The Jacobi group is the semi-direct product of the symplectic group and the Heisenberg group. The Jacobi group is an important object in the framework of quantum mechanics, geometric quantization and optics. In this paper, we study the Weil representations of the Jacobi group and their properties. We also provide their applications to the theory of automorphic forms on the Jacobi group and representation theory of the Jacobi group.
In this paper, we define the concept of Jacobi forms of half-integral weight using Takase's automorohic factor of weight 1/2 for a two-fold covering group of the symplectic group on the Siegel upper half plane and find covariant maps for the Schroedinger-Weil representation. Using these covariant maps, we construct Jacobi forms of half-integral weight with respect to an arithmetic subgroup of the Jacobi group.
The Weil representation discovered by Andre Weil plays an important role in the study of the tranformation properties of theta series. In this paper, we define the Weil-Schroedinger representation of the Jacobi group and prove that the theta series associated with the Weil-Schroedinger representation is a Jacobi form with respect to a suitable arithmetic subgroup of the Jacobi modular group.
We discuss the notion of Jacobi forms of degree one with matrix index, we state dimension formulas, give explicit examples, and indicate how closely their theory is connected to the theory of invariants of Weil representations associated to finite quadratic modules.
Jacobi forms can be considered as vector valued modular forms, and Jacobi forms of critical weight correspond to vector valued modular forms of weight $\frac12$. Since the only modular forms of weight $\frac12$ on congruence subgroups of $\SL$ are theta series the theory of Jacobi forms of critical weight is intimately related to the theory of Weil representations of finite quadratic modules. This article explains this relation in detail, gives an account of various facts about Weil representations which are useful in this context, and it gives some applications of the theory developed herein …
We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.
In this article we extend work of Shanks and Washington on cyclic extensions, and elliptic curves associated to the simplest cubic fields. In particular, we give families of examples of hyperelliptic curves $C: y^2=f(x)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with $f(x)$ of degree $p$, where $p$ is a Sophie Germain prime, such that the rank of the Mordell--Weil group of the jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ of $C$ is bounded by the genus of $C$ and the $2$-rank of the class group of the (cyclic) field defined by $f(x)$, and exhibit examples where this bound is sharp.
We calculate the Jacobi Eisenstein series of weight $k \ge 3$ for a certain representation of the Jacobi group, and evaluate these at $z = 0$ to give coefficient formulas for a family of modular forms $Q_{k,m,β}$ of weight $k \ge 5/2$ for the (dual) Weil representation on an even lattice. The forms we construct always contain all cusp forms within their span. We explain how to compute the representation numbers in the coefficient formulas for $Q_{k,m,β}$ and the Eisenstein series of Bruinier and Kuss $p$-adically to get an efficient algorithm. The main application is in constructing automorphi…
In this manuscript, we develope the theory of harmonic analysis on the Heisenberg group G of high dimension. We investigate the theta functions and the Weil representation related to this Heisenberg group and describe the connection among them.
It is well known(cf. Weil, Gérardin's works) that there are two different Weil representations of a symplectic group over an odd finite field. By a twisted action, we show that one can reorganize them as a representation of a related projective symplectic similitude group. We also discuss the even field case by following Genestier-Lysenko and Gurevich-Hadani's works on geometric Weil representations in characteristic two. As a result, we approach some of their results from the lattice model, which is inspired by MVW, Prasad and Takeda's works.
We study the theta decomposition of Jacobi forms of nonintegral lattice index for a representation that arises in the theory of Weil representations associated to even lattices, and suggest possible applications.
We develop a simple algebraic approach to the study of the Weil representation associated to a finite abelian group. As a result, we obtain a simple proof of a generalisation of a well-known formula for the absolute value of its character. We also obtain a new result about its decomposition into irreducible representations. As an example, the decomposition of the Weil representation of Sp_{2g}(Z/NZ) is described for odd N.
We show that the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,F), where F is a non-archimedian local field, can be realized over the field obtained from the rationals by adjoining the square roots of p and -p, where p is the residue characteristic of F; p is assumed to be odd.
Let Sp_V(F) be the group of isometries of a symplectic vector space V over a finite field F of odd cardinality. The group Sp_V(F) possesses distinguished representations--- the Weil representations. We know that they are compatible with base change in the sense of Shintani for a finite extension F'/F. The result is also true for the group of similitudes of V.
Based upon new global class field concepts leading to Langlands two-dimensional global correspondences,a modular representation of cusp forms is proposed in terms of global elliptic (bisemi)modules which are (truncated) Fourier series over R.As application, the conjectures of Shimura-Taniyama-Weil,Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer and Riemann are analyzed.
Let F be a finite field of odd cardinality, and let G= GL2(F). The group G \times G \times G acts on F^2 \otimes F^2 \otimes F^2 via symplectic similitudes, and has a natural Weil representation. Answering a question rasised by V. Drinfeld, we decompose that representation into irreducibles. We also decompose the analogous representation of GL2(A), where A is a cubic algebra over F.
