hilbert spaces and perturbations thereof. In particular, we show that if the extended essential spectrum of a selfadjoint operator is convex, then the SCI for computing its spectrum is equal to 1. This result is then extended to relatively compact perturbations of such operators and applied to Schrödinger operators with compactly supported (complex valued) potentials to obtain SCI=1 in this case, as well.
We analyze the singular spectrum of selfadjoint operators which arise from pasting a finite number of boundary relations with a standard interface condition. A model example for this situation is a Schroedinger operator on a star-shaped graph with continuity and Kirchhoff conditions at the interior vertex. We compute the multiplicity of the singular spectrum in terms of the spectral measures of the Weyl functions associated with the single (independently considered) boundary relations. This result is a generalization and refinement of Theorem of I.S. Kac.
We study the instability of the spectrum for a class of non-selfadjoint anharmonic oscillators, estimating the behavior of the instability indices (i. e. the norm of spectral projections) associated with the large eigenvalues of these oscillators. We get asymptotic expansions for the instability indices, extending the results of Davies and Davies-Kuijlaars.
Let $H_0$ be a purely absolutely continuous selfadjoint operator acting on some separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and $V$ be a compact non-selfadjoint perturbation. We relate the regularity properties of $V$ to various spectral properties of the perturbed operator $H_0+V$. The structure of the discrete spectrum and the embedded eigenvalues are analysed jointly with the existence of limiting absorption principles in a unified framework. Our results are based on a suitable combination of complex scaling techniques, resonance theory and positive commutators methods. Various results sca…
Continuous movement of discrete spectrum of the Schrödinger operator $H(z)=-\frac{d^2} {dx^2}+V_0+z V_1$, with $\int_0^\infty {x |V_j(x)| dx} < \infty$, on the half-line is studied as $z$ moves along a continuous path in the complex plane. The analysis provides information regarding the members of the discrete spectrum of the non-selfadjoint operator that are evolved from the discrete spectrum of the corresponding selfadjoint operator.
We give general spectral and eigenvalue perturbation bounds for a selfadjoint operator perturbed in the sense of the pseudo-Friedrichs extension. We also give several generalisations of the aforementioned extension. The spectral bounds for finite eigenvalues are obtained by using analyticity and monotonicity properties (rather than variational principles) and they are general enough to include eigenvalues in gaps of the essential spectrum.
A discrete analog of a skew selfadjoint canonical (Zakharov-Shabat or AKNS) system with a pseudo-exponential potential is introduced. For the corresponding Weyl function the direct and inverse problem are solved explicitly in terms of three parameter matrices. As an application explicit solutions are obtained for the discrete integrable nonlinear equation corresponding to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet model. State space techniques from mathematical system theory play an important role in the proofs.
We analyze the perturbations $T+B$ of a selfadjoint operator $T$ in a Hilbert space $H$ with discrete spectrum $\{t_k \}$, $T ϕ_k = t_k ϕ_k$, as an extension of our constructions in arXiv: 0912.2722 where $T$ was a harmonic oscillator operator. In particular, if $t_{k+1}-t_k \geq c k^{α- 1}, \quad α> 1/2$ and $\| B ϕ_k \| = o(k^{α- 1})$ then the system of root vectors of $T+B$, eventually eigenvectors of geometric multiplicity 1, is an unconditional basis in $H$.
We study spectral properties of one-dimensional singular perturbations of an unbounded selfadjoint operator and give criteria for the possibility to remove the whole spectrum by a perturbation of this type. A counterpart of our results for the case of bounded operators provides a complete description of compact selfadjoint operators whose rank one perturbation is a Volterra operator.
We study the spectrum of a quantum star graph with a non-selfadjoint Robin condition at the central vertex. We first prove that, in the high frequency limit, the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian is close to the usual spectrum corresponding to the Kirchhoff condition. Then, we describe more precisely the asymptotics of the difference in terms of the Barra-Gaspard measure of the graph. This measure depends on the arithmetic properties of the lengths of the edges. As a by-product, this analysis provides a Weyl Law for non-selfadjoint quantum star graphs and it gives the asymptotic behaviour of the…
In this paper we develop tools to study families of non-selfadjoint operators $L(φ), φ\in P$, characterized by the property that the spectrum of $L(φ)$ is (partially) simple. As a case study we consider the Zakharov-Shabat operators $L(φ)$ appearing in the Lax pair of the focusing NLS on the circle. The main result says that the set of potentials $φ$ of Sobolev class $H^N, N \geq 0$, so that all small eigenvalues of $L(φ)$ are simple, is path connected and dense.
