We consider open, oriented 3-manifolds which are infinite connected sums of closed 3-manifolds. We introduce some topological invariants for these manifolds and obtain a classification in the case where there are only finitely many summands up to diffeomorphism. This result encompasses both the Kneser-Milnor Prime Decomposition Theorem for closed 3-manifolds and the Ker{é}kj{á}rt{ó}-Richards classification theorem for open surfaces.
The goal of the paper is to calculate the limit sectrum of the Hodge-Laplace operator under the perturbation of collapse of one part of a connected sum. This gives some new results concerning the 'conformal spectrum' on differential forms.
We analyze the obstruction to metrics of positive scalar curvature within a given bounded distortion class of metrics. This obstruction lives in a non-Hausdorff cohomology group Poincare dual to the uniformly finite homology studied by Block and Weinberger. One of the applications is a converse to their theorem on infinite connected sums, giving a complete picture of when such manifolds have metrics of positive scalar curvature.
Whyte used the index theory of Dirac operators and Block-Weiberger uniformly finite homology to show that certain infinite connected sums do not carry a metric with nonnegative scalar curvature in their bounded geometry class. His proof uses a coarse version of the $\hat{A}$-class to obstruct such metrics. In this note we prove a version of Whyte's result where a variant of the notion of infinite $K$-area, originally due to Gromov, is used to obstruct metrics with positive scalar curvature.
Let $M$ be a smooth closed $4k$-manifold whose Yamabe invariant $Y(M)$ is nonpositive. We show that $$Y(M\sharp l \Bbb HP^k\sharp m \bar{\Bbb HP^k})=Y(M),$$ where $l,m$ are nonnegative integers, and $\Bbb HP^k$ is the quaternionic projective space. When $k=4$, we also have $$Y(M\sharp l CaP^2\sharp m \bar{CaP^2})=Y(M),$$ where $CaP^2$ is the Cayley plane.
Let $N$ be a closed enlargeable manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and $M$ a closed spin manifold of equal dimension, a famous theorem of Gromov-Lawson states that the connected sum $M\# N$ admits no metric of positive scalar curvature. We present a potential generalization of this result to the case where $M$ is nonspin. We use index theory for Dirac operators to prove our result.
We introduce a method to construct $G_2$-instantons over compact $G_2$-manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of building blocks [Kov03,KL11,CHNP12]. Our construction is based on gluing $G_2$-instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over the building blocks via the first named author's work [SE11]. We require natural compatibility and transversality conditions which can be interpreted in terms of certain Lagrangian subspaces of a moduli space of stable bundles on a K3 surface.
We study the asymptotics of the number N(t) of geometrically distinct closed geodesics of a Riemannian or Finsler metric on a connected sum of two compact manifolds of dimension at least three with non-trivial fundamental groups and apply this result to the prime decomposition of a three-manifold. In particular we show that the function N(t) grows at least like the prime numbers on a compact 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group. It follows that a generic Riemannian metric on a compact 3-manifold has infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics. We also consider the case of a c…
We give a new, connected-sum-like construction of Riemannian metrics with special holonomy G_2 on compact 7-manifolds. The construction is based on a gluing theorem for appropriate elliptic partial differential equations. As a prerequisite, we also obtain asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with holonomy SU(3) building up on the work of Tian and Yau. Examples of new topological types of compact 7-manifolds with holonomy G_2 are constructed using Fano 3-folds.
Negative Sasakian manifolds, where the first Chern class of the contact subbundle is a torsion class, can be viewed as Seifert-$S^1$ bundles where the base orbifold has an ample orbifold canonical class. We use this framework to settle completely an open problem formulated by C.Boyer and K.Galicki which asks whether or not arbitrary connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ are negative Sasakian manifolds. As a consequence of the affirmative answer to this problem, there exists so-called Sasaki eta-Einstein and Lorentzian Sasaki-Einstein metrics on all of these five-manifolds and moreover all of these…
We review a method to construct $\rm{G}_2$--instantons over compact $\rm{G}_2$--manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of Calabi-Yau $3$-folds with cylindrical end, based on the series of articles [SE15, SEW15, JMPSE17, MNSE17] by the author and others. The construction is based on gluing $\rm{G}_2$--instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over such building blocks, subject to natural compatibility and transversality conditions. Explicit examples are obtained from matching pairs of semi-Fano $3$-folds by an algorithmic procedure based on the Hartshorne-Serre cor…
In this paper we construct Ricci-positive metrics on the connected sum of products of arbitrarily many spheres provided the dimensions of all but one sphere in each summand are at least 3. There are two new technical theorems required to extend previous results on sums of products of two spheres. The first theorem is a gluing construction for Ricci-positive manifolds with corners generalizing a gluing construction of Perelman for Ricci-positive manifolds with boundaries. Our construction gives a sufficient condition for gluing together two Ricci-positive manifolds with corners along isometric …
Using earlier work of Sá Earp and the author [SEW13] we construct an irreducible unobstructed $G_2$-instanton on an $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-bundle over a twisted connected sum recently discovered by Crowley-Nordström [CN14].
