The theory of integrals is used to analyse the structure of Hopf algebroids, introduced in math.QA/0302325. We prove that the total algebra of the Hopf algebroid is a separable extension of the base algebra if and only if it is a semi-simple extension and if and only if the Hopf algebroid possesses a normalized integral. The total algebra of a finitely generated and projective Hopf algebroid is a Frobenius extension of the base algebrahe Hopf algebroid possesses anormalized integral. We give also a sufficient and necessary condition in terms of integrals under which it is a quasi-Frobenius extension and illustrate by an example that this condition does not hold true in general. Our results are generalizations of classical results on Hopf algebras.
We investigate the equivariant and Hopf-cyclic cohomology of module algebras over Hopf algebroids and derive their Morita invariance. For this, we use the tools developed by McCarthy for $k$-linear categories and subsequently by Kaygun and Khalkhali for a certain class of categories, called as $H$-categories, for a Hopf algebra $H$.
Multiplier Hopf algebroids are algebraic versions of quantum groupoids that generalize Hopf algebroids to the non-unital case and weak (multiplier) Hopf algebras to non-separable base algebras. The main structure maps of a multiplier Hopf algebroid are a left and a right comultiplication. We show that bijectivity of two associated canonical maps is equivalent to the existence of an antipode, discuss invertibility of the antipode, and present some examples and special cases.
Motivated by the study of depth 2 Frobenius extensions we introduce a new notion of Hopf algebroid. It is a 2-sided bialgebroid with a bijective antipode which connects the two, left and right handed, structures. While all the interesting examples of the Hopf algebroid of J.H. Lu turn out to be Hopf algebroids in the sense of this paper, there exist simple examples showing that our definition is not a special case of Lu's. Our Hopf algebroids, however, belong to the class of $\times_L$-Hopf algebras proposed by P. Schauenburg. After discussing the axioms and some examples we study the theory o…
In [1] a new notion of Hopf algebroid has been introduced. It was shown to be inequivalent to the structure introduced under the same name in [17]. We review this new notion of Hopf algebroid. We prove that two Hopf algebroids are isomorphic as bialgebroids if and only if their antipodes are related by a `twist' i.e. are deformed by the analogue of a character. A precise relation to weak Hopf algebras is given. After the review of the integral theory of Hopf algebroids we show how a right bialgebroid can be made a Hopf algebroid in the presence of a non-degenerate left integral. This can be in…
We show that the Ehresmann-Schauenburg bialgebroid of a quantum principal bundle $P$ or Hopf Galois extension with structure quantum group $H$ is in fact a left Hopf algebroid $L(P,H)$. We show further that if $H$ is coquasitriangular then $L(P,H)$ has an antipode map $S$ obeying certain minimal axioms. Trivial quantum principal bundles or cleft Hopf Galois extensions with base $B$ are known to be cocycle cross products $B\#_σH$ for a cocycle-action pair ($\vartriangleright$,$σ$) and we look at these of a certain `associative type' where $ \vartriangleright$ is an actual action. In this case a…
Hopf algebroids are generalization of Hopf algebras over non-commutative base rings. It consists of a left- and a right-bialgebroid structure related by a map called the antipode. However, if the base ring of a Hopf algebroid is commutative one does not necessarily have a Hopf algebra. Meanwhile, a Hopf category is the categorification of a Hopf algebra. It consists of a category enriched over a braided monoidal category such that every hom-set carries a coalgebra structure together with an antipode functor. In this article, we will introduce the notion of a topological Hopf category$-$ a smal…
We study Frobenius 1-morphisms $ı$ in an additive bicategory $\c$ satisfying the depth 2 condition. We show that the 2-endomorphism rings $\c^2(ı\x\ib,ı\x\ib)$ and $\c^2(\ib\xı,\ib\xı)$ can be equipped with dual Hopf algebroid structures. We prove also that a Hopf algebroid appears as the solution of the above abstract symmetry problem if and only if it possesses a two sided non-degenerate integral.
An s-set is an algebraic generalization of the regular s-manifold introduced by Kowalski, one of the generalized symmetric spaces in differential geometry. We prove that suitable s-sets give birth to dynamical Yang-Baxter maps, set-theoretic solutions to a version of the quantum dynamical Yang-Baxter equation. As an application, Hopf algebroids and rigid tensor categories are constructed by means of these dynamical Yang-Baxter maps.
Let $H$ be a $\times$-bialgebra in the sense of Takeuchi. We show that if $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, and if $H$ fulfills the finiteness condition necessary to define its skew dual $H^\vee$, then the coopposite of the latter is $\times$-Hopf as well. If in addition the coopposite $\times$-bialgebra of $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, then the coopposite of the Drinfeld double of $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, as is the Drinfeld double itself, under an additional finiteness condition.
