Let V be a symplectic vector space over a finite or local field. We compute the character of the Weil representation of the metaplectic group Mp(V). The final formulas are overtly free of choices (e.g. they do not involve the usual choice of a Lagrangian subspace of V). Along the way, in results similar to those of K. Maktouf, we relate the character to the Weil index of a certain quadratic form, which may be understood as a Maslov index. This relation also expresses the character as the pullback of a certain simple function from Mp(V\oplus V).
We study beta-extensions in a p-adic classical group and we produce a relation between some beta-extensions by means of a Weil representation. We apply this to the study of reducibility points of some parabolically induced representations.
We construct Weil representations of twisted loop groups of type $A_n^{(2)}$ over local fields. We prove that the associated cover of the twisted loop group is the two fold metaplectic cover of the affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_n^{(2)}$ given by Patnaik-Puskas.
Weil's representation is a basic object in representation theory which plays a crucial role in many places: construction of unitary irreducible representations in the frame of the orbit method, Howe correspondence, Theta series,... The decomposition in irreducible of the restriction of Weil's representation to maximal compact subgroups or anisotropic tori of the metaplectic group is thus an important information in representation theory. Except for SL(2), this was not known in the p-adic case. In this article, we prove that the restriction of the Weil representation over a p-adic field, p diff…
The Weil representation is used to construct a minimal type of the two-fold central extension of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Q}_2)$. The corresponding Hecke algebra is shown to be isomorphic to the classical affine Hecke algebra of the split adjoint orthogonal group $\operatorname{SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{Q}_2)$.
We find the irreducible decomposition of the Weil representation of the unitary group $\mathrm{U}_{2n}(A)$, where $A$ is a ramified quadratic extension of a finite, commutative, local, principal ideal ring $R$ and the nilpotency degree of the maximal ideal of $A$ is odd. We show in particular that this Weil representation is multiplicity free. Restriction to the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU}_{2n}(A)$ preserves irreducibility and multiplicity freeness provided $n>1$.
We give the decomposition into irreducible factors of Weil representations of the symplectic groups at even levels, generalizing previous decompositions at odd levels. We then derive the decomposition of the quantum representations of SL2(Z) arising in the SU(2) and SO(3) TQFTs. As application we show that, when the level indexing the TQFT is not a multiple of 4, the universal construction applied to a cobordism category without framed links leads to the same TQFT.
We find all irreducible constituents of the Weil representation of a unitary group $U_m(A)$ of rank $m$ associated to a ramified quadratic extension $A$ of a finite, commutative, local and principal ring $R$ of odd characteristic. We show that this Weil representation is multiplicity free with monomial irreducible constituents. We also find the number of these constituents and describe them in terms of Clifford theory with respect to a congruence subgroup. We find all character degrees in the special case when $R$ is a field.
We construct via generators and relations a generalized Weil representation for the split orthogonal group $\ot_q(2n,2n)$ over a finite field of $q$ elements. Besides, we give an initial decomposition of the representation found. We also show that the constructed representation is equal to the restriction of the Weil representation to $\ot_q(2n,2n)$ for the reductive dual pair $(\Sp_2(\mathbb{F}_q),\ot_q(2n,2n))$ and that the initial decomposition is the same as the decomposition with respect to the action of $\Sp_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$.
