The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC comprise the e+ booster, the e- drive linac, the e+ booster, and the two prelinacs. These four systems together transport the two types of beams from the 80 MeV point at the end of their respective bunchers up to the storage rings, and then from the storage rings to the 10 GeV point at the beginning of the bunch compressors. Nominally, the e+ booster structure will be L-band and the others S-band. In transport through these linacs it is important that the emittances and particle losses stay within specified tolerances. In particular, the effects of the dipole wakefield-especially the long-range dipole wakefield-need to be carefully considered. We present designs of the injector linac structures that employ simple mode detuning, without damping, and that allow us to satisfy our tolerance requirements, for both the nominal (2.8 ns) and alternate (1.4 ns) bunch spacing options.
We explore the NLC linac optics compatible with a low energy scenario where initially only part of the full linac is installed. Optics modification suitable for a low energy beam running and upgrade to the nominal energy is discussed. Linac parameters and beam tolerances in the modified lattice are compared to the nominal design.
The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC project include the prelinac, the e+ drive linac, the $e- booster, and the $e+ booster. The first three will be S-band machines, the last one, an L-band machine. We have demonstrated that by using detuning alone in the accelerator structure design of these linacs we will have acceptable tolerances for emittance growth due to both injection jitter and structure misalignments, for both the nominal (2.8ns) and alternate (1.4ns) bunch spacings.
The vibration of components of the NLC linac, such as accelerating structures and girders, is being studied both experimentally and analytically. Various effects are being considered including structural resonances and vibration caused by cooling water in the accelerating structure. This paper reports the status of ongoing work.
Vertical vibration of linac components (accelerating structures, girders and quadrupoles) in the NLC has been studied experimentally and analytically. Effects such as structural resonances and vibration caused by cooling water both in accelerating structures and quadrupoles have been considered. Experimental data has been compared with analytical predictions and simulations using ANSYS. A design, incorporating the proper decoupling of structure vibrations from the linac quadrupoles, is being pursued.

The proposed Next Linear Collider (NLC) contains linac systems operating at L,S,C, and X band. This paper describes a wideband modular low-level RF (LLRF) system applicable for all NLC pulsed RF systems. High speed digital IF techniques are used for both arbitrary klystron drive modulation and accurate RF vector detection. Measurement of relative beam to RF phase, beam loading compensation, and structure dipole modes for automated alignment are all handled by the system. Modern signal processing techniques are also described.
An alternative being considered for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) is not to tunnel in a straight line but to bend the Main Linac into an arc so as to follow an equipotential. We begin here an examination of the effects that this would have on vertical dispersion, with its attendant consequences on synchrotron radiation and emittance growth by looking at two scenarios: a gentle continuous bending of the beam to follow an equipotential surface, and an introduction of sharp bends at a few sites in the linac so as to reduce the maximum sagitta produced.
The China ADS (C-ADS) project is proposed to build a 1000 MW Accelerator Driven sub-critical System around 2032. The accelerator will work in CW mode with 10 mA in beam current and 1.5 GeV in final beam energy. The linac is composed of two major sections: the injector section and the main linac section. There are two different schemes for the injector section. The Injector-I scheme is based on a 325-MHz RFQ and superconducting spoke cavities of same RF frequency and the Injector-II scheme is based on a 162.5-MHz RFQ and superconducting HWR cavities of same frequency. The main linac design will…
The vibration stability requirements for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) are far more stringent than for the previous generation of Colliders. To meet these goals, it is imperative that the effects of vibration on NLC Linac components from near-field sources (e.g. compressors, high vacuum equipment, klystrons, modulators, pumps, fans, etc) be well understood. The civil construction method, whether cut-and-cover or parallel bored tunnels, can determine the proximity and possible isolation of noise sources. This paper presents a brief summary and analysis of recently completed and planned studies…
Extensive beam-based feedback systems are planned as an integral part of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) control system. Wakefield effects are a significant influence on the feedback design, imposing both architectural and algorithmic constraints. Studies are in progress to assure the optimal selection of devices and to refine and confirm the algorithms for the system design. We show the results of initial simulations, along with evaluations of system response for various conditions of ground motion and other operational disturbances.
In order to mitigate the effects of electrical breakdown (which have been found to occur in SLAC X-band traveling wave structures) standing wave structures are being considered for the NLC linac. At SLAC, structures consisting of 15 cells operating in the p accelerating mode are being tested for their electrical breakdown characteristics. In this paper the tuning requirement on the cavities is elucidated by utilizing a circuit model of the structure. The sensitivity of the field to both random and systematic errors is also discussed.