We review recent progress in the study of cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras, Hopf algebroids, and invariant cyclic homology starting with the pioneering work of Connes-Moscovici.
A pseudo-Galois extension is shown to be a depth two extension. Studying its left bialgebroid, we construct an enveloping Hopf algebroid for the semi-direct product of groups, or more generally involutive Hopf algebras, and their module algebras. It is a type of cofibered sum of two inclusions of the Hopf algebra into the semi-direct product and its derived right crossed product. Van Oystaeyen and Panaite observe that this Hopf algebroid is non-trivially isomorphic to a Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebroid, which raises interesting comparative questions.
We give examples of Lie-Rinehart algebras whose enveloping algebra is not a full Hopf algebroid in the sense of Bohm and Szlachanyi. We construct these examples as quotients of a canonical Lie-Rinehart algebra over a Jacobi algebra which does admit an antipode.
We introduce the notion of Hopf algebroids, in which neither the total algebras nor the base algebras are required to be commutative. We give a class of Hopf algebroids associated to module algebras of the Drinfeld doubles of Hopf algebras when the $R$-matrices act properly. When this construction is applied to quantum groups, we get examples of quantum groupoids, which are semi-classical limits of Poisson groupoids. The example of quantum $sl(2)$ is worked out in details.
We give a systematic description of the cyclic cohomology theory of Hopf algebroids in terms of its associated category of modules. Then we introduce a dual cyclic homology theory by applying cyclic duality to the underlying cocyclic object. We derive general structure theorems for these theories in the special cases of commutative and cocommutative Hopf algebroids. Finally, we compute the cyclic theory in examples associated to Lie-Rinehart algebras and étale groupoids.
We construct new examples of left bialgebroids and Hopf algebroids, arising from noncommutative geometry. Given a first order differential calculus $Ω$ on an algebra $A$, with the space of left vector fields $\mathfrak{X}$, we construct a left $A$-bialgeroid $B\mathfrak{X}$, whose category of left modules is isomorphic to the category of left bimodule connections over the calculus. When $Ω$ is a pivotal bimodule, we construct a Hopf algebroid $H\mathfrak{X}$ over $A$, by restricting to a subcategory of bimodule connections which intertwine with both $Ω$ and $\mathfrak{X}$ in a compatible manne…
We present two classes of examples of Hopf algebroids associated with noncommutative principal bundles. The first comes from deforming the principal bundle while leaving unchanged the structure Hopf algebra. The second is related to deforming a quantum homogeneous space; this needs a careful deformation of the structure Hopf algebra in order to preserve the compatibilities between the Hopf algebra operations.
We build on our construction of Hopf algebroids from noncommutative calculi under the further assumption of surjectivity for the calculus. We also introduce the notions of Hopf ideals and isotopy quotients for arbitrary Hopf algebroids. Using these ingredients, we prove a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence for digraphs, by showing that the groupoid algebra of the fundamental groupoid of a digraph is isomorphic to the isotopy quotient of the Hopf algberoid corresponding to flat connections over the digraph.
We explore special features of the pair (U^*, U_*) formed by the right and left dual over a (left) bialgebroid U in case the bialgebroid is, in particular, a left Hopf algebroid. It turns out that there exists a bialgebroid morphism S^* from one dual to another that extends the construction of the antipode on the dual of a Hopf algebra, and which is an isomorphism if U is both a left and right Hopf algebroid. This structure is derived from Phung's categorical equivalence between left and right comodules over U without the need of a (Hopf algebroid) antipode, a result which we review and extend…
We develop the Tannaka-Krein duality for monoidal functors with target in the categories of bimodules over a ring. The $\coend$ of such a functor turns out to be a Hopf algebroid over this ring. Using the result of a previous paper we characterize a small abelian, locally finite rigid monoidal category as the category of rigid comodules over a transitive Hopf algebroid.