In this paper, we consider an unbounded selfadjoint operator $A$ and its selfadjoint perturbations in the same Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As S.Albeverio and P. Kurosov (2000), we call a selfadjoint operator $A_{1}$ the singular perturbation of $A$ if $A_{1}$ and {A} have different domains $\mathcal{D}(A),\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$ but $A=A_{1}$ on $\mathcal{D}(A)\cap\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$. Assuming that $A$ has absolutely continuous spectrum and the difference of resolvents $R_{z}(A_{1}) -R_{z}(A)$ of $A_{1}$ and $A$ for non-real $z$ is a trace class operator we find the explicit expression for the sc…
We investigate minimal operator corresponding to operator differential expression with exit from space, study its selfadjoint extensions, also for one particular selfadjoint extension corresponding to boundary value problem with some rational function of eigenparameter in boundary condition establish asymptotics of spectrum and derive trace formula
Let $ H_0=-\dd+V_0 $ be a multidimensional Schrödinger ope\-rator with a real-valued potential and infinite band spectrum, and $H=H_0+V$ be its non-selfadjoint perturbation defined with the help of Kato approach. We prove Lieb--Thirring type inequalities for the discrete spectrum of $H$ in the case when $V_0\in L^\infty(\br^d)$ and $V\in L^p(\br^d)$, $p>\max(d/2, 1)$.
In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\m…
We show that non-round boundary points of the numerical range of an unbounded operator (i.e. points where the boundary has infinite curvature) are contained in the spectrum of the operator. Moreover, we show that non-round boundary points, which are not corner points, lie in the essential spectrum. This generalizes results of Hübner, Farid, Spitkovsky and Salinas and Velasco for the case of bounded operators. We apply our results to non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators, showing that in this case the boundary of the numerical range can be non-round only at points where it hits the essential sp…
We consider equivariant continuous families of discrete one-dimensional operators over arbitrary dynamical systems. We introduce the concept of a pseudo-ergodic element of a dynamical system. We then show that all operators associated to pseudo-ergodic elements have the same spectrum and that this spectrum agrees with their essential spectrum. As a consequence we obtain that the spectrum is constant and agrees with the essential spectrum for all elements in the dynamical system if minimality holds.
In this paper, we give a description of the spectrum of a class of non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint operators in dimension one and we show that it is given by Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions. To achieve this, we make use of previous work by Michael Hitrik, Anders Melin and Johannes Sj{ö}strand. We also give an application of our result in the case of PT-symmetric pseudo-differential operators.
For a class of non-selfadjoint $h$--pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics, we give a precise description of the spectrum and establish accurate semiclassical resolvent estimates in a neighborhood of the origin. Specifically, assuming that the quadratic approximations of the principal symbol of the operator along the double characteristics enjoy a partial ellipticity property along a suitable subspace of the phase space, namely their singular space, we give a precise description of the spectrum of the operator in an ${\cal O}(h)$--neighborhood of the origin. Moreover, when al…
In this study, we define discrete fractional Sturm-Liouville (DFSL) operators within Riemann-Liouville and Grünwald-Letnikov fractional operators with both delta and nabla operators. We show selfadjointness of the DFSL operator for the first time and prove some spectral properties, like orthogonality of distinct eigenfunctions, reality of eigenvalues, paralelly in integer and fractional order differential operator counterparts.
