We prove existence of variational solutions for a class of doubly nonlinear nonlocal evolution equations whose prototype is the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u^m &+ \text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\&+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qr}} \,dy = 0,\,m>0,\,p>1,\,s,r\in (0,1). \end{align*}
We make use of the approach of minimizing movements pioneered by DeGiorgi and Ambrosio and refined by Bögelein, Duzaar, Marcellini, and co-authors to study nonlinear parabolic equations with non-standard growth.
We establish Harnack's estimates for positive weak solutions to a mixed local and nonlocal doubly nonlinear parabolic equation. All results presented in this paper are provided together with quantitative estimates.
We establish a local boundedness estimate for weak subsolutions to a doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equation. Our argument relies on energy estimates and a parabolic nonlocal version of De Giorgi's method. Furthermore, by means of a new algebraic inequality, we show that positive weak supersolutions satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality. Finally, we also prove a logarithmic decay estimate for positive supersolutions.
The theory of elliptic equations involving singular nonlinearities is well studied topic but the interaction of singular type nonlinearity with nonlocal nonlinearity in elliptic problems has not been investigated so far. In this article, we study the very singular and doubly nonlocal singular problem $(P_λ)$(See below). Firstly, we establish a very weak comparison principle and the optimal Sobolev regularity. Next using the critical point theory of non-smooth analysis and the geometry of the energy functional, we establish the global multiplicity of positive weak solutions.
We study the existence, bifurcations, and stability of stationary solutions for the doubly-nonlocal Fisher-KPP equation. We prove using Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction that under suitable conditions on the parameters, a bifurcation from the non-trivial homogeneous state can occur. The kernel of the linearized operator at the bifurcation is two-dimensional and periodic stationary patterns are generated. Then we prove that these patterns are, again under suitable conditions, locally asymptotically stable. We also compare our results to previous work on the nonlocal Fisher-KPP equation containing a lo…
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, an issue of regularity of weak solution to the problem $(P)$ (See below) is addressed. Secondly, we investigate the question of $H^s$ versus $C^0$- weighted minimizers of the functional associated to problem $(P)$ and then give applications to existence and multiplicity results.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic dynamics of Fisher-KPP equations with nonlocal dispersal operator and nonlocal reaction term in time periodic and space heterogeneous media. We first show the global existence and boundedness of nonnegative solutions, and then obtain some sufficient conditions ensuring the uniform persistence. In particular, we study the existence, uniqueness and global stability of positive time periodic solutions under several different conditions.
We discuss pointwise behavior of weak supersolutions for a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations which includes the fractional parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the fractional porous medium equation. More precisely, we show that weak supersolutions have lower semicontinuous representative. We also prove that the semicontinuous representative at an instant of time is determined by the values at previous times. This gives a pointwise interpretation for a weak supersolution at every point. The corresponding results hold true also for weak subsolutions. Our results …
This work is devoted to the study of the existence of solutions to nonlocal equations involving the fractional Laplacian. These equations have a variational structure and we find a nontrivial solution for them using the Mountain Pass Theorem. To make the nonlinear methods work, some careful analysis of the fractional spaces involved is necessary. In addition, we require rather general assumptions on the local operator. As far as we know, this result is new and represent a fractional version of a classical theorem obtained working with Laplacian equations.
