We construct a new family of homomorphisms from Specht modules into Foulkes modules for the symmetric group. These homomorphisms are used to give a combinatorial description of the minimal partitions (in the dominance order) which label irreducible characters appearing as summands of the characters of Foulkes modules. The homomorphisms are defined using certain families of subsets of the natural numbers. These families are of independent interest; we prove a number of combinatorial results concerning them.
This paper proves a combinatorial rule giving all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ such that the Schur function $s_λ$ appears in a plethysm of two arbitrary Schur functions. Determining the decomposition of these plethysms has been identified by Stanley as a key open problem in algebraic combinatorics. As corollaries we prove three conjectures of Agaoka on the partitions labelling the lexicographically greatest and least Schur functions appearing in an arbitrary plethysm. We also show that the multiplicity of the Schur function labelled by the lexicographically least constituent may be arbit…
The Foulkes module H^(a^b) is the permutation module for the symmetric group S_ab given by the action of S_ab on the collection of set partitions of a set of size ab into b sets each of size a. The main result of this paper is a sufficient condition for a simple CS_{ab}-module to have zero multiplicity in H^(a^b). A special case of this result implies that no Specht module labelled by a hook partition (ab - r, 1^r) appears in H(a^b).
In this paper we study the modular structure of the permutation module $H^{(2^n)}$ of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ acting on set partitions of a set of size $2n$ into $n$ sets each of size $2$, defined over a field of odd characteristic $p$. In particular we characterize the vertices of the indecomposable summands of $H^{(2^n)}$ and fully describe all of its indecomposable summands that lie in blocks of $p$-weight at most two. When $2n < 3p$ we show that there is a unique summand of $H^{(2^n)}$ in the principal block of $S_{2n}$ and that this summand exhibits many of the extensions between sim…
The decomposition matrix of a finite group in prime characteristic p records the multiplicities of its p-modular irreducible representations as composition factors of the reductions modulo p of its irreducible representations in characteristic zero. The main theorem of this paper gives a combinatorial description of certain columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in odd prime characteristic. The result applies to blocks of arbitrarily high weight. It is obtained by studying the p-local structure of certain twists of the permutation module given by the action of the symmetric …
We study the indecomposable summands of the permutation module obtained by inducing the trivial $\mathbb{F}(S_a\wr S_n)$-module to the full symmetric group $S_{an}$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd prime characteristic $p$ such that $a<p\leq n$. In particular we characterize the vertices of such indecomposable summands. As a corollary we will disprove a modular version of Foulkes' Conjecture. In the second part of the article we will use this information to give a new description of some columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in terms of the ordinary character of the Foulke…

We prove a conjecture for the irreducibility of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. We describe explicitly the irreducible subquotients of certain classes of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules.
We investigate the category of U(h)-free g-modules. Using a functor from this category to the category of coherent families, we show that U(h)-free modules only can exist when g is of type A or C. We then proceed to classify isomorphism classes of U(h)-free modules of rank 1 in type C, which includes an explicit construction of new simple sp(2n)-modules. Finally, we show how translation functors can be used to obtain simple U(h)-free modules of higher rank.
Given a finite-dimensional module, $V$, for a finite-dimensional, complex, semi-simple Lie algebra $\lie g$ and a positive integer $m$, we construct a family of graded modules for the current algebra $\lie g[t]$ indexed by simple $\CC\lie S_m$-modules. These modules have the additional structure of being free modules of finite rank for the ring of symmetric polynomials and so can be localized to give finite-dimensional graded $\lie g[t]$-modules. We determine the graded characters of these modules and show that if $\lie g$ is of type $A$ and $V$ the natural representation, these graded charact…
The problem of classifying modules over a tame algebra A reduces to a block matrix problem of tame type whose indecomposable canonical matrices are zero- or one-parameter. Respectively, the set of nonisomorphic indecomposable modules of dimension at most d divides into a finite number f(d,A) of modules and one-parameter series of modules. We prove that the number of m-by-n canonical parametric block matrices with a given partition into blocks is bounded by 4^s, where s is the number of free entries (which is at most mn), and estimate the number f(d,A).
We construct families of representations for quantum groups over $\mathbb{Z}[v,v^{-1}]$-algebras that interpolate between Weyl modules and tilting modules. These families might be candidates for objects with characters satisfying the {\em generations of characters} philosophy of Lusztig and Lusztig-Williamson.
We examine from an algebraic point of view some families of unitary group representations that arise in mathematical physics and are associated to contraction families of Lie groups. The contraction families of groups relate different real forms of a reductive group and are continuously parametrized, but the unitary representations are defined over a parameter subspace that includes both discrete and continuous parts. Both finite- and infinite-dimensional representations can occur, even within the same family. We shall study the simplest nontrivial examples, and use the concepts of algebraic f…
Let $n>1$ be an integer, $α\in{\mathbb C}^n$, $b\in{\mathbb C}$, and $V$ a $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-module. We define a class of weight modules $F^α_{b}(V)$ over $\sl_{n+1}$ using the restriction of modules of tensor fields over the Lie algebra of vector fields on $n$-dimensional torus. In this paper we consider the case $n=2$ and prove the irreducibility of such 5-parameter $\mathfrak{sl}_{3}$-modules $F^α_{b}(V)$ generically. All such modules have infinite dimensional weight spaces and lie outside of the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. Hence, this construction yields new families of irreducibl…
The purpose of this paper is to construct new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for U_q(gl_n). These modules have arbitrary singularity and Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities bounded by 2. Most previously known irreducible modules had all Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities bounded by 1 \cite{FRZ1}, \cite{FRZ2}. In particular, our method works for q=1 providing new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for gl_n. This generalizes the results of \cite{FGR3} and \cite{FRZ}.