In this paper we study direct and inverse problems for discrete and continuous time skew-selfadjoint Dirac systems with rectangular (possibly non-square) pseudo-exponential potentials. For such a system the Weyl function is a strictly proper rational rectangular matrix function and any strictly proper rational matrix function appears in this way. In fact, extending earlier results, given a strictly proper rational matrix function we present an explicit procedure to recover the corresponding potential using techniques from mathematical system and control theory. We also introduce and study a no…
We study spectral asymptotics and resolvent bounds for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. Spectral contributions coming from rational invariant Lagrangian tori are analyzed. Estimating the tunnel effect between strongly irrational (Diophantine) and rational tori, we obtain an accurate description of the spectrum in a suitable window in the complex spectral plane, provided that the strength of the non-selfadjoint perturbation $\gg h$ (or sometimes $\gg h^…
This article is devoted to the spectral analysis of the electro-magnetic Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean plane. In the semiclassical limit, we derive a pseudo-differential effective operator that allows us to describe the spectrum in various situations and appropriate regions of the complex plane. Not only results of the selfadjoint case are proved (or recovered) in the proposed unifying framework, but new results are established when the electric potential is complex-valued. In such situations, when the non-selfadjointness comes with its specific issues (lack of a "spectral theorem", re…
It is well known that, given an equivariant and continuous (in a suitable sense) family of selfadjoint operators in a Hilbert space over a minimal dynamical system, the spectrum of all operators from that family coincides. As shown recently similar results also hold for suitable families of non-selfadjoint operators in $\ell^p (\ZM)$. Here, we generalize this to a large class of bounded linear operator families on Banach-space valued $\ell^p$-spaces over countable discrete groups. We also provide equality of the pseudospectra for operators in such a family. A main tool for our analysis are tec…
The spectrum of a selfadjoint second order elliptic differential operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is described in terms of the limiting behavior of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, which arise in a multi-dimensional Glazman decomposition and correspond to an interior and an exterior boundary value problem. This leads to PDE analogs of renowned facts in spectral theory of ODEs. The main results in this paper are first derived in the more abstract context of extension theory of symmetric operators and corresponding Weyl functions, and are applied to the PDE setting afterwards.
We study the variation of the discrete spectrum of a bounded non-negative operator in a Krein space under a non-negative Schatten class perturbation of order $p$. It turns out that there exist so-called extended enumerations of discrete eigenvalues of the unperturbed and the perturbed operator, respectively, whose difference is an $\ell^p$-sequence. This result is a Krein space version of a theorem by T.Kato for bounded selfadjoint operators in Hilbert spaces.
In [Camano, Lackner, Monk, SIAM J. Math. Anal., Vol. 49, No. 6, pp. 4376-4401 (2017)] it was suggested to use Stekloff eigenvalues for Maxwell equations as target signature for nondestructive testing via inverse scattering. The authors recognized that in general the eigenvalues due not correspond to the spectrum of a compact operator and hence proposed a modified eigenvalue problem with the desired properties. The Fredholmness and the approximation of both problems were analyzed in [Halla, arXiv:1909.00689 (2019)]. The present work considers the original eigenvalue problem in the selfadjoint c…
We study the spectrum of a system of second order differential operator perturbed by a non-selfadjoint matrix valued potential. We prove that eigenvalues of the perturbed operator are located near the edges of the spectrum of the unperturbed operator.
We construct quasimodes for some non-selfadjoint semiclassical operators at the boundary of the pseudo-spectrum using propagation of Hagedorn wave-packets. Assuming that the imaginary part of the principal symbol of the operator is non-negative and vanishes on certain points of the phase-space satisfying a subelliptic finite-type condition, we construct quasimodes that concentrate on these non-damped points. More generally, we apply this technique to construct quasimodes for non-selfadjoint semiclassical perturbations of the harmonic oscillator that concentrate on non-damped periodic orbits or…
Procedures to recover explicitly discrete and continuous skew-selfadjoint Dirac systems on semi-axis from rational Weyl matrix functions are considered. Their stability is shown. Some new facts on asymptotics of pseudo-exponential potentials (i.e., of explicit solutions of inverse problems) are proved as well. GBDT version of Backlund-Darboux transformation, methods from system theory and results on algebraic Riccati equations are used for this purpose.
The spectral and scattering properties of non-selfadjoint problems pose a mathematical challenge. Apart from exceptional cases, the well-developed methods used to examine the spectrum of selfadjoint problems are not applicable. One of the tools to attack non-selfadjoint problems are functional models. A drawback of many functional models is that their constructions require objects which may be difficult to describe explicitly, such as operator square roots, making it hard to apply the results to specific examples. We develop a functional model for the case when the non-selfadjointness arises b…
We study the 1-D Schrödinger operators in Hilbert space $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ with real-valued Radon measure $q'(x)$, $q\in \mathrm{BV}_{loc}(\mathbb{R})$ as potentials. New sufficient conditions for minimal operators to be bounded below and selfadjoint are found. For such operators a criterion for the discreteness of the spectrum is proved, which generalizes Molchanov's, Brinck's, and the Albeverio-Kostenko-Malamud criteria. The quadratic forms corresponding to the investigated operators are described.
