Any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra has a left and a right integral. Conversely, Larsen and Sweedler showed that, if a finite-dimensional algebra with identity and a comultiplication with counit has a faithful left integral, it has to be a Hopf algebra.
In this paper, we generalize this result to possibly infinite-dimensional algebras, with or without identity. We have to leave the setting of Hopf algebras and work with multiplier Hopf algebras. Moreover, whereas in the finite-dimensional case, there is a complete symmetry between the bialgebra and its dual, this is no longer the case in infinite dimensions. Therefore we consider a direct version (with integrals) and a dual version (with cointegrals) of the Larson-Sweedler theorem.
We also add some results about the antipode. Furthermore, in the process of this paper, we obtain a new approach to multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals.
We extend the Larson-Sweedler theorem to weak Hopf algebras by proving that a finite dimensional weak bialgebra is a weak Hopf algebra iff it possesses a non-degenerate left integral. We show that the category of modules over a weak Hopf algebra is autonomous monoidal with semisimple unit and invertible modules. We also reveal the connection of invertible modules to left and right grouplike elements in the dual weak Hopf algebra. Defining distinguished left and right grouplike elements we derive the Radford formula for the fourth power of the antipode in a weak Hopf algebra and prove that the …
We find a relation between two Hopf algebras built on rooted trees. The first is the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra H_R which describes a certain type of renormalization in quantum field theory; the second is the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra A introduced ten years ago by some "differential" and combinatorial reasons. Roughly, the relation is the following: there exists a duality between these two Hopf algebras. We study then two natural operators on A, inspired by similar ones introduced by Connes and Kreimer for H_R.
In this paper we continue the study started recently in \cite{ABMbp} by describing and classifying all Hopf algebras $E$ that factorize through two Sweedler's Hopf algebras. Equivalently, we classify all bicrossed products $H_4 \bowtie H_4$. There are three steps in our approach. First, we explicitly describe the set of all matched pairs $(H_4, H_4, \triangleright, \triangleleft)$ by proving that, with the exception of the trivial pair, this set is parameterized by the ground field $k$. Then, for any $λ\in k$, we describe by generators and relations the associated bicrossed product, \mathcal{H…
We generalize the fundamental structure Theorem on Hopf (bi)-modules by Larson and Sweedler to quasi-Hopf algebras H. If H is finite dimensional this proves the existence and uniqueness (up to scalar multiples) of integrals in H. Among other applications we prove a Maschke type Theorem for diagonal crossed products as constructed by the authors.
In this paper, we construct explicitly a noncommutative symmetric (${\mathcal N}$CS) system over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of labeled rooted trees. By the universal property of the ${\mathcal N}$CS system formed by the generating functions of certain noncommutative symmetric functions, we obtain a specialization of noncommutative symmetric functions by labeled rooted trees. Taking the graded duals, we also get a graded Hopf algebra homomorphism from the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of labeled rooted forests to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. A connection of the coefficient…
For a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $A$ with a nonzero left integral $Λ$, we investigate a relationship between $P_n(Λ)$ and $P_n^J(Λ)$, where $P_n$ and $P_n^J$ are respectively the $n$-th Sweedler power maps of $A$ and the twisted Hopf algebra $A^J$. We use this relation to give several invariants of the representation category Rep$(A)$ considered as a tensor category. As applications, we distinguish the representation categories of 12-dimensional pointed nonsemisimple Hopf algebras. Also, these invariants are sufficient to distinguish the representation categories Rep$(K_8)$, Rep$(\kk Q_8)…
We investigate the weak Hopf algebras of Li based on $U_q[sl_n]$ and Sweedler's finite dimensional example. We give weak Hopf algebra isomorphisms between the weak generalisations of $U_q[sl_n]$ which are ``upgraded'' automorphisms of $U_q[sl_n]$ and hence give a classification of these structures as weak Hopf algebras. We also show how to decompose these examples into a direct sum which leads to unexpected isomorphisms between their algebraic structure.
