We define an integer valued invariant of homology spheres using the methods of SU(3) gauge theory and study its behavior under orientation reversal and connected sum.
A perturbative SU(3) Casson invariant $Λ_{SU(3)}(X)$ for integral homology 3-spheres is defined. Besides being fully perturbative, it has nice properties: (1) $4 . Λ_{SU(3)}(X)$ is an integer. (2) It is preseved under orientation change. (3) A connected sum formula holds. Explicit calculations of the invariant for $1/k$ surgery on $(2,q)$ torus knots are made and compared with a different generalization of Casson's invariant to SU(3) by Boden and Herald. For those cases computed, the invariant defined here is a quadratic polynomial in k for k>0 and a quadratic polynomial for k<0.
We derive a gauge theoretic invariant of integral homology 3-spheres which counts gauge orbits of irreducible, perturbed flat SU(3) connections with sign given by spectral flow. To compensate for the dependence of this sum on perturbations, the invariant includes contributions from the reducible, perturbed flat orbits. Our formula for the correction term generalizes that given by Walker in his extension of Casson's SU(2) invariant to rational homology 3-spheres.
Recently Andrei Teleman considered instanton moduli spaces over negative definite four-manifolds $X$ with $b_2(X) \geq 1$. If $b_2(X)$ is divisible by four and $b_1(X) =1$ a gauge-theoretic invariant can be defined; it is a count of flat connections modulo the gauge group. Our first result shows that if such a moduli space is non-empty and the manifold admits a connected sum decomposition $X \cong X_1 # X_2$ then both $b_2(X_1)$ and $b_2(X_2)$ are divisible by four; this rules out a previously natural appearing source of 4-manifolds with non-empty moduli space. We give in some detail a constru…
It is a well known result of Gromov that all manifolds of a given dimension with positive sectional curvature are subject to a universal bound on the sum of their Betti numbers. On the other hand, there is no such bound for manifolds with positive Ricci curvature: indeed, Perelman constructed positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex projective planes. In this paper, we revisit and extend Perelman's techniques to construct positive Ricci metrics on arbitrary connected sums of complex, quaternionic, and octonionic projective spaces in every dimension.
We consider several differential-topological invariants of compact 4-manifolds which directly arise from Riemannian variational problems. Using recent results of Bauer and Furuta, we compute these invariants in many cases that were previously intractable. In particular, we are now able to calculate the Yamabe invariant for certain connected sums of complex surfaces.

We present the alternative topological twisting of N=4 Yang-Mills, in which the path integral is dominated not by instantons, but by flat connections of the COMPLEXIFIED gauge group. The theory is nontrivial on compact orientable four-manifolds with nonpositive Euler number, which are necessarily not simply connected. On such manifolds, one finds a single topological invariant, analogous to the Casson invariant of three-manifolds.

We shall prove a new non-vanishing theorem for the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariant of connected sums of 4-manifolds with positive first Betti number. The non-vanishing theorem enables us to find many new examples of 4-manifolds with non-trivial stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants and it also gives a partial, but strong affirmative answer to a conjecture concerning non-vanishing of the invariant. Various new applications of the non-vanishing theorem are also given. For example, we shall introduce variants $\barλ_k$ of Perelman's $\barλ$ invariants for real numbers $k$ and com…
In this note we take some initial steps in the investigation of a fourth order analogue of the Yamabe problem in conformal geometry. The Paneitz constants and the Paneitz invariants considered are believed to be very helpful to understand the topology of the underlined manifolds. We calculate how those quantities change, analogous to how the Yamabe constants and the Yamabe invariants do, under the connected sum operations.
We propose a global invariant $σ_c$ for contact manifolds which admit a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure, analogous to the Yamabe invariant $σ$. We prove that this invariant is non-decreasing under handle attaching and under connected sum. We then give a lower bound on $σ_c$ in a particular case.
We record an answer to the question "In which dimensions is the connected sum of two closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". In the process of doing so, we are naturally led to ask "For which values of l is the connected sum of l closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". We answer this question, along with its non-compact analogue, using obstruction theory and Yang's results on the existence of almost complex structures on (n-1)-connected 2n-manifolds. Finally, we partially extend Datta and Subramanian's result on the nonexisten…
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are $3$-dimensional closed (compact without boundary) CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.

Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are two closed (compact with no boundary) spherical CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a spherical CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.
We consider open, oriented 3-manifolds which are infinite connected sums of closed 3-manifolds. We introduce some topological invariants for these manifolds and obtain a classification in the case where there are only finitely many summands up to diffeomorphism. This result encompasses both the Kneser-Milnor Prime Decomposition Theorem for closed 3-manifolds and the Ker{é}kj{á}rt{ó}-Richards classification theorem for open surfaces.

