We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups.
As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper.
As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.
We show that in characteristic 2, the Steinberg representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,q), q a power of an odd prime p, has two irreducible constituents lying just above the socle that are isomorphic to the two Weil modules of degree (q^n-1)/2.
We determine the irreducible constituents of the Steinberg character of an orthogonal group over a finite field restricted to the orthogonal group of one less dimension
Let $G$ be a finite group and, for a prime $p$, let $S$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. A character $χ$ of $G$ is called $\Syl_p$-regular if the restriction of $χ$ to $S$ is the character of the regular representation of $S$. If, in addition, $χ$ vanishes at all elements of order divisible by $p$, $χ$ is said to be Steinberg-like. For every finite simple group $G$ we determine all primes $p$ for which $G$ admits a Steinberg-like character, except for alternating groups in characteristic~2. Moreover, we determine all primes for which $G$ has a projective $FG$-module of dimension $|S|$, where $F…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a field of prime characteristic. An indecomposable tilting module for $G$ whose highest weight lies above the Steinberg weight has a character that is divisible by the Steinberg character. The resulting "Steinberg quotient" carries important information about $G$-modules, and in previous work we studied patterns in the weight multiplicities of these characters. In this paper we broaden our scope to include quantum Steinberg quotients, and show how the multiplicities in these characters relate to algebraic Steinberg quotients, Weyl characters, and evaluations o…
We determine the character tables of Sylow $p$-subgroups $U$ of the Steinberg triality groups ${^3}D_4(q^3)$, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime $p$.
An irreducible character of a finite group $G$ is called quasi $p$-Steinberg character for a prime $p$ if it takes a nonzero value on every $p$-regular element of $G$. In this article, we classify the quasi $p$-Steinberg characters of Symmetric ($S_n$) and Alternating ($A_n$) groups and their double covers. In particular, an existence of a non-linear quasi $p$-Steinberg character of $S_n$ implies $n \leq 8$ and of $A_n$ implies $n \leq 9$.
The aim of this paper is to give generalizationof the constructionof the Steinberg tempered character on a connected reductive p-adic group. We prove that this character is invariant by the weak restriction of the Jacquet module by analogy to finite reductive groups.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ be a prime number dividing the order of $G$. An irreducible character $χ$ of $G$ is called a quasi $p$-Steinberg character if $χ(g)$ is nonzero for every $p$-regular element $g$ in $G$. In this paper, we classify quasi $p$-Steinberg characters of the complex reflection groups $G(r,q,n)$. In particular, we obtain this classification for Weyl groups of type $B_n$ and type $D_n$.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic. If $M$ is a finite dimensional $G$-module that is projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$, then its character is divisible by the character of the Steinberg module. In this paper we study such quotients, showing that if $M$ is an indecomposable tilting module, then the multiplicities of the orbit sums appearing in its "Steinberg quotient" are well behaved.
We study the decomposition of tensor products between a Steinberg module and a costandard module, both as a module for the algebraic group $G$ and when restricted to either a Frobenius kernel $G_r$ or a finite Chevalley group $G(\mathbb{F}_q)$. In all three cases, we give formulas reducing this to standard character data for $G$. Along the way, we define a bilinear form on the characters of finite dimensional $G$-modules and use this to give formulas for the dimension of homomorphism spaces between certain $G$-modules when restricted to either $G_r$ or $G(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Further, this form all…
A well-known theorem of Burnside says that if $ρ$ is a faithful representation of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $0$, then every irreducible representation of $G$ appears as a constituent of a tensor power of $ρ$. In 1962, R. Steinberg gave a module theoretic proof that simultaneously removed the constraint on the characteristic, and allowed the group to be replaced by a monoid. Brauer subsequently simplified Burnside's proof and, moreover, showed that if the character of $ρ$ takes on $r$ distinct values, then the first $r$ tensor powers of $ρ$ already contain amongst them a…
Let G be a semisimple almost simple algebraic group defined and split over a nonarchimedean local field K and let S be the Steinberg representation of G(K). Let t be be a very regular semisimple element of G(K). In this paper we give a simple formula (not as an alternating sum) for the value of the character of S at t; we show that this value is plus or minus an integer power of q, the cardinal of the residue field of K. We also give an explicit formula for the character at a split very regular element of any irreducible admissible representation of G(K) with nonzero vectors invariant under an…
Let $F$ be a non archimedean local field of characteristic not $2$. Let $D$ be a division algebra of dimension $d^2$ over its center $F$, and $E$ a quadratic extension of $F$. If $m$ is a positive integer, to a character $χ$ of $E^*$, one can attach the Steinberg representation $St(χ)$ of $G=GL(m,D\otimes_F E)$. Let $H$ be the group $GL(m,D)$, we prove that $St(χ)$ is $H$-distinguished if and only if $χ_{|F^*}$ is the quadratic character $η_{E/F}^{md-1}$, where $η_{E/F}$ is the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $E^*$. We also get multiplicity one for the space of invariant linear for…
We prove an isomorphism for simple perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a connected reductive algebraic group that is a geometric counterpart (in light of the Finkelberg-Mirković conjecture) of the Steinberg tensor product formula for simple representations of reductive groups over fields of positive characteristic.
