We study solutions of the system of PDE $Dψ({\bf v}_t)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v})$, where $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions. This type of system arises in various physical models for phase transitions. We establish compactness properties of solutions that allow us to verify partial regularity when $F$ is quadratic and characterize the large time limits of weak solutions. Special consideration is also given to systems that are homogeneous and their connections with nonlinear eigenvalue problems. While the uniqueness of weak solutions of such systems of PDE remains an open problem, we show scalar equations always have a preferred solution that is also unique as a viscosity solution.
In order to have a better description of homogenization for parabolic partial differential equations with periodic coefficients, we define the notion of parametric two-scale convergence. A compactness theorem is proved to justify this notion.
We establish Harnack's estimates for positive weak solutions to a mixed local and nonlocal doubly nonlinear parabolic equation. All results presented in this paper are provided together with quantitative estimates.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the doubly nonlinear parabolic systems with mixed boundary conditions. Due to the unilateral constraint the problem comes as a variational inequality. We apply the penalty method and Gronwall's technique to prove the existence and uniqueness of the variational solution.
We study asymptotic decay rates of viscosity solutions to some doubly nonlinear parabolic equations, including Trudinger's equation. We also prove a Phragmén-Lindelöf type result and show its optimality.
We establish weak Harnack inequalities for positive, weak supersolutions to certain doubly degenerate parabolic equations. The prototype of this kind of equations is $$\partial_tu-\operatorname{div}|u|^{m-1}|Du|^{p-2}Du=0,\quad p>2,\quad m+p>3.$$ Our proof is based on Caccioppoli inequalities, De Giorgi's estimates and Moser's iterative method.
This paper studies a fourth-order, nonlinear, doubly-degenerate parabolic equation derived from the thin film equation in spherical geometry. A regularization method is used to study the equation and several useful estimates are obtained. The main result of this paper is to prove the existence of a weak solution of the equation in a weighted Sobolev space.
We establish a local boundedness estimate for weak subsolutions to a doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equation. Our argument relies on energy estimates and a parabolic nonlocal version of De Giorgi's method. Furthermore, by means of a new algebraic inequality, we show that positive weak supersolutions satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality. Finally, we also prove a logarithmic decay estimate for positive supersolutions.
We give a proof of the Hölder continuity of weak solutions of certain degenerate doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in measure spaces. We only assume the measure to be a doubling non-trivial Borel measure which supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof discriminates between large scales, for which a Harnack inequality is used, and small scales, that require intrinsic scaling methods.
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties for viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear parabolic equations of the type $H(Du, D^2u+Z(u)Du\otimes Du)+χ(t)|Du|^σ-u_t=0$ under a certain boundedness condition on $H$. We also state results for positive solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear equation $H(Du, D^2u)-f(u)u_t=0$.
We establish the local Hölder continuity for the nonnegative weak solutions of certain doubly nonlinear parabolic equations possessing a singularity in the time derivative part and a degeneracy in the principal part. The proof involves the method of intrinsic scaling and the setting is a measure space equipped with a doubling non-trivial Borel measure supporting a Poincaré inequality.
Regimes with a singular peaking for a wide class of quasilinear second order parabolic equations are studied. On the basis of energy methods, precise estimates of a final profile of a weak solution in a neighborhood of the peaking time are established depending on the rate of increase of a global energy of this solution. Key words: quasilinear parabolic equations, peaking regimes, energy solutions.
This paper considers a certain doubly singular parabolic equations with one singularity occurs in the time derivative, whose model is \begin{equation*} \partial_tβ(u)-\operatorname{div}|Du|^{p-2}Du\ni0,\qquad \text{in}\quad Ω\times(0,T)\end{equation*} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ and $N\geq3$. We show that the bounded weak solutions are locally continuous in the range $$2-ε_0\leq p<2,$$ provided $ε_0>0$ is small enough, and the continuity is stable as $p\to2$.