This paper reports on the feasibility study of a proton Super-Conducting Linac (SCL) as a new injector to the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Linac beam energy is in the range of 1.5 to 2.4 GeV. The Beam intensity is adjusted to provide an average beam power of 4 MW at the top energy of 24 GeV. The repetition rate of the SCL-AGS facility is 5 beam pulses per second.
The main linacs of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) will contain several thousand X-band RDDS (Rounded Damped Detuned Structures). The transverse wakefield in the structures is reduced by detuning the modal frequencies such that they destructively interfere and by four damping manifolds per structure which provide weak damping. Errors in the fabrication of the individual cells and in the alignment of the cells will reduce the cancellation of the modes. Here, we calculate the tolerances on random errors in the synchronous frequencies of the cells and the cell-to-cell alignment.
As a part of the ongoing XIIth plan project titled "R&D activities for high energy proton linac based spallation neutron source", the work on physics design of various subsystems of the injector linac and accumulator ring has been taken up at RRCAT, Indore. For the 1 GeV H- injector linac, physics design studies of individual systems have been completed, and the end to end beam dynamics simulation studies have been performed to ensure that the stringent beam dynamics criteria are satisfied for the optimized lattice. Physics design studies to optimize the linear lattice of the accumulator ring …
In the NLC (Next Linear Collider) small misalignments in each of the individual accelerator structures (or the accelerator cells) will give rise to wakefields which kick the beam from its electrical axis. This wakefield can cause BBU (Beam Break Up) or at the very least it will dilute the emittance of the beam. Several Gaussian detuned structures have been designed and tested [1] at SLAC and in this paper we explore new distributions with possibly better damping properties. The progress of the beam through approximately 5,000 structures is monitored in phase space and results on this are prese…
The superconducting (SC) High Intensity and Energy (HIE) ISOLDE linac will replace most of the existing accelerating infrastructure of the Radioactive ion beam EXperiment (REX) at CERN, however, the 101.28 MHz RFQ and 5 MV IH cavity will remain in the role of injector for the upgrade, boosting the beam up to an energy of 1.2 MeV/u. We present the results of a beam dynamics investigation of the injector focused most critically on matching the longitudinal beam parameters from the RFQ to the SC machine, which is complicated largely by the IH cavity employing a Combined Zero Degree (KONUS) beam d…
Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction meth…
As an accelerator control system survives over several years, it is often the case that new subsystems are introduced into the original control system. The control system for the KEK electron/positron injector-linac has been using Unix workstations and VME computers since 1993. During the eight-year operation, we extended the system by introducing a) Windows PCs, b) PLC controllers with a network interface, and c) web servers based on modern information technology. Although such new subsystems are essential to improve control functionalities, they often cause communication problems with the or…
The option to install two injectors is foreseen at the European XFEL Facility. The injectors will be located on top of each other in the same building, both with the offset of 2.75 m with respect to the main linac axis. The translation system (dogleg) from the injector axis to the main linac axis has to fulfill very tight requirements of the chromatic properties, because the energy chirp required for the downstream bunch length compression in magnetic chicanes will be created upstream in the injector linac. In this paper we present such an large energy acceptance dogleg and discuss the optical…
A dedicated clinical synchrotron facility for cancer therapy using energetic proton and ion beams (C, He and O) has been designed at GSI for the Radiologische Universitaetsklinik at Heidelberg, Germany. The design of the injector linac is presented. Suitable ion sources are discussed and results of ion source test measurements are reported. The LEBT allows for switching between two ion sources. A short RFQ accelerates the ions from 8 keV/u to 400 keV/u. It is followed by a very compact beam matching section and a 3.8 m long IH-type drift tube linac for the acceleration to 7 MeV/u. Both rf stru…
A room temperature heavy ion linac has been proposed as a new injector of CSRm (the main Cooler Storage Ring) at HIRFL (Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou), which is expected to improve the performance of HIRFL. The linac injector can supply heavy ion with maximum mass to charge ratio of 7 and injection kinetic energy of 7.272MeV/u for CSRm, and the pulsed beam intensity is 3emA with the duty factor of 3%. Compared with the present cyclotron injector SFC (Sector Focusing Cyclotron), the beam current from linac can be improved by 10-100 times. As the pre-accelerator of the linac, the 108.48…