For any root system and any commutative ring we give a relatively simple presentation of a group related to its Steinberg group St. This includes the case of infinite root systems used in Kac-Moody theory, for which the Steinberg group was defined by Tits and Morita-Rehmann. In most cases our group equals St, giving a presentation with many advantages over the usual presentation of St. This equality holds for all spherical root systems, all irreducible affine root systems of rank>2, and all 3-spherical root systems. When the coefficient ring satisfies a minor condition, the last condition can …
Let $G$ be a simple, simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p>0$. Recent work of Kildetoft and Nakano and of Sobaje has shown close connections between two long-standing conjectures of Donkin: one on tilting modules and the lifting of projective modules for Frobenius kernels of $G$ and another on the existence of certain filtrations of $G$-modules. A key question related to these conjectures is whether the tensor product of the $r$th Steinberg module with a simple module with $p^{r}$th restricted highest weight admits a good filtration. In …
For a reductive group G defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, we show that the Frobenius contraction functor of G-modules is right adjoint to the Frobenius twist of the modules tensored with the Steinberg module twice. It follows that the Frobenius contraction functor preserves injectivity, good filtrations, but not semisiplicity.
This is a preliminary version of the first chapter of a book project on the character theory of finite groups of Lie type. It provides the foundations from the general theory of reductive algebraic groups over a finite field.
In this paper we give a simple description of DT-invariants of double quivers without potential as the multiplicity of the Steinberg character in some representation associated with the quiver. When the dimension vector is indivisible we use this description to express these DT-invariants as the Poincaré polynomial of some singular quiver varieties. Finally we explain the connections with previous work of Hausel-Letellier-Villegas where DT-invariants are expressed as the graded multiplicities of the trivial representation of some Weyl group in the cohomology of some non-singular quiver varieti…
Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraic closure of a finite field Fq. In this paper it is proved that the infinite dimensional Steinberg module of kG defined by N. Xi in 2014 is irreducible when k is a field of positive characteristic and char k is not char Fq. For certain special linear groups, we show that the Steinberg modules of the groups are not quasi-finite with respect to some natural quasi-finite sequences of the groups.
We construct categories of Harish-Chandra bimodules for affine Lie algebras analogous to Harish-Chandra bimodules with infinitesimal characters for simple Lie algebras, addressing an old problem raised by I. Frenkel and Malikov. Under an integrality hypothesis, we establish monoidal equivalences between blocks of our affine Harish-Chandra bimodules and versions of the affine Hecke category. To do so, we introduce a new singular localization onto Whittaker flag manifolds. The argument for the latter specializes to a somewhat alternative treatment of regular localization, and identifies the cate…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field of positive characteristic and denote by C(G) the category of rational G-modules. In this note we investigate the subcategory of C(G) consisting of those modules whose composition factors all have highest weights linked to the Steinberg weight. This subcategory is denoted ST and called the Steinberg component. We give an explicit equivalence between ST and C(G) and we derive some consequences. In particular, our result allows us to relate the Frobenius contracting functor to the projection functor from C(G) onto ST .
Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p>0$. We establish an isomorphism of $G$-modules between a direct sum of modules $\text{St} \otimes \text{St}$ and a direct sum of tensor products of simple modules of restricted highest weight with tilting modules that are projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$. This isomorphism holds precisely when Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture does, and thus can be seen as providing a $G$-module theoretic characterization of this conjecture.
We prove that in positive characteristic a module with good filtration for a group of type E6 restricts to a module with good filtration for a subgroup of type F4. (Recall that a filtration of a module for a semisimple algebraic group is called good if its layers are dual Weyl modules.) Our result confirms a conjecture of Brundan for one more case. The method relies on the canonical Frobenius splittings of Mathieu. Next we settle the remaining cases, in characteristic not 2, with a computer-aided variation on the old method of Donkin.