The first main result is that the Casselman-Wallach Globalization of a real analytic family of Harish-Chandra modules is continuous in the parameter. Our proof of this result uses results from the thesis of Vincent van der Noort in several critical ways. In his thesis the holomorphic version of the result was proved in the case when the parameter space is a one dimensional complex manifold up to a branched covering. The second main result is a proof of the meromorphic continuation of $C^{\infty}$ Eisenstein series.using Langlands' results in the $K$ finite case as an application of the methods…
In this paper, we construct, investigate and, in some cases, classify several new classes of (simple) modules over the Takiff $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$. More precisely, we first explicitly construct and classify, up to isomorphism, all modules over the Takiff $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ that are $U\left(\overline{\mathfrak{h}}\right)$-free of rank one. These split into three general families of modules. The sufficient and necessary conditions for simplicity of these modules are presented, and their isomorphism classes are determined. Using the vector space duality and Mathieu's twisting functors, these thre…
We introduce the notions of quasi-Laurent and Laurent families of simple modules over quiver Hecke algebras of arbitrary symmetrizable types. We prove that such a family plays a similar role of a cluster in the quantum cluster algebra theory and exhibits a quantum Laurent positivity phenomenon for the basis of the quantum unipotent coordinate ring $\mathcal{A}_q(\mathfrak{n}(w))$, coming from the categorification. Then we show that the families of simple modules categorifying GLS-clusters are Laurent families by using the PBW-decomposition vector of a simple module $X$ and categorical interpre…
In this paper we develop machinery for studying sequences of representations of any of the three families of classical Weyl groups, extending work of Church, Ellenberg, Farb, and Nagpal on the symmetric groups S_n to the signed permutation groups B_n and the even-signed permutation groups D_n. For each family W_n, we present an algebraic framework where a sequence V_n of W_n-representations is encoded into a single object we call an FI_W-module. We prove that if an FI_W-module V satisfies a simple finite generation condition then the structure of the sequence is highly constrained. One consequ…
In the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups, many objects have finiteness properties. For example, the lengths of Verma modules and principal series representations are finite, and more precisely, they are bounded. In this paper, we introduce a notion of uniformly bounded families of holonomic $\mathscr{D}$-modules to explain and find such boundedness properties. A uniform bounded family has good properties. For instance, the lengths of modules in the family are bounded and the uniform boundedness is preserved by direct images and inverse images. By the Beilinson--Bernstein corre…
Given a real reductive group Lie group $G_\mathbb{R}$, the Mackey analogy is a bijection between the set of irreducible tempered representations of $G_\mathbb{R}$ and the set of irreducible unitary representations of its Cartan motion group. We show that this bijection arises naturally from families of twisted $\mathcal{D}$-modules over the flag variety of $G_\mathbb{R}$.
We construct new families of U_q(gl_n)-modules by continuation from finite dimensional representations. Each such module is associated with a combinatorial object - admissible set of relations defined in \cite{FRZ}. More precisely, we prove that any admissible set of relations leads to a family of irreducible U_q(gl_n)-modules. Finite dimensional and generic modules are particular cases of this construction.
Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of finite Lie type come with families of standard modules, which under the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier categorification correspond to PBW-bases of the positive part of the corresponding quantized enveloping algebra. We show that there are no non-zero homomorphisms between distinct standard modules and all non-zero endomorphisms of a standard module are injective. We obtain applications to extensions between standard modules and modular representation theory of KLR algebras.
This paper reports key advances in the study of the representation theory of the symplectic blob algebra. For suitable specialisations of the parameters we construct four large families of homomorphisms between cell modules. We hence find a large family of non-semisimple specialisations. We find a minimal poset (i.e. least number of relations) for the symplectic blob as a quasi-hereditary algebra.
A Gelfand-Tsetlin tableau $T(v)$ induces a character $χ_v$ of the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra $Γ$ of $U = U(\mathfrak{gl}(n,\mathbb C))$. By a theorem due to Ovsienko, for each tableau $T(v)$ there exists a finite number of nonisomorphic irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with $χ_v$ in its support, though explicit examples of such modules are only known for special families of characters. In this article we build a family of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules parametrized by characters, such that each character appears in its corresponding module. We also find the support of these modules, with multiplic…
In this short note we construct two families of examples of large stratifying systems in module categories of algebras. The first examples consists on stratifying systems of infinite size in the module category of an algebra $A$. In the second family of examples we show that the size of a finite stratifying system in the module category of a finite dimensional algebra $A$ can be arbitrarily large in comparison to the number of isomorphism classes of simple $A$-modules. We note that both families of examples are built using well-established results in higher homological algebra.
We prove in ZFC that if $G$ is a (right) $R$-module such that the groups $\Hom_R(\prod_{i\in I}G_i,G)$ and $\prod_{i\in I}\Hom_R(G_i,G)$ are naturally isomorphic for all families of $R$-modules $(G_i)_{i\in I}$ then G=0. The result is valid even we restrict to families such that $G_i\cong G$ for all $i\in I$.
Let $k$ be a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra. We study families of functors between categories of finitely generated $R$-modules which are defined for all commutative $k$-algebras $R$ simultaneously and are compatible with base changes. These operations turn out to be Schur functors associated to $k$-linear representations of symmetric groups. This result is closely related to Macdonald's classification of polynomial functors.
We present sum-sides for principal characters of all standard (i.e., integrable and highest-weight) irreducible modules for the affine Lie algebra $A_2^{(2)}$. We use modifications of five known Bailey pairs; three of these are sufficient to obtain all the necessary principal characters. We then use the technique of Bailey lattice appropriately extended to include "out-of-bounds" values of one of the parameters, namely, $i$. We demonstrate how the sum-sides break into six families depending on the level of the modules modulo 6, confirming a conjecture of McLaughlin--Sills.