The aim of this paper is to construct infinitely many families of Einstein metrics on the connected sums of arbitrary number of copies of $S^2\times S^3$. We realize these 5-manifolds as total spaces of Seifert bundles over Del Pezzo orbifolds. A Kähler--Einstein metric on the Del Pezzo orbifold is then lifted to an Einstein metric using the Kobayashi--Boyer--Galicki method.
We develop a gluing procedure designed to obtain canonical metrics on connected sums of Einstein four-manifolds. The main application is an existence result, using two well-known Einstein manifolds as building blocks: the Fubini-Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and the product metric on $S^2 \times S^2$. Using these metrics in various gluing configurations, critical metrics are found on connected sums for a specific Riemannian functional, which depends on the global geometry of the factors. Furthermore, using certain quotients of $S^2 \times S^2$ as one of the gluing factors, critical metrics o…
Under a vanishing hypothesis, Donaldson and Friedman proved that the connected sum of two self-dual Riemannian 4-Manifolds is again self-dual. Here we prove that the same result can be extended over to the positive scalar curvature case.
We consider several differential-topological invariants of compact 4-manifolds which directly arise from Riemannian variational problems. Using recent results of Bauer and Furuta, we compute these invariants in many cases that were previously intractable. In particular, we are now able to calculate the Yamabe invariant for certain connected sums of complex surfaces.
It is a well known result of Gromov that all manifolds of a given dimension with positive sectional curvature are subject to a universal bound on the sum of their Betti numbers. On the other hand, there is no such bound for manifolds with positive Ricci curvature: indeed, Perelman constructed positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex projective planes. In this paper, we revisit and extend Perelman's techniques to construct positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex, quaternionic, and octonionic projective spaces in every dimension.
In this note we take some initial steps in the investigation of a fourth order analogue of the Yamabe problem in conformal geometry. The Paneitz constants and the Paneitz invariants considered are believed to be very helpful to understand the topology of the underlined manifolds. We calculate how those quantities change, analogous to how the Yamabe constants and the Yamabe invariants do, under the connected sum operations.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold with dimension n > 2. The Yamabe problem is to find a metric with constant scalar curvature in the conformal class of g, by minimizing the total scalar curvature. The proof was completed in 1984. Suppose (M',g') and (M'',g'') are compact Riemannian n-manifolds with constant scalar curvature. We form the connected sum M' # M'' of M' and M'' by removing small balls from M' and M'' and joining the S^{n-1} boundaries together. In this paper we use analysis to construct metrics with constant scalar curvature on M' # M''. Our description is quite explicit, …
We shall prove a new non-vanishing theorem for the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariant of connected sums of 4-manifolds with positive first Betti number. The non-vanishing theorem enables us to find many new examples of 4-manifolds with non-trivial stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants and it also gives a partial, but strong affirmative answer to a conjecture concerning non-vanishing of the invariant. Various new applications of the non-vanishing theorem are also given. For example, we shall introduce variants $\barλ_k$ of Perelman's $\barλ$ invariants for real numbers $k$ and com…
Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be special Lagrangian submanifolds of a compact Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ that intersect transversely at a single point. We can then think of $M_1\cup M_2$ as a singular special Lagrangian submanifold of $X$ with a single isolated singularity. We investigate when we can regularize $M_1\cup M_2$ in the following sense: There exists a family of Calabi-Yau structures $X_α$ on $X$ and a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds $M_α$ of $X_α$ such that $M_α$ converges to $M_1\cup M_2$ and $X_α$ converges to the original Calabi-Yau structure on $X$. We prove that a regularization …
We establish a general `gluing theorem', which states roughly that if two nondegenerate constant mean curvature surfaces are juxtaposed, so that their tangent planes are parallel and very close to one another, but oppositely oriented, then there is a new constant mean curvature surface quite near to this configuration (in the Hausdorff topology), but which is a topological connected sum of the two surfaces. Here nondegeneracy refers to the invertibility of the linearized mean curvature operator. This paper treats the simplest context for our result namely when the surfaces are compact with non…
