Recently Donkin defined signed Young modules as a simultaneous generalization of Young and twisted Young modules for the symmetric group. We show that in odd characteristic, if a Specht module $S^λ$ is irreducible, then $S^λ$ is a signed Young module. Thus the set of irreducible Specht modules coincides with the set of irreducible signed Young modules. This provides evidence for our conjecture that the signed Young modules are precisely the class of indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations. The theorem is false in characteristic two.
By a result of Hemmer, every simple Specht module of a finite symmetric group over a field of odd characteristic is a signed Young module. While Specht modules are parametrized by partitions, indecomposable signed Young modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. The main result of this article establishes the signed Young module labels of simple Specht modules. Along the way we prove a number of results concerning indecomposable signed Young modules that are of independent interest. In particular, we determine the label of the indecomposable signed Young module obtained by tensor…
We consider the problem of classifying irreducible Specht modules for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type B with parameters Q,q. We solve this problem completely in the case where q is not a root of unity, and in the case q=-1 we reduce the problem to the corresponding problem in type A.
We construct a class $Θ_{\mathscr{R}}$ of homomorphisms from a Specht module $S_{\mathbb{Z}}^λ$ to a signed permutation module $M_{\mathbb{Z}}(α|β)$ which generalises James's construction of homomorphisms whose codomain is a Young permutation module. We show that any $ϕ\in \operatorname{Hom}_{\mathbb{Z}\mathfrak{S}_{n}}\big(S_{\mathbb{Z}}^λ, M_{\mathbb{Z}}(α|β)\big)$ lies in the $\mathbb{Q}$-span of $Θ_{\text{sstd}}$, a subset of $Θ_{\mathscr{R}}$ corresponding to semistandard $λ$-tableaux of type $(α|β)$. We also study the conditions for which $Θ^{\mathbb{F}}_{\mathrm{sstd}}$ - a subset of $\…
Let $p$ be a prime and $\mathbb{F}$ a field of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathcal{H}_n$ denote the Iwahori--Hecke algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ over $\mathbb{F}$ at $q=-1$. We prove that there are only finitely many partitions $λ$ such that both $λ$ and $λ'$ are 2-singular and the Specht module $S^λ$ for $\mathcal{H}_{|\la|}$ is irreducible.
For any prime p, we construct, and simultaneously count, all of the complex Specht modules in a given p-block of the symmetric group which remain irreducible when reduced modulo p. We call the Specht modules with this property p-irreducible modules. Recently Fayers has proven a conjecture of James and Mathas that provides a characterization of the partitions that correspond to the p-irreducible modules. In this paper we present a method for decomposing the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible modules, and we use this decomposition to construct and count all of the partitions corresponding…
Over fields of characteristic zero, there are well known constructions of the irreducible representations, due to A Young, and of irreducible modules, called Specht modules, due to W Specht, for the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ which are based on elegant combinatorial concepts connected with Young tableaux etc.(see, e.g.{\bf [13]}). James {\bf [12]} extended these ideas to construct irreducible representations and modules over arbitrary field. Al-Aamily, Morris and Peel {\bf [1]} showed how this construction could be extended cover the Weyl groups of type $B_{n}$. In {\bf [14]} Morris described a …
Over fields of characteristic zero, there are well known construction of the irreducible representations and of irreducible modules, called Specht modules for the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ which are based on elegant combinatorial concepts connected with Young tableaux etc.(see, e.g.[10]). James [8] extended these ideas to construct irreducible representations and modules over arbitrary field. Al-Aamily, Morris and Peel [ 1 ] showed how this construction could be extended to deal with the Weyl groups of type $B_{n}$. In [11] the second author described a possible extension of James' work for Wey…
We present (with proof) a new family of decomposable Specht modules for the symmetric group in characteristic 2. These Specht modules are labelled by partitions of the form $(a,3,1^b)$, and are the first new examples found for thirty years. Our method of proof is to exhibit summands isomorphic to irreducible Specht modules, by constructing explicit homomorphisms between Specht modules.
