We prove that in positive characteristic a module with good filtration for a group of type E6 restricts to a module with good filtration for a subgroup of type F4. (Recall that a filtration of a module for a semisimple algebraic group is called good if its layers are dual Weyl modules.) Our result confirms a conjecture of Brundan for one more case. The method relies on the canonical Frobenius splittings of Mathieu. Next we settle the remaining cases, in characteristic not 2, with a computer-aided variation on the old method of Donkin.
Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p>0$. We establish an isomorphism of $G$-modules between a direct sum of modules $\text{St} \otimes \text{St}$ and a direct sum of tensor products of simple modules of restricted highest weight with tilting modules that are projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$. This isomorphism holds precisely when Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture does, and thus can be seen as providing a $G$-module theoretic characterization of this conjecture.
In this paper the authors provide a complete answer to Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture for all rank $2$ semisimple algebraic groups and $\text{SL}_{4}(k)$ where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In the process, new techniques are introduced involving the existence of $(p,r)$-filtrations, Lusztig's character formula, and the $G_{r}$T-radical series for baby Verma modules.
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over a field of characteristic $p > 0$. We prove that the dual Weyl modules for $G$ all have $p$-filtrations when $p$ is not too small. Moreover, we give applications of this theorem to $p^n$-filtrations for $n > 1$, to modules containing the Steinberg module as a tensor factor, and to the Donkin conjecture on modules having $p$-filtrations.
In this article the quantized matrix algebras as in the title have been studied at a root of unity. A full classification of simple modules over such quantized matrix algebras of rank $2$ along with a class of finite dimensional indecomposable modules are given.
In this paper we investigate Donkin's $(p,r)$-Filtration Conjecture, and present two proofs of the "if" direction of the statement when $p\geq 2h-2$. One proof involves the investigation of when the tensor product between the Steinberg module and a simple module has a good filtration. One of our main results shows that this holds under suitable requirements on the highest weight of the simple module. The second proof involves recasting Donkin's Conjecture in terms of the identifications of projective indecomposable $G_{r}$-modules with certain tilting $G$-modules, and establishing necessary co…
Let $G$ be a simple, simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p>0$. Recent work of Kildetoft and Nakano and of Sobaje has shown close connections between two long-standing conjectures of Donkin: one on tilting modules and the lifting of projective modules for Frobenius kernels of $G$ and another on the existence of certain filtrations of $G$-modules. A key question related to these conjectures is whether the tensor product of the $r$th Steinberg module with a simple module with $p^{r}$th restricted highest weight admits a good filtration. In …
We study the decomposition of tensor products between a Steinberg module and a costandard module, both as a module for the algebraic group $G$ and when restricted to either a Frobenius kernel $G_r$ or a finite Chevalley group $G(\mathbb{F}_q)$. In all three cases, we give formulas reducing this to standard character data for $G$. Along the way, we define a bilinear form on the characters of finite dimensional $G$-modules and use this to give formulas for the dimension of homomorphism spaces between certain $G$-modules when restricted to either $G_r$ or $G(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Further, this form all…
For a reductive group G defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, we show that the Frobenius contraction functor of G-modules is right adjoint to the Frobenius twist of the modules tensored with the Steinberg module twice. It follows that the Frobenius contraction functor preserves injectivity, good filtrations, but not semisiplicity.
Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraic closure of a finite field Fq. In this paper it is proved that the infinite dimensional Steinberg module of kG defined by N. Xi in 2014 is irreducible when k is a field of positive characteristic and char k is not char Fq. For certain special linear groups, we show that the Steinberg modules of the groups are not quasi-finite with respect to some natural quasi-finite sequences of the groups.
James' submodule theorem is a fundamental result in the representation theory of the symmetric groups and the finite general linear groups. In this note we consider a version of that theorem for a general finite group with a split $BN$-pair. This gives rise to a distinguished composition factor of the Steinberg module, first described by Hiss via a somewhat different method. It is a major open problem to determine the dimension of this composition factor.
Let $G$ be a simple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, with $r$-th Frobenius kernel $G_r$. Let $M$ be a $G_r$-module and $V$ a rational $G$-module. We put a variety structure on the set of all $G_r$-summands of $V$ that are isomorphic to $M$, and study basic properties of these varieties. We give a few applications of this work to the representation theory of $G$, primarily in providing some sufficient conditions for when a $G_r$-module decomposition of $V$ can be extended to a $G$-module decomposition. In particular we are interested…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic. If $M$ is a finite dimensional $G$-module that is projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$, then its character is divisible by the character of the Steinberg module. In this paper we study such quotients, showing that if $M$ is an indecomposable tilting module, then the multiplicities of the orbit sums appearing in its "Steinberg quotient" are well behaved.