Let G be a connected semisimple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic and let X denote an equivariant embedding of G. We define a distinguished Steinberg fiber N in G, called the zero-fiber, and prove that the closure of N within X is normal and Cohen-Macaulay. Furthermore, when X is smooth we prove that the closure of N is a local complete intersection.
In representation theory of finite groups an important role is played by irreducible characters of p-defect 0, for a prime p dividing the group order. These are exactly those vanishing at the p-singular elements. In this paper we generalize this notion investigating the irreducible characters that are constant at the p-singular elements. We determine all such characters of non-zero defect for alternating, symmetric and sporadic simple groups. We also classify the irreducible characters of quasi-simple groups of Lie type that are constant on the non-identity unipotent elements. In particular, w…
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type and $\St_k$ be the Steinberg representation of $G$, defined over a field $k$. We are interested in the case where $k$ has prime characteristic~$\ell$ and $\St_k$ is reducible. Tinberg has shown that the socle of $\St_k$ is always simple. We give a new proof of this result in terms of the Hecke algebra of $G$ with respect to a Borel subgroup and show how to identify the simple socle of $\St_k$ among the principal series representations of~$G$. Furthermore, we determine the composition length of $\St_k$ when $G=\GL_n(q)$ or $G$ is a finite classical group an…
Let G be a semisimple, simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We observe that the tensor product of the Steinberg module with a minuscule module is always indecomposable tilting. Although quite easy to prove, this fact does not seem to have been observed before. It has the following consequence: If p >= 2h-2 and a given tilting module has highest weight p-adically close to the r-th Steinberg weight, then the tilting module is isomorphic to a tensor product of two simple modules, usually in many ways.
Let $V$ be a finite abelian group of odd order, equipped with a non-degenerate, alternating form $ω\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We give closed formulas for the character values of the Weil representation associated with $(V,ω)$. These formulas generalize the ones given by S. Gurevich and R. Hadani (2007) and by T. Thomas (2008, 2013) from finite vector spaces to abelian groups. Our formulas do not involve the choice of a Lagrangian subgroup of $V$. Our proofs are based on an elementary algebraic approach introduced by H. N. Ward (1972, 2017) for finite vector spaces over field…
In this paper we obtain a decomposition formula of the uniform projection of the Weil character of a finite reductive dual pair consisting of a symplectic group and an even orthogonal group. This is the first and major step to give an explicit description of the Howe correspondence on unipotent characters confirming a conjecture by Aubert-Michel-Rouquier.
Let V be a symplectic vector space over a finite or local field. We compute the character of the Weil representation of the metaplectic group Mp(V). The final formulas are overtly free of choices (e.g. they do not involve the usual choice of a Lagrangian subspace of V). Along the way, in results similar to those of K. Maktouf, we relate the character to the Weil index of a certain quadratic form, which may be understood as a Maslov index. This relation also expresses the character as the pullback of a certain simple function from Mp(V\oplus V).
We prove a conjecture of Udo Riese about the minimal ring of definition for principal series Weil characters of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$, for $p$ an odd prime. More precisely, we show that the $(p+1)/2$-dimensional Weil characters can be realized over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\varepsilon p})$, where $\varepsilon =(-1)^{(p-1)/2}$, and we provide explicit integral models over these quadratic rings. We do so by studying the Galois action on the integral models of Weil characters recently discovered by Yilong Wang.
We develop a simple algebraic approach to the study of the Weil representation associated to a finite abelian group. As a result, we obtain a simple proof of a generalisation of a well-known formula for the absolute value of its character. We also obtain a new result about its decomposition into irreducible representations. As an example, the decomposition of the Weil representation of Sp_{2g}(Z/NZ) is described for odd N.
In this paper, we will point out a gap in the proof of a theorem of G.Hill (J. Algebra, 174 (1995), 610-635) and will give new arguments to give a remedy in the non-dyadic case modulo a conjecture on the triviality of certain Schur multiplier associated with a symplectic space over finite field. The new argument uses the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group associated with a symplectic space over a finite field, and a simple application of Weil representation. This argument is applicable to the regular characters in general which include the cuspidal cases as well as the regular …
We find all irreducible constituents of the Weil representation of a unitary group $U_m(A)$ of rank $m$ associated to a ramified quadratic extension $A$ of a finite, commutative, local and principal ring $R$ of odd characteristic. We show that this Weil representation is multiplicity free with monomial irreducible constituents. We also find the number of these constituents and describe them in terms of Clifford theory with respect to a congruence subgroup. We find all character degrees in the special case when $R$ is a field.
