Let $V$ be an $r$-dimensional vector space over an infinite field $F$ of prime characteristic $p$, and let $L_n(V)$ denote the $n$-th homogeneous component of the free Lie algebra on $V$. We study the structure of $L_n(V)$ as a module for the general linear group $GL_r(F)$ when $n=pk$ and $k$ is not divisible by $p$ and where $n \geq r$. Our main result is an explicit 1-1 correspondence, multiplicity-preserving, between the indecomposable direct summands of $L_k(V)$ and the indecomposable direct summands of $L_n(V)$ which are not isomorphic to direct summands of $V^{\otimes n}$. The direct summands of $L_k(V)$ have been parametrised earlier, by Donkin and Erdmann. Bryant and Stöhr have considered the case $n=p$ but from a different perspective. Our approach uses idempotents of the Solomon descent algebras, and in addition a correspondence theorem for permutation modules of symmetric groups.
We study different problems related to the Solomon's descent algebra $Σ(W)$ of a finite Coxeter group $(W,S)$: positive elements, morphisms between descent algebras, Loewy length... One of the main result is that, if $W$ is irreducible and if the longest element is central, then the Loewy length of $Σ(W)$ is equal to $\lceil |S| / 2 \rceil$.
In this paper we extend the computations in parts I and II of this series of papers and complete the proof of a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the character of a finite Coxeter group W acting on the pth graded component of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as a sum of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of W for groups of rank seven and eight. For classical Coxeter groups, these characters are given using a formula that is expected to hold in all ranks.
The purpose of the present article is to define and study a new class of descent algebras, called twisted descent algebras. These algebras are associated to the Barratt-Joyal theory of twisted bialgebras in the same way than classical descent algebras are associated to classical bialgebras. The formal properties of twisted descent algebras seem particularly meaningful in view of applications to discrete probabilities, to the geometry of Coxeter groups and buildings, and to symmetric group combinatorics.
This paper introduces an analogue of the Solomon descent algebra for the complex reflection groups of type $G(r,1,n)$. As with the Solomon descent algebra, our algebra has a basis given by sums of `distinguished' coset representatives for certain `reflection subgroups'. We explicitly describe the structure constants with respect to this basis and show that they are polynomials in $r$. This allows us to define a deformation, or $q$-analogue, of these algebras which depends on a parameter $q$. We determine the irreducible representations of all of these algebras and give a basis for their radica…
We refine a conjecture by Lehrer and Solomon on the structure of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ and relate it to the descent algebra of $W$. As a result, we claim that both the group algebra of $W$, as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of element centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. We give a uniform proof of the claim for symmetric groups. In addition, we prove that a relative version of the conjecture holds for every pair $(W, W_L)$, where $W$ is arbitrary and $W_…
In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the character of a finite Coxeter group $W$ acting on the $p$th graded component of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as a sum of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture relates the character above to a component of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to Solomon's descent algebra of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups, as well as finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four. In this paper, the second in…
In a recent paper we claimed that both the group algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$, and gave a uniform proof of this claim for symmetric groups. In this note we outline an inductive approach to our conjecture. As an application of this method, we prove the inductive version of the conjecture for finite Coxeter groups of rank up to 2.
In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded de…
The descent algebra $Σ(W)$ is a subalgebra of the group algebra $\Q W$ of a finite Coxeter group $W$, which supports a homomorphism with nilpotent kernel and commutative image in the character ring of $W$. Thus $Σ(W)$ is a basic algebra, and as such it has a presentation as a quiver with relations. Here we construct $Σ(W)$ as a quotient of a subalgebra of the path algebra of the Hasse diagram of the Boolean lattice of all subsets of $S$, the set of simple reflections in $W$. From this construction we obtain some general information about the quiver of $Σ(W)$ and an algorithm for the constructi…
Let W be a finite Coxeter group. In this paper, we show that the properties of the Solomon algebra homomorphism Phi (from the Solomom descent algebra to the algebra of class functions) are strongly related to enumerative results: certain joint statistics on W may be enumerated by the scalar products of appropriate characters.
