This paper has two purposes. The first is to explicate the diagrammatic approach to Hopf algebras due to Kuperberg, and to examine his proof of the existence and uniqueness of integrals in both the diagrammatic and purely algebraic contexts. The second purpose of the paper is to show that the theory of integrals for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra A can be deduced from ideas concerning the trace function on End(A). Connections between Kuperberg's work and the trace function should be of interest to those who study three manifold invariants in relation to Hopf algebras.
The left and right homological integrals are introduced for a large class of infinite dimensional Hopf algebras. Using the homological integrals we prove a version of Maschke's theorem for infinite dimensional Hopf algebras. The generalization of Maschke's theorem and homological integrals are the keys to study noetherian regular Hopf algebras of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension one.
A classical result in the theory of Hopf algebras concerns the uniqueness and existence of integrals: for an arbitrary Hopf algebra, the integral space has dimension $\leq 1$, and for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, this dimension is exaclty one. We generalize these results to quasi-Hopf algebras and dual quasi-Hopf algebras. In particular, it will follow that the bijectivity of the antipode follows from the other axioms of a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra. We give a new version of the Fundamental Theorem for quasi-Hopf algebras. We show that a dual quasi-Hopf algebra is co-Frobenius…
Integrals in Hopf algebras are an essential tool in studying finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their action on algebras. Over fields it has been shown by Sweedler that the existence of integrals in a Hopf algebra is equivalent to the Hopf algebra being finite dimensional. In this paper we examine how much of this is true for Hopf algebras over rings. We show that over any commutative ring R that is not a field there exists a Hopf algebra H over R containing a non-zero integral but not being finitely generated as R-module. On the contrary we show that Sweedler's equivalence is still valid fo…
The faithful quasi-dual $H^d$ and strict quasi-dual $H^{d'}$ of an infinite braided Hopf algebra $H$ are introduced and it is proved that every strict quasi-dual $H^{d'}$ is an $H$-Hopf module. The connection between the integrals and the maximal rational $H^{d}$-submodule $H^{d rat}$ of $H^{d}$ is found. That is, $H^{d rat}\cong \int ^l_{H^d} \otimes H$ is proved. The existence and uniqueness of integrals for braided Hopf algebras in the Yetter-Drinfeld category $(^B_B{\cal YD},C)$ are given.
Two new results concerning complements in a semisimple Hopf algebra are proved. They extend some well known results from group theory. The uniqueness of Krull Schmidt Remak type decomposition is proved for semisimple completely reducible Hopf algebras.
We generalize the results on existence and uniqueness of integrals from compact groups and Hopf algebras in a pure (co)algebraic setting, and find a series of new results on (quasi)-co-Frobenius and semiperfect coalgebras. For a coalgebra $C$, we introduce the generalized space of integrals $\int_M=\Hom^C(C,M)$ associated to a right $C$-comodule $M$ and study connections between "uniqueness of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\leq \dim(M)$ and "existence of integrals" $\dim(\int_M)\geq \dim(M)$ for all $M$ and representation theoretic properties of $C$: (quasi)-co-Frobenius, semiperfect. We show that a…
In this work we study some properties of comldules over (non-cosemisimple) Hopf algebras possessing integrals, which are also called co-Frobenius Hopf algebras. We apply the result obtained to the classification of representations of quantum groups of type $A_{0|0}$.
The theory of integrals is used to analyse the structure of Hopf algebroids, introduced in math.QA/0302325. We prove that the total algebra of the Hopf algebroid is a separable extension of the base algebra if and only if it is a semi-simple extension and if and only if the Hopf algebroid possesses a normalized integral. The total algebra of a finitely generated and projective Hopf algebroid is a Frobenius extension of the base algebrahe Hopf algebroid possesses anormalized integral. We give also a sufficient and necessary condition in terms of integrals under which it is a quasi-Frobenius ext…
We generalize the fundamental structure Theorem on Hopf (bi)-modules by Larson and Sweedler to quasi-Hopf algebras H. If H is finite dimensional this proves the existence and uniqueness (up to scalar multiples) of integrals in H. Among other applications we prove a Maschke type Theorem for diagonal crossed products as constructed by the authors.
