A Perturbative SU(3) Casson Invariant

A perturbative SU(3) Casson invariant $Λ_{SU(3)}(X)$ for integral homology 3-spheres is defined. Besides being fully perturbative, it has nice properties: (1) $4 . Λ_{SU(3)}(X)$ is an integer. (2) It is preseved under orientation change. (3) A connected sum formula holds. Explicit calculations of the invariant for $1/k$ surgery on $(2,q)$ torus knots are made and compared with a different generalization of Casson's invariant to SU(3) by Boden and Herald. For those cases computed, the invariant defined here is a quadratic polynomial in k for k>0 and a quadratic polynomial for k<0.

A vanishing result for a Casson-type instanton invariant

Casson-type invariants emerging from Donaldson theory over certain negative definite 4-manifolds were recently suggested by Andrei Teleman. These are defined by a count of a zero-dimensional moduli space of flat instantons. Motivated by the cobordism program of proving Witten's conjecture, we use a moduli space of PU(2) Seiberg-Witten monopoles to exhibit an oriented one-dimensional cobordism of the instanton moduli space to the empty space. The Casson-type invariant must therefore vanish.

The Integer Valued SU(3) Casson Invariant for Brieskorn spheres

We develop techniques for computing the integer valued SU(3) Casson invariant. Our method involves resolving the singularities in the flat moduli space using a twisting perturbation and analyzing its effect on the topology of the perturbed flat moduli space. These techniques, together with Bott-Morse theory and the splitting principle for spectral flow, are applied to calculate the invariant for all Brieskorn homology spheres.

The SU(3) Casson Invariant for Integral Homology 3-Spheres

We derive a gauge theoretic invariant of integral homology 3-spheres which counts gauge orbits of irreducible, perturbed flat SU(3) connections with sign given by spectral flow. To compensate for the dependence of this sum on perturbations, the invariant includes contributions from the reducible, perturbed flat orbits. Our formula for the correction term generalizes that given by Walker in his extension of Casson's SU(2) invariant to rational homology 3-spheres.

Topological field theories and formulae of Casson and Meng-Taubes

The goal of this paper is to give a new proof of a theorem of Meng and Taubes that identifies the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds with Milnor torsion. The point of view here will be that of topological quantum field theory. In particular, we relate the Seiberg-Witten equations on a 3-manifold with the Abelian vortex equations on a Riemann surface. These techniques also give a new proof of the surgery formula for the Casson invariant, interpreted as an invariant of a homology S^2 x S^1.

Casson invariants via virtual counting

This is a research announcement on an alternative definition of the Casson invariants by means of virtual counting of the moduli space of irreducible representations of the fundamental group into $\SU(2)$. Along the way, by using derived differential geometry, we propose a general framework to obtain invariants from Chern-Simons type gauge theories.

On the Generalized Casson Invariant

The path integral generalization of the Casson invariant as developed by Rozansky and Witten is investigated. The path integral for various three manifolds is explicitly evaluated. A new class of topological observables is introduced that may allow for more effective invariants. Finally it is shown how the dimensional reduction of these theories corresponds to a generalization of the topological B sigma model.

A three dimensional supergravity theory which generalizes the super IG theory of Witten and resembles the model discussed recently by Mann and Papadopoulos is displayed. The partition function is computed, and is shown to be a three-manifold invariant generalizing the Casson invariant.

Rohlin's invariant and gauge theory II. Mapping tori

This is the second in a series of papers studying the relationship between Rohlin's theorem and gauge theory. We discuss an invariant of a homology S^1 cross S^3 defined by Furuta and Ohta as an analogue of Casson's invariant for homology 3-spheres. Our main result is a calculation of the Furuta-Ohta invariant for the mapping torus of a finite-order diffeomorphism of a homology sphere. Seiberg-Witten-Floer Theory for Homology 3-Spheres

We give the definition of the Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology group for a homology 3-sphere. Its Euler characteristic number is a Casson-type invariant. For a four-manifold with boundary a homology sphere, a relative Seiberg-Witten invariant is defined taking values in the Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology group, these relative Seiberg-Witten invariants are applied to certain homology spheres bounding Stein surfaces.