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a field of prime characteristic. An indecomposable tilting module for $G$ whose highest weight lies above the Steinberg weight has a character that is divisible by the Steinberg character. The resulting "Steinberg quotient" carries important information about $G$-modules, and in previous work we studied patterns in the weight multiplicities of these characters. In this paper we broaden our scope to include quantum Steinberg quotients, and show how the multiplicities in these characters relate to algebraic Steinberg quotients, Weyl characters, and evaluations o…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field of positive characteristic and denote by C(G) the category of rational G-modules. In this note we investigate the subcategory of C(G) consisting of those modules whose composition factors all have highest weights linked to the Steinberg weight. This subcategory is denoted ST and called the Steinberg component. We give an explicit equivalence between ST and C(G) and we derive some consequences. In particular, our result allows us to relate the Frobenius contracting functor to the projection functor from C(G) onto ST .
We determine the graded composition multiplicity in the symmetric algebra S(V) of the natural GL_n(q)-module V, or equivalently in the coinvariant algebra of V, for a large class of irreducible modules around the Steinberg module. This was built on a computation, via connections to algebraic groups, of the Steinberg module multiplicity in a tensor product of S(V) with other tensor spaces of fundamental weight modules.
The aim of this paper is to give generalizationof the constructionof the Steinberg tempered character on a connected reductive p-adic group. We prove that this character is invariant by the weak restriction of the Jacquet module by analogy to finite reductive groups.
We show that in characteristic 2, the Steinberg representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,q), q a power of an odd prime p, has two irreducible constituents lying just above the socle that are isomorphic to the two Weil modules of degree (q^n-1)/2.
Recently Donkin defined signed Young modules as a simultaneous generalization of Young and twisted Young modules for the symmetric group. We show that in odd characteristic, if a Specht module $S^λ$ is irreducible, then $S^λ$ is a signed Young module. Thus the set of irreducible Specht modules coincides with the set of irreducible signed Young modules. This provides evidence for our conjecture that the signed Young modules are precisely the class of indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations. The theorem is false in characteristic two.
We study Demazure modules which occur in a level $\ell$ irreducible integrable representation of an affine Lie algebra. We also assume that they are stable under the action of the standard maximal parabolic subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra. We prove that such a module is isomorphic to the fusion product of "prime" \ Demazure modules, where the prime factors are indexed by dominant integral weights which are either a multiple of $\ell$ or take value less than $\ell$ on all simple coroots. Our proof depends on a technical result which we prove in all the classical cases and $G_2$. Calculatio…
In this paper the authors produce a projective indecomposable module for the Frobenius kernel of a simple algebraic group in characteristic $p$ that is not the restriction of an indecomposable tilting module. This yields a counterexample to Donkin's longstanding Tilting Module Conjecture. The authors also produce a Weyl module that does not admit a $p$-Weyl filtration. This answers an old question of Jantzen, and also provides a counterexample to the $(p,r)$-Filtration Conjecture.
Given a quasi-hereditary superalgebra $A$, the first author and R. Muth have defined generalized Schur bi-superalgebras $T^A(n)$ and proved that these algebras are again quasi-hereditary. In particular, $T^A(n)$ comes with a family of standard modules. Developing the work of Donkin and Mathieu on good filtrations, we prove that tensor product of standard modules over $T^A(n)$ has a standard filtration.
We determine the invariants, with arbitrary determinant twists, of the parabolic subgroups of the finite general linear group GL_n(q) acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of the natural GL_n(q)-module V. In addition, we obtain the graded multiplicity of the Steinberg module of GL_n(q) in the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of V, twisted by an arbitrary determinant power.
We provide a Lagrangian construction for the fixed-point subalgebra, together with its idempotent form, in a quasi-split symmetric pair of type $A_{n-1}$. This is obtained inside the limit of a projective system of Borel-Moore homologies of the Steinberg varieties of $n$-step isotropic flag varieties. Arising from the construction are a basis of homological origin for the idempotent form and a geometric realization of rational modules.
We describe an algorithm, which - given the characters of tilting modules and assuming that Donkin's tilting conjecture is true - computes the characters of simple modules for an algebraic group in any characteristic.
