We consider two variational evolution problems related to Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer. These problems provide models for collapsing sandpiles and for compression molding. We prove the following connection between these problems and nonlocal geometric curvature motion: The distance functions to surfaces moving according to certain nonlocal geometric laws are solutions of the variational evolution problems. Thus we do the first step of the proof of heuristics developed in earlier works. The main techniques we use are differential equations methods in the Monge-Kantorovich theory.
We provide a suitable variational approach for a class of nonlocal problems involving the fractional laplacian and singular nonlinearities for which the standard techniques fail. As a corollary we deduce a characterization of the solutions.
In this paper we prove the uniqueness and radial symmetry of minimizers for variational problems that model several phenomena. The uniqueness is a consequence of the convexity of the functional. The main technique is Fourier transform of tempered distributions.
We study the regularity of solutions to a nonlocal variational problem, which is related to the image denoising model, and we show that, in two dimensions, minimizers have the same Hölder regularity as the original image. More precisely, if the datum is (locally) $β$-Hölder continuous for some $β\in (1-s,\,1]$, where $s \in (0,1)$ is a parameter related to the nonlocal operator, we prove that the solution is also $β$-Hölder continuous.
We prove existence of variational solutions for a class of nonlocal evolution equations whose prototype is the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u &+ \text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\&+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qr}} \,dy = 0. \end{align*} The approach of minimization of parameter-dependent convex functionals over space-time trajectories requires only appropriate convexity and coercivity assumptions on the nonlocal operator. As the parameter tends to zero, we recover variational solutions. Un…
This paper provides the first variational proof of the existence of periodic nonlocal-CMC surfaces. These are nonlocal analogues of the classical Delaunay cylinders. More precisely, we show the existence of a set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which is periodic in one direction, has a prescribed (but arbitrary) volume within a slab orthogonal to that direction, has constant nonlocal mean curvature, and minimizes an appropriate periodic version of the fractional perimeter functional under the volume constraint. We show, in addition, that the set is cylindrically symmetric and, more significantly, that it is…

We extend classical results on variational inequalities with convex sets with gradient constraint to a new class of fractional partial differential equations in a bounded domain with constraint on the distributional Riesz fractional gradient, the $σ$-gradient ($0<σ<1$). We establish continuous dependence results with respect to the data, including the threshold of the fractional $σ$-gradient. Using these properties we give new results on the existence to a class of quasi-variational variational inequalities with fractional gradient constraint via compactness and via contraction arguments. Usin…
We study the existence of solution for the following class of nonlocal problem, $$ -Δu +V(x)u =\Big( I_μ\ast F(x,u)\Big)f(x,u) \quad \mbox{in} \quad \mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $V$ is a positive periodic potential, $I_μ=\frac{1}{|x|^μ}$, $0<μ<2$ and $F(x,s)$ is the primitive function of $f(x,s)$ in the variable $s$. In this paper, by assuming that the nonlinearity $f(x,s)$ has an exponential critical growth at infinity, we prove the existence of solutions by using variational methods.
We consider the minimizers of the energy $$ \|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}^2+\int_ΩW(u)\,dx,$$ with $s \in (0,1/2)$, where $\|u\|_{H^s(Ω)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Ω$ in the $H^s$ norm of $u$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. By using a fractional Sobolev inequality, we give a new proof of the fact that the sublevel sets of a minimizer $u$ in a large ball $B_R$ occupy a volume comparable with the volume of $B_R$.
We prove existence of variational solutions for a class of doubly nonlinear nonlocal evolution equations whose prototype is the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u^m &+ \text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\&+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qr}} \,dy = 0,\,m>0,\,p>1,\,s,r\in (0,1). \end{align*} We make use of the approach of minimizing movements pioneered by DeGiorgi and Ambrosio and refined by Bögelein, Duzaar, Marcellini, and co-authors to study nonlinear parabolic equations with non-standard growth.