In the paper we introduce the notion of twisted derivation of a bialgebra. Twisted derivations appear as infinitesimal symmetries of the category of representations. More precisely they are infinitesimal versions of twisted automorphisms of bialgebras. Twisted derivations naturally form a Lie algebra (the tangent algebra of the group of twisted automorphisms). Moreover this Lie algebra fits into a crossed module (tangent to the crossed module of twisted automorphisms). Here we calculate this crossed module for universal enveloping algebras and for the Sweedler's Hopf algebra.
Integrals in Hopf algebras are an essential tool in studying finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their action on algebras. Over fields it has been shown by Sweedler that the existence of integrals in a Hopf algebra is equivalent to the Hopf algebra being finite dimensional. In this paper we examine how much of this is true for Hopf algebras over rings. We show that over any commutative ring R that is not a field there exists a Hopf algebra H over R containing a non-zero integral but not being finitely generated as R-module. On the contrary we show that Sweedler's equivalence is still valid fo…
In this paper we present the Sweedler cohomology for a cocommutative weak Hopf algebra H. We show that the second cohomology group classifies completely the weak crossed products, having a common preunit, of H with a commutative left H-module algebra A.
We translate some fundamental properties satisfied by topological principal bundles into the setting of Hopf-Galois extensions. The properties are: functoriality, homotopy, and triviality. The main new concept of the paper is the homotopy equivalence of Hopf-Galois extensions. We work in the particular case where the subalgebra of coinvariants is central but without any restriction on the Hopf algebras coacting on the quantum principal bundle. We examine in detail the case when the Hopf algebra is one of Sweedler or Taft's finite-dimensional Hopf algebras.
In [1] a new notion of Hopf algebroid has been introduced. It was shown to be inequivalent to the structure introduced under the same name in [17]. We review this new notion of Hopf algebroid. We prove that two Hopf algebroids are isomorphic as bialgebroids if and only if their antipodes are related by a `twist' i.e. are deformed by the analogue of a character. A precise relation to weak Hopf algebras is given. After the review of the integral theory of Hopf algebroids we show how a right bialgebroid can be made a Hopf algebroid in the presence of a non-degenerate left integral. This can be in…
We prove that both, the embedding of the category of Hopf algebras into that of bialgebras and the forgetful functor from the category of Hopf algebras to the category of algebras, have right adjoints; in other words: every bialgebra has a Hopf coreflection and on every algebra there exists a cofree Hopf algebra. In this way we give an affirmative answer to a forty years old problem posed by Sweedler. On the route the coequalizers and the coproducts in the category of Hopf algebras are explicitly described.
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\bQ$-algebra and $W$ any non-empty subset of $\bN^+$. Let $z=(z_1, ..., z_n)$ be commutative or noncommutative free variables and $t$ a formal central parameter. % Denote uniformly by $\kzz$ and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebras % of $z$ over $K$ and $K[[t]]$, respectively. Let $\cDazz$ $(α\geq 1)$ be the unital algebra generated by the differential operators of $\kzz$ which increase the degree in $z$ by at least $α-1$ and $ \ataz $ the group of automorphisms $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $o(H_t(z))\geq α$ and $H_{t=0}(z)=0$. First, we study a co…
To any Hopf algebra H we associate two commutative Hopf algebras, which we call the first and second lazy homology Hopf algebras of H. These algebras are related to the lazy cohomology groups based on the so-called lazy cocycles of H by universal coefficient theorems. When H is a group algebra, then its lazy homology can be expressed in terms of the 1- and 2-homology of the group. When H is a cosemisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, then its first lazy homology is the Hopf algebra of the universal abelian grading group of the category of corepresenta…
We begin by considering the graded vector space with a basis consisting of rooted trees, graded by the count of non-root vertices. We define two linear operators on this vector space, the growth and pruning operators, which respectively raise and lower grading; their commutator is the operator that multiplies a rooted tree by its number of vertices. We define an inner product with respect to which the growth and pruning operators are adjoint, and obtain several results about the multiplicities associated with each operator. The symmetric algebra on the vector space of rooted trees (after a deg…
Consider the coradical filtrations of the Hopf algebras of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco and of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer. We give explicit isomorphisms showing that the associated graded Hopf algebras are dual to the cocommutative Hopf algebras introduced in the late 1980's by Grossman and Larson. These Hopf algebras are constructed from ordered trees and heap-ordered trees, respectively. These results follow from the fact that whenever one starts from a Hopf algebra that is a cofree graded coalgebra, the associated graded Hopf algebra is a shuffle Hopf algebra.