In this paper we construct a new variant of the Weil representation, associated with a symplectic vector space V defined over a finite field of characteristic two. Our variant is a representation of a bigger group than that of Weil. In the course, we develop the formalism of canonical vector spaces, which enables us to realize the bigger symmetry group and the representation in a transparent manner.
The representation theory of the symmetric group has been intensively studied for over 100 years and is one of the gems of modern mathematics. The full transformation monoid $\mathfrak T_n$ (the monoid of all self-maps of an $n$-element set) is the monoid analogue of the symmetric group. The investigation of its representation theory was begun by Hewitt and Zuckerman in 1957. Its character table was computed by Putcha in 1996 and its representation type was determined in a series of papers by Ponizovski{\uı}, Putcha and Ringel between 1987 and 2000. From their work, one can deduce that the glo…
Two groups are called isocategorical over a field $k$ if their respective categories of $k$-linear representations are monoidally equivalent. We classify isocategorical groups over arbitrary fields, extending the earlier classification of Etingof-Gelaki and Davydov for algebraically closed fields. In order to construct concrete examples of isocategorical groups a new variant of the Weil representation associated to isocategorical groups is defined. We construct examples of non-isomorphic isocategorical groups over any field of characteristic different from two and rational Weil representations…
Given F a locally compact, non-discrete, non-archimedean field of characteristic different from 2 and R an integral domain such that a non-trivial smooth F-character with values in the multiplicative group of R exists, we construct the (reduced) metaplectic group attached to R. We show that it is in most cases a double cover of the symplectic group over F. Finally we define a faithful infinite dimensional R-representation of the metaplectic group analogue to the Weil representation in the complex case.
Let $F$ be a field which is, either local non archimedean, or finite, of residual charcateristic $p$ but of characteristic different from $2$. Let $W$ be a symplectic space of finite dimension over $F$. Suppose $R$ is a field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$ so that there exists a non trivial smooth additive character $ψ: F \to R^\times$. Then the Stone-von Neumann theorem of the Heisenberg group $H(W)$ is still valid for representations with coefficients in $R$. It leads to a projective representation of the group $\text{Sp}(W)$ which lifts to a genuine smooth representation of a central exten…
We show that the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,F), where F is a non-archimedian local field, can be realized over the field obtained from the rationals by adjoining the square roots of p and -p, where p is the residue characteristic of F; p is assumed to be odd.
It is well known(cf. Weil, Gérardin's works) that there are two different Weil representations of a symplectic group over an odd finite field. By a twisted action, we show that one can reorganize them as a representation of a related projective symplectic similitude group. We also discuss the even field case by following Genestier-Lysenko and Gurevich-Hadani's works on geometric Weil representations in characteristic two. As a result, we approach some of their results from the lattice model, which is inspired by MVW, Prasad and Takeda's works.
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be an involutive discrete valuation ring with residue field of characteristic not 2. Let $A$ be a quotient of ${\mathcal O}$ by a nonzero power of its maximal ideal and let $*$ be the involution that $A$ inherits from ${\mathcal O}$. We consider various unitary groups ${\mathcal U}_m(A)$ of rank $m$ over $A$, depending on the nature of $*$ and the equivalence type of the underlying hermitian or skew hermitian form. Each group ${\mathcal U}_m(A)$ gives rise to a Weil representation. In this paper, we give a Clifford theory description of all irreducible components of the Weil…
Steinberg showed that when a finite reflection group acts on a real or complex vector space of finite dimension, the Jacobian determinant of a set of basic invariants factors into linear forms which define the reflecting hyperplanes. This result generalizes verbatim to fields whose characteristic is prime to the order of the group. Our main theorem gives a generalization of Steinberg's result for arbitrary fields using a ramification formula of Benson and Crawley-Boevey. As an intermediate result, we show that every finite group which fixes a hyperplane pointwise has a polynomial ring of invar…
For a given prime $p$, a new construction of families of the complex valued sequences of period $p$ with efficient implementation is given by applying both multiplicative characters and additive characters of finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$. Such a signal set consists of $p^2(p-2)$ time-shift distinct sequences, the magnitude of the two-dimensional autocorrelation function (i.e., the ambiguity function) in both time and phase of each sequence is upper bounded by $2\sqrt{p}$ at any shift not equal to $(0, 0)$, and the magnitude of the ambiguity function of any pair of phase-shift distinct sequences…