We investigate the boundness of the Riesz transform on $L^p$ for connected sum of manifolds where the Riesz transform is bounded on $L^p$.
We analyze the obstruction to metrics of positive scalar curvature within a given bounded distortion class of metrics. This obstruction lives in a non-Hausdorff cohomology group Poincare dual to the uniformly finite homology studied by Block and Weinberger. One of the applications is a converse to their theorem on infinite connected sums, giving a complete picture of when such manifolds have metrics of positive scalar curvature.
We present a construction of closed 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2, which generalises Kovalev's twisted connected sums by taking quotients of the pieces in the construction before gluing. This makes it possible to realise a wider range of topological types, and Crowley, Goette and the author arXiv:1505.02734 use this to exhibit examples of closed 7-manifolds with disconnected moduli space of holonomy G_2 metrics.
For a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g_2)$ with constant $Q$-curvature of dimension $n\geq 6$ satisfying nondegeneracy condition, we show that one can construct many examples of constant $Q$-curvature manifolds by gluing construction. We provide a general procedure of gluing together $(M,g_2)$ with any compact manifold $(N, g_1)$ satisfying a geometric assumption. In particular, we can prove that there exists a metric with constant $Q$-curvature on the connected sum $N #M$.
We study the asymptotics of the number N(t) of geometrically distinct closed geodesics of a Riemannian or Finsler metric on a connected sum of two compact manifolds of dimension at least three with non-trivial fundamental groups and apply this result to the prime decomposition of a three-manifold. In particular we show that the function N(t) grows at least like the prime numbers on a compact 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group. It follows that a generic Riemannian metric on a compact 3-manifold has infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics. We also consider the case of a c…
Let $N$ be a closed enlargeable manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and $M$ a closed spin manifold of equal dimension, a famous theorem of Gromov-Lawson states that the connected sum $M\# N$ admits no metric of positive scalar curvature. We present a potential generalization of this result to the case where $M$ is nonspin. We use index theory for Dirac operators to prove our result.

