In this paper we will show that the generalized connected sum construction for constant scalar curvature metrics can be extended to the zero scalar curvature case. In particular we want to construct solutions to the Yamabe equation on the generalized connected sum M = M_1 (\sharp_K) M_2 of two compact Riemannian manifolds (M_1,g_1) and (M_2,g_2) with zero constant scalar curvature along a common (isometrically embedded) submanifold (K,g_K) of codimension \geq 3. We present here two kinds of construction. The first one is the basic model and it works for every couple of scalar flat manifolds, but it has a drawback. In fact following this method we are not allowed to choose a scalar flat metric on the generalized connected sum, although the error can be chosen as small as we want. The second construction is an adjustment of the first one which enable us to get a zero scalar curvature metric on the final manifold, but it require the hypothesis that the starting Riemannian manifolds are non Ricci flat.
Quandles can be regarded as generalizations of symmetric spaces. In the study of symmetric spaces, the notion of flatness plays an important role. In this paper, we define the notion of flat quandles, by referring to the theory of Riemannian symmetric spaces, and classify flat connected finite quandles.
We consider the problem of constructing solutions to the Yamabe equation (i.e. conformal constant scalar curvature metrics) on the generalized connected sum M = (M_1) #_K (M_2) of two compact Riemannian manifolds (M_1,g_1) and (M_2,g_2) along a common (isometrically embedded) submanifold (K,g_K) of codimension greater or equal than 3.
We develop a gluing procedure designed to obtain canonical metrics on connected sums of Einstein four-manifolds. The main application is an existence result, using two well-known Einstein manifolds as building blocks: the Fubini-Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and the product metric on $S^2 \times S^2$. Using these metrics in various gluing configurations, critical metrics are found on connected sums for a specific Riemannian functional, which depends on the global geometry of the factors. Furthermore, using certain quotients of $S^2 \times S^2$ as one of the gluing factors, critical metrics o…
In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
In this paper, we show that there exists no equifocal submanifold with non-flat section in four irreducible simply connected symmetric spaces of compact type and rank two. Also, we show a fact for the sections of equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in other irreducible simply connected symmetric spaces of compact type and rank two.
Let $X$ be a closed $3$-manifold, $\mathcal{M}_{R>0}$ the space of metrics on $X$ with positive scalar curvature, and $\text{Diff}(X)$ the group of diffeomorphisms of $X$. Marques proves the fundamental result that $\mathcal{M}_{R>0}/ \text{Diff}(X)$ is path connected. Using this and the theorem of Cerf in differential topology, Marques shows that the space of asymptotically flat metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature on $\mathbb{R}^3$ is path connected. Based on Carlotto-Li's generalization of Marques' result to the case of compact manifold with boundary, we show that the space of asymptot…
We prove that if G is a compact connected Lie group and X is a compact connected hyper-Kahler manifold, then the L^2 metric on (the smooth locus of) the moduli space of flat G-bundles on X is a hyper-Kahler metric.
We give a complete classification of left invariant para-Kähler structures on four-dimensional simply connected Lie groups up to an automorphism. As an application we discuss some curvatures properties of the canonical connection associated to these structures as flat, Ricci flat and existence of Ricci solitons.
In this article we prove that the spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms over a noncompact flat manifold is always a connected closed interval of the nonnegative real line. The proof is based on a detailed decomposition of the structure of flat manifolds.
We propose a global invariant $σ_c$ for contact manifolds which admit a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure, analogous to the Yamabe invariant $σ$. We prove that this invariant is non-decreasing under handle attaching and under connected sum. We then give a lower bound on $σ_c$ in a particular case.
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are $3$-dimensional closed (compact without boundary) CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.
In these notes we survey basic concepts of affine geometry and their interaction with Riemannian geometry. We give a characterization of affine manifolds which has as counterpart those pseudo-Riemannian manifolds whose Levi-Civita connection is flat. We show that no connected semisimple Lie group admits a left invariant flat affine connection. We characterize flat pseudo-Riemannian Lie groups. For a flat left-invariant pseudo-metric on a Lie group, we show the equivalence between the completeness of the Levi-Civita connection and unimodularity of the group. We emphasize the case of flat left i…
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are two closed (compact with no boundary) spherical CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a spherical CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.
We consider open, oriented 3-manifolds which are infinite connected sums of closed 3-manifolds. We introduce some topological invariants for these manifolds and obtain a classification in the case where there are only finitely many summands up to diffeomorphism. This result encompasses both the Kneser-Milnor Prime Decomposition Theorem for closed 3-manifolds and the Ker{é}kj{á}rt{ó}-Richards classification theorem for open surfaces.