The notions of a cleft extension and a cross product with a Hopf algebroid are introduced and studied. In particular it is shown that an extension (with a Hopf algebroid $H= (H_L,H_R)$) is cleft if and only if it is $H_R$-Galois and has a normal basis property relative to the base ring $L$ of $H_L$. Cleft extensions are identified as crossed products with invertible cocycles. The relationship between the equivalence classes of crossed products and gauge transformations is established. Strong connections in cleft extensions are classified and sufficient conditions are derived for the Chern-Galo…
We apply categorical machinery to the problem of defining cyclic cohomology with coefficients in two particular cases, namely quasi-Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. In the case of the former, no definition was thus far available in the literature, and while a definition exists for the latter, we feel that our approach demystifies the seemingly arbitrary formulas present there. This paper emphasizes the importance of working with a biclosed monoidal category in order to obtain natural coefficients for a cyclic theory that are analogous to the stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules for Hopf…
Using the language of h-Hopf algebroids which was introduced by Etingof and Varchenko, we construct a dynamical quantum group, F_ell(GL(n)), from the elliptic solution of the quantum dynamical Yang-Baxter equation with spectral parameter associated to the Lie algebra sl_n. We apply the generalized FRST construction and obtain an h-bialgebroid F_ell(M(n)). Natural analogs of the exterior algebra and their matrix elements, elliptic minors, are defined and studied. We show how to use the cobraiding to prove that the elliptic determinant is central. Localizing at this determinant and constructing …
In this paper we establish a duality between etale Lie groupoids and a class of non-necessarily commutative algebras with a Hopf algebroid structure. For any etale Lie groupoid G over a manifold M, the groupoid algebra C_c(G) of smooth functions with compact support on G has a natural coalgebra structure over C_c(M) which makes it into a Hopf algebroid. Conversely, for any Hopf algebroid A over C_c(M) we construct the associated spectral etale Lie groupoid G_sp(A) over M such that G_sp(C_c(G)) is naturally isomorphic to G. Both these constructions are functorial, and C_c is fully faithful left…
An extension B\subset A of algebras over a commutative ring k is an H-extension for an L-bialgebroid H if A is an H-comodule algebra and B is the subalgebra of its coinvariants. It is H-Galois if the canonical map A\otimes_B A\to A\otimes_L H is an isomorphism or, equivalently, if the canonical coring (A\otimes_L H:A) is a Galois coring. In the case of a Hopf algebroid H=(H_L,H_R,S) any H_R-extension is shown to be also an H_L-extension. If the antipode is bijective then also the notions of H_R-Galois extensions and of H_L-Galois extensions are proven to coincide. Results about bijective entwi…
Two new realizations, denoted $U_{q,x}(\widehat{gl_2})$ and $U(R_{q,x}(\widehat{gl_2}))$ of the trigonometric dynamical quantum affine algebra $U_{q,λ}(\widehat{gl_2})$ are proposed, based on Drinfeld-currents and $RLL$ relations respectively, along with a Heisenberg algebra $\left\{P,Q\right\}$, with $x=q^{2P}$. Here $P$ plays the role of the dynamical variable $λ$ and $Q=\frac{\partial}{\partial P}$. An explicit isomorphism from $U_{q,x}(\widehat{gl_2})$ to $U(R_{q,x}(\widehat{gl_2}))$ is established, which is a dynamical extension of the Ding-Frenkel isomorphism of $U_{q}(\widehat{gl_2})$ w…
Any etale Lie groupoid G is completely determined by its associated convolution algebra C_c(G) equipped with the natural Hopf algebroid structure. We extend this result to the generalized morphisms between etale Lie groupoids: we show that any principal H-bundle P over G is uniquely determined by the associated C_c(G)-C_c(H)-bimodule C_c(P) equipped with the natural coalgebra structure. Furthermore, we prove that the functor C_c gives an equivalence between the Morita category of etale Lie groupoids and the Morita category of locally grouplike Hopf algebroids.
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
Comodule algebras of a Hopf algebroid H with a bijective antipode, i.e. algebra extensions B\subseteq A by H, are studied. Assuming that a lifted canonical map is a split epimorphism of modules of the non-commutative base algebra of H, relative injectivity of the H-comodule algebra A is related to the Galois property of the extension B\subseteq A and also to the equivalence of the category of relative Hopf modules to the category of B-modules. This extends a classical theorem by H.-J. Schneider on Galois extensions by a Hopf algebra. Our main tool is an observation that relative injectivity of…
In our earlier article [Lett. Math. Phys. 107 (2017), 475-503, arXiv:1409.8188], we explicitly described a topological Hopf algebroid playing the role of the noncommutative phase space of Lie algebra type. Ping Xu has shown that every deformation quantization leads to a Drinfeld twist of the associative bialgebroid of h-adic series of differential operators on a fixed Poisson manifold. In the case of linear Poisson structures, the twisted bialgebroid essentially coincides with our construction. Using our explicit description of the Hopf algebroid, we compute the corresponding Drinfeld twist ex…