We introduce a method to construct $G_2$-instantons over compact $G_2$-manifolds arising as the twisted connected sum of a matching pair of building blocks [Kov03,KL11,CHNP12]. Our construction is based on gluing $G_2$-instantons obtained from holomorphic bundles over the building blocks via the first named author's work [SE11]. We require natural compatibility and transversality conditions which can be interpreted in terms of certain Lagrangian subspaces of a moduli space of stable bundles on a K3 surface.
Under a vanishing hypothesis, Donaldson and Friedman proved that the connected sum of two self-dual Riemannian 4-Manifolds is again self-dual. Here we prove that the same result can be extended over to the positive scalar curvature case.
We give a new, connected-sum-like construction of Riemannian metrics with special holonomy G_2 on compact 7-manifolds. The construction is based on a gluing theorem for appropriate elliptic partial differential equations. As a prerequisite, we also obtain asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with holonomy SU(3) building up on the work of Tian and Yau. Examples of new topological types of compact 7-manifolds with holonomy G_2 are constructed using Fano 3-folds.
We consider the problem of constructing solutions to the Yamabe equation (i.e. conformal constant scalar curvature metrics) on the generalized connected sum M = (M_1) #_K (M_2) of two compact Riemannian manifolds (M_1,g_1) and (M_2,g_2) along a common (isometrically embedded) submanifold (K,g_K) of codimension greater or equal than 3.
Let $M$ be a smooth closed $4k$-manifold whose Yamabe invariant $Y(M)$ is nonpositive. We show that $$Y(M\sharp l \Bbb HP^k\sharp m \bar{\Bbb HP^k})=Y(M),$$ where $l,m$ are nonnegative integers, and $\Bbb HP^k$ is the quaternionic projective space. When $k=4$, we also have $$Y(M\sharp l CaP^2\sharp m \bar{CaP^2})=Y(M),$$ where $CaP^2$ is the Cayley plane.
We develop a gluing procedure designed to obtain canonical metrics on connected sums of Einstein four-manifolds. The main application is an existence result, using two well-known Einstein manifolds as building blocks: the Fubini-Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and the product metric on $S^2 \times S^2$. Using these metrics in various gluing configurations, critical metrics are found on connected sums for a specific Riemannian functional, which depends on the global geometry of the factors. Furthermore, using certain quotients of $S^2 \times S^2$ as one of the gluing factors, critical metrics o…
Let $(X_1, \bar g_1)$ and $(X_2, \bar g_2)$ be two compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ respectively. The Escobar problem consists in prescribing a conformal metric on a compact manifold with boundary with zero scalar curvature in the interior and constant mean curvature of the boundary. The present work is the construction of a connected sum $X=X_1 \sharp X_2$ by excising half ball near points on the boundary. The resulting metric on $X$ has zero scalar curvature and a CMC boundary. We fully exploit the nonlocal aspect of the problem and use new tools develop…
In this paper we construct Ricci-positive metrics on the connected sum of products of arbitrarily many spheres provided the dimensions of all but one sphere in each summand are at least 3. There are two new technical theorems required to extend previous results on sums of products of two spheres. The first theorem is a gluing construction for Ricci-positive manifolds with corners generalizing a gluing construction of Perelman for Ricci-positive manifolds with boundaries. Our construction gives a sufficient condition for gluing together two Ricci-positive manifolds with corners along isometric …
We show that the m-fold connected sum $m\#\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{2n}$ admits an almost complex structure if and only if m is odd.
In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
We develop the Gompf fiber connected sum operation for symplectic orbifolds. We use it to construct a symplectic 4-orbifold with $b_1=0$ and containing symplectic surfaces of genus 1 and 2 that are disjoint and span the rational homology. This is used in turn to construct a K-contact Smale-Barden manifold with specified 2-homology that satisfies the known topological constraints with sharper estimates than the examples constructed previously. The manifold can be chosen spin or non-spin.
In this paper, firstly, for some $4n$-dimensional almost complex manifolds $M_{i}, ~1\le i \le α$, we prove that $\left(\sharp_{i=1}^α M_{i}\right) \sharp (α{-}1) \mathbb{C} P^{2n}$ must admits an almost complex structure, where $α$ is a positive integer. Secondly, for a $2n$-dimensional almost complex manifold $M$, we get that $M\sharp \overline{\mathbb{C} P^{n}}$ also admits an almost complex structure. At last, as an application, we obtain that $α\mathbb{C} P^{2n}\sharp β\overline{\mathbb{C} P^{2n}}$ admits an almost complex structure if and only if $α$ is odd.
M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds…
In this paper we will show that the generalized connected sum construction for constant scalar curvature metrics can be extended to the zero scalar curvature case. In particular we want to construct solutions to the Yamabe equation on the generalized connected sum M = M_1 (\sharp_K) M_2 of two compact Riemannian manifolds (M_1,g_1) and (M_2,g_2) with zero constant scalar curvature along a common (isometrically embedded) submanifold (K,g_K) of codimension \geq 3. We present here two kinds of construction. The first one is the basic model and it works for every couple of scalar flat manifolds, b…
We solve a conjecture of Morgan and Szabo (Embedded genus 2 surfaces in four-manifolds, Preprint) about the relationship of the basic classes of two four-manifolds $X_i$ of simple type with $b_1=0$, $b^+>1$, such that there are embedded Riemann surfaces of genus $g \geq 2$ and self-intersection zero (and representing odd homology classes) with the basic classes of the manifold X which appears as a connected sum along the surfaces (supposing this latter one is of simple type). This is also expressed as constraints in the basic classes of X. The result is in accordance with the results on Seiber…
We propose a method to construct G_2-instantons over a compact twisted connected sum G_2-manifold, applying a gluing result of Sá Earp and Walpuski to instantons over a pair of 7-manifolds with a tubular end (see arXiv:1310.7933). In our example, the moduli spaces of the ingredient instantons are non-trivial, and their images in the moduli space over the asymptotic cross-section K3 surface intersect transversely. Such a pair of asymptotically stable holomorphic bundles is obtained using a twisted version of the Hartshorne-Serre construction, which can be adapted to produce other examples. More…
We give a general procedure for gluing together possibly noncompact manifolds of constant scalar curvature which satisfy an extra nondegeneracy hypothesis. Our aim is to provide a simple paradigm for making `analytic' connected sums. In particular, we can easily construct complete metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on the complement of certain configurations of an even number of points on the sphere, which is a special case of Schoen's \cite{S1} well-known, difficult construction. Applications of this construction produces metrics with prescribed asymptotics. In particular, we produ…
Recently, at least 50 million of novel examples of compact $G_2$ holonomy manifolds have been constructed as twisted connected sums of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau threefolds. The purpose of this paper is to study mirror symmetry for compactifications of Type II superstrings in this context. We focus on $G_2$ manifolds obtained from building blocks constructed from dual pairs of tops, which are the closest to toric CY hypersurfaces, and formulate the analogue of the Batyrev mirror map for this class of $G_2$ holonomy manifolds, thus obtaining several millions of novel dual superstring…