We establish spectral convergence results of approximations of unbounded non-selfadjoint linear operators with compact resolvents by operators that converge in generalized strong resolvent sense. The aim is to establish general assumptions that ensure spectral exactness, i.e. that every true eigenvalue is approximated and no spurious eigenvalues occur. A main ingredient is the discrete compactness of the sequence of resolvents of the approximating operators. We establish sufficient conditions and perturbation results for strong convergence and for discrete compactness of the resolvents.
Starting with an adjoint pair of operators, under suitable abstract versions of standard PDE hypotheses, we consider the Weyl M-function of extensions of the operators. The extensions are determined by abstract boundary conditions and we establish results on the relationship between the M-function as an analytic function of a spectral parameter and the spectrum of the extension. We also give an example where the M-function does not contain the whole spectral information of the resolvent, and show that the results can be applied to elliptic PDEs where the M-function corresponds to the Dirichlet…
We prove new enclosures for the spectrum of non-selfadjoint operator matrices associated with second order linear differential equations $\ddot{z}(t) + D \dot{z} (t) + A_0 z(t) = 0$ in a Hilbert space. Our main tool is the quadratic numerical range for which we establish the spectral inclusion property under weak assumptions on the operators involved; in particular, the damping operator only needs to be accretive and may have the same strength as $A_0$. By means of the quadratic numerical range, we establish tight spectral estimates in terms of the unbounded operator coefficients $A_0$ and $D$…
This is a sequel of a recent article by Borichev-Golinskii-Kupin, where the authors obtain Blaschke-type conditions for special classes of analytic functions in the unit disk which satisfy certain growth hypotheses. These results were applied to get Lieb-Thirring inequalities for complex compact perturbations of a selfadjoint operator with a simply connected resolvent set. The first result of the present paper is an appropriate local version of the Blaschke-type condition from Borichev-Golinskii-Kupin. We apply it to obtain a similar condition for an analytic function in a finitely connected d…
The spectral properties of a singular left-definite Sturm-Liouville operator $JA$ are investigated and described via the properties of the corresponding right-definite selfadjoint counterpart $A$ which is obtained by substituting the indefinite weight function by its absolute value. The spectrum of the $J$-selfadjoint operator $JA$ is real and it follows that an interval $(a,b)\subset\mathbb R^+$ is a gap in the essential spectrum of $A$ if and only if both intervals $(-b,-a)$ and $(a,b)$ are gaps in the essential spectrum of the $J$-selfadjoint operator $JA$. As one of the main results it is …
In this paper, a quadratic pencil of Schrödinger type difference operator $L_λ$ is taken under investigation to give a general perspective on the spectral analysis of non-selfadjoint difference equations of second order. Introducing Jost-type solutions, structural and quantitative properties of spectrum of the operator $L_λ$ are analyzed and hence, a discrete analog of the theory in Degasperis, (\emph{J.Math.Phys}. 11: 551--567, 1970) and Bairamov et. al, (\emph{Quaest. Math.} 26: 15--30, 2003) is developed. In addition, several analogies are established between difference and $q$-difference c…
We study the distribution of eigenvalues for selfadjoint $h$--pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, arising as perturbations of selfadjoint operators with a periodic classical flow. When the strength $\varepsilon$ of the perturbation is $\ll h$, the spectrum displays a cluster structure, and assuming that $\varepsilon \gg h^2$ (or sometimes $\gg h^{N_0}$, for $N_0 >1$ large), we obtain a complete asymptotic description of the individual eigenvalues inside subclusters, corresponding to the regular values of the leading symbol of the perturbation, averaged along the flow.