The paper contains results that characterize the Donkin-Koppinen filtration of the coordinate superalgebra $K[G]$ of the general linear supergroup $G=GL(m|n)$ by its subsupermodules $C_Γ=O_Γ(K[G])$. Here, the supermodule $C_Γ$ is the largest subsupermodule of $K[G]$ whose composition factors are irreducible supermodules of highest weight $λ$, where $λ$ belongs to a finitely-generated ideal $Γ$ of the poset $X(T)^+$ of dominant weights of $G$. A decomposition of $G$ as a product of subsuperschemes $U^-\times G_{ev}\times U^+$ induces a superalgebra isomorphism $ϕ^* : K[U^-]\otimes K[G_{ev}]\oti…
This is not standard in the sense that we understand a Springer map to be a collapsing of homogeneous bundles. Apart from that we use mostly techniques from Chriss and Ginzbergs book but we work in the equivariant derived category of Bernstein and Lunts. We define Steinberg algebras as (equivariant) Borel-Moore homology algebras of the associated Steinberg varieties. The data of the BBD-decomposition theorem applied to the Springer map give a parametrization of projective graded and simple graded modules over the Steinberg algebra. Also, the projective graded modules are equivalent to a catego…
The purpose of this paper is to prove necessary and sufficient criteria for a $GL(m|n)$-supermodule to have a good or Weryl filtration. We also introduce the notion of a Steinberg supermodule analogous to the classical notion of Steinberg module. We prove that the Steinberg supermodule inherits some properties of the Steinberg module. Some new series of finite-dimensional tilting supermodules are found.
Let $G$ be a simple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, with Frobenius kernel $G_{(1)}$. It is known that when $p\ge 2h-2$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $G$, the projective indecomposable $G_{(1)}$-modules (PIMs) lift to $G$, and this has been conjectured to hold in all characteristics. In this paper, we explore the lifting problem via extensions of algebraic groups, following the work of Parshall and Scott who in turn build upon ideas due to Donkin. We prove various results which augment this approach, and as an application demo…
We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an…
Let G be a semisimple, simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We observe that the tensor product of the Steinberg module with a minuscule module is always indecomposable tilting. Although quite easy to prove, this fact does not seem to have been observed before. It has the following consequence: If p >= 2h-2 and a given tilting module has highest weight p-adically close to the r-th Steinberg weight, then the tilting module is isomorphic to a tensor product of two simple modules, usually in many ways.
Let $G$ be a finite group and, for a prime $p$, let $S$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. A character $χ$ of $G$ is called $\Syl_p$-regular if the restriction of $χ$ to $S$ is the character of the regular representation of $S$. If, in addition, $χ$ vanishes at all elements of order divisible by $p$, $χ$ is said to be Steinberg-like. For every finite simple group $G$ we determine all primes $p$ for which $G$ admits a Steinberg-like character, except for alternating groups in characteristic~2. Moreover, we determine all primes for which $G$ has a projective $FG$-module of dimension $|S|$, where $F…
For an arbitrary infinite field k of characteristic p > 0, we describe the structure of a block of the algebraic monoid M_n(k) (all n x n matrices over k), or, equivalently, a block of the Schur algebra S(n,p), whose simple modules are indexed by p-hook partitions. The result is known; we give an elementary and self-contained proof, based only on a result of Peel and Donkin's description of the blocks of Schur algebras. The result leads to a character formula for certain simple GL_n(k)-modules, valid for all n and all p. This character formula is a special case of one found by Brundan, Kleshch…
We prove a representation stability result for the codimension-one cohomology of the level three congruence subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a special case of a question of Church-Farb-Putman which we make more precise. Our methods involve proving several finiteness properties of the Steinberg module for the group $\mathbf{SL}_n(K)$ for $K$ a field. This also lets us give a new proof of Ash-Putman-Sam's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module. We also prove an integral refinement of Church-Putman's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module for the gr…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$, possibly zero, and $G=q$-$\GL_3(k)$, the quantum group of three by three matrices as defined by Dipper and Donkin. We may also take $G$ to be $\GL_3(k)$. We first determine the extensions between simple $G$-modules for both $G$ and $G_1$, the first Frobneius kernel of $G$. We then determine the submodule structure of certain induced modules, $\hat{Z}(λ)$, for the infinitesimal group $G_1B$. We induce this structure to $G$ to obtain a good $l$-filtration of certain induced modules, $\nabla(λ)$, for $G$. We also determine the homomo…