For $A$ a Hopf algebra of arbitrary dimension over a field $K$, it is well-known that if $A$ has nonzero integrals, or, in other words, if the coalgebra $A$ is co-Frobenius, then the space of integrals is one-dimensional and the antipode of $A$ is bijective. Bulacu and Caenepeel recently showed that if $H$ is a dual quasi-Hopf algebra with nonzero integrals, then the space of integrals is one-dimensional, and the antipode is injective. In this short note we show that the antipode is bijective.
We recall the notion of a Hopf (co)quasigroup defined in \cite{Kl09} and define integration and Fourier Transforms on these objects analogous to those in the theory of Hopf algebras. Using the general Hopf module theory for Hopf (co)quasigroups from \cite{Br09} we show that a finite dimensional Hopf (co)quasigroup has a unique integration up to scale and an invertible antipode. We also supply the inverse Fourier transformation and show that it maps the convolution product on $H$ to the product in its dual $H^*$. Finally, we further develop the theory to consider Frobenius Hopf (co)quasigroups,…
Motivated by the study of depth 2 Frobenius extensions we introduce a new notion of Hopf algebroid. It is a 2-sided bialgebroid with a bijective antipode which connects the two, left and right handed, structures. While all the interesting examples of the Hopf algebroid of J.H. Lu turn out to be Hopf algebroids in the sense of this paper, there exist simple examples showing that our definition is not a special case of Lu's. Our Hopf algebroids, however, belong to the class of $\times_L$-Hopf algebras proposed by P. Schauenburg. After discussing the axioms and some examples we study the theory o…
We use integrals of left coideal subalgebras to develop Harmonic analysis for semisimple Hopf algebras. We show how $N^*,$ the space of functional on $N,$ is embedded in $H^*.$ We define a bilinear form on $N^*$ and show that irreducible $N$-characters are orthogonal with respect to that form. We then give an explicit formula for induced characters of $N$ and show how the induced characters are embedded in $R(H).$ In the second part we give an intrinsic definition for solvable semisimple Hopf algebras via left coideal subalgebras and their integrals. We show how this definition generalizes sol…
A Hopf algebra is co-Frobenius when it has a nonzero integral. It is proved that the composition length of the indecomposable injective comodules over a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is bounded. As a consequence, the coradical filtration of a co-Frobenius Hopf algebra is finite; this confirms a conjecture by Sorin Dăscălescu and the first author. The proof is of categorical nature and the same result is obtained for Frobenius tensor categories of subexponential growth. A family of co-Frobenius Hopf algebras that are not of finite type over their Hopf socles is constructed, answering so in the nega…
In this note, we show that Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode can be proven for any regular multiplier Hopf algebra with integrals (algebraic quantum groups). This of course not only includes the case of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra but also the case of any Hopf algebra with integrals (co-Frobenius Hopf algebras). The proof follows in a few lines from well-known formulas in the theory of regular multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals. We discuss these formulas and their importance in this theory. We also mention their generalizations to the (in a certain sense) more g…
Using the machinery provided by a Frobenius algebra we show how the antipode of a quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ carries out left or right cointegrals for $H$. These formulas will allow us to find out the explicit form of an integral and a cointegral for the quantum double $D(H)$ of $H$ in terms of those of $H$, and so to answer to a conjecture of Hausser and Nill raised at the end of the nineties.