We study a version of the strong minimum principle, and large time asymptotics of positive viscosity solutions to classes of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations of the form $$ H(Du,D^2u)-u^{k-1}u_t=0,\;\;k\geq 1,\quad\mbox{in $Ω\times [0,T)$},$$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded domain and $0<T\leq \infty$. The spatial operator $H$ is homogeneous with power $k$.
We consider a class of second order linear nonautonomous parabolic equations in R^d with time periodic unbounded coefficients. We give sufficient conditions for the evolution operator G(t,s) be compact in C_b(R^d) for t>s, and describe the asymptotic behavior of G(t,s)f as t-s goes to infinity in terms of a family of measures mu_s, s in R, solution of the associated Fokker-Planck equation.
We discuss pointwise behavior of weak supersolutions for a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations which includes the fractional parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the fractional porous medium equation. More precisely, we show that weak supersolutions have lower semicontinuous representative. We also prove that the semicontinuous representative at an instant of time is determined by the values at previous times. This gives a pointwise interpretation for a weak supersolution at every point. The corresponding results hold true also for weak subsolutions. Our results …
We study solutions ${\bf v}$ of the parabolic system of PDE $$ \partial_t\left(Dψ({\bf v})\right)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v}). $$ Here $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions, and this is a model equation for more general doubly nonlinear evolutions that arise in the study of phase transitions in materials. We show that if ${\bf v}$ is a weak solution, then $D{\bf v}$ is locally Hölder continuous except for possibly on a lower dimensional subset of the domain of ${\bf v}$. Our proof is based on compactness properties of solutions, two integral identities and a fractional time derivative estimate for $D{\b…
This paper is focused on the generalized Forchheimer flows of compressible fluids in porous media. The gravity effect and other general nonlinear forms of the source terms and boundary fluxes are integrated into the model. It covers isentropic gas flows, ideal gases and slightly compressible fluids. We derive a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the so-called pseudo-pressure, and study the corresponding initial boundary value problem. The maximum estimates of the solution are established by using suitable trace theorem and adapting appropriately the Moser's iteration. The gradient estimat…
We prove that local and global parabolic BMO spaces are equal thus extending the classical result of Reimann and Rychener. Moreover, we show that functions in parabolic BMO are exponentially integrable in a general class of space-time cylinders. As a corollary, we establish global integrability for positive supersolutions to a wide class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations.
We study weak solutions ${\bf v}:U\times (0,T)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m$ of the nonlinear parabolic system $$ Dψ({\bf v}_t)=\text{div}DF(D{\bf v}), $$ where $ψ$ and $F$ are convex functions. This is a prototype for more general doubly nonlinear evolutions which arise in the study of structural properties of materials. Under the assumption that the second derivatives of $F$ are Hölder continuous, we show that $D^2{\bf v}$ and ${\bf v}_t$ are locally Hölder continuous except for possibly on a lower dimensional subset of $U\times (0,T)$. Our approach relies on two integral identities, decay of the…
We study a doubly parabolic Keller-Segel system in one spatial dimension, with diffusions given by fractional laplacians. We obtain several local and global well-posedness results for the subcritical and critical cases (for the latter we need certain smallness assumptions). We also study dynamical properties of the system with added logistic term. Then, this model exhibits a spatio-temporal chaotic behavior, where a number of peaks emerge. In particular, we prove the existence of an attractor and provide an upper bound on the number of peaks that the solution may develop. Finally, we perform a…
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties of viscosity solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,T)$. We also include an application to some doubly nonlinear equations.
We demonstrate two proofs for the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad p>2,\quad 0<q<p-1. \] The first proof takes advantage of the expansion of positivity for the degenerate, parabolic $p$-Laplacian, thus simplifying the argument; whereas the other proof relies solely on the energy estimates for the doubly nonlinear parabolic equations. After proper adaptions of the interior arguments, we also obtain the boundary regularity for initial-boundary value pro…
In this manuscript we establish local Hölder regularity estimates for bounded solutions of a certain class of doubly degenerate evolution PDEs. By making use of intrinsic scaling techniques and geometric tangential methods, we derive sharp regularity estimates for such models, which depend only on universal and compatibility parameters of the problem. In such a scenario, our results are natural improvements for former ones in the context of nonlinear evolution PDEs with degenerate structure via a unified approach. As a consequence for our findings and approach, we address a Liouville type resu…
We establish new convergence results, in strong topologies, for solutions of the parabolic-parabolic Keller--Segel system in the plane, to the corresponding solutions of the parabolic-elliptic model, as a physical parameter goes to zero. Our main tools are suitable space-time estimates, implying the global existence of slowly decaying (in general, nonintegrable) solutions for these models, under a natural smallness assumption.
