The PLS-II has a 100 MeV pre-injector for the 3 GeV Linac. A thermionic gun produces electron charge of 200 pC with a bunch duration of 500 ps by a 250 ps triggering pulser. At the pre-injector, one of the most important beam parameters to identify the beam quality is a transverse emittance of electron bunches. Therefore we measure the beam emittance and twiss functions at 100 MeV in order to match the beam optics to beam transport line and go through it to the storage ring. To get the transverse emittance measurement, well-known technique, quadrupole scan, is used at the pre-injector. The emittance were 0.591 mm-mrad in horizontal and 0.774 mm-mrad in vertical direction.
A non-invasive, compact laserwire system has been developed to measure the transverse emittance of an H- beam and has been demonstrated at the new LINAC4 injector for the LHC at CERN. Light from a low power, pulsed laser source is conveyed via fibre to collide with the H- beam, a fraction of which is neutralized and then intercepted by a downstream diamond detector. Scanning the focused laser across the H- beam and measuring the distribution of the photo-neutralized particles enables the transverse emittance to be reconstructed. The vertical phase-space distribution of a 3 MeV beam during LINA…
The Fermilab Linac delivers a variable intensity, 400-MeV beam to the The MuCool Test Area experimental hall via a beam line specifically designed to facilitate measurements of the Linac beam emittance and properties. A 10 m, dispersion-free and magnet-free straight utilizes an upstream quadrupole focusing triplet in combination with the necessary in-straight beam diagnostics to fully characterize the transverse beam properties. Since the Linac does not produce a strictly elliptical phase space, tomography must be performed on the profile data to retrieve the actual particle distribution in ph…
For injection of beams into circular machines with different horizontal and vertical emittance acceptance, the injection efficiency can be increased if these beams are flat, i.e. if they feature unequal transverse emittances. Generation of flat electron beams is well known and has been demonstrated already in beam experiments. It was proposed also for ion beams that were generated in an Electron Cyclotron-Resonance (ECR) source. We introduce an extension of the method to beams that underwent charge state stripping without requiring their generation inside an ECR source. Results from multi-part…
Within the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU), the new LINAC4 is currently being commissioned to replace the existing LINAC2 proton source at CERN. After the expected completion at the end of 2016, the LINAC4 will accelerate H- ions to 160 MeV. To measure the transverse emittance of the H- beam, a method based on photo-detachment is proposed. This system will operate using a pulsed laser with light delivered via an optical fibre and subsequently focused through a thin slice of the H- beam. The laser photons have sufficient energy to detach the outer electron and create H0/e- pairs. In…
The MTA beam line has been specifically designed to facilitate measurements of the Fermilab Linac beam emittance and properties utilizing a long, 10m, element-free straight. Linac beam is extracted downstream of the 400-MeV electrostatic chopper located in the Booster injection line. This chopper cannot be utilized for MTA beam, and therefore the entire Linac beam pulse is directed into the MTA beamline. Pulse length manipulation is provided by the 750-keV electrostatic chopper at the upstream end of the Linac and, using this device, beam can be delivered from 8 μsec up to the full 50 μsec Lin…
We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons…
We present a detailed study of the six-dimensional phase space of the electron beam produced by the Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector, a high-brightness, high repetition rate (1.3 GHz) DC photoemission source designed to drive a hard x-ray energy recovery linac (ERL). A complete simulation model of the injector has been constructed, verified by measurement, and optimized. Both the horizontal and vertical 2D transverse phase spaces, as well as the time-resolved (sliced) horizontal phase space, were simulated and directly measured at the end of the injector for 19 pC and 77 pC bunches …
The ADS accelerator in China is a CW (Continuous-Wave) proton linac with 1.5 GeV in beam energy, 10 mA in beam current, and 15 MW in beam power. To meet the extremely low beam loss rate requirement and high reliability, it is very important to study the beam halo caused by beam mismatch, which is one major source of beam loss. To avoid the envelope instability, the phase advances per period are all smaller than 90 degree in the main linac design. In this paper, the results of the emittance growth and the envelope oscillations caused by mismatch in the main linac section are presented. To meet …
We present the results of transverse emittance and longitudinal current profile measurements of high bunch charge (greater than or equal to 100 pC) beams produced in the DC gun-based Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector. In particular, we show that the cathode thermal and core beam emittances dominate the final 95% and core emittance measured at 9-9.5 MeV. Additionally, we demonstrate excellent agreement between optimized 3D space charge simulations and measurement, and show that the quality of the transverse laser distribution limits the optimal simulated and measured emittances. These…
The implications of long-range wakefields on the beam quality are investigated through a detailed beam dynamics study. Injection offsets are considered and the resulting emittance dilution recorded, including systematic sources of error. These simulations have been conducted for damped and detuned structures (DDS) and for waveguide damped structures-both for the CLIC collider.

