In his book on Convex Polyhedra (section 7.2), A.D. Aleksandrov raised a general question of finding variational statements and proofs of existence of polytopes with given geometric data. The first goal of this paper is to give a variational solution to the problem of existence and uniqueness of a closed convex hypersurface in Euclidean space with prescribed integral Gauss curvature. Our solution includes the case of a convex polytope. This problem was also first considered by Aleksandrov and below it is referred to as Aleksandrov's problem. The second goal of this paper is to show that in variational form the Aleksandrov problem is closely connected with the theory of optimal mass transport on a sphere with cost function and constraints arising naturally from geometric considerations.
The paper uses the technique of finite-dimensional approximation to show that a constant scalr curvature Kahler metric (on a polarised algebraic variety without holomorphic vector fields) minimises the Mabuchi functional.
J. Nash proved that the geometry of any Riemannian manifold M imposes no restrictions to be embedded isometrically into a (fixed) ball B_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}(1) of the Euclidean space R^N. However, the geometry of M appears, to some extent, imposing restrictions on the mean curvature vector of the embedding.
We show relation between sign of Gaussian curvature of cuspidal edge and geometric invariants through types of singularities of Gauss map. Moreover, we define and characterize positivity/negativity of cusps of Gauss maps by geometric invariants of cuspidal edges, and show relation between sign of cusps and of the Gaussian curvature.
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods and the spinorial Weierstraß representation, we study the problem of prescribing mean curvature for the immersion $S^2\to\mathbb{R}^3$.
We construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings into Euclidean space for manifolds and orbifolds of bounded diameter and curvature. The distortion and dimension of such embeddings is bounded by diameter, curvature and dimension alone. Our results also apply for bounded subsets of complete Riemannian manifolds, and complete flat and elliptic orbifolds. Our approach is based on analysing the structure of a bounded curvature manifold at various scales by specializing methods from collapsing theory to a certain class of model spaces.
We give an estimate of the Gauss curvature for minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^m$ whose Gauss map omits more than $m(m+1)/2$ hyperplanes in ${\mathbb P}^{m-1}({\mathbb C})$.
We study the problem of isometrically embedding a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold into Euclidean three-space. It is shown that if Gaussian curvature vanishes to finite order and its zero set consists of two smooth curves tangent at a point, then local sufficiently smooth isometric embedding exists.
The Gaussian curvature $K$ is a fundamental geometric quantity discovered by Gauss in the case of surfaces embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$. One can naturally extend the definition of the Gaussian curvature to arbitrary submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^k$ so that the extrinsic interpretation of $K$, the Theorema Egregium and the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem still hold. We give a concise exposition of these classical facts.
We study the old problem of isometrically embedding a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold into Euclidean 3-space. It is shown that if the Gaussian curvature vanishes to finite order and its zero set consists of two Lipschitz curves intersecting transversely at a point, then local sufficiently smooth isometric embeddings exist.
We investigate complete minimal hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $% \ {R}^{4}$, with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero. We prove that, if $f:M^{3}\to {R}^{4}$ is a complete minimal hypersurface with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero, nowhere vanishing second fundamental form and scalar curvature bounded from below, then $f(M^{3})$ splits as a Euclidean product $L^{2}\times {R}$, where $L^{2}$ is a complete minimal surface in $ {R}^{3}$ with Gaussian curvature bounded from below.
We present conditions on the Ricci curvature for complete, oriented, minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space, as well as the standard unit sphere, when the Gauss maps are bounded embeddings.
We show the uniqueness of strictly convex closed smooth self-similar solutions to the $α$-Gauss curvature flow with $(1/n) < α< 1+(1/n)$. We introduce a Pogorelov type computation, and then we apply the strong maximum principle. Our work combined with earlier works on the Gauss Curvature flow imply that the $α$-Gauss curvature flow with $(1/n) < α< 1+(1/n)$ shrinks a strictly convex closed smooth hypersurface to a round sphere.
We study rotational surfaces in Euclidean 3-space whose Gauss curvature is given as a prescribed function of its Gauss map. By means of a phase plane analysis and under mild assumptions on the prescribed function, we generalize the classification of rotational surfaces of constant Gauss curvature; exhibit examples that cannot exist in the constant Gauss curvature case; and analyze the asymptotic behavior of strictly convex graphs. We also prove the existence of singular radial solutions intersecting orthogonally the axis of rotation.
In this paper we present a local description for complete minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^5$ with zero Gauss-Kronecker curvature, zero $3$-mean curvature and nowhere zero second fundamental form.
Compact flat surfaces of homogeneous Riemannian 3-manifolds with isometry group of dimension 4 are classified. Non-existence results for compact constant Gauss curvature surfaces in these 3-manifolds are established.
