In this paper, we study a new model of nonlocal geometric equations which appears in tomographic reconstruction when using the level-set method. We treat two additional difficulties which make the work original. On one hand, the level lines do not evolve along normal directions, and the nonlocal term is not of "convolution type". On the other hand, the speed is not necessarily bounded compared to the nonlocal term. We prove a existence and uniqueness results of our model.
We consider a nonlocal parabolic model for a micro-electro-mechanical system. Specifically, for a radially symmetric problem with monotonic initial data, it is shown that the solution quenches, so that touchdown occurs in the device, in a situation where there is no steady state. It is also shown that quenching occurs at a single point and a bound on the approach to touchdown is obtained. Numerical simulations illustrating the results are given.
In some models involving nonlinear conservation laws, physical mechanisms exist which prevent the formation of shocks. This gives rise to conservation laws with a constraint on the gradient of the solution. We approach this problem by studying a related conservation law with a spatial nonlocal term. We prove existence, uniqueness and stability of solution of the Cauchy problem for this nonlocal conservation law. In turn, this allows us to provide a notion of solution to the conservation law with a gradient constraint. The proof of existence is based on a time-stepping technique, and an $L^1$-c…
This paper focuses on the proof of the stability of entropy weak solutions of a nonlocal balance law modeling vehicular traffic flow on a road with on- and off-ramps. The stability is obtained with respect to a kernel function in the source term. We get an estimate of the L1-dependence of the solution with respect to the initial datum, the on-ramp rate, the off-ramp rate and the mentioned kernel function. We also show numerical experiments in order to perform an optimization problem in traffic flow with on-ramps.
In the current work we study a nonlocal parabolic problem with Robin boundary conditions. The problem arises from the study of an idealized electrically actuated MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) device. Initially we study the steady-state problem in one dimension and we present some numerical results regarding its bifurcation diagram. Next the $N-$dimensional nonlocal problem steady-state problem is investigated and a Pohozaev-type identity is first obtained which then facilitates derivation of an estimate of the pull-in voltage for radially symmetric domains. Later the time-dependent pr…
Our main interest in this paper is the study of homogenised limit of a parabolic equation with a nonlinear dynamic boundary condition of the micro-scale model set on a domain with periodically place particles. We focus on the case of particles (or holes) of critical diameter with respect to the period of the structure. Our main result proves the weak convergence of the sequence of solutions of the original problem to the solution of a reaction-diffusion parabolic problem containing a `strange term'. The novelty of our result is that this term is a nonlocal memory solving an ODE. We prove that …
The minimal wave speed of time-periodic traveling waves arising from a diffusive Kermack-McKendrick model with seasonality and nonlocal delayed interactions
In the present study a mathematical model of long-crested water waves propagating mainly in one direction with the effect of Earth's rotation is derived by following the formal asymptotic procedures. Such a model equation is analogous to the Camassa-Holm approximation of the two-dimensional incompressible and irrotational Euler equations and has a formal bi-Hamiltonian structure. Its solution corresponding to physically relevant initial perturbations is more accurate on a much longer time scale. It is shown that the deviation of the free surface can be determined by the horizontal velocity at …
In this paper we consider a 2D nonlinear and nonlocal model describing the dynamics of the dislocation densities. We prove the local well-posedness of strong solution to this system in the suitable functional framework, and we show the global well-posedness for some dissipative cases by the method of nonlocal maximum principle.
In this paper we study pattern formation for a physical local/nonlocal interaction functional where the local attractive term is given by the $1$-perimeter and the nonlocal repulsive term is the Yukawa (or screened Coulomb) potential. This model is physically interesting as it is the $Γ$-limit of a double Yukawa model used to explain and simulate pattern formation in colloidal systems \cite{BBCH,CCA,IR,GCLW}. Following a strategy introduced in~\cite{DR} we prove that in a suitable regime minimizers are periodic stripes, in any space dimension.
We introduce a unified framework based on bi-level optimization schemes to deal with parameter learning in the context of image processing. The goal is to identify the optimal regularizer within a family depending on a parameter in a general topological space. Our focus lies on the situation with non-compact parameter domains, which is, for example, relevant when the commonly used box constraints are disposed of. To overcome this lack of compactness, we propose a natural extension of the upper-level functional to the closure of the parameter domain via Gamma-convergence, which captures possibl…
In this paper we study an aggregation equation with a general nonlocal flux. We study the local well-posedness and some conditions ensuring global existence. We are also interested in the differences arising when the nonlinearity in the flux changes. Thus, we perform some numerics corresponding to different convexities for the nonlinearity in the equation.