To realize and test advanced accelerator concepts and hardware, a beamline is being reconfigured in the Linac Extension Area (LEA) of APS linac. A photo-cathode RF gun installed at the beginning of the APS linac will provide a low emittance electron beam into the LEA beamline. The thermionic RF gun beam for the APS storage ring, and the photo-cathode RF gun beam for LEA beamline will be accelerated through the linac in an interleaved fashion. In this paper, the design studies for interleaving lattice realization in APS linac is described with initial experiment result
In this paper we discuss design considerations and beam dynamics challenges associated with laser-driven plasma-based accelerators as applied to multi-TeV-scale linear colliders. Plasma accelerators provide ultra-high gradients and ultra-short bunches, offering the potential for compact linacs and reduced power requirements. We show that stable, efficient acceleration with beam quality preservation is possible in the nonlinear bubble regime of laser-plasma accelerators using beam shaping. Ion motion, naturally occuring for dense beams (i.e., low emittance and high energy) severely damps transv…
The Fermilab Linac delivers 400 MeV H- beam to the rest of the accelerator chain. Providing stable intensity, energy, and emittance is key since it directly affects downstream machines. To counter fluctuations of Linac output due to various effects to be described below we are working on implementing dynamic longitudinal parameter optimization based on Machine Learning (ML). As inputs for the ML model, signals from beam diagnostics have to be well understood and reliable. In this paper we discuss the status and plans for ML-based optimization as well as preliminary results of diagnostics studi…
The CSR-LINAC injector has been proposed in Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The linac mainly consists of two parts, the RFQ and the IH-DTL. The KONUS (Kombinierte Null Grad Struktur) concept has been introduced into the DTL section. In this paper, the re-matching of the main accelerating section will be finished in the 3.7 MeV/u scheme and the new beam dynamics design up to 7 MeV/u will be also shown. Through the beam re-matching, the relative emittance growth has been suppressed greatly along the linac.
We show that the difference resonance driven by the space charge pseudo-octupole of high-intensity beams not only couples the beam core emittances; it can also lead to emittance exchange in the beam halo, which is of relevance for beam loss in high intensity accelerators. With reference to linear accelerators the "main resonance" kz/kxy =1 (corresponding to the Montague resonance 2Qx-2Qy=0 in circular accelerators) may lead to such a coupling and transfer of halo between planes. Coupling of transverse halo into the longitudinal plane - or vice versa - can occur even if the core (rms) emittance…
The dynamical effects inducing geometrical and phase space misalignment of bunch slice in X-ray operating Free Electron Lasers can be traced back to a plethora of phenomena, both in the linac accelerating section or inside the beam transport optic magnet. They are responsible for a spoiling of the beam projected qualities and induce, if not properly corrected, an increase of the saturation length and a decreasing of the output power. We discuss the inclusion of these effects in models employing scaling formulae.
The effects on beam dynamics from long-range and short-range wakefields from TESLA-type cavities are considered in regard to a proposed FEL oscillator (FE-LO) operating at 120 nm. This would be driven by the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) linac at 300 MeV with a 3-MHz micropulse repetition rate. Our wakefield studies showed measurable effects on submacropulse centroid stability and on submicropulse head-tail kicks that can lead to emittance degradation. In the case of the former, we use MINERVA/OPC to simulate the ~100-$μ$m centroid slew effects on the saturated output powe…
A superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) photo injector is in operation at the electron linac for beams with high brilliance and low emittance (ELBE) radiation center and generates continuous wave (CW) electron beams with high average current and high brightness for user operation since 2018. The speed of emittance measurement at the SRF gun beamline can be increased by improving the slit-scan system, thus the measurement time for one phase space mapping can be shortened from about 15 minutes to 90 seconds. A parallel algorithm and machine learning have been used to reduce the beamlet image noi…
PIP-II is an essential upgrade of the Fermilab complex that will enable the worlds most intense high-energy beam of neutrinos for the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at LBNF and support a broad physics program at Fermilab. Ultimately, the PIP-II superconducting linac will be capable of accelerating the $H-$ CW beam to 800 MeV with an average power of 1.6 MW. To operate the linac with such high power, beam losses and beam emittance growth must be tightly controlled. In this paper, we present the results of global optimization of the Linac options towards a robust and efficien…
The aim of the FLASH linac is to create electron bunches of small transverse emittance and high current for the free electron laser facility FLASH at DESY. Available operational experience indicates that in order to optimize SASE signal at different wavelengths or to fine-tune the FEL wavelength, empirical adjustment of the machine parameters is required and, therefore, the sensitivity of the beamline to small changes in the beam energy and in the magnet settings becomes one of the important issues which affects both, the final performance and the reproducibility of the results after breaks in…

The coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effect in a bending path plays an important role in transverse emittance dilution in high-brightness light sources and linear colliders, where the electron beams are of short bunch length and high peak current. Suppression of the emittance growth induced by CSR is critical to preserve the beam quality and help improve the machine performance. It has been shown that the CSR effect in a double-bend achromat (DBA) can be analyzed with the two-dimensional point-kick analysis method. In this paper, this method is applied to analyze the CSR effect in a triple…