We prove local boundedness of variational solutions to the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u +& P.V.\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\ &+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qs'}} \,dy = 0, \end{align*} under the restrictions $s,s'\in (0,1),\, 1 < p \leq q \leq p\,\frac{2s+N}{N}$ and the non-negative function $(x,y)\mapsto a(x,y)$ is assumed to be measurable and bounded.
The aim of this article is to derive some Lewy-Stampacchia estimates and existence of solutions for equations driven by a nonlocal integro-differential operator on the Heisenberg group.
A nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with dispersion averaged nonlinearity of saturated type is considered. Such a nonlocal NLS is of integro-differential type and it arises naturally in modeling fiber-optics communication systems with periodically varying dispersion profile (dispersion management). The associated constrained variational principle is shown to posses a ground state solution by constructing a convergent minimizing sequence through the application of a method similar to the classical concentration compactness principle of Lions. One of the obstacles in applying this variational…

In this paper, we develop some properties of the $a_{x,y}(.)$-Neumann derivative for the fractional $a_{x,y}(.)$-Laplacian operator. Therefore we prove the basic proprieties of the correspondent function spaces. In the second part of this paper, by means of Ekeland's variational principal and direct variational approach, we prove the existence of weak solutions for a nonlocal problem with nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin boundary condition.
Motivated by the direct method in the calculus of variations in $L^{\infty}$, our main result identifies the notion of convexity characterizing the weakly$^*$ lower semicontinuity of nonlocal supremal functionals: Cartesian level convexity. This new concept coincides with separate level convexity in the one-dimensional setting and is strictly weaker for higher dimensions. We discuss relaxation in the vectorial case, showing that the relaxed functional will not generally maintain the supremal form. Apart from illustrating this fact with examples of multi-well type, we present precise criteria f…
The nonlocal world presents an abundance of surprises and wonders to discover. These special properties of the nonlocal world are usually the consequence of long-range interactions, which, especially in presence of geometric structures and nonlinear phenomena, end up producing a variety of novel patterns. We will briefly discuss some of these features, focusing on the case of (non)local minimal surfaces, (non)local phase coexistence models, and (non)local geometric flows.
In this paper, we study a new model of nonlocal geometric equations which appears in tomographic reconstruction when using the level-set method. We treat two additional difficulties which make the work original. On one hand, the level lines do not evolve along normal directions, and the nonlocal term is not of "convolution type". On the other hand, the speed is not necessarily bounded compared to the nonlocal term. We prove a existence and uniqueness results of our model.
By means of variational methods we establish existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of nonlinear nonlocal problems involving the fractional p-Laplacian and a combined Sobolev and Hardy nonlinearity at subcritical and critical growth.
We consider nonlocal curvature functionals associated with positive interaction kernels, and we show that local anisotropic mean curvature functionals can be retrieved in a blow-up limit from them. As a consequence, we prove that the viscosity solutions to the rescaled nonlocal geometric flows locally uniformly converge to the viscosity solution to the anisotropic mean curvature motion. The result is achieved by combining a compactness argument and a set-theoretic approach related to the theory of De Giorgi's barriers for evolution equations.
We describe a method to show short time uniqueness results for viscosity solutions of general nonlocal and non-monotone second-order geometric equations arising in front propagation problems. Our method is based on some lower gradient bounds for the solution. These estimates are crucial to obtain regularity properties of the front, which allow to deal with nonlocal terms in the equations. Applications to short time uniqueness results for the initial value problems for dislocation type equations, asymptotic equations of a FitzHugh-Nagumo type system and equations depending on the Lebesgue measu…
In this article a nonlocal elliptic problem involving $p$-Laplacian on unbounded domain is considered. Using variational methods and under suitable conditions, the existence of a sequence of radially symmetric weak solutions, in two different cases, is proved.
By means of variational methods we investigate existence, non-existence as well as regularity of weak solutions for a system of nonlocal equations involving the fractional laplacian operator and with nonlinearity reaching the critical growth and interacting, in a suitable sense, with the spectrum of the operator.