In this article we construct Weil representations of quasi-split unitary groups $U(n,n)(\mathbb{F}_{q^2}/\mathbb{F}_q)$ associated to quadratic extensions of finite fields. We define these representations by using an adequate presentation Bruhat like of those groups. More precisely, we define Weil representations of $U(n,n)(\mathbb{F}_{q^2}/\mathbb{F}_q)$ associating to each generator a linear map of a suitable $\mathbb{C}$-vector space satisfying the relations of the aforementioned presentation. In addition, we also address the natural question on the compatibility of our representation of $U…
We present here an elementary geometric approach to the construction of Weil representations of the star-analogues $SL_\ast(2,A), A$ a ring or algebra with involution $\ast$, of the group SL(2, k), k a field, reminiscent of the quantum groups $SL_q(2,A)$. We review as well the elementary construction of Weil representations for these groups via generators and relations, which uses the Bruhat presentation available in many cases. We compare the representations obtained by both methods in the non - classical case of the finite truncated polynomial algebra $A_m$ of degree $m$ with its canonical i…
Let ${\mathcal O}$ be an involutive discrete valuation ring with residue field of characteristic not 2. Let $A$ be a quotient of ${\mathcal O}$ by a nonzero power of its maximal ideal and let $*$ be the involution that $A$ inherits from ${\mathcal O}$. We consider various unitary groups ${\mathcal U}_m(A)$ of rank $m$ over $A$, depending on the nature of $*$ and the equivalence type of the underlying hermitian or skew hermitian form. Each group ${\mathcal U}_m(A)$ gives rise to a Weil representation. In this paper, we give a Clifford theory description of all irreducible components of the Weil…
In this paper, we will point out a gap in the proof of a theorem of G.Hill (J. Algebra, 174 (1995), 610-635) and will give new arguments to give a remedy in the non-dyadic case modulo a conjecture on the triviality of certain Schur multiplier associated with a symplectic space over finite field. The new argument uses the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group associated with a symplectic space over a finite field, and a simple application of Weil representation. This argument is applicable to the regular characters in general which include the cuspidal cases as well as the regular …
The Weil representation discovered by Andre Weil plays an important role in the study of the tranformation properties of theta series. In this paper, we define the Weil-Schroedinger representation of the Jacobi group and prove that the theta series associated with the Weil-Schroedinger representation is a Jacobi form with respect to a suitable arithmetic subgroup of the Jacobi modular group.
We construct a complex linear Weil representation $ρ$ of the generalized special linear group $G={\rm SL}_*^{1}(2,A_n)$ ($A_n=K[x]/\langle x^n\rangle$, $K$ the quadratic extension of the finite field $k$ of $q$ elements, $q$ odd), where $A_n$ is endowed with a second class involution. After the construction of a specific data, the representation is defined on the generators of a Bruhat presentation of $G$, via linear operators satisfying the relations of the presentation. The structure of a unitary group $U$ associated to $G$ is described. Using this group we obtain a first decomposition of $ρ…
Let $F$ be a field which is, either local non archimedean, or finite, of residual charcateristic $p$ but of characteristic different from $2$. Let $W$ be a symplectic space of finite dimension over $F$. Suppose $R$ is a field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$ so that there exists a non trivial smooth additive character $ψ: F \to R^\times$. Then the Stone-von Neumann theorem of the Heisenberg group $H(W)$ is still valid for representations with coefficients in $R$. It leads to a projective representation of the group $\text{Sp}(W)$ which lifts to a genuine smooth representation of a central exten…
This paper was motivated by a remarkable group, the maximal subgroup $M=S_3\ltimes 2^{2+1}_{-}\ltimes3^{2+1}\ltimes2^{6+1}_{-}$ of the sporadic simple group ${\rm Fi}_{23}$, where $S_3$ is the symmetric group of degree 3, and $2^{2+1}_{-}$, $3^{2+1}$ and $2^{6+1}_{-}$ denote extraspecial groups. The representation $3^{2+1}\to{\rm GL}(3,\mathbb{F}_4)\to{\rm GL}(6,\mathbb{F}_2)$ extends (remarkably) to $S_3\ltimes 2^{2+1}_{-}\ltimes3^{2+1}$ and preserves a quadratic form (of minus type) which allows the construction of $M$. The paper describes certain (Weil) representations of extraspecial group…
In this manuscript, we develope the theory of harmonic analysis on the Heisenberg group G of high dimension. We investigate the theta functions and the Weil representation related to this Heisenberg group and describe the connection among them.
We construct, by contraction of a suitable complex vector bundle, the Weil representation of the finite symplectic group $Sp(A)$. We give an explicit description of the space of all lagrangian subspaces, which we use to compute the cocycle of our representation in terms of a geometric Gauss sum. We recover in this way previously constructed generalized Weil representations (see \cite{ast,cor}) by restriction of our representation to an appropiate embedding of $SL(n) $ into $Sp(A)$.
It is well known(cf. Weil, Gérardin's works) that there are two different Weil representations of a symplectic group over an odd finite field. By a twisted action, we show that one can reorganize them as a representation of a related projective symplectic similitude group. We also discuss the even field case by following Genestier-Lysenko and Gurevich-Hadani's works on geometric Weil representations in characteristic two. As a result, we approach some of their results from the lattice model, which is inspired by MVW, Prasad and Takeda's works.