Earlier RDDS (Rounded Damped Detuned Structures) [1,2], designed, fabricated and tested at SLAC, in collaboration with KEK, have been shown to damp wakefields successfully. However, electrical breakdown has been found to occur in these structures and this makes them inoperable at the desired gradient. Recent results [3] indicate that lowering the group velocity of the accelerating mode reduces electrical breakdown events. In order to preserve the filling time of each structure a high synchronous phase advance (150 degrees as opposed to 120 used in previous NLC designs) has been chosen. Here, d…
The shape of an RF pulse is distorted upon propagating through an X-band accelerator structure due to dispersive effects. This distortion together with beam loading introduce energy spread between 192 bunches. In order to minimize this energy spread we modify the input RF pulse shape. The pulse propagation, energy gain, and beam loading are modelled with a mode-matching computer code and a circuit model. A 2D model and a circuit model of a complete 60 cm structure, consisting of 55 cells and input and output couplers is analyzed. This structure operates with a 5pi/6 phase advance per cell. Dis…
The proposed Next Linear Collider contains a large number of linac RF systems with new requirements for wideband klystron modulation and accurate RF vector detection. The system will be capable of automatically phasing each klystron and compensating for beam loading effects. Accelerator structure alignment is determined by detection of the beam induced dipole modes with a receiver similar to that used for measuring the accelerator RF and is incorporated into the RF system topology. This paper describes the proposed system design, signal processing techniques and includes preliminary test resul…
As the pre-injector of the LHC injector chain, the proton linac at CERN is required to provide a high-intensity (180mA) beam to the Proton Synchrotron Booster. The results of measurements at this intensity will be presented. Furthermore, the linac is now equipped with bunch shape monitors from INR, Moscow, which have allowed the comparison of the Alvarez tank RF settings with simulations.
The first phase of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN consists of a superconducting (SC) linac upgrade in order to increase the energy of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams from 2.8 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u (for A/q = 4.5). In preparation for the upgrade, we present beam dynamics studies of the booster section of the normal conducting (NC) REX-ISOLDE linac, focused on the longitudinal development of the beam in the 101.28 MHz Interdigital H-mode Structure (IHS), employing a Combined Zero Degree Structure (KONUS), pulsing at a high gradient of over 3 MV/m. The evolution of the transverse emittanc…
A 162.5 MHz, 2.1 MeV Radio Frequency Quadruples (RFQ) structure is being designed for the Injector Scheme II of China Accelerator Driver System (CADS) driver linac. The RFQ will operate at continuous wave (CW) mode as required. For the CW normal conducting machine, the heat management will be one of the most important issues, since the temperature fluctuation may cause cavity deformation and leading to the resonant frequency shift. Therefor a detailed multi-physics analysis is necessary to ensure that the cavity can be stably worked at the required power level. The multi-physics analysis proce…
Significant transient beam loading effects were observed during beam commissioning tests of prototype II of the injector for the Accelerator Driven Sub-critical (ADS) system, which took place at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, between October and December 2014. During these tests experiments were performed with CW operation of the cavities with pulsed beam current, and the system was configured to make use of a prototype digital low level radio frequency (LLRF) controller. The system was originally operated in pulsed mode with a simple PID feedback control algorit…
In order to update the beam power from 100 kW to 250 kW in China spallation neutron source (CSNS) Phase II, one of the important measures is to replace the 80 meters long beam transport line between the present 80 MeV linac injector and the RCS to another kind of acceleration structure. In this paper, we proposed a scheme based on 324 MHz double-spoke superconducting cavities. Unlike the superconducting elliptical cavity and normal conducting CCL structure, the double-spoke cavity belongs to TE mode structure and has smaller transvers dimension compared with that of TH mode one. It can work at…
IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV / 100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results were met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be st…
KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts we…
We present a detailed study of the six-dimensional phase space of the electron beam produced by the Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector, a high-brightness, high repetition rate (1.3 GHz) DC photoemission source designed to drive a hard x-ray energy recovery linac (ERL). A complete simulation model of the injector has been constructed, verified by measurement, and optimized. Both the horizontal and vertical 2D transverse phase spaces, as well as the time-resolved (sliced) horizontal phase space, were simulated and directly measured at the end of the injector for 19 pC and 77 pC bunches …
