We extend the theory of viscosity solutions to treat scalar-valued doubly-nonlinear evolution equations. Such equations arise naturally in many mechanical models including a dry friction. After providing a suitable definition for discontinuous viscosity solutions in this setting, we show that Perron's construction is still available, i.e., we prove an existence result. Moreover, we will prove comparison principles and stability results for these problems. The theoretical considerations are accompanied by several examples, e.g., we prove the existence of a solution to a rate-independent level-set mean curvature flow. Finally, we discuss in detail a rate-independent ordinary differential equation stemming from a problem with non-convex energy. We show that the solution obtained by maximal minimizing movements and the solution obtained by the vanishing viscosity method coincide with the upper and lower Perron solutions and show the emergence of a rate-independent hysteresis loop.
We study asymptotic decay rates of viscosity solutions to some doubly nonlinear parabolic equations, including Trudinger's equation. We also prove a Phragmén-Lindelöf type result and show its optimality.
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties for viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear parabolic equations of the type $H(Du, D^2u+Z(u)Du\otimes Du)+χ(t)|Du|^σ-u_t=0$ under a certain boundedness condition on $H$. We also state results for positive solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear equation $H(Du, D^2u)-f(u)u_t=0$.
We study a version of the strong minimum principle, and large time asymptotics of positive viscosity solutions to classes of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations of the form $$ H(Du,D^2u)-u^{k-1}u_t=0,\;\;k\geq 1,\quad\mbox{in $Ω\times [0,T)$},$$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded domain and $0<T\leq \infty$. The spatial operator $H$ is homogeneous with power $k$.
In this paper we discuss a family of viscous Cahn-Hilliard equations with a non-smooth viscosity term. This system may be viewed as an approximation of a "forward-backward" parabolic equation. The resulting problem is highly nonlinear, coupling in the same equation two nonlinearities with the diffusion term. In particular, we prove existence of solutions for the related initial and boundary value problem. Under suitable assumptions, we also state uniqueness and continuous dependence on data.
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties of viscosity solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,T)$. We also include an application to some doubly nonlinear equations.
The nonlinear and nonlocal PDE $$ |v_t|^{p-2}v_t+(-Δ_p)^sv=0 \, , $$ where $$ (-Δ_p)^s v\, (x,t)=2 \,\text{PV} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|v(x,t)-v(x+y,t)|^{p-2}(v(x,t)-v(x+y,t))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy, $$ has the interesting feature that an associated Rayleigh quotient is non-increasing in time along solutions. We prove the existence of a weak solution of the corresponding initial value problem which is also unique as a viscosity solution. Moreover, we provide Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions and relate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the eigenvalue problem for the fractional $p$-Lap…
We study the doubly nonlinear PDE $$ |\partial_t u|^{p-2}\,\partial_t u-\textrm{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0. $$ This equation arises in the study of extremals of Poincaré inequalities in Sobolev spaces. We prove spatial Lipschitz continuity and Hölder continuity in time of order $(p-1)/p$ for viscosity solutions. As an application of our estimates, we obtain pointwise control of the large time behavior of solutions.
We present a stability result for a wide class doubly nonlinear equations, featuring general maximal monotone operators, and (possibly) nonconvex and nonsmooth energy functionals. The limit analysis resides on the reformulation of the differential evolution as a scalar energy-conservation equation with the aid of the so-called Fitzpatrick theory for the representation of monotone operators. In particular, our result applies to the vanishing viscosity approximation of rate-independent systems.
We establish Harnack's estimates for positive weak solutions to a mixed local and nonlocal doubly nonlinear parabolic equation. All results presented in this paper are provided together with quantitative estimates.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the doubly nonlinear parabolic systems with mixed boundary conditions. Due to the unilateral constraint the problem comes as a variational inequality. We apply the penalty method and Gronwall's technique to prove the existence and uniqueness of the variational solution.
An analytic solution to a stationary heat conduction problem in 2D unbounded doubly periodic composite materials with temperature dependent conductivities of their components is given. Corresponding nonlinear boundary value problem is reduced a Laplace equation with nonlinear transmission conditions. For special relationships between the conductivity coefficients of the matrix and inclusions, the problem is transformed to fully linear boundary value problem for doubly periodic analytic functions. This allows to reconstruct the solution of the originally nonlinear composite and to find its effe…
We give a proof of the Hölder continuity of weak solutions of certain degenerate doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in measure spaces. We only assume the measure to be a doubling non-trivial Borel measure which supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof discriminates between large scales, for which a Harnack inequality is used, and small scales, that require intrinsic scaling methods.