We develop a simple algebraic approach to the study of the Weil representation associated to a finite abelian group. As a result, we obtain a simple proof of a generalisation of a well-known formula for the absolute value of its character. We also obtain a new result about its decomposition into irreducible representations. As an example, the decomposition of the Weil representation of Sp_{2g}(Z/NZ) is described for odd N.
We show that the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,F), where F is a non-archimedian local field, can be realized over the field obtained from the rationals by adjoining the square roots of p and -p, where p is the residue characteristic of F; p is assumed to be odd.
Let Sp_V(F) be the group of isometries of a symplectic vector space V over a finite field F of odd cardinality. The group Sp_V(F) possesses distinguished representations--- the Weil representations. We know that they are compatible with base change in the sense of Shintani for a finite extension F'/F. The result is also true for the group of similitudes of V.
Based upon new global class field concepts leading to Langlands two-dimensional global correspondences,a modular representation of cusp forms is proposed in terms of global elliptic (bisemi)modules which are (truncated) Fourier series over R.As application, the conjectures of Shimura-Taniyama-Weil,Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer and Riemann are analyzed.
Two groups are called isocategorical over a field $k$ if their respective categories of $k$-linear representations are monoidally equivalent. We classify isocategorical groups over arbitrary fields, extending the earlier classification of Etingof-Gelaki and Davydov for algebraically closed fields. In order to construct concrete examples of isocategorical groups a new variant of the Weil representation associated to isocategorical groups is defined. We construct examples of non-isomorphic isocategorical groups over any field of characteristic different from two and rational Weil representations…
In this paper we obtain a decomposition formula of the uniform projection of the Weil character of a finite reductive dual pair consisting of a symplectic group and an even orthogonal group. This is the first and major step to give an explicit description of the Howe correspondence on unipotent characters confirming a conjecture by Aubert-Michel-Rouquier.
Let F be a finite field of odd cardinality, and let G= GL2(F). The group G \times G \times G acts on F^2 \otimes F^2 \otimes F^2 via symplectic similitudes, and has a natural Weil representation. Answering a question rasised by V. Drinfeld, we decompose that representation into irreducibles. We also decompose the analogous representation of GL2(A), where A is a cubic algebra over F.
The Jacobi group is the semi-direct product of the symplectic group and the Heisenberg group. The Jacobi group is an important object in the framework of quantum mechanics, geometric quantization and optics. In this paper, we study the Weil representations of the Jacobi group and their properties. We also provide their applications to the theory of automorphic forms on the Jacobi group and representation theory of the Jacobi group.
Given F a locally compact, non-discrete, non-archimedean field of characteristic different from 2 and R an integral domain such that a non-trivial smooth F-character with values in the multiplicative group of R exists, we construct the (reduced) metaplectic group attached to R. We show that it is in most cases a double cover of the symplectic group over F. Finally we define a faithful infinite dimensional R-representation of the metaplectic group analogue to the Weil representation in the complex case.
In this paper, we define the concept of Jacobi forms of half-integral weight using Takase's automorohic factor of weight 1/2 for a two-fold covering group of the symplectic group on the Siegel upper half plane and find covariant maps for the Schroedinger-Weil representation. Using these covariant maps, we construct Jacobi forms of half-integral weight with respect to an arithmetic subgroup of the Jacobi group.
In this paper, we propose a formula relating certain residues of Eisenstein series on symplectic groups. These Eisenstein series are attached to parabolic data coming from Speh representations. The proposed formula bears a strong similarity to the regularized Siegel-Weil formula, established by Kudla and Rallis for symplectic-orthogonal dual pairs. Their work was later generalized by Ikeda, Moeglin, Ichino, Yamana, Gan-Qiu-Takeda and others.
We construct via generators and relations, generalized Weil representations for analogues of classical $SL(2,k), k$ a field, over involutive base rings $(A, \ast).$ This family of groups covers different kinds of groups, classical and non classical. We give some examples that include symplectic groups as well as non classical groups like $SL_\ast(2,A_m), $ where $A_m$ is the finite modular analogue of the algebra of real m-jets in one dimension with its canonical involutive symmetry.