We show that the operator \[ T_{K,s_1,s_2}f(z) := \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} A_{K,s_1,s_2}(z_1,z_2) f(z_2)\, dz_2 \] is a Calderon-Zygmund operator. Here for $K \in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$, and $s,s_1,s_2 \in (0,1)$ with $s_1+s_2 = 2s$ we have \[ A_{K,s_1,s_2}(z_1,z_2) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \frac{K(x,y) \left (|x-z_1|^{s_1-n} -|y-z_1|^{s_1-n} \right )\, \left (|x-z_2|^{s_2-n} -|y-z_2|^{s_2-n}\right )}{|x-y|^{n+2s}}\, dx\, dy. \] This operator is motivated by the recent work by Mengesha-Schikorra-Yeepo where it appeared as analogue of the Riesz transforms for th…
Existence of stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem arising from the modelling of microelectromechanical systems with heterogeneous dielectric properties is shown. The underlying variational structure of the model is exploited to construct these solutions as minimizers of a suitably regularized energy, which allows us to weaken considerably the assumptions on the model used in a previous article.
We study a nonlocal Allen-Cahn type problem for vector fields of unit length, arising from a model for domain walls (called Néel walls) in ferromagnetism. We show that the nonlocal term gives rise to new features in the energy landscape; in particular, we prove existence of energy minimisers with prescribed winding number that would be prohibited in a local model.
We analyse the obstacle problem for the nonlocal parabolic operator \[\partial_t u + (-Δ)^{s} u - b \cdot \nabla u - \mathcal{I}u - ru,\] where $b\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $r\in\mathbb{R}$, and $\mathcal{I}$ is a nonlocal lower order diffusion operator with respect to the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$. This model appears in the study of American options pricing when the stochastic process governing the stock price is assumed to be a purely jump process. We study the existence and the uniqueness of solutions to the obstacle problem, and we prove optimal regularity of solutions in space, and al…
We prove the well-posedness results, i.e. existence, uniqueness, and stability, of the solutions to a class of nonlocal fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), where there is an external time parameter $t$ on top of the temporal and spatial variables $(s,y)$ and thus the problem could be considered as a flow of equations. The nonlocality comes from the dependence on the unknown function and its first- and second-order derivatives evaluated at not only the local point $(t,s,y)$ but also at the diagonal line of the time domain $(s,s,y)$. Such equations arise from time-in…
We are concerned with travelling wave solutions arising in a reaction diffusion equation with bistable and nonlocal nonlinearity, for which the comparison principle does not hold. Stability of the equilibrium $u\equiv 1$ is not assumed. We construct a travelling wave solution connecting 0 to an unknown steady state, which is "above and away", from the intermediate equilibrium. For focusing kernels we prove that, as expected, the wave connects 0 to 1. Our results also apply readily to the nonlocal ignition case.
We propose here a motivation for a mixed local/nonlocal problem with a new type of Neumann condition. Our description is based on formal expansions and approximations. In a nutshell, a biological species is supposed to diffuse either by a random walk or by a jump process, according to prescribed probabilities. If the process makes an individual exit the niche, it must come to the niche right away, by selecting the return point according to the underlying stochastic process. More precisely, if the random particle exits the domain, it is forced to immediately reenter the domain, and the new poin…
We describe a method to show short time uniqueness results for viscosity solutions of general nonlocal and non-monotone second-order geometric equations arising in front propagation problems. Our method is based on some lower gradient bounds for the solution. These estimates are crucial to obtain regularity properties of the front, which allow to deal with nonlocal terms in the equations. Applications to short time uniqueness results for the initial value problems for dislocation type equations, asymptotic equations of a FitzHugh-Nagumo type system and equations depending on the Lebesgue measu…
We study the existence of Feller semigroups arising in the theory of multidimensional diffusion processes. We study bounded perturbations of elliptic operators with boundary conditions containing an integral over the closure of the domain with respect to a nonnegative Borel measure without assuming that the measure is small. We state sufficient conditions on the measure guaranteeing that the corresponding nonlocal operator is the generator of a Feller semigroup.