It is well-known that the electron beam quality required for applications such as FELs and ultra-fast electron diffraction can be degraded by the asymmetric fields introduced by the RF couplers of superconducting linacs. This effect is especially troublesome in the injector where the low energy beam from the gun is captured into the first high gradient accelerator section. Unfortunately modifying the established cavity design is expensive and time consuming, especially considering that only one or two sections are needed for an injector. Instead, it is important to analyze the coupler fields t…
Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. First stage of the Project-X consists of superconducting linac which will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode to accelerate the beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The operation at CW mode puts high tolerances on the beam line components, particularly on radiofrequency (RF) cavity. The failure of beam line elements at low energy is very critical as it results in mis-match of the beam with the following sections due to different beam parameters than designed parameter. It makes the beam unstable which causes emit…
The first phase of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN consists of a superconducting (SC) linac upgrade in order to increase the energy of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams from 2.8 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u (for A/q = 4.5). In preparation for the upgrade, we present beam dynamics studies of the booster section of the normal conducting (NC) REX-ISOLDE linac, focused on the longitudinal development of the beam in the 101.28 MHz Interdigital H-mode Structure (IHS), employing a Combined Zero Degree Structure (KONUS), pulsing at a high gradient of over 3 MV/m. The evolution of the transverse emittanc…
The paper proposes a method of finding the beam loss locations in a linac. If the beam is scraped at an aperture limitation, moving its centroid with two dipole correctors located upstream and oscillating in sync produces a line at the corresponding frequency in spectra of current-sensitive devices downstream of the loss point. The phase of this signal contains information about the location of the beam loss. Similar lines appear also in the position signals of Beam Position Monitors (BPMs). The phases of the BPM position lines change monotonically (within each 2π) along the linac and can be u…
The upgrade of the normal conducting (NC) Radioactive Ion Beam EXperiment (REX)-ISOLDE heavy ion accelerator at CERN, under the High Intensity and Energy (HIE)-ISOLDE framework, proposes the use of superconducting (SC) quarter-wave resonators (QWRs) to increase the energy capability of the facility from 3 MeV/u to beyond 10 MeV/u. A beam dynamics study of a lattice design comprising SC QWRs and SC solenoids has confirmed the design's ability to accelerate ions, with a mass-to-charge ratio in the range 2.5 < A/q < 4.5, to the target energy with a minimal emittance increase. We report on the dev…
The injection system of the China Spallation Neutron Source uses H- stripping and phase space painting method to fill large ring acceptance with the linac beam of small emittance. The emittance evolution, beam losses, and collimation efficiency during the injection procedures for different injection parameters, such as the injection emittances, starting injection time, twiss parameters and momentum spread, were studied, and then the optimized injection parameters was obtained. In addition, the phase space painting scheme which also affect the emittance evolution and beam losses were simulated …
Longitudinal space charge (LSC) effects are generally considered harmful in free-electron lasers as they can seed unfavorable energy modulations that can result in density modulations with associated emittance dilution. It was pointed out, however, that such "micro-bunching instabilities" could be potentially useful to support the generation of broadband coherent radiation. Therefore there has been an increasing interest in devising accelerator beam lines capable of controlling LSC induced density modulations. In the present paper we augment these previous investigations by combining a grid-le…
One of the challenge of future muon colliders is the production of muon beams carrying high phase space densities. In particular the muon beam normalised transverse emittance is a relevant figure of merit to meet luminosity requests. A typical issue impacting the achieved transverse emittance in muon collider schemes so far considered is the phase space dilution caused by coulomb interaction of primary particles propagating into the target where muons are generated. In this study we present a new scheme for muon beam generation occurring in vacuum by interactions of electron and photon beams. …
We propose and demonstrate that a gamma-gamma collider with W_gg < 12 GeV can be added to the European XFEL with a minimal disruption to its main program. High-energy photons will be obtained by Compton scattering of 0.5 micron laser photons on the existing 17.5 GeV electron beams. Such a gamma-gamma collider would be an excellent place for the development and application of modern technologies: powerful lasers, optical cavities, superconducting linacs, and low-emittance electron sources -- as well as training the next generation of accelerator physicists and engineers. The physics program wou…
The superconducting upgrade of the REX-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam (RIB) post-accelerator at CERN will utilise a compact lattice comprising quarter-wave resonators (QWRs) and solenoids, accelerating beams in the mass range 2.5 < A/q < 4.5 to over 10 MeV/u. The short and independently phased quarter-wave structures allow for the acceleration of RIBs over a variable velocity profile and provide an unrivalled longitudinal acceptance when coupled with solenoid focusing. The incorporation of the solenoids into the cryomodule shortens the linac, whilst maximising the acceptance, but the application …
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) uses H- stripping and phase space painting method to fill large ring acceptance with the linac beam of small emittance. The dependence of the painting beam on the injection beam parameters was studied for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of CSNS. The injection processes for different momentum spread, rms emittance of the injection beam, injection beam matching were simulated, then the beam losses, 99% and rms emittances were obtained and the optimized ranges of injection beam parameters were given. The interaction between the H- beam and the stripp…