The purpose of this article is to investigate Bach-flat critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M.$ Here, we prove that a Bach-flat critical metric of the volume functional on a simply connected 4-dimensional manifold with boundary isometric to a standard sphere must be isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\Bbb{R}^{4},$ $\Bbb{H}^{4}$ or $\Bbb{S}^{4}$. Moreover, we show that in dimension three the result even is true replacing the Bach-flat condition by the weaker assumption that $M$ has divergence-free Bach tensor.
We analyze the obstruction to metrics of positive scalar curvature within a given bounded distortion class of metrics. This obstruction lives in a non-Hausdorff cohomology group Poincare dual to the uniformly finite homology studied by Block and Weinberger. One of the applications is a converse to their theorem on infinite connected sums, giving a complete picture of when such manifolds have metrics of positive scalar curvature.
We present a construction of closed 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2, which generalises Kovalev's twisted connected sums by taking quotients of the pieces in the construction before gluing. This makes it possible to realise a wider range of topological types, and Crowley, Goette and the author arXiv:1505.02734 use this to exhibit examples of closed 7-manifolds with disconnected moduli space of holonomy G_2 metrics.
For a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g_2)$ with constant $Q$-curvature of dimension $n\geq 6$ satisfying nondegeneracy condition, we show that one can construct many examples of constant $Q$-curvature manifolds by gluing construction. We provide a general procedure of gluing together $(M,g_2)$ with any compact manifold $(N, g_1)$ satisfying a geometric assumption. In particular, we can prove that there exists a metric with constant $Q$-curvature on the connected sum $N #M$.
In this paper we prove that the holonomy group of a simply connected locally projectively flat Finsler manifold of constant curvature is a finite dimensional Lie group if and only if it is flat or it is Riemannian.
We study the asymptotics of the number N(t) of geometrically distinct closed geodesics of a Riemannian or Finsler metric on a connected sum of two compact manifolds of dimension at least three with non-trivial fundamental groups and apply this result to the prime decomposition of a three-manifold. In particular we show that the function N(t) grows at least like the prime numbers on a compact 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group. It follows that a generic Riemannian metric on a compact 3-manifold has infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics. We also consider the case of a c…
Under a vanishing hypothesis, Donaldson and Friedman proved that the connected sum of two self-dual Riemannian 4-Manifolds is again self-dual. Here we prove that the same result can be extended over to the positive scalar curvature case.
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
We construct infinite families of non-simply connected locally conformally flat (LCF) 4-manifolds realizing rich topological types. These manifolds have strictly negative scalar curvature and the underlying topological 4-manifolds do not admit any Einstein metrics. Such 4-manifolds are of particular interest as examples of Bach-flat but non-Einstein spaces in the non-simply connected case. Besides that the underlying smooth manifolds are examples of spaces that admit open book decomposition in dimension 4.
Let $N$ be a closed enlargeable manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and $M$ a closed spin manifold of equal dimension, a famous theorem of Gromov-Lawson states that the connected sum $M\# N$ admits no metric of positive scalar curvature. We present a potential generalization of this result to the case where $M$ is nonspin. We use index theory for Dirac operators to prove our result.
In this paper we define strongly projectively flatness of holomorphic maps into the complex Grassmannian manifold, which is a kind of generalization of holomorphic maps into the complex projective space and prove a rigidity of equivariant strongly projectively flat maps of compact simply connected homogeneous Kähler manifolds.
Let $M$ be a simply-connected closed manifold of dimension $\geq 5$ which does not admit a metric with positive scalar curvature. We give necessary conditions for $M$ to admit a scalar-flat metric. These conditions involve the first Pontrjagin class and the cohomology ring of $M$. As a consequence any simply-connected scalar-flat manifold of dimension $\geq 5$ with vanishing first Pontrjagin class admits a metric with positive scalar curvature. We also describe some relations between scalar-flat metrics, almost complex structures and the free loop space.
We introduce a method to construct $G_2$-instantons over compact $G_2$-manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of building blocks [Kov03,KL11,CHNP12]. Our construction is based on gluing $G_2$-instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over the building blocks via the first named author's work [SE11]. We require natural compatibility and transversality conditions which can be interpreted in terms of certain Lagrangian subspaces of a moduli space of stable bundles on a K3 surface.
Whyte used the index theory of Dirac operators and Block-Weiberger uniformly finite homology to show that certain infinite connected sums do not carry a metric with nonnegative scalar curvature in their bounded geometry class. His proof uses a coarse version of the $\hat{A}$-class to obstruct such metrics. In this note we prove a version of Whyte's result where a variant of the notion of infinite $K$-area, originally due to Gromov, is used to obstruct metrics with positive scalar curvature.