We prove that a depth two Hopf subalgebra K of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is normal (where the ground field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero). This means on the one hand that a Hopf subalgebra is normal when inducing (then restricting) modules several times as opposed to one time creates no new simple constituents. This point of view was taken in the paper http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0409346 which established a normality result in case H and K are finite group algebras. On the other hand this means that K is normal in H when H | K is a Galois extension with respect to action o…
Every finite dimensional Hopf algebra is a Frobenius algebra, with Frobenius homomorphism given by an integral. The Nakayama automorphism determined by it yields a decomposition with degrees in a cyclic group. For a family of pointed Hopf algebras, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for this decomposition to be strongly graded.
We classify all noetherian Hopf algebras $H$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero which are integral domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two and satisfy the condition $\Ext^1_H(k,k)\neq 0$. The latter condition is conjecturally redundant, as no examples are known (among noetherian Hopf algebra domains of GK-dimension two) where it fails.
Any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra has a left and a right integral. Conversely, Larsen and Sweedler showed that, if a finite-dimensional algebra with identity and a comultiplication with counit has a faithful left integral, it has to be a Hopf algebra. In this paper, we generalize this result to possibly infinite-dimensional algebras, with or without identity. We have to leave the setting of Hopf algebras and work with multiplier Hopf algebras. Moreover, whereas in the finite-dimensional case, there is a complete symmetry between the bialgebra and its dual, this is no longer the case in infin…
Let H be a Hopf algebra in a rigid braided monoidal category with split idempotents. We prove the existence of integrals on (in) H characterized by the universal property, employing results about Hopf modules, and show that their common target (source) object Int H is invertible. The fully braided version of Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode is obtained. Connections of integration with cross-product and transmutation are studied. The results apply to topological Hopf algebras, e.g. a torus with a hole, which do not have additive structure.
We generalize various properties of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over Hopf algebras to quasi-Hopf algebras. The dual of a finite dimensional Yetter-Drinfeld module is again a Yetter-Drinfeld module. The algebra $H_0$ in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules that can be obtained by modifying the multiplication in a proper way is quantum commutative. We give a Structure Theorem for Hopf modules in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules, and deduce the existence and uniqueness of integrals from it.
In this work we investigate partial actions of a Hopf algebra H on nonunital algebras and the associated partial smash products. We show that our partial actions correspond to nonunital algebras in the category of partial representations of H. The central problem of existence of a globalization for a partial action is studied in detail, and we provide sufficient conditions for the existence (and uniqueness) of a minimal globalization for associative algebras in general. Extending previous results by Abadie, Dokuchaev, Exel and Simon, we define Morita equivalence for partial Hopf actions, and w…
The Structure Theorem for Hopf modules states that if a bialgebra $H$ is a Hopf algebra (i.e. it is endowed with a so-called antipode) then every Hopf module $M$ is of the form ${M}^{\mathrm{co}{H}}\otimes H$, where ${M}^{\mathrm{co}{H}}$ denotes the space of coinvariant elements in $M$. Actually, it has been shown that this result characterizes Hopf algebras: $H$ is a Hopf algebra if and only if every Hopf module $M$ can be decomposed in such a way. The main aim of this paper is to extend this characterization to the framework of quasi-bialgebras by introducing the notion of preantipode and b…
We give an introduction to the theory of weak Hopf algebras proposed recently as a coassociative alternative of weak quasi-Hopf algebras. We follow an axiomatic approach keeping as close as possible to the "classical" theory of Hopf algebras. The emphasis is put on the new structure related to the presence of canonical subalgebras A^L and A^R in any weak Hopf algebra A that play the role of non-commutative numbers in many respects. A theory of integrals is developed in which we show how the algebraic properties of A, such as the Frobenius property, or semisimplicity, or innerness of the square…
In a recent paper the authors Beliakova, Blanchet and Gainutdinov have shown that the modified trace on the category $H$-pmod of the projective modules corresponds to the symmetrised integral on the finite dimensional pivotal Hopf algebra $H$. We generalize this fact to the context of $G$-graded categories and Hopf $G$-coalgebra studied by Turaev-Virelizier. We show that the symmetrised $G$-integral on a finite type pivotal Hopf $G$-coalgebra induces a modified trace in the associated $G$-graded category.