We study nonlocal first-order equations arising in the theory of dislocations. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions of these equations in the case of positive and negative velocities, under suitable regularity assumptions on the initial data and the velocity. These results are based on new $L^1$-type estimates on the viscosity solutions of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations appearing in the so-called ``level-sets approach''. Our work is inspired by and simplifies a recent work of Alvarez, Cardaliaguet and Monneau.
We discuss some results related to a phase transition model in which the potential energy induced by a double-well function is balanced by a fractional elastic energy. In particular, we present asymptotic results (such as $Γ$-convergence, energy bounds and density estimates for level sets), flatness and rigidity results, and the construction of planelike minimizers in periodic media. Finally, we consider a nonlocal equation with a multiwell potential, motivated by models arising in crystal dislocations, and we construct orbits exhibiting symbolic dynamics, inspired by some classical results by…
We prove global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the mild, Lp and classical solution of a non-linear Fokker-Planck equation arising in an adaptive importance sampling method for molecular dynamics calculations. The non- linear term is related to a conditional expectation, and is thus non-local. The proof uses tools from the theory of semigroups of linear operators for the local existence result, and an a priori estimate based on a supersolution for the global existence result.
We consider the degenerate parabolic equation with nonlocal source given by \[ u_t=uΔu + u \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} |\nabla u|^2, \] which has been proposed as model for the evolution of the density distribution of frequencies with which different strategies are pursued in a population obeying the rules of replicator dynamics in a continuous infinite-dimensional setting. Firstly, for all positive initial data $u_0\in C^0(\mathbb{R}^n)$ satisfying $u_0\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some $p\in (0,1)$ as well as $\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} u_0=1$, the corresponding Cauchy problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is seen to pos…
We study the initial-value problem for a general class of nonlinear nonlocal coupled wave equations. The problem involves convolution operators with kernel functions whose Fourier transforms are nonnegative. Some well-known examples of nonlinear wave equations, such as coupled Boussinesq-type equations arising in elasticity and in quasi-continuum approximation of dense lattices, follow from the present model for suitable choices of the kernel functions. We establish local existence and sufficient conditions for finite time blow-up and as well as global existence of solutions of the problem.
We study the diffusion (or heat) equation on a finite 1-dimensional spatial domain, but we replace one of the boundary conditions with a "nonlocal condition", through which we specify a weighted average of the solution over the spatial interval. We provide conditions on the regularity of both the data and weight for the problem to admit a unique solution, and also provide a solution representation in terms of contour integrals. The solution and well-posedness results rely upon an extension of the Fokas (or unified) transform method to initial-nonlocal value problems for linear equations; the n…
In this paper, we study a nonlocal degenerate parabolic equation of order α + 2 for 0<α<2. The equation is a generalization of the one arising in the modeling of hydraulic fractures studied by Imbert and Mellet in 2011. Using the same approach, we prove the existence of solutions for this equation for 0<α<2 and for nonnegative initial data satisfying appropriate assumptions. The main difference is the compactness results due to different Sobolev embeddings. Furthermore, for α > 1, we construct a nonnegative solution for nonnegative initial data under weaker assumptions.
In this paper we establish the sharp asymptotic decay of positive solutions of the Yamabe type equation $\frlap u=u^{\frac{Q+2s}{Q-2s}}$ in a homogeneous Lie group, where $\frlap$ represents a suitable pseudodifferential operator modelled on a class of nonlocal operators arising in conformal CR geometry.
This paper recalls some classical motivations in fluid dynamics leading to a partial differential equation which is prescribed on a domain whose boundary possesses two connected components, one endowed with a Dirichlet datum, and the other endowed with a Neumann datum. The problem can also be reformulated as a nonlocal problem on the component endowed with the Dirichlet datum. A series of recent symmetry results are presented and compared with the existing literature.