Given F a locally compact, non-discrete, non-archimedean field of characteristic different from 2 and R an integral domain such that a non-trivial smooth F-character with values in the multiplicative group of R exists, we construct the (reduced) metaplectic group attached to R. We show that it is in most cases a double cover of the symplectic group over F. Finally we define a faithful infinite dimensional R-representation of the metaplectic group analogue to the Weil representation in the complex case.
We prove a p-adic analogue of Wüstholz's analytic subgroup theorem. We apply this result to show that a curve embedded in its Jacobian intersects the p-adic closure of the Mordell-Weil group transversely whenever the latter has rank equal to 1. This allows us to give some theoretical justification to Chabauty techniques applied to finding rational points on curves whose Jacobian has Mordel-Weil group of rank 1.
We give new proofs of two basic results in number theory: The law of quadratic reciprocity and the sign of the Gauss sum. We show that these results are encoded in the relation between the discrete Fourier transform and the action of the Weyl element in the Weil representation modulo p,q and pq.
Answering a question of Ed Schaefer, we show that if J is the Jacobian of a curve C over a number field, if s is an automorphism of J coming from an automorphism of C, and if u lies in the subring Z[s] of End J and has connected kernel, then it is not necessarily the case that u gives a surjective map from the Mordell-Weil group of J to the Mordell-Weil group of its image.
Selfdual representations of any group fall into two classes when they are irreducible: those which carry a symmetric bilinear form, and the others which carry an alternating bilinear form. The Langlands correspondence, which matches the irreducible representations σof the Weil group of a local field k of dimension n with the irreducible representations πof the invertible elements of a division algebra D over k of index n, takes selfdual representations to selfdual representations. In this paper we use global methods to study how the Langlands correspondence behaves relative to this distinction…
The lattice model of the Weil representation over non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residual characteristic has been known for decades, and is used to prove the Howe duality conjecture for unramified dual pairs when the residue characteristic of $F$ is odd. In this paper, we will modify the lattice model of the Weil representation so that it is defined independently of the residue characteristic. Although to define the lattice model alone is not enough to prove the Howe duality conjecture for even residual characteristic, we will propose a couple of conjectural lemmas which imply the Howe…
We construct explicit local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>2$, whose geometric monodromy groups are the finite symplectic groups $Sp_{2n}(q)$ for all $n \ge 2$, and others whose geometric monodromy groups are the special unitary groups $SU_n(q)$ for all odd $n \ge 3$, and $q$ any power of $p$, in their total Weil representations. One principal merit of these local systems is that their associated trace functions are one-parameter families of exponential sums of a very simple, i.e., easy to remember, form. We also exhibit hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m$, whose geometric monodro…
We define Hecke operators on vector valued modular forms transforming with the Weil representation associated to a discriminant form. We describe the properties of the corresponding algebra of Hecke operators and study the action on modular forms.
The Weil representation of the symplectic group associated to a finite abelian group of odd order is shown to have a multiplicity-free decomposition. When the abelian group is p-primary, the irreducible representations occurring in the Weil representation are parametrized by a partially ordered set which is independent of p. As p varies, the dimension of the irreducible representation corresponding to each parameter is shown to be a polynomial in p which is calculated explicitly. The commuting algebra of the Weil representation has a basis indexed by another partially ordered set which is inde…
We propose an algorithm for computing bases and dimensions of spaces of invariants of Weil representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ associated to finite quadratic modules. We prove that these spaces are defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and that their dimension remains stable if we replace the base field by suitable finite prime fields.
We show that the Weil representation associated with any discriminant form admits a basis in which the action of the representation involves algebraic integers. The action of a general element of $\operatorname{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ on many parts of these bases is simple an explicit, a fact that we use for determining the dimension of the space of invariants for some families of discriminant forms.
We show that a Frobenius-semisimple Weil representation over a local field K is determined by its Euler factors over the extensions of K. The construction is explicit, and we illustrate it for l-adic representations attached to elliptic and genus 2 curves. As an application, we construct an absolutely simple 2-dimensional abelian variety over Q all of whose quadratic twists must have positive rank, according to the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We give coefficient formulas for antisymmetric vector-valued cusp forms with rational Fourier coefficients for the Weil representation associated to a finite quadratic module. The forms we construct always span all cusp forms in weight at least three. These formulas are useful for computing explicitly with theta lifts.
In this note, we consider discriminant forms that are given by the norm form of real quadratic fields and their induced Weil representations. We prove that there exists an isomorphism between the space of vector-valued modular forms for the Weil representations that are invariant under the action of the automorphism group and the space of scalar-valued modular forms that satisfy some epsilon-condition, with which we translate Borcherds's theorem of obstructions to scalar-valued modular forms. In the end, we consider an example in the case of level 12.