In this paper we present the general theory of cleft extensions for a cocommutative weak Hopf algebra $H$. For a weak left $H$-module algebra we obtain a bijective correspondence between the isomorphisms classes of $H$-cleft extensions $A_{H}\hookrightarrow A$, where $A_{H}$ is the subalgebra of coinvariants, and the equivalence classes of crossed systems for $H$ over $A_H$. Finally, we establish a bijection between the set of equivalence classes of crossed systems with a fixed weak $H$-module algebra structure and the second cohomology group $H_{φ_{Z(A_H)}}^2(H, Z(A_H))$, where $Z(A_H)$ is th…
We study integrals of Hopf monoids in duoidal endohom categories of naturally Frobenius map monoidales in monoidal bicategories. We prove two Maschke type theorems, relating the separability of the underlying monoid and comonoid, respectively, to the existence of normalized integrals. It covers the examples provided by Hopf monoids in braided monoidal categories, weak Hopf algebras, Hopf algebroids over central base algebras, Hopf monads on autonomous monoidal categories and Hopf categories.
We provide a very short approach to several fundamental results for Hopf algebras with nonzero integrals. Besides being short, our approach is the first to prove the bijectivity of the antipode without using the uniqueness of the integrals of Hopf algebras and to obtain the uniqueness of integrals as a corollary in a way similar to the classical theory of the Haar measure on compact groups.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of a Rota-Baxter paired module to study Rota-Baxter modules without necessarily a Rota-Baxter operator. We obtain two characterizations of Rota-Baxter paired modules, and give some basic properties of Rota-Baxter paired modules. Beginning with the connection between the notion of integrals in the representations of Hopf algebra and of the notion of an integral algebra as a motivation and special case of Rota-Baxter algebra of weight zero, we obtain a large number of Rota-Baxter paired modules from Hopf related algebras and modules, including semisimple H…
We introduce and investigate the basic properties of an involutory (dual) quasi-Hopf algebra. We also study the representations of an involutory quasi-Hopf algebra and prove that an involutory dual quasi-Hopf algebra with non-zero integral is cosemisimple.
We define and investigate pairings of multiplier Hopf algebras. It is shown that two dually paired regular multiplier Hopf ($*$-)algebras $A$ and $B$ yield a quantum double multiplier Hopf ($*$-)algebra which is again regular. Integrals on $A$ and $B$ induce an integral on the quantum double. The results generalize pairing and quantum double construction from ordinary Hopf algebras to multiplier Hopf algebras.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $q=p^m$, with $m \geq 1$ if $p \neq 2,3$ and $m>1$ otherwise. Let $Ω$ be any non-trivial twist for the complex group algebra of $\mathbf{PSL}_2(q)$ arising from a $2$-cocycle on an abelian subgroup of $\mathbf{PSL}_2(q)$. We show that the twisted Hopf algebra $(\mathbb{C} \mathbf{PSL}_2(q))_Ω$ does not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. The same conclusion is proved for the Suzuki groups, and for $\mathbf{SL}_3(p)$ when the twist stems from an abelian $p$-subgroup. This supplies new families of complex semisimple (and simple) Hopf algebras that do not admit …
In [1] a new notion of Hopf algebroid has been introduced. It was shown to be inequivalent to the structure introduced under the same name in [17]. We review this new notion of Hopf algebroid. We prove that two Hopf algebroids are isomorphic as bialgebroids if and only if their antipodes are related by a `twist' i.e. are deformed by the analogue of a character. A precise relation to weak Hopf algebras is given. After the review of the integral theory of Hopf algebroids we show how a right bialgebroid can be made a Hopf algebroid in the presence of a non-degenerate left integral. This can be in…