We consider a class of one-dimensional nonselfadjoint semiclassical pseudo-differential operators, subject to small random perturbations, and study the statistical properties of their (discrete) spectra, in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0$. We compare two types of random perturbation: a random potential vs. a random matrix. Hager and Sjöstrand had shown that, with high probability, the local spectral density of the perturbed operator follows a semiclassical form of Weyl's law, depending on the value distribution of the principal symbol of our pseudodifferential operator. Beyond the spectral de…
In this note it is proved that the complete spectral data of selfadjoint Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains can be described with an associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. In particular, a characterization of the isolated and embedded eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenspaces, as well as the continuous and absolutely continuous spectrum in terms of the limiting behaviour of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is obtained. Furthermore, a sufficient criterion for the absence of singular continuous spectrum is provided. The results are natural multidimensional analogues of classical facts from si…
The indefinite Sturm-Liouville operator $A = (\sgn x)(-d^2/dx^2+q(x))$ is studied. It is proved that similarity of $A$ to a selfadjoint operator is equivalent to integral estimates of Cauchy integrals. Also similarity conditions in terms of Weyl functions are given. For operators with a finite-zone potential, the components $\Aess$ and $\Adisc$ of $A$ corresponding to essential and discrete spectrums, respectively, are considered. A criterion of similarity of $\Aess$ to a selfadjoint operator is given in terms of Weyl functions for the Sturm-Liouville operator $-d^2/dx^2+q(x)$ with a finite-zo…
We discuss a functional model for multi--diagonal selfadjoint operators with almost periodic coefficients that generalizes the well known model for finite band Jacobi matrices. It give us an opportunity to construct examples of almost periodic operators with different spectral properties. Main result deals with an exact condition for the uniqueness of the model of the given type.
The Champagne bottle is one of the simplest and typical examples of Liouville integrable systems that exhibit a non-trivial classical monodromy. This geometrical invariant perturbs globally the existence of action-angle coordinates on the phrase space. However, our work shows a new way to detect the geometric modification on the phrase space by looking at the spectrum of a single operator, that is small non-selfadjoint perturbation of a selfadjoint semiclassical operator accepting the Hamiltonian of the Champagne bottle as its principal symbol.
We study the momentum operator defined on the disjoint union of two intervals. Even in one dimension, the question of two non-empty open and non-overlapping intervals has not been worked out in a way that extends the cases of a single interval and gives a list of the selfadjoint extensions. Starting with zero boundary conditions at the four endpoints, we characterize the selfadjoint extensions and undertake a systematic and complete study of the spectral theory of the selfadjoint extensions. In an application of our extension theory to harmonic analysis, we offer a new family of spectral pairs…
We study some classes of symmetric operators for the discrete series representations of the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}), which may serve as Hamiltonians of various physical systems. The problem of diagonalization of these operators (eigenfunctions, spectra, overlap coefficients, etc.) is solved by expressing their overlap coefficients in terms of the known families of q-orthogonal polynomials. We consider both bounded and unbounded operators. In the latter case they are not selfadjoint and have deficiency indices (1,1), which means that they have infinitely many selfadjoint extensions. We fi…
The spectral properties of a class of non-selfadjoint second order elliptic operators with indefinite weight functions on unbounded domains $Ω$ are investigated. It is shown that under an abstract regularity assumption the nonreal spectrum of the associated elliptic operator in $L^2(Ω)$ is bounded. In the special case that $Ω=R^n $decomposes into subdomains $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$ with smooth compact boundaries and the weight function is positive on $Ω_+$ and negative on $Ω_-$, it turns out that the nonreal spectrum consists only of normal eigenvalues which can be characterized with a Dirichlet-to-Neu…
We study Schrödinger operators $H=-Δ+V$ in $L^2(Ω)$ where $Ω$ is $\mathbb R^d$ or the half-space $\mathbb R_+^d$, subject to (real) Robin boundary conditions in the latter case. For $p>d$ we construct a non-real potential $V\in L^p(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$ that decays at infinity so that $H$ has infinitely many non-real eigenvalues accumulating at every point of the essential spectrum $σ_{\rm ess}(H)=[0,\infty)$. This demonstrates that the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for selfadjoint Schrödinger operators are no longer true in the non-selfadjoint case.
We study some accurate semiclassical resolvent estimates for operators that are neither selfadjoint nor elliptic, and applications to the Cauchy problem. In particular we get a precise description of the spectrum near the imaginary axis and precise resolvent estimates inside the pseudo-spectrum. We apply our results to the Kramers-Fokker-Planck operator.
We develop the complex scaling method for the Dirichlet Laplacian in a domain with asymptotically cylindrical end. We define resonances as discrete eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators, obtained as deformations of the selfadjoint Dirichlet Laplacian $Δ$ by means of the complex scaling. The resonances are identified with the poles of the resolvent matrix elements $((Δ-μ)^{-1}F, G)$ meromorphic continuation in $μ$ across the essential spectrum of $Δ$, where $F$ and $G$ are elements of an explicitly given set of partial analytic vectors. It turns out that the Dirichlet Laplacian has no singul…