We consider a space-inhomogeneous Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov (KPP) equation with a nonlocal diffusion and an almost-periodic nonlinearity. By employing and adapting the theory of homogenization, we show that solutions of this equation asymptotically converge to its stationary states in regions of space separated by a front that is determined by a Hamilton-Jacobi variational inequality.
We describe and analyze nonlocal integro-differential equations with classical local boundary conditions. The interaction kernel of the nonlocal operator has horizon parameter dependent on position in the domain, and vanishes as the boundary of the domain is approached. This heterogeneous localization allows for boundary values to be captured in the trace sense. We state and prove a nonlocal Green's identity for these nonlocal operators that involve local boundary terms. We use this identity to state and establish the well-posedness of variational formulations of the nonlocal problems with sev…
We consider a system of nonlocal equations driven by a perturbed periodic potential. We construct multibump solutions that connect one integer point to another one in a prescribed way. In particular, heteroclinc, homoclinic and chaotic trajectories are constructed. This is the first attempt to consider a nonlocal version of this type of dynamical systems in a variational setting and the first result regarding symbolic dynamics in a fractional framework.
We consider a space-inhomogeneous Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov (KPP) equation with a nonlocal diffusion and a stationary ergodic nonlinearity. By employing and adapting the theory of stochastic homogenization, we show that solutions of this equation asymptotically converge to its stationary states in regions of space separated by a front that is determined by a Hamilton-Jacobi variational inequality.
We introduce a notion of uniform convergence for local and nonlocal curvatures. Then, we propose an abstract method to prove the convergence of the corresponding geometric flows, within the level set formulation. We apply such a general theory to characterize the limits of $s$-fractional mean curvature flows as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$. In analogy with the $s$-fractional mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $s$-Riesz curvature flows and characterize its limit as $s\to 0^-$. Eventually, we discuss the limit behavior as $r\to 0^+$ of the flow generated by a regularization of the $r$…
Existence of stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem arising from the modelling of microelectromechanical systems with heterogeneous dielectric properties is shown. The underlying variational structure of the model is exploited to construct these solutions as minimizers of a suitably regularized energy, which allows us to weaken considerably the assumptions on the model used in a previous article.
The existence of weak solutions to the obstacle problem for a nonlocal semilinear fourth-order parabolic equation is shown, using its underlying gradient flow structure. The model governs the dynamics of a microelectromechanical system with heterogeneous dielectric properties.
We present some recent results obtained by the author on the regularity of solutions to nonlocal variational problems. In particular, we review the notion of fractional De Giorgi class, explain its role in nonlocal regularity theory, and propose some open questions in the subject.
We advance a variational method to prove qualitative properties such as symmetries, monotonicity, upper and lower bounds, sign properties, and comparison principles for a large class of doubly-nonlinear evolutionary problems including gradient flows, some nonlocal problems, and systems of nonlinear parabolic equations. Our method is based on the so-called Weighted-Energy-Dissipation (WED) variational approach. This consists in defining a global parameter-dependent functional over entire trajectories and proving that its minimizers converge to solutions to the target problem as the parameter go…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of nonnegative solutions for the problem $$ -\mathcal{L}_{K}u+V(x)u=f(u) $$ in $\mathbb R^n$, where $-\mathcal{L}_{K}$ is a integro-differential operator with measurable kernel $K$ and $V$ is a continuous potential. Under apropriate hypothesis, we prove, using variational methods, that the above equation has solution.
Casting nonlocal problems in variational form and discretizing them with the finite element (FE) method facilitates the use of nonlocal vector calculus to prove well-posedeness, convergence, and stability of such schemes. Employing an FE method also facilitates meshing of complicated domain geometries and coupling with FE methods for local problems. However, nonlocal weak problems involve the computation of a double-integral, which is computationally expensive and presents several challenges. In particular, the inner integral of the variational form associated with the stiffness matrix is defi…