The article focuses on four aspects related to the descent algebras of type $A$. They are modular idempotents, higher Lie powers, higher Lie modules and the right ideals of the symmetric group algebras generated by the Solomon's descent elements. More precisely, we give a construction for the modular idempotents, describe the dimension and character for higher Lie powers and study the structures of the higher Lie modules and the right ideals both in the ordinary and modular cases.
Combinatorial identities on Weyl groups of types $A$ and $B$ are derived from special bases of the corresponding coinvariant algebras. Using the Garsia-Stanton descent basis of the coinvariant algebra of type $A$ we give a new construction of the Solomon descent representations. An extension of the descent basis to type $B$, using new multivariate statistics on the group, yields a refinement of the descent representations. These constructions are then applied to refine well-known decomposition rules of the coinvariant algebra and to generalize various identities.
Let $\mathscr{C}$ be a modular tensor category over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0. Then there is the ubiquitous notion of the S-matrix $S(\mathscr{C})$ associated with the modular category. The matrix $S(\mathscr{C})$ is a symmetric matrix, its entries are cyclotomic integers and the matrix $(\dim \mathscr{C})^{-\frac{1}{2}}\cdot S(\mathscr{C})$ is a unitary matrix. Here $\dim \mathscr{C}\in k$ denotes the categorical dimension of $\mathscr{C}$ and it is a totally positive cyclotomic integer. Now suppose that we also have a modular autoequivalence $F:\mathscr{C}\to \mat…
We develop the homology theory of the algebra of a regular semigroup, which is a particularly nice case of a quasi-hereditary algebra in good characteristic. Directedness is characterized for these algebras, generalizing the case of semisimple algebras studied by Munn and Ponizovksy. We then apply homological methods to compute (modulo group theory) the quiver of a right regular band of groups, generalizing Saliola's results for a right regular band. Right regular bands of groups come up in the representation theory of wreath products with symmetric groups in much the same way that right regul…
The descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group W is a subalgebra of the group algebra defined by Solomon. Descent algebras of symmetric groups have properties that are not shared by other Coxeter groups. For instance, the natural map from the descent algebra of a symmetric group to its character ring is a surjection with kernel equal the Jacobson radical. Thus, the descent algebra implicitly encodes information about the representations of the symmetric group, and a complete set of primitive idempotents in the character ring leads to a decomposition of the group algebra into a sum of right idea…
In this paper, we extend the notion of Shintani descent to general (possibly disconnected) algebraic groups defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. For this, it is essential to treat all the pure inner $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational forms of the algebraic group at the same time. We prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by T. Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for any neutrally unipotent algebraic group, i.e. an algebraic group whose neutral connected component is a unipotent group. We also prove that these almost characters coincide with the "trace of Frobenius" functi…
Let G be a group, F a field of prime characteristic p and V a finite-dimensional FG-module. Let L(V) denote the free Lie algebra on V regarded as an FG-submodule of the free associative algebra (or tensor algebra) T(V). For each positive integer r, let L^r(V) and T^r(V) be the rth homogeneous components of L(V) and T(V), respectively. Here L^r(V) is called the rth Lie power of V. Our main result is that there are submodules B_1, B_2, ... of L(V) such that, for all r, B_r is a direct summand of T^r(V) and, whenever m \geq 0 and k is not divisible by p, $$ L^{p^mk}(V) = L^{p^m}(B_k) \oplus L^{p^…
To a "stable homotopy theory" (a presentable, symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category), we naturally associate a category of finite étale algebra objects and, using Grothendieck's categorical machine, a profinite group that we call the Galois group. We then calculate the Galois groups in several examples. For instance, we show that the Galois group of the periodic $\mathbf{E}_\infty$-algebra of topological modular forms is trivial and that the Galois group of $K(n)$-local stable homotopy theory is an extended version of the Morava stabilizer group. We also describe the Galois group of the …
We introduce two new partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. Both posets are ranked by the major index statistic offset by a fixed shift. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. By a theorem of Lusztig--Stanley, this classification can be interpreted as determining which irreducible representations of the symmetric group exist in which homogeneous component…