We give an analogue of the classical exponential map on Lie groups for Hopf $*$-algebras with differential calculus. The major difference with the classical case is the interpretation of the value of the exponential map, classically an element of the Lie group. We give interpretations as states on the Hopf algebra, elements of a Hilbert $C^{*} $-bimodule of $\frac{1}{2}$ densities and elements of the dual Hopf algebra. We give examples for complex valued functions on the groups $S_{3}$ and $\mathbb{Z}$, Woronowicz's matrix quantum group $\mathbb{C}_{q}[SU_2] $ and the Sweedler-Taft algebra.
We classify Hopf actions of Taft algebras T(n) on path algebras of quivers, in the setting where the quiver is loopless, finite, and Schurian. As a corollary, we see that every quiver admitting a faithful Z_n-action (by directed graph automorphisms) also admits inner faithful actions of a Taft algebra. Several examples for actions of the Sweedler algebra T(2) and for actions of T(3) are presented in detail. We then extend the results on Taft algebra actions on path algebras to actions of the Frobenius-Lusztig kernel u_q(sl_2), and to actions of the Drinfeld double of T(n).
In this work, the cohomology theory for partial actions of co-commutative Hopf algebras over commutative algebras is formulated. This theory generalizes the cohomology theory for Hopf algebras introduced by Sweedler and the cohomology theory for partial group actions, introduced by Dokuchaev and Khrypchenko. Some nontrivial examples, not coming from groups are constructed. Given a partial action of a co-commutative Hopf algebra $H$ over a commutative algebra $A$, we prove that there exists a new Hopf algebra $\widetilde{A}$, over a commutative ring $E(A)$, upon which $H$ still acts partially a…
Davydov-Yetter cohomology classifies infinitesimal deformations of tensor categories and of tensor functors. Our first result is that Davydov-Yetter cohomology for finite tensor categories is equivalent to the cohomology of a comonad arising from the central Hopf monad. This has several applications: First, we obtain a short and conceptual proof of Ocneanu rigidity. Second, it allows to use standard methods from comonad cohomology theory to compute Davydov-Yetter cohomology for a family of non-semisimple finite-dimensional Hopf algebras generalizing Sweedler's four dimensional Hopf algebra.
For a given Hopf algebra $A$ we classify all Hopf algebras $E$ that are coalgebra split extensions of $A$ by $H_4$, where $H_4$ is the Sweedler's 4-dimensional Hopf algebra. Equivalently, we classify all crossed products of Hopf algebras $A # H_4$ by computing explicitly two classifying objects: the cohomological 'group' ${\mathcal H}^{2} (H_4, A)$ and $\textsc{C}\textsc{r}\textsc{p} (H_4, A) :=$ the set of types of isomorphisms of all crossed products $A # H_4$. All crossed products $A #H_4$ are described by generators and relations and classified: they are parameterized by the set ${\mathcal…
We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. A trace formula of Larson and Radford is extended to a relation between the global and Frobenius-Perron dimensions of A. Finally, an analogue of the Class Equation of Kac and Zh…
Let $q$ be an $n^{th}$ root of unity for $n > 2$ and let $T_n(q)$ be the Taft (Hopf) algebra of dimension $n^2$. In 2001, Susan Montgomery and Hans-Jürgen Schneider classified all non-trivial $T_n(q)$-module algebra structures on an $n$-dimensional associative algebra $A$. They further showed that each such module structure extends uniquely to make $A$ a module algebra over the Drinfel'd double of $T_n(q)$. We explore what it is about the Taft algebras that leads to this uniqueness, by examining actions of (the Drinfel'd double of) Hopf algebras $H$ "close" to the Taft algebras on finite-dimen…
We define Hopf monads on an arbitrary monoidal category, extending the definition given previously for monoidal categories with duals. A Hopf monad is a bimonad (or opmonoidal monad) whose fusion operators are invertible. This definition can be formulated in terms of Hopf adjunctions, which are comonoidal adjunctions with an invertibility condition. On a monoidal category with internal Homs, a Hopf monad is a bimonad admitting a left and a right antipode. Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to the non-braided setting. They also generalize Hopf algebroids (which are linear Hopf monads on a cat…