The injector (Scheme-I) of the C-ADS linac is a 10-mA 10-MeV proton linac working in CW mode. It is mainly comprised of a 3.2-MeV room-temperature 4-vane RFQ and twelve superconducting single-spoke cavities housed in a long cryostat. Error analysis including alignment and field errors, static and dynamic ones for the injector are presented. Based on detailed numerical simulations, an orbit correction scheme has been designed. It shows that with correction the rms residual orbit errors can be controlled within 0.3 mm and a beam loss rate of 1.7*10^-6 is obtained. To reduce the beam loss rate fu…
The use of existing linacs, and in particular light source injectors, for free-electron laser (FEL) experiments is becoming more common due to the desire to test FELs at ever shorter wavelengths. The high-brightness, high-current beams required by high-gain FELs impose technical specifications that most existing linacs were not designed to meet. Moreover, the need for specialized diagnostics, especially shot-to-shot data acquisition, demands substantial modification and upgrade of conventional linacs. Improvements have been made to the Advanced Photon Source (APS) injector linac in order to pr…
We integrated an injector linac control system to the SPring-8 standard system on September 2000. As a result of this integration, the SPring-8 accelerator complex was controlled by one unified system. Because the linac was continuously running as the electron beam injector not only for the SPring-8 storage ring but also for New SUBARU, we had to minimize the hardware modification to reduce the time for the development and testing of the new control system. The integration method was almost the same as that of the integration of the booster synchrotron. We report here on the integration of the…
The disassembly of the Unilac prestripper linac of the Wideroe type took place at the beginning of 1999. An increase of more than two orders of magnitude in particle number for the most heavy elements in the SIS had to be gained. Since that time the new High Current Injector (HSI) consisting of H-type RFQ and DTL-structures for dual beam operation was installed and successfully commissioned. The High Charge Injector (HLI) supplied the main linac during that time. Simultaneously conditioning and running in of the rf-transmitters and rf-structures were done. The HSI commissioning strategy includ…
A Hybrid single cavity (HSC) linac, which is formed by combining a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) structure and a drift tube (DT) structure into one interdigital-H (IH) cavity, is fabricated and assembled as a proof of principle (PoP) type injector for cancer therapy synchrotron according to the series researches. The injection method of the HSC linac adopt a direct plasma injection scheme (DPIS), which is considered to be the only method for accelerating an intense current heavy ion beam produced by a laser ion source (LIS). The input beam current of the HSC was designed to be 20 milliamper…
This paper presents the modeling of time-structured multiturn injection for an upgraded Main Injector with the 8-GeV Superconducting RF proton driver, or an ILC-style linac, or a Project-X linac. The Radio-Frequency mismatch between a linac and the upgraded Main Injector will induce parasitic longitudinal painting in RF-phase direction. Several different scenarios with a choice of different RF parameters for single RF system and double RF system in the presence of longitudinal space charge have been investigated. From the studies of microbunch injection with the aid of ESME (2003) numerical si…
The PLS-II has a 100 MeV pre-injector for the 3 GeV Linac. A thermionic gun produces electron charge of 200 pC with a bunch duration of 500 ps by a 250 ps triggering pulser. At the pre-injector, one of the most important beam parameters to identify the beam quality is a transverse emittance of electron bunches. Therefore we measure the beam emittance and twiss functions at 100 MeV in order to match the beam optics to beam transport line and go through it to the storage ring. To get the transverse emittance measurement, well-known technique, quadrupole scan, is used at the pre-injector. The emi…
An S-band linear accelerator is the source of particles and the front end of the Advanced Photon Source injector. In addition, it supports a low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) and drives a free-electron laser (FEL). A waveguide-switching and distribution system is now under construction. The system configuration was revised to be consistent with the recent change to electron-only operation. There are now six modulator-klystron subsystems, two of which are being configured to act as hot spares for two S-band transmitters each, so that no single failure will prevent injector operation. The t…
Main parameters and the physics search potentials of the linac-ring type lepton-hadron and photon-hadron colliders are discussed. The THERA (TESLA on HERA), NLC-LHC and CLIC-VLHC proposals are considered.