We establish an isomorphism between certain complex-valued and vector-valued modular form spaces of half-integral weight, generalizing the well-known isomorphism between modular forms for $Γ_0(4)$ with Kohnen's plus condition and modular forms for the Weil representation associated to the discriminant form for the lattice with Gram matrix $(2)$. With such an isomorphism, we prove the Zagier duality and write down the Borcherds lifts explicitly.
Let $V$ be a finite abelian group of odd order, equipped with a non-degenerate, alternating form $ω\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We give closed formulas for the character values of the Weil representation associated with $(V,ω)$. These formulas generalize the ones given by S. Gurevich and R. Hadani (2007) and by T. Thomas (2008, 2013) from finite vector spaces to abelian groups. Our formulas do not involve the choice of a Lagrangian subgroup of $V$. Our proofs are based on an elementary algebraic approach introduced by H. N. Ward (1972, 2017) for finite vector spaces over field…
To a finite quadratic module, that is, a finite abelian group D together with a non-singular quadratic form Q:D --> Q/Z, it is possible to associate a representation of either the modular group, SL(2,Z), or its metaplectic cover, Mp(2,Z), on C[D], the group algebra of D. This representation is usually called the Weil representation associated to the finite quadratic module. The main result of this paper is a general explicit formula for the matrix coefficients of this representation. The formula, which involves the p-adic invariants of the quadratic module, is given in a way which is easy to i…
In this paper, we give a two dimensional analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. By using this formula, we obtain an integral representation of Weil's elliptic functions which was introduced in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and Kronecker".
We develop geometric methods to study the generating weights of free modules of vector valued modular forms of half-integral weight, taking values in a complex representation of the metaplectic group. We then compute the generating weights for modular forms taking values in the Weil representation attached to cyclic quadratic modules of order 2p^r, where p is a prime greater than three. We also show that the generating weights approach a simple limiting distribution as p grows, or as r grows and p remains fixed.
Given a curve X of the form y^p = h(x) over a number field, one can use descents to obtain explicit bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian or to prove that the curve has no rational points. We show how, having performed such a descent, one can easily obtain additional information which may rule out the existence of rational divisors on X of degree prime to p. This can yield sharper bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank by demonstrating the existence of nontrivial elements in the Shafarevich-Tate group. As an example we compute the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian of a genus 4 curve over Q …
In this paper, we prove the weak Siegel-Weil formula for the space M_2(Q) . We study the Hecke correspondence and representation numbers associated to Eichler orders, and give the explicit formula for degree of Hecke correspondence and average representation numbers over genus. This formula could recover the main results in [DuYang]. We could identify these numbers with the Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series via Siegel-Weil formula(weak Siegel-Weil formula for M_2(Q). In the last part of this article, we reprove four square sum Theorem via Siegel-Weil formula and Kudla's matching.
In this paper we construct a new variant of the Weil representation, associated with a symplectic vector space V defined over a finite field of characteristic two. Our variant is a representation of a bigger group than that of Weil. In the course, we develop the formalism of canonical vector spaces, which enables us to realize the bigger symmetry group and the representation in a transparent manner.
Suppose that $M$ is an even lattice with dual $M^{*}$ and level $N$. Then the group $Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, which is the unique non-trivial double cover of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, admits a representation $ρ_{M}$, called the Weil representation, on the space $\mathbb{C}[M^{*}/M]$. The main aim of this paper is to show how the formulae for the $ρ_{M}$-action of a general element of $Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ can be obtained by a direct evaluation which does not depend on ``external objects'' such as theta functions. We decompose the Weil representation $ρ_{M}$ into $p$-parts, in which each $p$-part can be…
Consider an irreducible, admissible representation $π$ of GL(2,$F$) whose restriction to GL(2,$F)^+$ breaks up as a sum of two irreducible representations $π_+ + π_-$. If $π=r_θ$, the Weil representation of GL(2,$F$) attached to a character $θ$ of $K^*$ which does not factor through the norm map from $K$ to $F$, then $χ\in \hat{K^*}$ with $(χ>. θ^{-1})|_{F^{*}}=ω_{K/F}$ occurs in ${r_θ}_+$ if and only if $ε(θχ^{-1},ψ_0)=ε(\bar θχ^{-1},ψ_0)=1$ and in ${r_θ}_-$ if and only if both the epsilon factors are -1. But given a conductor $n$, can we say precisely how many such $χ$ will appear in $π$? We…
We compute the Fourier expansion of vector valued Eisenstein series for the Weil representation associated to an even lattice. To this end, we define certain twists by Dirichlet characters of the usual Eisenstein series associated to isotropic elements in the discriminant form of the underlying lattice. These twisted functions still form a generating system for the space of Eisenstein series but have better multiplicative properties than the individual Eisenstein series. We adapt a method of Bruinier and Kuss to obtain algebraic formulas for the Fourier coefficients of the twisted Eisenstein s…