We prove that for each closed smooth spin 4-manifold M there exists a closed smooth 4-manifold N such that the connected sum M # N admits a conformally flat Riemannian metric.
The aim of this paper is to construct infinitely many families of Einstein metrics on the connected sums of arbitrary number of copies of $S^2\times S^3$. We realize these 5-manifolds as total spaces of Seifert bundles over Del Pezzo orbifolds. A Kähler--Einstein metric on the Del Pezzo orbifold is then lifted to an Einstein metric using the Kobayashi--Boyer--Galicki method.
We show that the moduli space of Ricci flat metrics of unit volume (including orbifold metrics) on a K3 surface is simply connected and that it has the same rational cohomology as the automorphism group of the K3 lattice $(-E_8)^{\oplus 2}\oplus U^{\oplus 3}$.
We give a new, connected-sum-like construction of Riemannian metrics with special holonomy G_2 on compact 7-manifolds. The construction is based on a gluing theorem for appropriate elliptic partial differential equations. As a prerequisite, we also obtain asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with holonomy SU(3) building up on the work of Tian and Yau. Examples of new topological types of compact 7-manifolds with holonomy G_2 are constructed using Fano 3-folds.
It is a well known result of Gromov that all manifolds of a given dimension with positive sectional curvature are subject to a universal bound on the sum of their Betti numbers. On the other hand, there is no such bound for manifolds with positive Ricci curvature: indeed, Perelman constructed positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex projective planes. In this paper, we revisit and extend Perelman's techniques to construct positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex, quaternionic, and octonionic projective spaces in every dimension.
We consider several differential-topological invariants of compact 4-manifolds which directly arise from Riemannian variational problems. Using recent results of Bauer and Furuta, we compute these invariants in many cases that were previously intractable. In particular, we are now able to calculate the Yamabe invariant for certain connected sums of complex surfaces.
We develop the Gompf fiber connected sum operation for symplectic orbifolds. We use it to construct a symplectic 4-orbifold with $b_1=0$ and containing symplectic surfaces of genus 1 and 2 that are disjoint and span the rational homology. This is used in turn to construct a K-contact Smale-Barden manifold with specified 2-homology that satisfies the known topological constraints with sharper estimates than the examples constructed previously. The manifold can be chosen spin or non-spin.
In this note we take some initial steps in the investigation of a fourth order analogue of the Yamabe problem in conformal geometry. The Paneitz constants and the Paneitz invariants considered are believed to be very helpful to understand the topology of the underlined manifolds. We calculate how those quantities change, analogous to how the Yamabe constants and the Yamabe invariants do, under the connected sum operations.
We show that for a noncollapsing sequence of closed, connected, oriented Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature uniformly bounded from below and diameter uniformly bounded above, Gromov-Hausdorff convergence essentially agrees with intrinsic flat convergence.
M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds…
This is a survey article on the existence of locally conformally flat(LCF) and self-dual(SD) metrics on various basic 4-manifolds like simply-connected ones or product types
The theory of flat Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and flat affine manifolds is closely connected to the topic of prehomogeneous affine representations of Lie groups. In this article, we exhibit several aspects of this correspondence. At the heart of our presentation is a development of the theory of characteristic classes and characters of prehomogeneous affine representations. We give applications concerning flat affine, as well as Pseudo-Riemannian and symplectic affine flat manifolds.
We record an answer to the question "In which dimensions is the connected sum of two closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". In the process of doing so, we are naturally led to ask "For which values of l is the connected sum of l closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". We answer this question, along with its non-compact analogue, using obstruction theory and Yang's results on the existence of almost complex structures on (n-1)-connected 2n-manifolds. Finally, we partially extend Datta and Subramanian's result on the nonexisten…
We extend our discrete uniformization theorems for planar, $m$-connected, Jordan domains [Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik 670 (2012), 65--92] to closed surfaces of non-positive genus.
A longstanding question in superstring/$M$ theory is does it predict supersymmetry below the string scale? We formulate and discuss a necessary condition for this to be true; this is the mathematical conjecture that all stable, compact Ricci flat manifolds have special holonomy in dimensions below eleven. Almost equivalent is the proposal that the landscape of all geometric, stable, string/$M$ theory compactifications to Minkowski spacetime (at leading order) are supersymmetric. For simply connected manifolds, we collect together a number of physically relevant mathematical results, emphasisin…