Dipole wakefields in NLC (Next Linear Collider) structures have been measured with ASSET [1] and well predicted by a circuit model [2]. However, the experimental technique is both time-consuming and expensive. Here, we report on kick factor and synchronous frequency determination for 1st and higher order dipole bands for TW (Traveling Wave) accelerators via a wire measurement technique. This stand-alone technique is relatively inexpensive and may lead to an efficient determination of wakefield parameters. The perturbative effect of the wire on the dipole band is pointed out and a two-wire sche…
The energy recovery linac test facility (ERL-TF), a compact ERL-FEL (free electron laser) two-purpose machine, was proposed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing. As one important component of the ERL-TF, the photo-injector started with a photocathode direct-current gun has been designed. In this paper optimization of the injector beam dynamics in low-charge operation mode is performed with iterative scans using Impact-T. In addition, the dependencies between the optimized beam quality and the initial offset at cathode and element parameters are investigated. The tolerance of alignm…
The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) was formed in late 2011 to address important and necessary upgrades to the Proton Source machines (Injector line, Linac and Booster). The goal is to increase the proton flux by doubling the Booster beam cycle rate while maintaining the same intensity per cycle, the same uptime, and the same residual activation in the enclosure. For the Linac, the main focus within PIP is to address reliability. One of the main tasks is to replace the present hard-tube modulator used on the 200 MHz RF system. Plans to replace this high power system with a Marx-topology…
A series of beam dynamic studies were performed in 2020-2021 at the PIP-II Injector Test Facility (PIP2IT) that has been built to validate the concept of the front-end of the PIP-II linac being constructed at Fermilab. PIP2IT is comprised of a 30-keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1- MeV CW RFQ, followed by a 10-m Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), 2 cryomodules accelerating the beam to 16 MeV and a High-Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) bringing the beam to a dump. This paper presents beam dynamics - related measurements performed at PIP2IT such as the Twiss para…
Louisiana State University Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) began a control system upgrade project in early 1997. At the time, the storage ring was controlled by a VAX/VMS system, primarily using CAMAC for I/O. The injector Linac was controlled by a separate VME/OS/9 system using custom I/O components. The storage ring control system has been replaced with a PC/Linux based system, utilizing the existing CAMAC subsystem [1]. In an effort to both migrate channels away from CAMAC, and integrate the Linac controls with the storage ring controls, a design for upgrades utilizin…
A CW-compatible, pulsed H- superconducting linac "PIP-II" is being planned to upgrade Fermilab's injection complex. To validate the front-end concept, a test accelerator (The PIP-II Injector Test, formerly known as "PXIE") is under construction. The warm part of this accelerator comprises a 10 mA DC, 30 keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1 MeV Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) capable of operation in Continuous Wave (CW) mode, and a 10 m-long Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT). The paper will report on the installation of the RFQ and the first sections of the M…
The GSI Unilac was upgraded as a high current injector for the SIS in 1999. Therefore, the stripping section [1] at 1.4 MeV/u, where a beam transport under highest space charge conditions and multi beam operation had to be established, was completely new designed. Results of the commissioning of the stripper section will be presented. The beam transport to the new gas stripper, and the charge state analysis under space charge conditions confirmed the calculations. A 238U4+ beam - coming from a MEVVA ion source and accelerated by the new injector linac- was stripped (with the expected stripping…
The complexity of the Round Damped Detuned Structue (RDDS) for the JLC/NLC main linac is driven by the considerations of rf efficiency and dipole wakefield suppression. As a time and cost saving measure for the JLC/NLC, the dimensions of the 3D RDDS cell are being determined through computer modeling to within fabrication precision so that no tuning may be needed once the structures are assembled. The tolerances on the frequency errors for the RDDS structure are about one MHz for the fundamental mode and a few MHz for the dipole modes. At the X-band frequency, these correspond to errors of a m…
In damping the wakefield generated by an electron beam traversing several thousand X-band linacs in the NLC we utilise a Gaussian frequency distribution of dipole modes to force the modes to deconstructively interfere, supplemented with moderate damping achieved by coupling these modes to four attached manifolds. Most of these modes are adequately damped by the manifolds. However, the modes towards the high frequency end of the lower dipole band are not adequately damped because the last few cells are, due to mechanical fabrication requirements, not coupled to the manifolds. To mitigate this p…
The UNILAC was improved for high current performance by replacing the Wideroe prestripper accelerator by an RFQ and an IH-type DTL. In addition, one of two ion source terminals was equipped with high current sources of MUCIS- and MEVVA-type. Therefore, a redesign of the LEBT from the ion source to the RFQ entrance was necessary. The new LEBT was installed at the beginning of 1999. The commissioning was carried mainly with a high intense argon beam. The achieved 17 emA Ar+ are 6 emA above the RFQ design intensity. The expected performance of the new LEBT was achieved: full transmission for high…
Over the past decade, Fermilab has focused efforts on the intensity frontier physics and is committed to increase the average beam power delivered to the neutrino and muon programs substantially. Many upgrades to the existing injector accelerators, namely, the current 400 MeV LINAC and the Booster, are in progress under the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP). Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) proposes to replace the existing 400 MeV LINAC by a new 800 MeV LINAC, as an injector to the Booster which will increase Booster output power by nearly a factor of two from the PIP design value by the end of…