In this paper, we consider a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation $ \partial _t β(u) - \nabla \cdot α(x , \nabla u) \ni f$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded domain, where $β: \mathbb{R} \to 2 ^{ \mathbb{R} }$ is a maximal monotone graph satisfying $0 \in β(0)$ and $ \nabla \cdot α(x , \nabla u )$ stands for a generalized $p$-Laplacian. Existence of solution to the initial boundary value problem of this equation has been investigated in an enormous number of papers for the case where single-valuedness, coerciveness, or some growth condition is imposed on $β$. However…
This paper is devoted to the justification of the macroscopic, mean-field nutrient taxis system with doubly degenerate cross-diffusion proposed by Leyva et al. (2013) to model the complex spatio-temporal dynamics exhibited by the bacterium B. subtilis during experiments run in vitro. This justification is based on a microscopic description of the movement of individual cells whose changes in velocity (in both speed and orientation) obey a velocity jump process (Othmer, Dunbar, Alt, 1988), governed by a transport equation of Boltzmann type. For that purpose, the asymptotic method introduced by …
We study the stability of compactness of solutions for the Yamabe boundary problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with non umbilic boundary. We prove that the set of solutions of Yamabe boundary problem is a compact set when perturbing the mean curvature of the boundary from below and the scalar curvature with a function whose maximum is not too positive. In addition, we prove the counterpart of the stability result: there exists a blowing up sequence of solutions when we perturb the mean curvature from above or the mean curvature from below and the scalar curvature with a function with a la…
We study the behaviour of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic problems when the data are perturbed. The class includes the Richards equation, Stefan problem and the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. We show that, up to a subsequence, weak solutions of the perturbed problem converge uniformly-in-time to weak solutions of the original problem as the perturbed data approach the original data. We do not assume uniqueness or additional regularity of the solution. However, when uniqueness is known, our result demonstrates that the weak solution is uniformly temporally stable to pert…
We establish the local Hölder continuity of possibly sign-changing solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations whose prototype is \[ \partial_t\big(|u|^{q-1}u\big)-Δ_p u=0,\quad 1<p<2,\quad 0<p-1<q. \] The proof exploits the space expansion of positivity for the singular, parabolic $p$-Laplacian and employs the method of intrinsic scaling by carefully balancing the double singularity.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with umbilic boundary, the Yamabe boundary problem studies if there exist conformal scalar-flat metrics such that the boundary has constant mean curvature. In this paper we address to the stability of this problem with respect of perturbation of mean curvature of the boundary and scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular we prove that the Yamabe boundary problem is stable under perturbation of the mean curvature and the scalar curvature from below, while it is not stable if one of the two curvatures is perturbed from above.
We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to quasilinear doubly degenerate parabolic problems of fourth order. The equations model for instance the dynamic behaviour of a non-Newtonian thin-film flow on a flat impermeable bottom and with zero contact angle. We consider a shear-rate dependent fluid the rheology of which is described by a constitutive power-law or Ellis-law for the fluid viscosity. In all three cases, positive constants (i.e. positive flat films) are the only positive steady-state solutions. Moreover, we can give a detailed picture of the long-time behaviour of solutions wit…
This paper is concerned with pullback attractors of the stochastic p-Laplace equation defined on the entire space R^n. We first establish the asymptotic compactness of the equation in L^2(R^n) and then prove the existence and uniqueness of non-autonomous random attractors. This attractor is pathwise periodic if the non-autonomous deterministic forcing is time periodic. The difficulty of non-compactness of Sobolev embeddings on R^n is overcome by the uniform smallness of solutions outside a bounded domain.