In this paper, we investigate the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow. A Ricci-mean curvature flow is a coupled equation of a mean curvature flow and a Ricci flow on the ambient manifold. Ruh and Vilms proved that the Gauss map of a minimal submanifold in a Euclidean space is a harmonic map, and Wang extended this result to a mean curvature flow in a Euclidean space by proving its Gauss maps satisfy the harmonic map heat flow equation. In this paper, we deduce the evolution equation for the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow, and as a direct corollary we prove that the Gauss maps …
We study the mean curvature flow of complete space-like submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean space with bounded Gauss image, as well as that of complete submanifolds in Euclidean space with convex Gauss image. By using the confinable property of the Gauss image under the mean curvature flow we prove the long time existence results in both cases. We also study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when $t\to\infty$.
We study rotational hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature. We solve the ODE for the generating curves of such hypersurfaces and analyze several geometric properties of such hypersurfaces. In particular, we discover a class of non-compact rotational hypersurfaces with constant and negative Gauss-Kronecker curvature and finite volume, which can be seen as the higher-dimensional generalization of the pseudo-sphere. Finally we investigate other types of rotational hypersurfaces with similar curvature constraints, including those with prescribed Gauss-Kronecker curvature.
This note provides an alternative proof of a result of Labourie. We show that the two complements of the convex core of a three dimensional quasi-fuchsian hyperbolic manifold may be foliated by embedded hypersurfaces of constant Gaussian curvature.
Kodaira embedding theorem provides an effective characterization of projectivity of a Kähler manifold in terms the second cohomology. Recently X. Yang [21] proved that any compact Kähler manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature must be projective. This gives a metric criterion of the projectivity in terms of its curvature. In this note, we prove that any compact Kähler manifold with positive 2nd scalar curvature (which is the average of holomorphic sectional curvature over 2-dimensional subspaces of the tangent space) must be projective. In view of generic 2-tori being non-abelia…
By means of dual convex bodies, we obtain regularity of solutions to the expanding Gauss curvature flows with homogeneity degrees $-p$, $0<p<1$. At the end, we remark that our method can also be used to obtain regularity of solutions to the shrinking Gauss curvature flows with homogeneity degrees less than one.
We study the evolution of convex complete non-compact graphs by positive powers of Gauss curvature. We show that if the initial complete graph has a local uniform convexity, then the graph evolves by any positive power of Gauss curvature for all time. In particular, the initial graph is not necessarily differentiable.
We verify if Gausssian curvature of surfaces and normal curvature of curves in surfaces introduced by Diniz-Veloso arXiv:1210.7110 and by Balogh-Tyson-Vecchi arXiv:1604.00180 to prove Gauss-Bonnet theorems in Heisenberg space $\mathbb H^1$ are equal. The authors in arXiv:1604.00180 utilize a limit of Gaussian and normal curvatures defined in the Riemannian approximations scheme $(\mathbb R^3,g_L)$ introduced by Gromov to study sub-Riemannian spaces. They show that these limits exist (unlike the limit of Riemannian surface area form or length form), and they obtain Gauss-Bonnet theorem in $\mat…
We give a full classification of complete rotationally invariant surfaces with constant Gauss curvature in Berger spheres: they are either Clifford tori, which are flat, or spheres of Gauss curvature $K \geq K_0$ for a positive constant $K_0$, which we determine explicitly and depends on the geometry of the ambient Berger sphere. For values of $K_0 \leq K \leq K_P$, for a specific constant $K_P$, it was not known until now whether complete constant Gauss curvature $K$ surfaces existed in Berger spheres, so our classification provides the first examples. For $K > K_P$, we prove that the rotatio…
In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
We develop a compactness result near the boundary for families of locally convex immersions. We also develop a mod 2 degree theory for immersion of constant (and prescribed) Gaussian curvature with prescribed boundary. These are then used to solve the Plateau problem for immersions of constant (and prescribed) Gaussian curvature in general Hadamard manifolds.
We consider flows with normal velocities equal to powers strictly larger than one of the Gauss curvature. Under such flows closed strictly convex surfaces converge to points. In his work on the square of the norm of the second fundamental form, Schnürer proposes criteria for selecting quantities that are suitable for proving convergence to a round point. Such monotone quantities exist for many normal velocities, including the Gauss curvature, some powers larger than one of the mean curvature, and some powers larger than one of the norm of the second fundamental form. In this paper, we show tha…
Using polar convex bodies and the $C_0$-bounds from Guan and Ni \cite{PL}, we obtain a uniform lower bound on the Gauss curvature of the normalized solution of the Gauss curvature flow without using Chow's Harnack inequality \cite{Ch2}.
We consider the evolution of a $n$-dimensional convex hypersurface in the euclidean space under mean curvature flow with densities $e^{\varepsilon \frac12 nμ^2 |x|^2}$, $\varepsilon =\pm 1$, and completely determine it depending on the relation between $μ$ and the upper or lower bound of the normal curvatures of the evolving hypersurface at time 0.