The theory of elliptic equations involving singular nonlinearities is well studied topic but the interaction of singular type nonlinearity with nonlocal nonlinearity in elliptic problems has not been investigated so far. In this article, we study the very singular and doubly nonlocal singular problem $(P_λ)$(See below). Firstly, we establish a very weak comparison principle and the optimal Sobolev regularity. Next using the critical point theory of non-smooth analysis and the geometry of the energy functional, we establish the global multiplicity of positive weak solutions.
We establish the local Hölder continuity for the nonnegative weak solutions of certain doubly nonlinear parabolic equations possessing a singularity in the time derivative part and a degeneracy in the principal part. The proof involves the method of intrinsic scaling and the setting is a measure space equipped with a doubling non-trivial Borel measure supporting a Poincaré inequality.
We establish a local boundedness estimate for weak subsolutions to a doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equation. Our argument relies on energy estimates and a parabolic nonlocal version of De Giorgi's method. Furthermore, by means of a new algebraic inequality, we show that positive weak supersolutions satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality. Finally, we also prove a logarithmic decay estimate for positive supersolutions.
We investigate the existence of ground states at prescribed mass on general metric graphs with half-lines for focusing doubly nonlinear Schrödinger equations involving both a standard power nonlinearity and delta nonlinearities located at the vertices. The problem is proved to be sensitive both to the topology and to the metric of the graph and to exhibit a phenomenology richer than in the case of the sole standard nonlinearity considered in [Adami et al. '15, Adami et al. '16]. On the one hand, we provide a complete topological characterization of the problem, identifying various topological …
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
Consider nonlinear Choquard equations \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{rcl} -Δu +u & = &(I_α*F(u))F'(u) \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^N, \\ \lim_{x \to \infty}u(x) & = &0, \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $I_α$ denotes Riesz potential and $α\in (0, N)$. In this paper, we show that when $F$ is doubly critical, i.e. $F(u) = \frac{N}{N+α}|u|^{\frac{N+α}{N}}+\frac{N-2}{N+α}|u|^{\frac{N+α}{N-2}}$, the nonlinear Choquard equation admits a nontrivial solution if $N \geq 5$ and $α+ 4 < N$.
We establish the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad 1<p<2,\quad 0<p-1<q. \] The proof exploits the space expansion of positivity for the singular, parabolic $p$-Laplacian and employs the method of intrinsic scaling by carefully balancing the double singularity.
We demonstrate two proofs for the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad p>2,\quad 0<q<p-1. \] The first proof takes advantage of the expansion of positivity for the degenerate, parabolic $p$-Laplacian, thus simplifying the argument; whereas the other proof relies solely on the energy estimates for the doubly nonlinear parabolic equations. After proper adaptions of the interior arguments, we also obtain the boundary regularity for initial-boundary value pro…
In this paper we analyze a broad class of abstract doubly nonlinear evolution equations in Banach spaces, driven by nonsmooth and nonconvex energies. We provide some general sufficient conditions, on the dissipation potential and the energy functional, for existence of solutions to the related Cauchy problem. We prove our main existence result by passing to the limit in a time-discretization scheme with variational techniques. Finally, we discuss an application to a material model in finite-strain elasticity.
This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of the solution to a doubly nonlinear parabolic problem which arises directly from a circuit model of microwave heating. Beyond the relevance from a physical point of view, the problem is very interesting also in a mathematical approach: in fact, it consists of a nonlinear partial differential equation with a further nonlinearity in the boundary condition. Actually, we are going to prove a general result: the two nonlinearities are allowed to be maximal monotone operators and then an existence result will be shown for the resulting prob…
We study the generalized Forchheimer flows of slightly compressible fluids in rotating porous media. In the problem's model, the varying density in the Coriolis force is fully accounted for without any simplifications. It results in a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the density. We derive a priori estimates for the solutions in terms of the initial, boundary data and physical parameters, emphasizing on the case of unbounded data. Weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities suitable to the equation's nonlinearity, adapted Moser's iteration and maximum principle are used and combined to obtai…
We study the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the doubly nonlinear equation $u_t = Δ_p u^m$, where $p>1,\ m>0$ posed in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with homogeneous boundary conditions and with non-negative and integrable data. In this paper we consider the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$ and the quasilinear case $m(p-1)=1$. We establish the large-time behaviour by proving the uniform convergence to a unique asymptotic profile and we also give rates for this convergence.
In this paper we prove the Hölder regularity of bounded, uniformly continuous, viscosity solutions of some degenerate fully nonlinear equations in the Heisenberg group.