We prove a variety results on tensor product factorizations of finite dimensional Hopf algebras (more generally Hopf algebras satisfying chain conditions in suitable braided categories). The results are analogs of well-known results on direct product factorizations of finite groups (or groups with chain conditions) such as Fitting's Lemma and the uniqueness of the Krull-Remak-Schmidt factorization. We analyze the notion of normal (and conormal) Hopf algebra endomorphisms, and the structure of endomorphisms and automorphisms of tensor products. The results are then applied to compute the automo…
By weakening the counit and antipode axioms of a C*-Hopf algebra and allowing for the coassociative coproduct to be non-unital we obtain a quantum group, that we call a weak C*-Hopf algebra, which is sufficiently general to describe the symmetries of essentially arbitrary fusion rules. This amounts to generalizing the Baaj-Skandalis multiplicative unitaries to multipicative partial isometries. Every weak C*-Hopf algebra has a dual which is again a weak C*-Hopf algebra. An explicit example is presented with Lee-Yang fusion rules. We shortly discuss applications to amalgamated crossed products, …
In this paper we study the isotypic decomposition of the regular module of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a semisimple Hopf algebra, the idempotents realizing the isotypic decomposition can be explicitly expressed in terms of characters and the Haar integral. In this paper we investigate Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property, which are not necessarily semisimple. We find explicit expressions for idempotents in terms of Hopf-algebraic data, where the Haar integral is replaced by the regular character of the dual Hopf algebra.…
We extend the construction of the Hennings TQFT for ribbon Hopf algebras to the case of ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras as defined by Drinfeld. Calculations proceed in a similar fashion to the ordinary Hopf algebra case, but also require the handling of the non-trivial coassociator in the triple tensor product of the algebra as well as several special elements. The main technical difficulties we encounter are representing tangle categories in the non-associative setting, and the definition and use of integrals and cointegrals in the non-coassociative case. We therefore discuss the integral theory f…
In this paper, we show that total integrals and cointegrals are new sources of stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We explicitly show that how special types of total (co)integrals can be used to provide both (stable) anti Yetter-Drinfeld and Yetter- Drinfeld modules. We use these modules to classify total (co)integrals and (cleft) Hopf Galois (co)extensions for some examples of the Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebra, universal enveloping algebras and polynomial algebras.
We introduce the notions of categorical integrals and categorical cointegrals of a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ by using a certain adjunction between $\mathcal{C}$ and its Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$. These notions can be identified with integrals and cointegrals of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ if $\mathcal{C}$ is the representation category of $H$. We generalize basic results on integrals and cointegrals of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra (such as the existence, the uniqueness, and the Maschke theorem) to finite tensor categories. Motivated by results of Lore…
We give a pedagogical introduction to integration techniques appropriate for non-commutative spaces while presenting some new results as well. A rather detailed discussion outlines the motivation for adopting the Hopf algebra language. We then present some trace formulas for the integral on Hopf algebras and show how to treat the $\int 1=0$ case. We extend the discussion to braided Hopf algebras relying on diagrammatic techniques. The use of the general formulas is illustrated by explicitly worked out examples.
In this paper we construct and study the representation theory of a Hopf C^*-algebra with approximate unit, which constitutes quantum analogue of a compact group C^*-algebra. The construction is done by first introducing a convolution-product on an arbitrary Hopf algebra H with integral, and then constructing the L_2 and C^*-envelopes of H (with the new convolution-product) when H is a compact Hopf *-algebra.