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
The nonlinear and nonlocal PDE $$ |v_t|^{p-2}v_t+(-Δ_p)^sv=0 \, , $$ where $$ (-Δ_p)^s v\, (x,t)=2 \,\text{PV} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|v(x,t)-v(x+y,t)|^{p-2}(v(x,t)-v(x+y,t))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy, $$ has the interesting feature that an associated Rayleigh quotient is non-increasing in time along solutions. We prove the existence of a weak solution of the corresponding initial value problem which is also unique as a viscosity solution. Moreover, we provide Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions and relate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the eigenvalue problem for the fractional $p$-Lap…
In this article we study global existence and blow-up of solutions for a general class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearities, $u_{tt}-Lu_{xx}=B(- |u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}, ~(p>1)$, where the nonlocality enters through two pseudo-differential operators $L$ and $B$. We establish thresholds for global existence versus blow-up using the potential well method which relies essentially on the ideas suggested by Payne and Sattinger. Our results improve the global existence and blow-up results given in the literature for the present class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations and c…
Some qualitative and quantitative properties of weak solutions to mixed anisotropic and nonlocal quasilinear elliptic and doubly nonlinear parabolic equations
This article concerns about the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for the following nonlinear doubly nonlocal problem with critical nonlinearity in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{split} (-Δ)^su &= λ|u|^{q-2}u + \left(\int_Ω\frac{|v(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}~\mathrm{d}y\right) |u|^{2^*_μ-2}u\; \text{in}\; Ω (-Δ)^sv &= δ|v|^{q-2}v + \left(\int_{\Om}\frac{|u(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}~\mathrm{d}y \right) |v|^{2^*_μ-2}v \; \text{in}\; Ω u &=v=0\; \text{in}\; \mb R^n\setminusΩ, \end{split} \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded dom…
We study traveling waves for a reaction-diffusion equation with nonlocal anisotropic diffusion and a linear combination of local and nonlocal monostable-type reactions. We describe relations between speeds and asymptotic of profiles of traveling waves, and prove the uniqueness of the profiles up to shifts.
We consider a Fisher-KPP-type equation, where both diffusion and nonlinear part are nonlocal, with anisotropic probability kernels. Under minimal conditions on the coefficients, we prove existence, uniqueness, and uniform space-time boundedness of the positive solution. We investigate existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of monotone traveling waves for the equation. We also describe the existence and main properties of the front of propagation.
We study propagation over $\mathbb{R}^d$ of the solution to a nonlocal nonlinear equation with anisotropic kernels, which can be interpretted as a doubly nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation of the Fisher--KPP-type. We prove that if the kernel of the nonlocal diffusion is exponentially integrable in a direction and if the initial condition decays in this direction faster than any exponential function, then the solution propagates at most linearly in time in that direction. Moreover, if both the kernel and the initial condition have the above properties in any direction (being, in general, anis…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with nonlocal anisotropic diffusion and a linear combination of local and nonlocal monostable-type reactions in a space of bounded functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Using the properties of the corresponding semiflow, we prove the existence of monotone traveling waves along those directions where the diffusion kernel is exponentially integrable. Among other properties, we prove continuity, strict monotonicity and exponential integrability of the traveling wave profiles.
We study a class of nonlocal, energy-driven dynamical models that govern the motion of closed, embedded curves from both an energetic and dynamical perspective. Our energetic results provide a variety of ways to understand physically motivated energetic models in terms of more classical, combinatorial measures of complexity for embedded curves. This line of investigation culminates in a family of complexity bounds that relate a rather broad class of models to a generalized, or weighted, variant of the crossing number. Our dynamic results include global well-posedness of the associated partial …
We advance a variational method to prove qualitative properties such as symmetries, monotonicity, upper and lower bounds, sign properties, and comparison principles for a large class of doubly-nonlinear evolutionary problems including gradient flows, some nonlocal problems, and systems of nonlinear parabolic equations. Our method is based on the so-called Weighted-Energy-Dissipation (WED) variational approach. This consists in defining a global parameter-dependent functional over entire trajectories and proving that its minimizers converge to solutions to the target problem as the parameter go…