This paper is focused on the generalized Forchheimer flows of compressible fluids in porous media. The gravity effect and other general nonlinear forms of the source terms and boundary fluxes are integrated into the model. It covers isentropic gas flows, ideal gases and slightly compressible fluids. We derive a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the so-called pseudo-pressure, and study the corresponding initial boundary value problem. The maximum estimates of the solution are established by using suitable trace theorem and adapting appropriately the Moser's iteration. The gradient estimat…
We study solutions ${\bf v}$ of the parabolic system of PDE $$ \partial_t\left(Dψ({\bf v})\right)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v}). $$ Here $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions, and this is a model equation for more general doubly nonlinear evolutions that arise in the study of phase transitions in materials. We show that if ${\bf v}$ is a weak solution, then $D{\bf v}$ is locally Hölder continuous except for possibly on a lower dimensional subset of the domain of ${\bf v}$. Our proof is based on compactness properties of solutions, two integral identities and a fractional time derivative estimate for $D{\b…
We are concerned with the time-periodic problem of some doubly nonlinear equations governed by differentials of two convex functionals over uniformly convex Banach spaces. Akagi--Stefanelli (2011) considered Cauchy problem of the same equation via the so-called WED functional approach. Main purpose of this paper is to show the existence of the time-periodic solution under the same growth conditions on functionals and differentials as those imposed in Akagi--Stefanelli (2011). Because of the difference of nature between Cauchy problem and the periodic problem, we can not apply the WED functiona…
We study weak solutions ${\bf v}:U\times (0,T)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m$ of the nonlinear parabolic system $$ Dψ({\bf v}_t)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v}), $$ where $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions. This is a prototype for more general doubly nonlinear evolutions which arise in the study of structural properties of materials. Under the assumption that the second derivatives of $F$ are Hölder continuous, we show that $D^2{\bf v}$ and ${\bf v}_t$ are locally Hölder continuous except for possibly on a lower dimensional subset of $U\times (0,T)$. Our approach relies on two integral identities, decay of the…
We present a new stability result for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic equations which allows to pass to the limit when one has only weak convergence in time of the nonlinearities.
We prove Hölder continuous regularity of bounded, uniformly continuous, viscosity solutions of degenerate fully nonlinear equations defined in all of $\mathbb{R}^n$ space. In particular the result applies also to some operators in Carnot groups.
In this paper we deal with a doubly nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard system, where both an internal constraint on the time derivative of the concentration and a potential for the concentration are introduced. The definition of the chemical potential includes two regularizations: a viscosity and a diffusive term. First of all, we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution to the system using a nonstandard maximum-principle argument for time-discretizations of doubly nonlinear equations. Possibly including singular potentials, this novel result brings improvements over previous approaches to th…

We study solutions of the system of PDE $Dψ({\bf v}_t)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v})$, where $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions. This type of system arises in various physical models for phase transitions. We establish compactness properties of solutions that allow us to verify partial regularity when $F$ is quadratic and characterize the large time limits of weak solutions. Special consideration is also given to systems that are homogeneous and their connections with nonlinear eigenvalue problems. While the uniqueness of weak solutions of such systems of PDE remains an open problem, we show scalar equ…
We advance a variational method to prove qualitative properties such as symmetries, monotonicity, upper and lower bounds, sign properties, and comparison principles for a large class of doubly-nonlinear evolutionary problems including gradient flows, some nonlocal problems, and systems of nonlinear parabolic equations. Our method is based on the so-called Weighted-Energy-Dissipation (WED) variational approach. This consists in defining a global parameter-dependent functional over entire trajectories and proving that its minimizers converge to solutions to the target problem as the parameter go…
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
We prove existence of variational solutions for a class of doubly nonlinear nonlocal evolution equations whose prototype is the double phase equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u^m &+ \text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{p-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+ps}}\\&+a(x,y)\frac{|u(x,t)-u(y,t)|^{q-2}(u(x,t)-u(y,t))}{|x-y|^{N+qr}} \,dy = 0,\,m>0,\,p>1,\,s,r\in (0,1). \end{align*} We make use of the approach of minimizing movements pioneered by DeGiorgi and Ambrosio and refined by Bögelein, Duzaar, Marcellini, and co-authors to study nonlinear parabolic equations with non-standard growth.
We study the long-time asymptotics of the doubly nonlinear diffusion equation $ρ_t={div}({|\nablaρ^m|^{p-2}\nablaρ^m})$ in $\RR^n$, in the range $\frac{n-p}{n(p-1)}<m>\frac{n-p+1}{n(p-1)}$ and $1p\infty$ where the mass of the solution is conserved, but the associated energy functional is not displacement convex. Using a linearisation of the equation, we prove an $L^1$-algebraic decay of the non-negative solution to a Barenblatt-type solution, and we estimate its rate of convergence. We then derive the nonlinear stability of the solution by means of some comparison method between the nonlinear …