The construction of all irreducible modules of the symmetric groups over an arbitrary field which reduce to Specht modules in the case of fields of characteristic zero is given by G.D.James. Halıcıoğlu and Morris describe a possible extension of James' work for Weyl groups in general, where Young tableaux are interpreted in terms of root systems. In this paper we show how to construct submodules of Specht modules for Weyl groups.
Let p be an odd prime, and A_n the alternating group of degree n. We determine which ordinary irreducible representations of A_n remain irreducible in characteristic p, verifying the author's conjecture from [Represent. Theory 14, 601-626]. Given the preparatory work done in [op. cit.], our task is to determine which self-conjugate partitions label Specht modules for the symmetric group in characteristic p having exactly two composition factors. This is accomplished through the use of the Robinson-Brundan-Kleshchev 'i-restriction' functors, together with known results on decomposition numbers …
Brundan, Kleshchev and Wang equip the Specht modules $S_λ$ over the cyclotomic Khovanov--Lauda--Rouquier algebra $\mathscr{H}_n^Λ$ with a homogeneous $\mathbb{Z}$-graded basis. In this paper we begin the study of graded Specht modules labelled by hook bipartitions $((n-m),(1^m))$ in level $2$ of $\mathscr{H}_n^Λ$, which are precisely the Hecke algebras of type B, with quantum characteristic at least three. We give an explicit description of the action of the Khovanov--Lauda--Rouquier algebra generators $ψ_1,\dots,ψ_{n-1}$ on the basis elements of $S_{((n-m),(1^m))}$. Introducing certain Specht…
Specht modules for an Ariki-Koike algebra have been investigated recently in the context of cellular algebras. Thus, these modules are defined as quotient modules of certain ``permutation'' modules, that is, defined as ``cell modules'' via cellular bases. We shall introduce in this paper Specht modules for an Ariki-Koike algebra as submodules of those ``permutation'' modules and investigate their basic properties such as Standard Basis Theorem and the ordinary Branching Theorem, generalizing several classical constructions for type $A$. The second part of the paper moves on looking for Kleshch…
Schur modules give the irreducible polynomial representations of the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_t$. Viewing the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_t$ as a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_t$, we may restrict Schur modules to $\mathfrak{S}_t$ and decompose the result into a direct sum of Specht modules, the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{S}_t$. We give an equivariant Möbius inversion formula that we use to invert this expansion in the representation ring for $\mathfrak{S}_t$ for $t$ large. In addition to explicit formulas in terms of plethysms, we show the coefficients that appear alternat…
In a previous paper, the authors studied the radical filtration of a Weyl module $Δ_ζ(λ)$ for quantum enveloping algebras $U_ζ(\overset\circ{\mathfrak g})$ associated to a finite dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra $\overset\circ{\mathfrak g}$. There $ζ^2=\sqrt[e]{1}$ and $λ$ was, initially, required to be $e$-regular. Some additional restrictions on $e$ were required---e.g., $e>h$, the Coxeter number, and $e$ odd. Translation to a facet gave an explicit semisimple series for all quantum Weyl modules with singular, as well as regular, weights. That is, the sections of the filtration are…
In this paper, we study an irreducible decomposition structure of the $\Dc$-module direct image $π_+(\Oc_{ \bC^n})$ for the finite map $π: \bC^n \to \bC^n/ ({\Sc_{n_1}\times \cdots \times \Sc_{n_r}}).$ We explicitly construct the simple component of $π_+(\Oc_{\bC^n})$ by providing their generators and their multiplicities. Using an equivalence of categories and the higher Specht polynomials, we describe a $\D$-module decomposition of the polynomial ring localized at the discriminant of $π$. Furthermore, we study the action invariants, differential operators, on the higher Specht polynomials.