Recent work on perturbative quantum field theory has led to much study of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. Its (graded) dual, the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of rooted trees, had already been studied by algebraists. L. Foissy introduced a noncommutative version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra, which turns out to be self-dual. Using some homomorphisms defined by the author and W. Zhao, we describe a commutative diagram that relates the aforementioned Hopf algebras to each other and to the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasi-symmetric functions…
In this paper, we obtain a canonical central element $ν_H$ for each semi-simple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ over any field $k$ and prove that $ν_H$ is invariant under gauge transformations. We show that if $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero then for any irreducible representation of $H$ which affords the character $χ$, $χ(ν_H)$ takes only the values 0, 1 or -1, moreover if $H$ is a Hopf algebra or a twisted quantum double of a finite group then $χ(ν_H)$ is the corresponding Frobenius-Schur Indicator. We also prove an analog of a Theorem of Larson-Radford for split semi-simple quasi-…
We prove an analog of Deligne's theorem for finite symmetric tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ with the Chevalley property over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $2$. Namely, we prove that every such category $\mathcal{C}$ admits a symmetric fiber functor to the symmetric tensor category $\mathcal{D}$ of representations of the triangular Hopf algebra $(k[\dd]/(\dd^2),1\ot 1 + \dd\ot \dd)$. Equivalently, we prove that there exists a unique finite group scheme $G$ in $\mathcal{D}$ such that $\mathcal{C}$ is symmetric tensor equivalent to $\Rep_{\mathcal{D}}(G)$. Finally, we compu…
Using the computational approach introduced in [Agore A.L., Bontea C.G., Militaru G., J. Algebra Appl. 12 (2013), 1250227, 24 pages, arXiv:1207.0411] we classify all coalgebra split extensions of $H_4$ by $k[C_n]$, where $C_n$ is the cyclic group of order $n$ and $H_4$ is Sweedler's $4$-dimensional Hopf algebra. Equivalently, we classify all crossed products of Hopf algebras $H_4 \# k[C_{n}]$ by explicitly computing two classifying objects: the cohomological 'group' ${\mathcal H}^{2} ( k[C_{n}], H_4)$ and $\text{CRP}( k[C_{n}], H_4):=$ the set of types of isomorphisms of all crossed products $…
A deeper understanding of recent computations of the Brauer group of Hopf algebras is attained by explaining why a direct product decomposition for this group holds and describing the non-interpreted factor occurring in it. For a Hopf algebra $B$ in a braided monoidal category $\C$, and under certain assumptions on the braiding (fulfilled if $\C$ is symmetric), we construct a sequence for the Brauer group $\BM(\C;B)$ of $B$-module algebras, generalizing Beattie's one. It allows one to prove that $\BM(\C;B) \cong \Br(\C) \times \Gal(\C;B),$ where $\Br(\C)$ is the Brauer group of $\C$ and $\Gal(…

We prove that every finite symmetric integral tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ with the Chevalley property over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>2$ admits a symmetric fiber functor to $\text{sVec}$. This proves Ostrik's conjecture \cite[Conjecture 1.3]{o} in this case. Equivalently, we prove that there exists a unique finite supergroup scheme $\mathcal{G}$ over $k$ and a grouplike element $ε\in k[\mathcal{G}]$ of order $\le 2$, whose action by conjugation on $\mathcal{G}$ coincides with the parity automorphism of $\mathcal{G}$, such that $\mathcal{C}$ is symmetric tensor equ…
To any cleft Hopf Galois object, i.e., any algebra H[t] obtained from a Hopf algebra H by twisting its multiplication with a two-cocycle t, we attach two "universal algebras" A(H,t) and U(H,t). The algebra A(H,t) is obtained by twisting the multiplication of H with the most general two-cocycle u formally cohomologous to t. The cocycle u takes values in the field of rational functions on H. By construction, A(H,t) is a cleft H-Galois extension of a "big" commutative algebra B(H,t). Any "form" of H[t] can be obtained from A(H,t) by a specialization of B(H,t) and vice versa. If the algebra H[t] i…