In this paper, we discuss the isometric embedding problem in hyperbolic space with nonnegative extrinsic curvature. We prove a priori bounds for the trace of the second fundamental form H and extend the result to n-dimensions. We also obtain an estimate for the gradient of the smaller principal curvature in 2 dimensions.
We study that the $n-$graphs defining by smooth map $f:\Om\subset \ir{n}\to \ir{m}, m\ge 2,$ in $\ir{m+n}$ of the prescribed mean curvature and the Gauss image. We derive the interior curvature estimates $$\sup_{D_R(x)}|B|^2\le\f{C}{R^2}$$ under the dimension limitations and the Gauss image restrictions. If there is no dimension limitation we obtain $$\sup_{D_R(x)}|B|^2\le C R^{-a}\sup_{D_{2R}(x)}(2-\De_f)^{-(\f{3}{2}+\f{1}{s})}, \qquad s=\min(m, n)$$ with $a<1$ under the condition $$\De_f=[\text{det}(\de_{ij}+\sum_\a\pd{f^\a}{x^i}\pd{f^\a}{x^j})]^{\f{1}{2}}<2.$$ If the image under the Gauss m…
We use a Riemannnian approximation scheme to define a notion of $\textit{sub-Riemannian Gaussian curvature}$ for a Euclidean $C^{2}$-smooth surface in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$ away from characteristic points, and a notion of $\textit{sub-Riemannian signed geodesic curvature}$ for Euclidean $C^{2}$-smooth curves on surfaces. These results are then used to prove a Heisenberg version of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. An application to Steiner's formula for the Carnot-Carathéodory distance in $\mathbb{H}$ is provided.
In this article, we propose some conditions on the modified defect relations of the Gauss map of a complete minimal surface $M$ to show that $M$ has finite total curvature.
The skew mean curvature flow (SMCF) is a natural generalization of the famous vortex filament equation. In this note, we show that the Gauss map of the SMCF satisfies a Schrödinger flow equation. In this regard, we explore the geometry of the oriented Grassmannian manifold explicitly by embedding it into the exterior product space.
We consider two natural problems arising in geometry which are equivalent to the local solvability of specific equations of Monge-Ampere type. These two problems are: the local isometric embedding problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and the problem of locally prescribed Gaussian curvature for surfaces in R^3. We prove a general local existence result for a large class of Monge-Ampere equations in the plane, and obtain as corollaries the existence of regular solutions to both problems, in the case that the Gaussian curvature vanishes to arbitrary finite order on a single smooth cu…
It is shown in the paper "Variational Properties of the Gauss-Bonnet Curvatures" of M.L. Labbi, that metrics with constant 2k-Gauss-Bonnet curvature on a closed n-dimensional manifold, 1<2k<n, are critical points for a certain Hilbert type functional with respect to volume preserving conformal variations. This motivates the corresponding Yamabe problem: is it true that any metric on a closed manifold is conformal to a metric with constant 2k-Gauss-Bonnet curvature? Using perturbative methods we affirmatively answer this question for small perturbations of certain space forms. More precisely, i…
In this work we find all helicoidal surfaces in Minkowski space with constant mean curvature whose generating curve is a the graph of a polynomial or a Lorentzian circle. In the first case, we prove that the degree of the polynomial is $0$ or $1$ and that the surface is ruled. If the generating curve is a Lorentzian circle, we show that the only possibility is that the axis is spacelike and the center of the circle lies in the axis.
We study asymptotic behavior of nonparametric hypersurfaces moving by $α$ powers of Gauss curvature $α> 1/n$. Our work generalizes the results of V. Oliker [Oli91] for $α= 1$.
We prove that convex hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ contracting under the flow by any power $α>\frac{1}{n+2}$ of the Gauss curvature converge (after rescaling to fixed volume) to a limit which is a smooth, uniformly convex self-similar contracting solution of the flow. Under additional central symmetry of the initial body we prove that the limit is the round sphere.
We prove existence and stability of smooth entire strictly convex spacelike hypersurfaces of prescribed Gauss curvature in Minkowski space. The proof is based on barrier constructions and local a priori estimates.
In this paper we prove uniform regularity estimates for the normalized Gauss curvature flow in higher dimensions. The convergence of solutions in $C^\infty$-topology to a smooth strictly convex soliton as $t$ approaches to infinity is obtained as a consequence of these estimates together with an earlier result of Andrews. The estimates are established via the study of a new entropy functional for the flow.
This paper defines two new extrinsic curvature quantities on the corner of a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold with corner. One of these is a pointwise conformal invariant, and the conformal transformation of the other is governed by a new linear second-order pointwise conformally invariant partial differential operator. The Gauss-Bonnet theorem is then stated in terms of these quantities.
We show that strictly convex surfaces expanding by the inverse Gauss curvature flow converge to infinity in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. We describe the algorithm to find our main test function.