We solve a conjecture of Morgan and Szabo (Embedded genus 2 surfaces in four-manifolds, Preprint) about the relationship of the basic classes of two four-manifolds $X_i$ of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, such that there are embedded Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 2$ and self-intersection zero (and representing odd homology classes) with the basic classes of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces (supposing this latter one is of simple type). This is also expressed as constraints in the basic classes of X. The result is in accordance with the results on Seiber…
Recently, at least 50 million of novel examples of compact $G_2$ holonomy manifolds have been constructed as twisted connected sums of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau threefolds. The purpose of this paper is to study mirror symmetry for compactifications of Type II superstrings in this context. We focus on $G_2$ manifolds obtained from building blocks constructed from dual pairs of tops, which are the closest to toric CY hypersurfaces, and formulate the analogue of the Batyrev mirror map for this class of $G_2$ holonomy manifolds, thus obtaining several millions of novel dual superstring…
M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds…
We propose a method to construct G_2-instantons over a compact twisted connected sum G_2-manifold, applying a gluing result of Sá Earp and Walpuski to instantons over a pair of 7-manifolds with a tubular end (see arXiv:1310.7933). In our example, the moduli spaces of the ingredient instantons are non-trivial, and their images in the moduli space over the asymptotic cross-section K3 surface intersect transversely. Such a pair of asymptotically stable holomorphic bundles is obtained using a twisted version of the Hartshorne-Serre construction, which can be adapted to produce other examples. More…
We relate the Donaldson invariants of two four-manifolds $X_i$ with embedded Riemann surfaces of genus 2 and self-intersection zero with the invariants of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces. When the original manifolds are of simple type with $b_1=0$ and $b^+>1$, X is of simple type with $b_1=0$ and $b^+>1$ as well, and the relationship between the invariants is expressed as constraints in the basic classes for X. Also we give some applications. For instance, if $X_i$ have both $b_1=0$ then X is of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, and has no basic classes eval…
We record an answer to the question "In which dimensions is the connected sum of two closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". In the process of doing so, we are naturally led to ask "For which values of l is the connected sum of l closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". We answer this question, along with its non-compact analogue, using obstruction theory and Yang's results on the existence of almost complex structures on (n-1)-connected 2n-manifolds. Finally, we partially extend Datta and Subramanian's result on the nonexisten…
In this paper, firstly, for some $4n$-dimensional almost complex manifolds $M_{i}, ~1\le i \le α$, we prove that $\left(\sharp_{i=1}^α M_{i}\right) \sharp (α{-}1) \mathbb{C} P^{2n}$ must admits an almost complex structure, where $α$ is a positive integer. Secondly, for a $2n$-dimensional almost complex manifold $M$, we get that $M\sharp \overline{\mathbb{C} P^{n}}$ also admits an almost complex structure. At last, as an application, we obtain that $α\mathbb{C} P^{2n}\sharp β\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2n}}$ admits an almost complex structure if and only if $α$ is odd.
In this paper we announce a gluing theorem for conformal structures with anti-self-dual (ASD) Weyl tensor that applies in geometrical situations that are more general than those considered by previous authors. By adapting a method proposed by Floer, sufficient conditions are given for the existence of ASD conformal structures on `generalized connected sums' of non-compact ASD 4-manifolds with cylindrical ends. The gluing theorem applies in particular to give results about connected sums of ASD orbifolds along (isolated) singular points.
For a closed Riemannian orbifold $O$, we compare the spectra of the Laplacian, acting on functions or differential forms, to the Neumann spectra of the orbifold with boundary given by a domain $U$ in $O$ whose boundary is a smooth manifold. Generalizing results of several authors, we prove that the metric of $O$ can be perturbed to ensure that the first $N$ eigenvalues of $U$ and $O$ are arbitrarily close to one another. This involves a generalization of the Hodge decomposition to the case of orbifolds with manifold boundary. Using these results, we study the behavior of the Laplace spectrum o…