We give new proofs of two basic results in number theory: The law of quadratic reciprocity and the sign of the Gauss sum. We show that these results are encoded in the relation between the discrete Fourier transform and the action of the Weyl element in the Weil representation modulo p,q and pq.
In this paper we construct a geometric analogue of the Weil representation over a finite field. Our construction is principally invariant, not choosing any specific realization. This eliminates most of the unpleasant formulas that appear in the traditional (non-invariant) approaches, and puts in the forefront some delicate geometric phenomena which underlie this representation.
A description is given of the image of the Weil representation of the symplectic group in the Schwartz space and in the space of tempered distributions under the Gaussian integral transform. We also discuss the problem of infinite dimensional generalization of the Weil representation in the Schwartz space, in order to construct appropriate quantization of free scalar field.
Let $B$ be a ring, not necessarily commutative, having an involution $*$ and let ${\mathrm U}_{2m}(B)$ be the unitary group of rank $2m$ associated to a hermitian or skew hermitian form relative to $*$. When $B$ is finite, we construct a Weil representation of ${\mathrm U}_{2m}(B)$ via Heisenberg groups and find its explicit matrix form on the Bruhat elements. As a consequence, we derive information on generalized Gauss sums. On the other hand, there is an axiomatic method to define a Weil representation of ${\mathrm U}_{2m}(B)$, and we compare the two Weil representations thus obtained under …
In Part 1 of this paper we construct a spectral sequence converging to the relative Lie algebra cohomology associated to the action of any subgroup $G$ of the symplectic group on the polynomial Fock model of the Weil representation, see Section 7. These relative Lie algebra cohomology groups are of interest because they map to the cohomology of suitable arithmetic quotients of the symmetric space $G/K$ of $G$. We apply this spectral sequence to the case $G = \mathrm{SO}_0(n,1)$ in Sections 8, 9, and 10 to compute the relative Lie algebra cohomology groups $H^{\bullet} \big(\mathfrak{so}(n,1), …
In a previous work the authors gave a conceptual explanation for the linearity of the Weil representation over a finite field k of odd characteristic: There exists a canonical system of intertwining operators between the Lagrangian models of the Heisenberg representation. This defines a canonical vector space H(V) associated with a symplectic vector space V over k. In this paper we prove a general theorem about idempotents in categories, and we use it to solve the sign problem, formulated by Bernstein and Deligne, on the compatibility between the associativity constraint and the convolution st…
Selfdual representations of any group fall into two classes when they are irreducible: those which carry a symmetric bilinear form, and the others which carry an alternating bilinear form. The Langlands correspondence, which matches the irreducible representations σof the Weil group of a local field k of dimension n with the irreducible representations πof the invertible elements of a division algebra D over k of index n, takes selfdual representations to selfdual representations. In this paper we use global methods to study how the Langlands correspondence behaves relative to this distinction…
In these notes we discuss the "self-reducibility property" of the Weil representation. We explain how to use this property to obtain sharp estimates of certain higher-dimensional exponential sums which originate from the theory of quantum chaos. As a result, we obtain the Hecke quantum unique ergodicity theorem for generic linear symplectomorphism $A$ of the torus $T^{2N}=R^{2N}/Z^{2N}.
The Weil representation of the symplectic group associated to a finite abelian group of odd order is shown to have a multiplicity-free decomposition. When the abelian group is p-primary, the irreducible representations occurring in the Weil representation are parametrized by a partially ordered set which is independent of p. As p varies, the dimension of the irreducible representation corresponding to each parameter is shown to be a polynomial in p which is calculated explicitly. The commuting algebra of the Weil representation has a basis indexed by another partially ordered set which is inde…
In this paper we construct a new variant of the Weil representation, associated with a symplectic vector space V defined over a finite field of characteristic two. Our variant is a representation of a bigger group than that of Weil. In the course, we develop the formalism of canonical vector spaces, which enables us to realize the bigger symmetry group and the representation in a transparent manner.
We describe a new method to bound certain higher-dimensional exponential sums which are associated with tori in symplectic groups over finite fields. Our method is based on the self-reducibility property of the Weil representation. As a result, we obtain a sharp form of the Hecke quantum unique ergodicity theorem for generic linear symplectomorphisms of the 2N-dimensional torus.