Let G be a connected and reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. An interesting class of representations of G consists of those G-modules having a good filtration -- i.e. a filtration whose layers are the standard highest weight modules obtained as the space of global sections of G-linearized line bundles on the flag variety of G. Let H be a connected and reductive subgroup of G. One says that (G,H) is a Donkin pair, or that H is a good filtration subgroup of G, if every G-module with good filtration also has a good filtration as an H-module. In th…
A well-known theorem of Burnside says that if $ρ$ is a faithful representation of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $0$, then every irreducible representation of $G$ appears as a constituent of a tensor power of $ρ$. In 1962, R. Steinberg gave a module theoretic proof that simultaneously removed the constraint on the characteristic, and allowed the group to be replaced by a monoid. Brauer subsequently simplified Burnside's proof and, moreover, showed that if the character of $ρ$ takes on $r$ distinct values, then the first $r$ tensor powers of $ρ$ already contain amongst them a…
For the general linear group $GL_n(k)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, there are two types of "twisting" operations that arise naturally on partitions. These are of the form $λ\rightarrow pλ$ and $λ\rightarrow λ+ p^rτ$ The first comes from the Frobenius twist, and the second arises in various tensor product situations, often from tensoring with the Steinberg module. This paper surveys and adds to an intriguing series of seemingly unrelated symmetric group results where this partition combinatorics arises, but with no structural explanation for it. This includes co…
The representation theory of the symmetric group has been intensively studied for over 100 years and is one of the gems of modern mathematics. The full transformation monoid $\mathfrak T_n$ (the monoid of all self-maps of an $n$-element set) is the monoid analogue of the symmetric group. The investigation of its representation theory was begun by Hewitt and Zuckerman in 1957. Its character table was computed by Putcha in 1996 and its representation type was determined in a series of papers by Ponizovski{\uı}, Putcha and Ringel between 1987 and 2000. From their work, one can deduce that the glo…
Tits has defined Steinberg groups and Kac-Moody groups for any root system and any commutative ring R. We establish a Curtis-Tits-style presentation for the Steinberg group St of any rank > 2 irreducible affine root system, for any R. Namely, St is the direct limit of the Steinberg groups coming from the 1- and 2-node subdiagrams of the Dynkin diagram. This leads to a completely explicit presentation. Using this we show that St is finitely presented if the rank is > 3 and R is finitely generated as a ring, or if the rank is 3 and R is finitely generated as a module over a subring generated by …
We study the reduced Lefschetz module of the complex of p-radical and p-centric subgroups. We assume that the underlying group G has parabolic characteristic p and the centralizer of a certain noncentral p-element has a component with central quotient H a finite group of Lie type in characteristic p. A non-projective indecomposable summand of the associated Lefschetz module lies in a non-principal block of G and it is a Green correspondent of an inflated, extended Steinberg module for a Lie subgroup of H. The vertex of this summand is the defect group of the block in which it lies.
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. In this paper we study the BGG category $\mathcal O_q$ for the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak g)$ with $q$ being a root of unity in a field $K$ of characteristic $p >0$. We first consider the simple modules in $\mathcal O_q$ and prove a Steinberg tensor product theorem for them. This result reduces the problem of determining the corresponding irreducible characters to the same problem for a finite subset of finite dimensional simple modules. Then we investigate more closely the Verma modules in $\mathcal O_q$. Except for the special Verma module…
Let $V$ be an $r$-dimensional vector space over an infinite field $F$ of prime characteristic $p$, and let $L_n(V)$ denote the $n$-th homogeneous component of the free Lie algebra on $V$. We study the structure of $L_n(V)$ as a module for the general linear group $GL_r(F)$ when $n=pk$ and $k$ is not divisible by $p$ and where $n \geq r$. Our main result is an explicit 1-1 correspondence, multiplicity-preserving, between the indecomposable direct summands of $L_k(V)$ and the indecomposable direct summands of $L_n(V)$ which are not isomorphic to direct summands of $V^{\otimes n}$. The direct sum…
We prove the exactness of the reduction map from étale $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules over completed localized group rings of compact open subgroups of unipotent $p$-adic algebraic groups to usual étale $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules over Fontaine's ring. This reduction map is a component of a functor from smooth $p$-power torsion representations of $p$-adic reductive groups (or more generally of Borel subgroups of these) to $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules. Therefore this gives evidence for this functor---which is intended as some kind of $p$-adic Langlands correspondence for reductive groups---to be exact. We also show that the correspon…