The inclusion of cognitive processes, such as perception, learning and memory, are inevitable in mechanistic animal movement modelling. Cognition is the unique feature that distinguishes animal movement from mere particle movement in chemistry or physics. Hence, it is essential to incorporate such knowledge-based processes into animal movement models. Here, we summarize popular deterministic mathematical models derived from first principles that begin to incorporate such influences on movement behaviour mechanisms. Most generally, these models take the form of nonlocal reaction-diffusion-advec…
Radial symmetry and sharp asymptotic behaviors of nonnegative solutions to weighted doubly $D^{1,p}$-critical quasi-linear nonlocal elliptic equations with Hardy potential
We prove the existence, qualitative properties and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to the doubly critical problem $$ (-Δ)^s u=\vartheta\frac{u}{|x|^{2s}}+u^{2_s^*-1}, \quad u\in \dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^N).$$ The technique that we use to prove the existence is based on variational arguments. The qualitative properties are obtained by using of the moving plane method, in a nonlocal setting, on the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ and by some comparison results. Moreover, in order to find the asymptotic behavior of solutions, we use a representation result that allows to transform the original problem…
In this paper we study nonlocal equations driven by the fractional powers of hypoelliptic operators in the form $$\mathscr K u = \mathscr A u - \partial_t u \overset{def}{=} \operatorname{tr}(Q \nabla^2 u) + <BX,\nabla u> - \partial_t u,$$ introduced by Hörmander in his 1967 hypoellipticity paper. We show that the nonlocal operators $(-\mathscr K)^s$ and $(-\mathscr A)^s$ can be realized as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of doubly-degenerate extension problems. We solve such problems in $L^\infty$, and in $L^p$ for $1\leq p<\infty$ when $\operatorname{tr}(B)\geq 0$. In forthcoming works we use s…
In this article, we focus on a doubly nonlinear nonlocal parabolic initial boundary value problem driven by the fractional $p$-Laplacian equipped with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and composed with a continuous, strictly increasing function. We establish well-posedness in $L^1$ in the sense of mild solutions, a comparison principle, and for restricted initial data we obtain that mild solutions of the inhomogeneous evolution problem are strong. We obtain $L^{q}$-$L^{\infty}$ regularity estimates for mild solutions, implying decay estimates and extend…
We consider the evolution of sets by nonlocal mean curvature and we discuss the preservation along the flow of two geometric properties, which are the mean convexity and the outward minimality. The main tools in our analysis are the level set formulation and the minimizing movement scheme for the nonlocal flow. When the initial set is outward minimizing, we also show the convergence of the (time integrated) nonlocal perimeters of the discrete evolutions to the nonlocal perimeter of the limit flow.
We extend the theory of viscosity solutions to treat scalar-valued doubly-nonlinear evolution equations. Such equations arise naturally in many mechanical models including a dry friction. After providing a suitable definition for discontinuous viscosity solutions in this setting, we show that Perron's construction is still available, i.e., we prove an existence result. Moreover, we will prove comparison principles and stability results for these problems. The theoretical considerations are accompanied by several examples, e.g., we prove the existence of a solution to a rate-independent level-s…
In this paper, we propose a novel free boundary problem to model the movement of single species with a range boundary. The spatial movement and birth/death processes of the species found within the range boundary are assumed to be governed by the classic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, while the movement of a free boundary describing the range limit is assumed to be influenced by the weighted total population inside the range boundary and is described by an integro-differential equation. Our free boundary equation is a generalization of the classical Stefan problem that allows for nonl…
For a diblock copolymer with total chain length $γ>0$ and mass ratio $m\in(-1,1)$, we consider the problem of minimizing the doubly nonlocal free energy $$ \mathcal{E}_{\varepsilon}(u) =\mathcal{H}(u) +\frac{1}{\varepsilon^{2s}} \int_ΩW(u)\,dx +\frac{1}{2}\int_Ω \left|(-γ^{2}Δ)^{-\frac{1}{2}}(u-m)\right|^2\,dx $$ in a domain $Ω$, where $\mathcal{H}(u)$ is a fractional $H^s$-norm with $s\in(0,\frac12)$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. This arises in the study of micro-phase separation phenomena for diblock copolymers with nonlocal diffusions. On the unit interval, we identify the $Γ$-limit …