Action of finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ on commutative $k-$algebra $A$ is considered. As a generalization of the well-known fact for finite groups S. Montgomery raised a problem in 1993 whether $A$ is integral over subalgebra of invariants $A^H$. Recently some new results were obtained. Using the properties of coradical filtration of pointed Hopf algebras we verified the truth of the hypothesis in tree different cases: 1) Hopf algebra $H$ is commutative; 2) char $k = p > 0$; 3) $A$ is integral domain. In spite of numerous partial positive results it turned out that hypothesis of S. Montg…
We define motivic iterated integrals on the affine line, and give a simple proof of the formula for the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of they make. We show that it encodes the group law in the automorphism group of certain non-commutative variety. We relate the coproduct with the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted planar trivalent trees - a planar decorated version of the Hopf algebra defined by Connes and Kreimer. As an application we derive explicit formulas for the coproduct in the motivic multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra. We give a criteria for a motivic iterated integral…
We introduce and study Hopf monads on autonomous categories (i.e., monoidal categories with duals). Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to a non-braided (and non-linear) setting. Indeed, any monoidal adjunction between autonomous categories gives rise to a Hopf monad. We extend many fundamental results of the theory of Hopf algebras (such as the decomposition of Hopf modules, the existence of integrals, Maschke's criterium of semisimplicity, etc...) to Hopf monads. We also introduce and study quasitriangular and ribbon Hopf monads (again defined in a non-braided setting).
Using an extension of the Kontsevich integral to tangles in handlebodies similar to a construction given by Andersen, Mattes and Reshetikhin, we construct a functor $Z:\mathcal{B}\to \widehat{\mathbb{A}}$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is the category of bottom tangles in handlebodies and $\widehat{\mathbb{A}}$ is the degree-completion of the category $\mathbb{A}$ of Jacobi diagrams in handlebodies. As a symmetric monoidal linear category, $\mathbb{A}$ is the linear PROP governing "Casimir Hopf algebras", which are cocommutative Hopf algebras equipped with a primitive invariant symmetric 2-tensor. The f…
"Co-Frobenius" coalgebras were introduced as dualizations of Frobenius algebras. Recently, it was shown in \cite{I} that they admit left-right symmetric characterizations analogue to those of Frobenius algebras: a coalgebra $C$ is co-Frobenius if and only if it is isomorphic to its rational dual. We consider the more general quasi-co-Frobenius (QcF) coalgebras; in the first main result we show that these also admit symmetric characterizations: a coalgebra is QcF if it is weakly isomorphic to its (left, or equivalently right) rational dual $Rat(C^*)$, in the sense that certain coproduct or prod…
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
This paper studies invariants of 3-manifolds derived from certain fin ite dimensional Hopf algebras. The invariants are based on right integrals for these algebras. It is shown that the resulting class of invariants is distinct from the class of Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants.
Proposing a certain category of bialgebroid maps we show that the balanced depth 2 extensions appear as they were the finitary Galois extensions in the context of quantum groupoid actions, i.e., actions by finite bialgebroids, weak bialgebras or weak Hopf algebras. We comment on deformation of weak bialgebras, on half grouplike elements, on uniqueness of weak Hopf algebra reconstructions and discuss the example of separable field extensions.
The second author constructed a topological ribbon Hopf algebra from the unrolled quantum group associated with the super Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$. We generalize this fact to the context of unrolled quantum groups and construct the associated topological ribbon Hopf algebras. Then we use such an algebra, the discrete Fourier transforms, a symmetrized graded integral and a modified trace to define a modified graded Hennings invariant. Finally, we use the notion of a modified integral to extend this invariant to empty manifolds and show that it recovers the CGP-invariant.
For a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $A$ with a nonzero left integral $Λ$, we investigate a relationship between $P_n(Λ)$ and $P_n^J(Λ)$, where $P_n$ and $P_n^J$ are respectively the $n$-th Sweedler power maps of $A$ and the twisted Hopf algebra $A^J$. We use this relation to give several invariants of the representation category Rep$(A)$ considered as a tensor category. As applications, we distinguish the representation categories of 12-dimensional pointed nonsemisimple Hopf algebras. Also, these invariants are sufficient to distinguish the representation categories Rep$(K_8)$, Rep$(\kk Q_8)…
For $G$ a commutative group, we give a purely Hopf $G$-coalgebra construction of $G$-colored $3$-manifolds invariants using the notion of modified integral.