Let $q$ be a prime power, $G=GL_n(q)$ and let $U\leqslant G$ be the subgroup of (lower) unitriangular matrices in $G$. For a partition $λ$ of $n$ denote the corresponding unipotent Specht module over the complex field $\C$ for $G$ by $S^λ$. It is conjectured that for $c\in \Z_{\geqslant 0}$ the number of irreducible constituents of dimension $q^c$ of the restriction $\RRes^{G}_U(S^λ)$ of $S^λ$ to $U$ is a polynomial in $q$ with integer coefficients depending only on $c$ and $λ$, not on $q$. In the special case of the partition $λ=(1^n)$ this implies a longstanding (still open) conjecture of Hi…
The symmetric group S_n possesses a nontrivial central extension, whose irreducible representations, different from the irreducible representations of S_n itself, coincide with the irreducible representations of a certain algebra A_n. Recently M.~Nazarov realized irreducible representations of A_n and Young symmetrizers by means of the Howe duality between the Lie superalgebra q(n) and the Hecke algebra H_n, the semidirect product of S_n with the Clifford algebra C_n on n indeterminates. Here I construct one more analog of Young symmetrizers in H_n as well as the analogs of Specht modules for …
Let H_q(S_n) be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is semisimple over the rational function field Q(q), where q is an indeterminate, and its irreducible representations over this field are q-analogues S_q(lambda) of the Specht modules of the symmetric group. The q-Specht modules have an "integral form" which is defined over the Laurent polynomial ring Z_[q,q^{-1}] and they come equipped with a natural bilinear form with values in this ring. Now Z[q,q^{-1}] is not a principal ideal domain. Nonetheless, we try to compute the elementary divisors of the Gram matrix of t…
Let n be a positive integer and let p be a prime. Suppose that we take a partition of n, and obtain another partition by moving a node from one row to a shorther row. Carter and Payne showed that if the p-residue of the removed and added positions is the same, then there is a non-zero homomorphism between the corresponding Specht modules for the symmetric group of degree n, defined over a field of characteristic p. In this paper we give a very simple description of such a homomorphism, as a map between polytabloids, using the action of a Murphy-Jucys element. We also present a proof that in th…
Perhaps the most important problem in representation theory in the 1970s and early 1980s was the determination of the multiplicity of composition factors in a Verma module. This problem was settled by the proof of the Kazhdan-Lusztig Conjecture which states that the multiplicities may be computed via Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In this paper, we introduce signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, a variation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials which encodes signature information in addition to composition factor multiplicities and Jantzen filtration level. Careful consideration of Gabber and Joseph's pr…
The famous Kazhdan-Lusztig Conjecture of the 1970s states that the multiplicity of an irreducible composition factor of a Verma module can be computed by evaluating Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials at 1. Thus the character of a Verma module is a linear combination of characters of irreducible highest weight modules where the coefficients in the linear combination are Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1. Kazhdan-Lusztig showed that inverting and writing the character of an irreducible highest weight module as a linear combination of characters of Verma modules, the coefficients in the linear …
The irreducible representations of symmetric groups can be realized as certain graded pieces of invariant rings, equivalently as global sections of line bundles on partial flag varieties. There are various ways to choose useful bases of such Specht modules $S^λ$. Particularly powerful are web bases, which make important connections with cluster algebras and quantum link invariants. Unfortunately, web bases are only known in very special cases -- essentially, only the cases $λ=(d,d)$ and $λ=(d,d,d)$. Building on work of B. Rhoades (2017), we construct an apparent web basis of invariant polynomi…
We construct a new family of homomorphisms from Specht modules into Foulkes modules for the symmetric group. These homomorphisms are used to give a combinatorial description of the minimal partitions (in the dominance order) which label irreducible characters appearing as summands of the characters of Foulkes modules. The homomorphisms are defined using certain families of subsets of the natural numbers. These families are of independent interest; we prove a number of combinatorial results concerning them.
Motivated by studying the Unitary Dual Problem, a variation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials was defined in [Yee08] which encodes signature information at each level of the Jantzen filtration. These so called signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials may be used to compute the signatures of invariant Hermitian forms on irreducible highest weight modules. The key result of this paper is a simple relationship between signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials: signed Kahzdan-Lusztig polynomials are shown to equal classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at $-q$ ra…
This paper explains the relation between the fusion product of symmetric power sl(n) evaluation modules, as defined by Feigin and Loktev, and the graded coordinate ring R(mu), which describes the cohomology ring of the flag variety Fl(mu) of GL(N). The graded multiplicity spaces appearing in the decomposition of the fusion product into irreducible sl(n)-modules are identified with the multiplicity spaces of the Specht modules in R(mu). This proves that the Kostka polynomial gives the character of the fusion product in this case. In the case of the product of fundamental evaluation modules, we …