Recently, S. Meljanac proposed a construction of a class of examples of an algebraic structure with properties very close to the Hopf algebroids $H$ over a noncommutative base $A$ of other authors. His examples come along with a subalgebra $\mathcal{B}$ of $H\otimes H$, here called the balancing subalgebra, which contains the image of the coproduct and such that the intersection of $\mathcal{B}$ with the kernel of the projection $H\otimes H\to H\otimes_A H$ is a two-sided ideal in $\mathcal{B}$ which is moreover well behaved with respect to the antipode. We propose a set of abstract axioms cov…
To a finite Hopf-Galois extension $A | B$ we associate dual bialgebroids $S := \End_BA_B$ and $T := (A ø_B A)^B$ over the centralizer $R$ using the depth two theory in math.RA/0108067. First we extend results on the equivalence of certain properties of Hopf-Galois extensions with corresponding properties of the coacting Hopf algebra \cite{KT,Doi} to depth two extensions using coring theory math.RA/0002105. Next we show that $T^{\rm op}$ is a Hopf algebroid over the centralizer $R$ via Lu's theorem 5.1 in math.QA/9505024 for smash products with special modules over the Drinfel'd double, the Miy…
Like quantum groups, quantum groupoids frequently appear in pairs of mutually dual objects. We develop a general Pontrjagin duality theory for quantum groupoids in the algebraic setting that extends Van Daele's duality theory for multiplier Hopf algebras and overcomes the finiteness restrictions of the approach of Kadison, Szlachányi, Böhm and Schauenburg. Our construction is based on the integration theory for multiplier Hopf algebroids and yields, as a corollary, a duality theory for weak multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals. We compute the duals in several examples and introduce morphism…
In this work, the notion of partial representation of a Hopf algebra is introduced and its relationship with partial actions of Hopf algebras is explored. Given a Hopf algebra $H$, one can associate it to a Hopf algebroid $H_{par}$ which has the universal property that each partial representation of $H$ can be factorized by an algebra morphism from $H_{par}$. We define also the category of partial modules over a Hopf algebra $H$, which is the category of modules over its associated Hopf algebroid $H_{par}$. The Hopf algebroid structure of $H_{par}$ enables us to enhance the category of partial…
In this paper, we establish the invariance of cyclic (co)homology of left Hopf algebroids under the change of Morita equivalent base algebras. The classical result on Morita invariance for cyclic homology of associative algebras appears as a special example of this theory. In our main application we consider the Morita equivalence between the algebra of complex-valued smooth functions on the classical 2-torus and the coordinate algebra of the noncommutative 2-torus with rational parameter. We then construct a Morita base change left Hopf algebroid over this noncommutative 2-torus and show that…
We define cyclic cohomology of corings over not necessarily commutative algebras. We observe that the key fact which allows us to define this complex is that enveloping algebra of an algebra is a para Hopf algebroid. This observation enables us to define Hopf cyclic cohomology of corings on which para Hopf algebroids act.
Lie-Rinehart algebras, also known as Lie algebroids, give rise to Hopf algebroids by a universal enveloping algebra construction, much as the universal enveloping algebra of an ordinary Lie algebra gives a Hopf algebra, of infinite dimension. In finite characteristic, the universal enveloping algebra of a restricted Lie algebra admits a quotient Hopf algebra which is finite-dimensional if the Lie algebra is. Rumynin has shown that suitably defined restricted Lie algebroids allow to define restricted universal enveloping algebras that are finitely generated projective if the Lie algebroid is. T…
For a noncommutative configuration space whose coordinate algebra is the universal enveloping algebra of a finite dimensional Lie algebra, it is known how to introduce an extension playing the role of the corresponding noncommutative phase space, namely by adding the commuting deformed derivatives in a consistent and nontrivial way, therefore obtaining certain deformed Heisenberg algebra. This algebra has been studied in physical contexts, mainly in the case of the kappa-Minkowski space-time. Here we equip the entire phase space algebra with a coproduct, so that it becomes an instance of a com…
We propose a new realization of the elliptic quantum group equipped with the H-Hopf algebroid structure on the basis of the elliptic algebra U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_2). The algebra U_{q,p}(\hat{sl}_2) has a constructive definition in terms of the Drinfeld generators of the quantum affine algebra U_q(\hat{sl}_2) and a Heisenberg algebra. This yields a systematic construction of both finite and infinite-dimensional dynamical representations and their parallel structures to U_q(\hat{sl}_2). In particular we give a classification theorem of the finite-dimensional irreducible pseudo-highest weight represe…
We give a detailed comparison between the notion of a weak Hopf algebra (also called a quantum groupoid by Nikshych and Vainerman), and that of a $\times_R$-bialgebra due to Takeuchi (and also called a bialgebroid or quantum (semi)groupoid by Lu and Xu). A weak bialgebra is the same thing as a $\times_R$-bialgebra in which $R$ is Frobenius-separable. We extend the comparison to cover module and comodule theory, duality, and the question when a bialgebroid should be called a Hopf algebroid.