This paper is devoted to the justification of the macroscopic, mean-field nutrient taxis system with doubly degenerate cross-diffusion proposed by Leyva et al. (2013) to model the complex spatio-temporal dynamics exhibited by the bacterium B. subtilis during experiments run in vitro. This justification is based on a microscopic description of the movement of individual cells whose changes in velocity (in both speed and orientation) obey a velocity jump process (Othmer, Dunbar, Alt, 1988), governed by a transport equation of Boltzmann type. For that purpose, the asymptotic method introduced by …
We present a nonlinear predator-prey system consisting of a nonlocal conservation law for predators coupled with a parabolic equation for preys. The drift term in the predators' equation is a nonlocal function of the prey density, so that the movement of predators can be directed towards region with high prey density. Moreover, Lotka-Volterra type right hand sides describe the feeding. A theorem ensuring existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence of weak solutions and various stability estimates is proved, in any space dimension. Numerical integrations show a few qualitative features of the …
A thin and narrow rectangular plate having the two short edges hinged and the two long edges free is considered. A nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation describing the deformation of the plate is introduced: well-posedness and existence of periodic solutions are proved. The natural phase space is a particular second order Sobolev space that can be orthogonally split into two subspaces containing, respectively, the longitudinal and the torsional movements of the plate. Sufficient conditions for the stability of periodic solutions and of solutions having only a longitudinal component are given. …
In this article we study the existence of weak solution, existence of ground state solution using Nehari manifold and existence of infinitely many solutions using Fountain theorem and Dual fountain theorem for a class of doubly nonlocal Kirchhoff-Choquard type equations involving the variable-order fractional $p(\cdot)-$ Laplacian operator. Here the nonlinearity does not satisfy the well known Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type condition.
We prove global-in-time existence and uniqueness of measure solutions of a nonlocal interaction system of two species in one spatial dimension. For initial data including atomic parts we provide a notion of gradient-flow solutions in terms of the pseudo-inverses of the corresponding cumulative distribution functions, for which the system can be stated as a gradient flow on the Hilbert space $L^2(0,1)^2$ according to the classical theory by Brézis. For absolutely continuous initial data we construct solutions using a minimising movement scheme in the set of probability measures. In addition we …
In this paper, we are concerned with the following Schrödinger-Poisson system with critical nonlinearity and critical nonlocal term due to the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality \begin{equation}\begin{cases} -Δu+u+λϕ|u|^3u =|u|^4u+ |u|^{q-2}u,\ \ &\ x \in \mathbb{R}^{3},\\[2mm] -Δϕ=|u|^5, \ \ &\ x \in \mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ is a parameter and $q\in(2,6)$. If $λ\ge (\frac{q+2}{8})^2$ and $q\in(2,6)$, the above system has no nontrivial solution. If $λ\in (λ^*,0)$ for some $λ^*<0$, we obtain a least energy radial sign-changing solution $u_λ$ to the abo…
We prove existence of a solution for a polymer crystal growth model describing the movement of a front $(Γ(t))$ evolving with a nonlocal velocity. In this model the nonlocal velocity is linked to the solution of a heat equation with source $δ_Γ$. The proof relies on new regularity results for the eikonal equation, in which the velocity is positive but merely measurable in time and with Hölder bounds in space. From this result, we deduce \textit{a priori} regularity for the front. On the other hand, under this regularity assumption, we prove bounds and regularity estimates for the solution of t…
This paper aims at building a unified framework to deal with a wide class of local and nonlocal translation-invariant geometric flows. First, we introduce a class of generalized curvatures, and prove the existence and uniqueness for the level set formulation of the corresponding geometric flows. We then introduce a class of generalized perimeters, whose first variation is an admissible generalized curvature. Within this class, we implement a minimizing movements scheme and we prove that it approximates the viscosity solution of the corresponding level set PDE. We also describe several examples…
In this paper we prove the uniqueness of the saddle-shaped solution to the semilinear nonlocal elliptic equation $(-Δ)^γu = f(u)$ in $\mathbb R^{2m}$, where $γ\in (0,1)$ and $f$ is of Allen-Cahn type. Moreover, we prove that this solution is stable whenever $2m\geq 14$. As a consequence of this result and the connection of the problem with nonlocal minimal surfaces, we show that the Simons cone $\{(x', x'') \in \mathbb R^{m}\times \mathbb R^m \ : \ |x'| = |x''|\}$ is a stable nonlocal $(2γ)$-minimal surface in dimensions $2m\geq 14$. Saddle-shaped solutions of the fractional Allen-Cahn equatio…