We establish sharp higher-order Hölder regularity estimates up to the boundary for solutions to equations of the form $\partial_t u-Lu=f(t,x)$ in $I\timesΩ$ where $I\subset\mathbb{R}$, $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and $f$ is Hölder continuous. The nonlocal operators $L$ considered are those arising in stochastic processes with jumps such as the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes that, if $f$ is $C^γ$ is space and $C^{γ/2s}$ in time, and $Ω$ is a $C^{2,γ}$ domain, then $u/d^s$ is $C^{s+γ}$ up to the boundary in space and $u$ is $C^{1+γ/2s}$ up the boundary in time…
In this work we demonstrate that a class of some one and two phase free boundary problems can be recast as nonlocal parabolic equations on a submanifold. The canonical examples would be one-phase Hele Shaw flow, as well as its two-phase analog. We also treat nonlinear versions of both one and two phase problems. In the special class of free boundaries that are graphs over $\mathbb{R}^d$, we give a precise characterization that shows their motion is equivalent to that of a solution of a nonlocal (fractional), nonlinear parabolic equation for functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our main observation is …
In this paper, we quantify the asymptotic limit of collective behavior kinetic equations arising in mathematical biology modeled by Vlasov-type equations with nonlocal interaction forces and alignment. More precisely, we investigate the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker--Smale flocking model with confinement, nonlocal interaction, and local alignment forces, linear damping and diffusion in velocity. We first discuss the hydrodynamic limit of our main equation under strong local alignment and diffusion regime, and we rigorously derive the isothermal Euler equations with nonlocal forces. We…
Motivated by problems arising in geometric flows, we prove several regularity results for systems of local and nonlocal equations, adapting to the parabolic case a neat argument due to Caffarelli. The geometric motivation of this work comes from recent works arising in the theory harmonic maps with free boundary in particular. We prove Hölder regularity of weak solutions.
We provide a review of recent advancements in nonlocal continuous models for migration, mainly from the perspective of its involvement in embryonal development and cancer invasion. Particular emphasis is placed on spatial nonlocality occurring in advection terms, used to characterise a cell's motility bias according to its interactions with other cellular and acellular components in its vicinity (e.g., cell-cell and cell-tissue adhesions, nonlocal chemotaxis), but we also shortly address spatially nonlocal source terms. Following a brief introduction and motivation, we give a systematic classi…
We construct a deterministic, Lagrangian many-particle approximation to a class of nonlocal transport PDEs with nonlinear mobility arising in many contexts in biology and social sciences. The approximating particle system is a nonlocal version of the follow-the-leader scheme. We rigorously prove that a suitable discrete piece-wise density reconstructed from the particle scheme converges strongly in $L^1_{loc}$ towards the unique entropy solution to the target PDE as the number of particles tends to infinity. The proof is based on uniform BV estimates on the approximating sequence and on the ve…
In this article we prove the existence of classical solutions to a system of mean field games arising in the study of exhaustible resource production under market competition. Individual trajectories are modeled by a controlled diffusion process with jumps, which adds a nonlocal term to the PDE system. The assumptions on the Hamiltonian are sufficiently general to cover a large class of examples proposed in the literature on Bertrand and Cournot mean field games. Uniqueness also holds under a sufficient restriction on the structure of the Hamiltonian, which in practice amounts to a small upper…
We prove interior Harnack's inequalities for solutions of fractional nonlocal equations. Our examples include fractional powers of divergence form elliptic operators with potentials, operators arising in classical orthogonal expansions and the radial Laplacian. To get the results we use an analytic method based on a generalization of the Caffarelli--Silvestre extension problem, the Harnack's inequality for degenerate Schrödinger operators proved by C. E. Gutiérrez, and a transference method. In this manner we apply local PDE techniques to nonlocal operators. On the way a maximum principle and …

We study stability of stationary solutions for a class of non-local semilinear parabolic equations. To this end, we prove the Feynman--Kac formula for a Lévy processes with time-dependent potentials and arbitrary initial condition. We propose sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the zero solution, and use them to the study of the spatial logistic equation arising in population ecology. For this equation, we find conditions which imply that its positive stationary solution is asymptotically stable. We consider also the case when the initial condition is given by a random field.
Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used, with huge success, to model phenomena arising across all scientific and engineering disciplines. However, across an equally wide swath, there exist situations in which PDE models fail to adequately model observed phenomena or are not the best available model for that purpose. On the other hand, in many situations, nonlocal models that account for interaction occurring at a distance have been shown to more faithfully and effectively model observed phenomena that involve possible singularities and other anomalies. In this article, we consider a gen…
